      The turbo Yaris GR 3cyl actually makes 200kw so would actually pull that van up the hill faster lol, as long as you are happy to sit of 6000rpm though

      Looks like the lady’s landcruiser for the win…. The old dinosaur still sounds better most well tuned v8’s would eat that climb with cruise control activated towing heavier vans.

      Very well said, I still think the extra weight, tyres and even age of the 79 play a bigger part in this test. The new 76 is impresive but not an even comparison I think. Time will tell.

      The only real way of getting a true comparison is with both running the same size tyres and both loaded with accessories and gear. It you buy for example a new 2.8 troop carrier it is stock much heavier than the 76. As a touring or off Road vehicle they should both run 35 inch tyres. It would be interesting also to see how a tuned 2.8 is and can you tune it without effecting the longevity of the engine. I think IMO this test is comparing apples to oranges. Time will tell.

    I have tuned 2020 troopy, l get 10.2L/100km empty on highway driving, have pulled my 19ft duel axle Winnebago caravan (sitting on 90kph ish) 15.5L/100km. And run 225/95r16 Dunlops. Great test guys, very informative!! Well done, thank you👍

    Just with the fuel consumptions, when I got my 79 series brand new on 31's, I got 1250km to a 130L tank, on 35's I now get 700-750 km's to the tank, would be interesting to see the towing and driving fuel comparisons on 31's, awesome work though Ronnie keep it up!

      Yeah, an even better test would be to see what these 35’s do to a vehicle. Did it once. Won’t again. It’s a heavy price to pay for looking good.

      Well for starters each rotation of the wheel will propel you 15% further with the 35's, so your 750km on the odo is actually closer to 900 real world kilometers. Then take into account the extra mass, rolling resistance and width and there it's no wonder your economy dropped so much.
      The best setup is stock split rims and skinny tyres. They out perform large fat tyres in all departments other than stopping and arctic driving. Bonus is that you don't need as many spares. Instead of taking 2 spares, just take 1 rim, 2 carcases and some tubes.

      @@chats5957 the stock pizza cutter rim and 7.50 tyre combo is actually heavier and sucks more fuel...we usually replace them with lightweight steel/alloy rims and 32" tyres and keep as spares.

      Agree with the skinnier tyres. I’m trying to source some at the moment and it’s pretty limited. Problem with splits is you can only air down so much before you spin on the rim and then you are done. Shredded tubes, the lot. I was on splits until I got back to beach driving

      The 76 is also un-tuned. It'll be like driving a completely new car once tuned. So yeah, tune and 35s would be interesting.

    There is a large part of me that even if the new one did a wheelie
    I would still prefer the sound and shifting a manual gearbox of the V8
    For me part of the experience is fun factor.
    That's why we still drive our old 45 daily all summer I guess.....

    Great video Ronny, noticed that the EGT value for the 2.8L you had on the Scangauge showed 600 degrees on B1S3 which would be the EGT sensor after the DPF suggesting it may have been doing a DPF burn.

    As other people have mentioned, I’d truly like to see you do the test again with the same size wheels. I’ve never been a fan of the VDJ but I don’t think it was a fair test. Still enjoyed it though 👍👍👍

    I had a 07 3 litre common rail patrol (the grenade) in 2010 & 11 towed a 20 ft van around Aus , the patrol also had a full ARB roof rack with useful junk up top.
    It was a bit gutless if you didn’t get the revs/ gear change right on steep inclines but it matched the latest 2.8 70series for fuel economy both loaded & towing..

    It would have been good to put the two rigs on a weighbridge to see the total GCM. The bigger wheels and accessories do make a big difference. On a recent FB post on the Paj Sport page, people were saying their raised PJs with bigger wheels, a bull bar and roof rack where getting 13l to 17l per 100km. I average 8l per 100km on stock.

