Thank you for this - factory standards drag race. The culture of deleting the Toyota warranty with GVM upgrades, catch-cans and tunes is strong with the V8 fan-boys though!
Ok, the 4 cylinder is faster in a drag, but what about the long game? Is the 4 cylinder still going to be a reliable workhorse with 500,000+ k's on the clock?
@@effigy42yeah it is. Are you blind?? Did you not just watch the video?? I can't believe how many morons can't grasp the fact that a 4 cylinder can be faster than a 16 year old v8.
V8, I4? Doesn't matter. The 7x series LandCruisers have always been laundry list of upgrades from factory to make drivable. Still has the goofy leaf rear. I wonder if they bothered to fix the track width disparity? Let me guess, the handbrake is still trash? I wonder how long the dpf system will last till expensive replacement? Driving position still looks like a farmer straddling a tractor.
The v8s are undertuned from factory. Toyota deliberately did this to under stress the motor. Anyone who truly knows landcruisers is that they where made to last not go fast.
@@TasmanianDevil3 they do mate! My previous boss owned one with 600,000kms on the clock. Never been rebuilt, apart from water pump replacement, injectors few other nic nacs like most cars would over time.

The real test will be how reliable they are. The older rigs dont break even when your abusing the fuck out of them. Which is pretty important if your in the outback towing a off road van through a tough 4wd track or just rescuing ya mates in their hiluxs and tritons. if was going to spend big money on a 4wd for the city then i have to buy a big American truck

Would love to see a review over a couple of days with some weight to simulate an overlander. Load both with 500kg and hook up an offroad camper/trailer then test them on different surfaces over proper distances. I expect the V8 to do better in the sand then or maybe the auto gearbox of the new one will outperform the old bull? I do prefer manual when 4x4-ing but nowadays the autoboxes are pretty good.
That 4 pot has to scream at high constant revs to make those peak torque figures the V8 already makes effortlessly down low. Just the usual story with displacement.
@@TheRandomActivity Scream at constant high revs? 😂 It's a diesel and doesn't rev any harder than the 8 pot! Also it has bigger pistons than the 8, and will reach the 8 pots max torque levels at lower revs than it will reach it's own max torque levels. Therefore doing it quite easy.
Thanks for the replies. I have always dreamt of having a Cruizer and looks like Im finally going to be able trade my pickup or UTE as you say in Auzzy and buy my cruizer. As luck would have it this new upgrade happens now and I want to make sure Im not going to regret the decision I make (2.8 or V8).
Both motors are the same on paper almost but that auto with the extra ratio really makes a difference. I’d still prefer the v8 though for a lower stressed motor. I can’t see that 4cyl doing 500000+km
"there's no replacement for... Boost"😂 true though, boost is displacement at the end of the day. Though what I don't understand is why you have 2 Toyotas where the front end is finished but the back end looks like an x-ray
When are idiots, gonna understand that 4x4 are not drag. Cars are not meant to go on a straight line. It’s like saying which Ferrari is best to take on the sand.
Omg all the west Australians are going to hate it They won’t be able to straight pipe it and get the v8 sounds they love to get with the 4” straight pipe to drive threw perth on there days off Hahaha 🤣
hpw about auto v8 and auto 4cyl. that would be the true test. dual cab for both etc.... you have to test apples with apples. On looks I cancelled my new dual cab order as I just don't like the front end, will look at a now old style dual cab somewhere down the line.
To be fair, these 2 vehicles aren’t race cars. The auto will always beat the manual between these 2. Start putting a big load on the 4cyl and see how it goes compared to the v8. I don’t think the 4cyl will cut it to be honest. My hilux is absolutely gutless when towing and the v8 just pulls. I know what I would pick.
@@joshthomas2536 just saying mate. I have the 2.8 in my hilux which isn’t the best when towing and I have towed with the v8 which was a lot better to tow with and could hold the power up hills better than my hilux. I understand they have upgraded the 2.8 slightly for this model but I guess time will tell. Give me the v8 any day. And why is it weird useless information? I’m just commenting on my opinions from driving and towing with both engines. The v8 towed better than my hilux.
Most new 4wd's are much quicker these days because of the 8 and 10 speed transmissions, what is the comparison in rebuild cost between an auto and a manual? I've heard 10k plus for a F250 auto rebuild.
Ask anyone in the outback who got the turbo 4 pot VW duel CSB thinking it was a good thing… A good thing for the school run or driving on and off site, but so many ended up on the side of the road because they are too highly strung. Same with the Ranger. Great for transport stages, but for actual work? No thanks.
