I definitely like your idea of expanding the chicken run to include the L-shaped area. In addition, I would keep that area controlled. I would only allow them an hour or so a day of grazing on that grassy area. Also seed it with a variety of additional beneficial greens. Limiting the grazing time, prevents it from getting reduced to total dirt and allows time for bugs to re-populate it.
Also, leave access to get your mower in there to keep it mowed. Chickens prefer shorter grass over tall grass..