    Great test, wouldve been good to add Harry's Prado in the test. Im upgrading from 2.8 Prado to a new 2.8 Troopy in a few days. An interesting scenario if you bought a new Troopy instead of the 76 and then had to decide which Troopy to keep. Cheers

    I enjoyed my v8 76 for the 8 years I had it. I'm also glad I sold it last year for the same price I bought it. These new 2.8's are on my list to try along with the upcoming new Prado 250. If the Prdo comes out with the petrol hybrid, I won't buy the diesel.

    This is why the Prado rocks! It’s more comfortable than either of these, drives better, has a heap more features, costs less, and makes a great shopping cart.

      Absolutely agree. I have a 2023 Prado 150 series, 2.8 diesel, absolutely brilliant vehicle, heaps of power, nicely refined, with plenty of tech, but not over the top and great for any situation.

      @@Johnno1979 I would have to disagree, they have more than enough power. The older ones I am not sure about, but the latest 2023 diesel model that I have is more than powerful enough. In a straight line it will actually out accelerate by BMW 116i by a large margin. The above towing test obviously proves this point nicely. Here in Japan it is also very mountainous with very steep hills, in top gear I can just put my foot down and it will accelerate strongly and increase speed. I am not just saying this because I have one, I am stating actual usage facts.

    I have a 2023 2.8l Fortuner and had it tuned for towing and it gained 22% in power and torque and I'm also getting better fuel economy. It would be interesting to see that test done again with a tune in the 2.8

    It is so interesting to read about the 1-to-1 comparison between the V8 and the 4 cylinder! I own since a couple of months (Sep 23) a 150er/Prado with the same 2.8 diesel automatic, one of the last of the old series which have left the factory before the production line has been modified to built the 250er. What is interesting and you guys in Australia don't know is: Here is Switzerland you can purchase a factory (importer) option of 230 HP / 600 Nm which does not affect the 10 years warranty we get here on Toyota's. The kit is sophisticated (not just a dongle which fakes signals to the engine control) and developed by a company in Germany called J-Sports. They are related to Toyota and supported over the years motorsport activities of Toyota. You should consider to get one of the kits shipped and installed! See how you like the 600 Nm!
    I have not towed anything yet with my Prado but it is totally effortless driving in the mountains...

    Reliability aside, I have never been convinced with the V8 especially given that you need to spend a bucket load of $ to bring it up to standard. Awesome test fellas.

      What standard are you referring to? you are taking a vehicle designed and built to survive in harsh conditions and comparing it to most of the softer option dual cab utes. The 70 is perfect for its original design brief, you only "have to spend buckets of money" on them if you want to try and turn it onto something else they weren't built to be.

    Love these videos. I travel africa year round and it’s Toyota everywhere, 70 series, Prados, hilux, land cruisers…. but I never see any towing being done. It just doesn’t figure in our lives at all. We do however load the cars heavily. Especially the hilux and 70 series cars

    This could have been an excellent test.. ...if both the vehicles had the same tires and the same weight considering all the mods. That's why you see a flood of comments saying it's skewed and not a valid test. Also people are going to suspect endlessly that there is something wrong with the V8 and its tune-up... Did you dyna-test the V8? Should have mentioned that, and the exact numbers you had on the dyno.. Would love a rematch when 76 gets EXACTLY the same tires and the same weight.

    I’m a bit blown away with your fuel usage in the 79. I’ve got a 2020 dual cab, 33s bar work and roof rack. Get 13lt per 100 empty around town or highway. Go down to 17lt per 100 loaded with 2ton van and 500kgs in the tray. Remapped with 220hp and 730nm. I tow in 5th at 2000rpm and hold that gear every where. Definitely impressed with the 76 tho. Didn’t expect the 2.8 to do that well towing.