Your V8 is running 33" tyres and the 4cyl is running 31" tyres - not a fair acceleration test. And not sure why you'd do an accelleration test on a farm truck?
Keen to see the same test loaded to near gvm towing a heavy trailer (it might still be the same result). But the real test will be loaded with a trailer down a long grade or off road down a steep incline Id like to see the engine braking. Will be asking a lot of the brakes in the auto with the little engine
Anyone can make a highly tuned 4 cylinder motor faster than a detuned v8 , the difference is a strange phenomenon called reliability ! The more hi tech you make it , the less reliable your toy becomes , some people want reliability and dont give a toss about having 100 ecus' and 2500 sensors to make your toy the best , land rover have yet to learn that , Toyota should not be playing such foolish games on the 70 series , which was the most reliable offroader around , now they put in the seriously flawed and unreliable gd6 4 cylinder in it with all the problems inherited from the hilux and fortuners , well done , sack the bean counters and let the engineers build the cars .
Let’s basic tune 100hp into the 2.8 and see how long it lasts, oh that’s right, you can’t.. The turbo is barely spinning on the V8.. The 2.8 is at its limits. Pump the money into horsepower/torque and watch it throw a leg out of bed. There’s no replacement for displacement and that will NEVER change.
@@fullboost unfortunately we live in a world where emissions laws with very flawed “science” is destroying modern ICE with heaps of potential left in the table leaving manufacturers no choice but to detune and abandon good, reliable engines that have their place in this world. Their capital is also squandered trying to please the climate fascists that will never be pleased until there is no private transportation at all, that’s a whole different subject but the moral of the story is the root cause of the 1VD being attacked for various reasons is something within Toyota’s ability to address easily but unfortunately in this point in time a higher power is pulling the strings with a vendetta against anything and everything us as petrol and diesel heads admire. Surely you understand that. The root cause for the 1VD’s lack of anything is not Toyota at all.
Okay so like all the other small diesels before it that have exceeded 1000hp+? You literally can tune them to better performance of the v8, look at Thailand ffs. They're using a little 3 litre 4jj1 and are in the 7s at the quarter.
Let’s continue: An automatic gearbox is evidently superior for off-roading than a manual one. Clearly, the ability to push start a vehicle is a glaring disadvantage. And of course, 4 is a much larger number than 8. There are so many nonsenses in our world, and it’s no wonder why so many people believe in utter nonsense.
@@joshthomas2536 If you believe that only native-born individuals reside in Australia, you might be surprised to learn about its cultural and ethnic diversity. In Australia, 28-33% of the population was born overseas, according to the 2021 Census. Additionally, only 4% of Australians are Indigenous. This diversity raises an interesting question: how do we define the identity of people with dual citizenship, who split their time between two countries can speak 3, 4 and more languages and consider both countries as their homeland? Moreover, how does this relate to the new LC 70 series? It might seem unrelated, but often, when lacking concrete evidence or proof, people tend to shift the conversation to personal or individual topics. Educating oneself further can lead to fewer misconceptions and realisations, like understanding that 4 is indeed a larger number than 2. Life is full of such revelations!

Never late in a 2.8! 😂
*Never great in a 2.8!
I love the new landy
I love them new and old :D
I can only dream of these engines😂 I still have my 2001 Hilux 3l 2.8 NA. Slow as hell but ultra reliable😅
LC and 4 pots don’t mix. Politically wrong.
Thank you for this - factory standards drag race. The culture of deleting the Toyota warranty with GVM upgrades, catch-cans and tunes is strong with the V8 fan-boys though!
“Tonight Show featuring Luke & Luke” oh what a feeling. Great vid 😅.
Ok, the 4 cylinder is faster in a drag, but what about the long game? Is the 4 cylinder still going to be a reliable workhorse with 500,000+ k's on the clock?
Its not faster in a drag race…
Nothing an LS swap can't fix and make it more reliable.
What back to petrol
You serious
More reliable lol.😂
The v8s are undertuned from factory. Toyota deliberately did this to under stress the motor. Anyone who truly knows landcruisers is that they where made to last not go fast.
Except they don't last.....
@@TasmanianDevil3 they do mate! My previous boss owned one with 600,000kms on the clock. Never been rebuilt, apart from water pump replacement, injectors few other nic nacs like most cars would over time.
