I just picked up the same mixer and am going to clean it up as well. Not taking it all apart though. That gear has a lot of play and very little wear I think on purpose. 1/2 hp motor is big enough. The original frame has been added on to with longer legs and the wheels. These mixers were supposed to sit in a truck bed so that base frame was much shorter.