    I've had a 2016 Toyota hilux for a while now and I've stood by the 2.8 being a great motor, everyone hates on it but don't realize just how far Toyota is pushing the 4cyl platform, with the auto being well tuned from factory a mod i would recommend for the ac60f transmission is a Lockup kit, when gearing down and locked up you get fantastic engine breaking out of that drive line.
    most 70 series owner fall into a mind set that a v8 is the only way, yet look in the heavy diesel applications 4 and 6 cylinder engine dominate the market for a reason, power, size, weight and efficiency. I believe Toyota has taken a great step towards keeping diesels relevant in today's EV and petrol markets.
    hope you read this ronny, im a fan of your real world testing, almost want to do some of my own to see how it compares to a modified and heavily weighted Hilux.

    Very interesting and surprising results. Thanks Ronny for prompting me to do some math.
    Since we can't get either of these in the US until they are 20 years old here are some comparisons.
    Tires; experience with my 1966 highly modified Bronco 33" best tank ever 16MPG 14.7 L/100 at 60MPH (100). 35" with equivalent re-gearing it won't break 12 (19.6) at 50MPH on flat ground.
    I agree with comments tires are having a significant impact.
    Aerodynamics with height and rack on the 79? Full size slide in bed camper on my F250 7.3 = 30% drop.
    What is the weight difference between the two?

    What was the GCM of each combination when towing? That and having the same tyre size are the two key criteria if you are comparing these two particular vehicles. (acknowledging the '79 is tuned).

    Aside from gear/final drive combo ( which I don’t know that the 70 series v8 vs 4), is it possible the tuner give you a tune which start to dial back power as the EGT climbs ( to protect engine) ? Otherwise it seems to define simple physics?
    On the other hand the way to gain more performance seem to be keeping things as stock as possible- no 35s and reduce additional weight

      Honestly, everything about stock is better. It is more reliable/less stress, economical, even better offroad unless you need the clearance(due to IFS and the typical way that people modify, the wrong way with no thought to geometry). Even stock road tyres are better because Bigger(fatter) tyres are actually worse.

    Hey guys, great video series, with the 76, (2.8 never late) I would like to see the 76 wagon with bigger tyres and the same amount of weights and accessories as your 79 Ute. Or the 79 with smaller tyres, And see what the difference would be then with the Towing test, The 35s inch tyres do suck a bit of power out of the vehicle . I have a 2013 79 series single cab, Ute with a canopy and we are towing a full size 20 foot off-road caravan very similar to the van that you are towing in the video. I used to run 35s on the truck but I’ve gone down to 33s you do notice the power difference between the 35s the 33s inch tyres

      This & the different gears, 1st comment i've seen that addresses the issues. If a stock v8 had the same auto it would be a world of difference, never mind a tuned v8.

    That was a bit unfair.
    Ronny has torque robing 35s on the 79 and probably weighs 600Kg more empty.
    I know for a fact the 79 4.5L tuned vs 79 2.8L with same tires and mass are very similar for fuel and performance.
    Over a long run of appox 600km. 4.5L was around 11.9 L/100 and the 2.8L was 11.5 L/100 empty with same tires.(Drivers were different. One may have heavier foot. Both left at same time and arrived with in 2 min of each other. Having driven through Melbourne on weekend.)
    Also have a Auto 79 V8 tuned 2015 pre DPF JMAX4495. It is light years ahead of the of a V8 manual. But can not really compare it fairly. As it weighs 3300kg empty. So gets 13.7L/100 on the highway on 33's. Normally its used 15L/100 when weighing 4450kg. But flogs my manual by 3 seconds on a 0-100km time.

    It would be good to see a stock 2024 8 cylinder 76 and a stock 2024 4 cylinder 76 being tested after they have both been run in, in all manner of driving conditions e.g. sand, rocks, towing, load carrying, and comparing them on performance e.g. fuel consumption, NVH, ride, handling, braking, acceleration etc. So people can decide what’s best for them when buying new.