@@stano2695 they really dont, have you seen the cost when the motor blows up lol or you fuck the gearbox
@@daniel-it2lw yes repair costs are expensive but I can only vouch for myself I own one 250,000km strong and never had an issue besides injectors
@@stano2695 I have a px1 ranger 3.2 with 270 000kms. It was a one owner so it's original motor and everything,
It's the same with any car. If you look after it it will last. But the V8 cruiser are massively over priced and slow as balls compared to the market haha. You can't justify the price when the only argument in their favour is "reliability"
This is going to hurt a lot of egos 😂
Yeah true, the V8 79 series has gotta be one of the slowest (and lowest power to weight) utes on the road now, probably no quicker then a Mahindra 🤦😂
Just wondering with the maintenance and repair bills with the new one ? Like 2.8 litre doing the same power as the v8 4.5 litre.. ? Cheers 🍻
I'm very keen to re-shell a 1gd auto 70 series cruiser into one of my petrol 80 series.
It's all fun and games till you see the price tag
The way the market is pushing for the new 70 series is embarrassing.
OMG IS THAT A SUZUKI JIMNY!?!?
The real test will be how reliable they are. The older rigs dont break even when your abusing the fuck out of them. Which is pretty important if your in the outback towing a off road van through a tough 4wd track or just rescuing ya mates in their hiluxs and tritons.
if was going to spend big money on a 4wd for the city then i have to buy a big American truck
Come visit me in South Africa 🇿🇦 for a few updates; case studies that will quickly sort out your fanboy bias with actual facts, not expired perception.
@@Afriqueleblanq why the fuck would i ever go to south africa? your calling me a fan boi but ahh i own a barra.
i just work on farm machinery. And theres a reason they run big old heavy duty v8s on all of them
Hey guys, supposedly the 2.8 LC has a catch can from factory, can you confirm this?
Would love to see a review over a couple of days with some weight to simulate an overlander. Load both with 500kg and hook up an offroad camper/trailer then test them on different surfaces over proper distances. I expect the V8 to do better in the sand then or maybe the auto gearbox of the new one will outperform the old bull? I do prefer manual when 4x4-ing but nowadays the autoboxes are pretty good.
4 pot will win. 70 nm's more is more and will be noticeable. V8's have never had much torque for towing.
@@jethrohowell Drive them both before you decide, you can't go wrong either way, they're Toyotas after all! All the best mate! 👍
New catless downpipe, short exhaust, no mufflers, side exit. She'll whistle
Looks like a Suzuki Jimny
Hilarious, love it 👍
Only half as many pistons to crack! Toyota saving money on recalls!
The V8 in standard form with DPF is a fuggin dog. Not a fan of the 2.8 but ots gotta be better than the v8.
Straight to autosalon #turbo4banga
Both motors are the same on paper almost but that auto with the extra ratio really makes a difference. I’d still prefer the v8 though for a lower stressed motor. I can’t see that 4cyl doing 500000+km
Even gasoline toyota's do 500,000+km
This previous model camry gasoline did 900+
ruclips.net/video/VKGxMQ0TXjY/видео.html
The 2.8 produces 70nm more
The fact that we don't get the manual transmission in the new 79 series is a real disappointment
Another Hilux gearbox fanboy 😂😂😂
Tall trucks and old mate the tree, makes Luke look like an elf.
Where would you put a second battery???
Fj Cruiser front end..
This is what happens when a Landcruiser, Fj cruiser and a Hilux throw their keys in the bowl.. 😅😂
$95K!!!! 😱
Those retro mirrors are nice
the big block Jimny lol
What's the weight difference of the two motors/trans?
Can someone do a test with them both at 3.3ton which they will eventually run at.
Results will be the same or better for the 2.8. 4cyl has 70nm more torque.
"there's no replacement for... Boost"😂 true though, boost is displacement at the end of the day. Though what I don't understand is why you have 2 Toyotas where the front end is finished but the back end looks like an x-ray
If they're ditching the V8, which is why they have the wider diff track in the front, will they now go back to the narrower front diff?
Apparently the axle widths, front and back have not changed. Why, I'll never know, maybe just toyota being lazy ?
The comment section is all most as good as the video 🤣😂
How do Toyota manage to get such little power out of a turbo V8?
Toyota tuned it to be a tractor from factory. A remap on the ECU changes it completely, making drive much better on the streets..
When are idiots, gonna understand that 4x4 are not drag. Cars are not meant to go on a straight line. It’s like saying which Ferrari is best to take on the sand.
isn't that speedo reminiscent of the original Landcruiser's?
