- Szarka of www.magpiegemst... gives a quick demonstration of how to use hammers on wire to create texture and to strengthen wire. This is part two since youtube stopped the download half way through the first one. To see part one of this video • How to hammer wire for...
I would like to ask, please. How are you controlling the camera from the front?
I tried using a camera but that didn't work for me since I have to see what i am filming. I HATE having anyone around when I film so I am using the webcam on my laptop. Not the best for picture but I find I can make sure I am showing what I want to show.
That really all depends on what you are working on anywhere from 22 to 12 gauge. Yes silver hammers nicely and is a bit harder to hammer but also feels and looks different. Just go slow and hammer gently if that makes sense. feel the wire.
One way is to draw what you want on a piece of paper and then slowly form the wire to that shape.
Thanks and your off to a good start at being a wire addict - ok we have two shapes now.
unfortunately, I can't hear/understand a word you said, and I had all speakers turned up to 100%
That sucks! No one else has had that problem I hope
I know this video is old, and to be honest I watch Soo many videos so often to learn new stuff, I've been making and selling jewelry for about 4 years but I'm just getting into wire stuff-my question is can I do this work hardening/hammering technique with Sterling silver plated jewelry and also what about the wire thats sold everywhere that says tarnish resistant? It's important to be to make jewelry that's not going to tarnish at all or for a very long time...and I'm thinking with jewelry wire that's plated, all the plating will be hammered off? If I'm correct in this....what are some other wire options? Would I just have to go to silver filled or pure? I use lot of stainless steel in my jewelry making but I'm not sure, seems I can't find it in all guages!?!. Any help would be so appreciative...I've actually never commented on videos....I've subscribed to yours-i really love ur style of teaching xo
There are some artisan wires people say they can hammer with no I'll affect. I use sterling and copper and I stay away from anything nontarnish because I patina almost everything I make. I would try hammering them and see.
Come to Facebook and look up "Jewelry Makers and Bead Lovers". That's one of my groups with over 10000 jewelry makers. Lots of knowledge and advise and probably many people who would have a better answer than me because I only is solid metals.
Yay! That is nice to hear and glad my mumbling about helped.
I will put it on the list to show, thanks for the ideas.
Can you recommend a good hammer and bench block brand to try these techniques with? I'm new to jewelry making and need supplies. Thanks so much!
Just discovered your videos... So helpful for a beginner. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
I found this video because I'm wanting to hammer gold-filled wire into an arm cuff. How do you hammer the wire once it's been formed into a circle but need to hammer the outer circumference?
Sure like what kinds of shapes?
my problem is tool marks and uneven thickness. my items are coming out looking like I left them on the railroad tracks :/
Love your videos, I have only started creating wire jewellery a couple of mouths ago and I have learned a lot from your channel... its very daunting starting out not knowing what tools to use.. or buy' I will be looking forward to starting some hammering soon. I would also like to learn how to make some shapes, some angel wings would be nice, I have tried some but I didn't like the result. wishing you many blessings and success for 2013 Andrea
Hi,I am new to wire jewellery making and after watching your videos I feel a lot more confident in trying new ideas,I was getting the marks in my wire from hammering but after watching you and listening to your very helpful tips my pieces have turned out a lot neater and a lot less marked up from the hammer .Thankyou so much,I am really looking forward to seeing more helpful tips and ideas from you in 2013...Oh by the way I hope you are feeling better too...Karenlee from Australia....
Hi there! Thank you so much for your video. I do have a question - what gauge wires do you find the best to work with? Have you ever tried to hammer sterling silver? If so, do you find certain brands to be better to work with? Is it better to work with fine silver?
Dear Szarka,
I so much appreciate this video (both part 1 & 2). Even though it seemed like an obvious skill to you. I learned a few good tips and really appreciate the distinction you made between use of different hammers. Your manner is so pleasant and easy to learn from. Thanks,
Beryl
Thank you for responding. Wow, you did a great job of just using a webcam. I've been trying to solve this problem with my camera or buying a video camera for the last year. Trying to control it myself and see what is appearing has been a problem. I may have to go the webcam way myself. I found solutions but for thousands of dollars.
It was helpful. Now I need a block so I can stop hammering my wire directly on wood.
Aw thanks!
I like your nails :)
leighmossien2009 heh thanks.
thank you!