      Considering you won’t be able to buy a new V8 70 series, it makes little difference.
      Toyota quietly cut the order books last year and are only building V8’s for those existing orders.
      They are not reopening V8 order books.
      Any stock of V8’s that dealers get, will be order the dealership had or will be orders they talked buyers out of their 1VD order and into a 1GD, then the dealership kept the allocation themselves for selling as a very exclusive offering, with price to match.
      Toyota isn’t going to invest anything into making the 1VD pass the forthcoming Euro 6d regulations by the end of 2025, so they won’t be taking orders that they won’t be able to fulfil before the end of 2025.
      It’s pointless suggesting the test should be perfectly comparable to inform choice when the choice is an illusion.
      Toyota are dragging thirsty bois along by the leash by not coming out and saying they aren’t taking any more V8 orders, but that’s how it is.

    As a result of towing a variety of objects for many long years I have found 80 KMH to be a totally useless speed to travel. At 80 the air seems to trap between the vehicle and trailer and for anything under powered like a 47 series or a Hilux you sometimes need a downhill section to break through that 80 barrier.
    Really hard quartering wind (sandstorm conditions) on the Nullarbor or the WA coast makes it hard to find any good speed possibly because the wind angle keeps fluctuating.
    That was yet another good test you have performed. The 2.8 litre 76 Series is looking like a viable tow vehicle, without much modification.

    Same story here. We had a manual 3 door J9/90 series Prada with a V6 petrol. It towed good. Without towing, in the high revs (petrol could go up to 6k no problem) it was fun to drive and pushed you into the seat. But with towing, you really felt the weight. It did surprisingly well in low rpm BUT:
    With the 2014 hilux 3.0 automatic we now have, towing is so much better xD.
    I don’t know why it’s factory rating is just 2.8 tons, it tows so much better than our old Prado did (which was rated for the full 3.5 tons).
    0-100 is much less fun on the hilux though, but in return, on the autobahn, you can drive up a steep one and still accelerate from 100-130 no problem…😅
    Also merging into the autobahn with a trailer now is wayyy less stressful…
    On paper, we have less horse power on the 3.0 diesel than on the V6 petrol. But in real life it’s so much better😅

      @mitchell5064 by outdated as far as I'm aware, there are very few technological advances between the two. The main difference in power is boost. Single and twin turbo is not an advantage or disadvantage. The v8 is 8psi making it a dynamic capacity of 6.9L the 2.8 I can't find the boost but it could be up to 30psi, making it 8.4L capacity. There isn't a lot of magic or advances in engine design it's mostly just simple math of an air pump.

    Good to see for the future of our beloved 70’s. Because the V8 is definitely on the out. And I’m an owner. But it’s hardly new news. I’ve had the earlier 3ltr hiluxes against 1HD FTE’s and they were more than competitive. That said, where are the huge numbers of those vehicles sold at now. Not on the road as a rule but traded for the next model. The more juice you squeeze from these things costs in the long run. No replacement for displacement or something like that.

      @@daveknight743 A suggestion: compare the power and torque figures for the 2 engines, rather than the displacement. Too many other factors including turbo boost pressure affect the power curve that displacement almost doesn't matter any more. Also, and this might be hard, see if you can hire/borrow a 3.0 to try before you buy. Alternatively see if you can find comments from someone who has had both. The guy you replied to said he used to have the 3.0 but not the 2.8 so he probably can't compare the two you're asking about. I've had neither so I don't have an opinion on it.

    I run a 79 series of which I've had for over 4 years. After the 3rd year, i had a Safari armax package fitted.
    It made a huge difference when towing my 3 tonne caravan in the hills.
    14 months after Safari was fitted, i had it taken out, as warranty work needed to be done.
    I'm interested in what tune you've had done. Agree manual locking hubs the way to go.

      It’s a modern diesel, so likes to be let to Rev but most people don’t understand and drive the V8 in top gear or too high a gear for the situation.