The Flog wagon
Omg all the west Australians are going to hate it
They won’t be able to straight pipe it and get the v8 sounds they love to get with the 4” straight pipe to drive threw perth on there days off
Hahaha 🤣
hpw about auto v8 and auto 4cyl. that would be the true test. dual cab for both etc.... you have to test apples with apples.
On looks I cancelled my new dual cab order as I just don't like the front end, will look at a now old style dual cab somewhere down the line.
Time will tell with 😊
Still looks like a tractor from the 1980's inside. No comfortable interior, lots of plastic and probably an over inflated price tag.
I like the simple interior.
This video is about the vehicles not on and talking !
Please make a FC3S Rx7 and MK3 Supra I love 90s shirt.
That was the slowest drag race in history.
All the v8s are gonna hate this, no where to hide now
To be fair, these 2 vehicles aren’t race cars. The auto will always beat the manual between these 2. Start putting a big load on the 4cyl and see how it goes compared to the v8. I don’t think the 4cyl will cut it to be honest. My hilux is absolutely gutless when towing and the v8 just pulls. I know what I would pick.
Well the 4 cylinder has more torque regardless, so it would win in towing. Any other weird useless things you'd like to bring up?
@@joshthomas2536 just saying mate. I have the 2.8 in my hilux which isn’t the best when towing and I have towed with the v8 which was a lot better to tow with and could hold the power up hills better than my hilux. I understand they have upgraded the 2.8 slightly for this model but I guess time will tell. Give me the v8 any day. And why is it weird useless information? I’m just commenting on my opinions from driving and towing with both engines. The v8 towed better than my hilux.
The bonnet looks wierd on the new one though
could you have possibly found a dorkier city geeb to talk about a car he knows nothing about
We searched but no one was dorkier sorry
Dual cab v single cab. I could of told you this 5 years ago. Cheap rego qld. Cheap fuel. And the 6 sead manual 4 is just as quick.
Most new 4wd's are much quicker these days because of the 8 and 10 speed transmissions, what is the comparison in rebuild cost between an auto and a manual? I've heard 10k plus for a F250 auto rebuild.
Get a little tune on the v8 and repeat this segment.. 😎
300k as peak performance?... does it run on Adblue?
Nothing runs on Addblue
Research the method
Steady state them on the dyno and see what one derates first.
The v8
@@Ozsmallbore I wonder if the water to air charge air cooler heat soaks
Ask anyone in the outback who got the turbo 4 pot VW duel CSB thinking it was a good thing…
A good thing for the school run or driving on and off site, but so many ended up on the side of the road because they are too highly strung.
Same with the Ranger.
Great for transport stages, but for actual work? No thanks.
Your V8 is running 33" tyres and the 4cyl is running 31" tyres - not a fair acceleration test. And not sure why you'd do an accelleration test on a farm truck?
Yes thats not fair at all, although the v8 obviously has 50-60% more power when tuned normally but farm truck?? These are homosexuals city suv’s today
V8 anyday over whatever pot. The reality is Smaller turbo engines are not comparable
Why do you need to tune it? Not everyone wants to void Thier warranty.
Can't imagine buying a car that you have to tune so it doesn't completely suck!
There literally is a replacement for displacement though, it's called forced induction
Give both engines the same boost and tuning… see how they go!
then with V8 you run out of fuel 4 times faster ;) It is always about a compromise.
Like the nonsense of having Australia and Ukraine (2 completely opposite countries) in the same username? Now that I would believe
@@joshthomas2536
If you believe that only native-born individuals reside in Australia, you might be surprised to learn about its cultural and ethnic diversity.
V8 the best
GIVE ME A. V8 LANDCRUISER ANY DAY OF THE WEEK 🤠⭐🦅👍
The last new Toyota I bought was in 1985 and it was a BJ 73 with a 3 lt four cylinder engine
And had way more torque than the 6 cylinder of the day
So 40 years on and nothing changes at Toyota 🤦♂️🤦♂️
The grill is nearly the same as my one
It was only 85 & 86 had the cross hatch type grill
I want one, not for 88 grand though
the 79 series where do i start ohh what a shitbox should be the slogan in the ads by far the worst sounding v8 in history 150kw from a 4.5L turbocharged engine the transmission is dog shit have to shift slowly or it doesn't go into gear the engine is torque limited to 430NM because toyota refused to change the clutch from the 1hd cruiser in 2007 and the rear track makes them highly unstable at highway speeds with a full/tall load in the tray
i had to drive a 2017 model from grafton to brisbane and back no load just me in the car for work and it chewed through 150L to do just under 900kms glad i wasn't footing the bill
The shifter is from the 300😅