    I have my doubts about the ‘tow tune’ in the 79. Was it just a flash tune or was it run up on a dyno by someone who knows their stuff? I have a 2015 76 with a ‘tow tune’ by Tommy at Performance Tourers on 33” Maxxis RAZR MT’s & it does 11.0-12.5L/100 around town (right foot dependent 😂) & worst I’ve seen is 16.5L/100 towing my 2.5T trailer + a full car with 5 people, cage roof rack w/ 4x Maxtrax, solar panel, etc. No problem overtaking trucks up hills at 100+kmh. Before the tune it had no hope.. It struggled to maintain 80kmh going up a hill towing. So it really makes me wonder about the quality of the tune in the 79.

    Just tested over 6000km in my 2022 V8 76 with 4 people, full to the roof luggage, 200kg of accessories and a soft roof top tent is between 13.1 and 13.5L/100km. Towing a lightish 1800kg van to Cooktown via the Bloomfield was the only way I could get it to burn 16.5L/100km. Damn your cruiser is thirsty.
    I think its pretty clear the days of the v8 cruiser are done, Toyota are really probably just keeping it 'current' trying to fill the back log of v8's. Moving forward they should just release the 2.8L in a manual version and retire the v8 variant.

    My stock v8 troopy GXL with stock tyres gets 11L / 100km on the highway in my "real world" tests. Not much more than this 2.8. I never towed anything as big as this van so i can't compare there but smaller, tandem trailers got me 14 to 15l per 100km

      Typically it's the weight of the car that determines most of the fuel economy. A much less significant amount is determined by engine capacity. It's usually 2-10%, not 60% as shown by them.

    A lot of focus on the engines with the uphill climb, but in reality the auto vs manual is a significant factor. Auto’s are quicker to down shift, before there is a loss of momentum which is impossible to recover with such a big load going uphill.

      @@samp1533 you wouldn't go below your boost threshold while going up a hill and the light up time on a modern diesel turbo is in the milliseconds. I completely understand what your saying and thats definetly an issue you would have with a drastically larger wastegated turbo but on the 1vdj the factory turbo is a small variable geometry unit thats only pushing 12-15psi. If you have a boost guage hooked up to your car you can see this first hand as long as your in the boost threshold rpm the boost guage should near mirror your throttle

      @@chipchip48 its not the hill causing you to go bellow the boost "threshold", its lifting your foot off the throttle when you change gear in the manual and resultant loss of (at least some) boost.
      That's not a factor with the auto, your foot is flat the whole time. watch the video in the link, even with a sequential trans the ignition is cut for a moment, which is not the case with the auto.
      not really feasible to put an auto in the v8 for the test, but I'd bet even money that if you did, the tyres the accessory weight and anything else would make no difference the v8 would match the stock 4 cyl if not better it.
      I don't care either way what wins, We have a v8 and I'm considering a 4 cyl as a second car. The 4 cyl is performing well and I knew it would.
      There's a reason you can't get a manual 4 cyl (just saying)

I am simply commenting that modern auto boxes are superior for towing in most circumstances, and particularly going up long and steep hils.

    What's interesting is that the prado can be in low range with an open centre diff, so you can still have that control you spoke of when reversing a trailer. Would be a good comparison between the prado and the new 2.8 76 series

    love the side by side testing, but for the towing up a hill and MPG i agree the 79 has bigger tiers which will act like a higher gear and make a sluggish top end at higher speeds and or towing.

    Fit a 8 speed ZF 8HP 75 automatic to the V8 and do it again. My experience it is the automatic transmission that makes the difference.

      Depends what you are doing. Ronny’s V8 is a lot heavier with every accessory and wind drag but still with the std manual box. As the test is about engines, a better test would be to test two stock vehicles with the V8 having an 8 speed automatic.

    hey Ronny, interesting clip as always. Very interesting. The only thing I would say with these smaller engines being pushed to do large towing jobs is ... how long will they last, truly ?
    The only 2 selling points nowadays for manufacturers are 1) towing capacity and 2) how many litres per 100 will it do it in.
    Making engines smaller and smaller yet pushing up power and torque levels more and more with such straining tolerances: Power to weight is great in stock form but once you hook on a 3.5 T van ... ? Plus some bar work, winch, heavier bigger wheels / tyres, roof rack etc. Something has to give and break. I liken it to transplanting a 5 yr old child's heart into a 300 kilo person and then making them run up a hill over and over again while loading up their back pack with bricks. They could only do it so long and each rest in between would get longer and longer if that makes sense.
    I'm just not a fan of tiny engines revving their t*ts off for the same gains in performance. There's no substitute for cubic capacity - hence why top fuelers use supercharged big blocks and not twin turbo 2.0ltr 4 cylinder engines. But that's just my take on it anyway.     In general a good towing test between the two.
    That said I feel there are some things that should be noted here
    #1 for starters I don't care what kind of vehicle you have, Generally Speaking an Automatic Transmission will do way better than a Manual Transmission when it comes to Towing. This simply comes down to the Available Torque Multiplication in the Automatic vs the Manual Transmission.
    #2 thanks to the 79 having a V8 I'm sure it has a bit better Low End Torque compared to the 76's 2.8 Inline 4.
    #3 since the 79 has much bigger tires and added weight it will struggle a bit more compared to a Practically Stock 76. I don't care what vehicle you have. Doing changes like that without doing a Final Drive Change is going to impact Towing Quite a bit.
    Am I surprised that the 76 did that well with towing? Not really. I had a 2019 Ford Ranger with the 2.3 EcoBoost and the 10 speed Automatic and it did real well when it came to Towing.
    If anything when towing you still have to remember that the goal is to get to the Destination in a Safe Manner instead of trying to be the first one there. One wrong move and it could all be over.

      Agreed. A final drive correction won't completely fix it. there is a lot of extra weight and inertia in the wheel. And the further from the hub the weight is the harder is it to turn. They definitely need to be stock weight, on the flat the weight is not significant but when lifting it up the hill it is.

Sometimes I am stunned that regular people think that they are more intelligent than engineers resulting in making stock engines worse. I am not a fan of tuning based on chips. Having said that the auto also plays a big role. Interesting video for sure.

    I towing a camper trailer weight around 1.9 with the fortuner with the full build for twd 4x4 so car already quite heavy itself but she pull it very comfortable with fuel consumption sit around 16 to 17.5 depend on road conditions and wind.

      I actually think this video has killed the V8. I have one on order for May and thinking about swapping it for the 4cyl now. Its a no brainer given its cheaper and you dont have to spend the $10k on engine performance!

Of course this needs to be done with the vehicles weighing roughly the same, similar mods same size tyres etc... this was just the appetiser, the fuel on the fire so to speak. Still the 4 banger is awesome by the looks, but longevity working hard in a Cruiser? Hmm only time will tell.

    I believe a properly tuned 4cylinder diesel, with the proper gearing and higher numbered transmission is a very good package. Other than heavy duty trucks...most smaller to medium sized cars, trucks and SUVs would be ideal candidates for a 4 cylinder diesel! Just for the record I own a V6 OM642 Jeep and have owned several 4 cylinder Mercedes SUVs.

    Hey Ronny, I tow a 3.5T van in a tuned 2020 79 series, and I think you missed something on that test. I learnt that for those big long hills you need to be doing 100km/h in 4th at the bottom of the hill. You can then hold 100 all the way up. Any speed you loose before changing into 4th, you never get back.

    Can you do a comparison between the 79 series with the 2.8 compared to the hilux with a 2.4 in it . I'm looking at doing a build with a model j 4x4 base and with the weight difference and the suspension difference is there a great deal of difference empty . Does that make a major difference and what would be the best options for my build. I come from an old school thought of keeping things as simple as possible. I want a good weekend warrior that still has street manors .

    Great job Ronny! I think the 79 can't perform at his best due to the effect of your lights and your bull bar reducing the air fliw on the engine radiator. The 76 has a stock bumper on it...
