- Szarka from www.magpiegemstones.com shows different hammers, discusses their application in jewelry making, specifically wire wrapped jewelry. She also demonstrates how to hammer wire with a domed hammer. It appears the last half showing how to hammer has been cut off by youtube, I will be downloading another video soon. Here is part 2 • How to hammer wire for...

Came back to watch a second time. Just the info and technique I was looking for. Direct and concise description of results from differect ways of hammering wire.
Szarka, I love it when you post videos! I just want to say thanks for all the effort you put forth!
Not silly at all! I KNEW I needed a domed hammer! Those gouges made by my cheap flat edged hammer were driving me nuts, and I thought it was my technique. Thank you for this video, it has saved me from thinking I was losing my marbles!
Thank you! This video has answered a LOT of questions for me! Again! THANK YOU!
This is the video that helped me figure out why I always made marks, then I bought a domed hammer. Thank you!
I appreciate your quick answer. I sure will. Thanks again, and please, continue doing these incredible videos.
Thanks! I'm new to hammering/texturing and watching your video showed me what's wrong with my hammer... it's flat instead if domed. I tried to use the sharp edge for texturing a pattern but it didn't look so great. I'm sure someone experienced such as yourself could demonstrate how to achieve a nice pattern without a special hammerhead but I may have to invest in a textured hammer. Again, thanks for sharing! 🙂
This was very helpful! Thank you for making this video!
Thank you for all those important tips on how to flatten wire.
Thay was very useful thanks, just got my first hammer and have been most lucky in getting a dome faced just like the one you were using ....even though i had no clue
Thanks for sharing. I did enjoy this tutorial and you answered questions I've had.
again...thanks. :)
I have been living in Cusco Peru for a while now and haven't been able to find a chasing hammer or something like that so I use a hammer I bought from a hardware store and works ok. I have a friend coming to visit from the States in April and I have asked him to buy a chasing hammer and a steel block for me! But copper is something I can easily get here!
That was great! For a newbie. That was very helpful!
Sunshine clothes are amazing and always my go to for cleaning copper. You can also rub katsup just on the copper and not the pearl and rinse in just warm water and that should do it. use a soft cloth as you rub it in.
I know I have uploaded the video three times and youtube just keeps cutting it off, I will try downloading the second half in a new video.
Szarka, I have a question for you.... I just bought 6g copper from a hardware store, hammered it, shaped it into a gorgeous ring only to find out it gets a nasty color after using it! How can I clean it? This piece has pearls so I cannot use the common cleaners on the market. Can you help me? Thanks a lot...
Great tips on hammers and hammering. I'm thinking about getting into that, because the wire looks great flat. Thanks for sharing. :)
Oh thanks Angela I appreciate it.
don't know if you know the video just stops at cutting the wire. Is there going to be another video on the rest. Thank you for your videos.
That square profile hammer is from Japan - a typical example. Look in your woodworking shops for that style. It is hard enough for jewellery-making, I would think.
Lol , it does seem silly but it's helped me to watch you hammer 🤗
Another great video! Thanks, Szarka.
Oh, My . . . I love your texturing hammer . . . . where did you buy it? (you show it at 1:00mins).
My primary question and concern is, if you're using dead soft wire for wire wrapping, something intricate, how do you make sure that it's nice and sturdy (hard) when you're done? You can't just hammer it, I assume. I mostly worry about the bail on pendants. Love your tutorials.
As far as I know, you can hammer dead soft wire; doing that "work hardens" it too, I believe. In fact, the more you work dead soft wire, the more it hardens off, so often you have to be real economical with the movement of the wire when making something from it. But Szarka who posted the video will know more about this.
gorgeous
I thought I answered this but it is not showing now. I think it is a beadsmith hammer so any bead store should be able to get it for you.
subscribed!
Oh I bet - I hope they find one that works for you!
Hi, I use a regular ball peen hammer and I always notice how wire workers can get 18 guage wire ends to really flatten out like a paddle, but no matter how long or hard I hammer it, nothing really seems to happen, what am I doing wrong? I'm using a hard plexi surface, should I get a metal surface??
You have to hammer on a metal block or anvil if you want to change the shape of the metal.
Okay Thank you so much!
I usually flatten wire with my forehead. But I cant seem to keep it straight after hitting it so many times. Ill try using a hammer.
Part 2 is now linked above in the video description.
If you go to my website magpiegemstones (dot) com on the resource page is a bunch of great articles on copper, go take a peek at those and it should answer all your questions plus some.
i think the square hammer is called a tack hammer - www.menards.com/main/tools-hardware/hand-tools/hammers/masterforce-reg-5-oz-tack-hammer/p-1827559-c-9143.htm?tid=-2679300164672224396
Also chances of thumb smacking are def greatly increased when talking to camera at same time!
Do you recommend a 4 oz or 8 oz ball peen hammer for working with all different size wire 20-22. Do you think I'm better off getting 8oz? Please let me know :)
I really don't know. I don't know anything about ball peen hammers. I say go for the lighter one unless your working with gauges over 10.
MagpieGemstonescom The first hammer, the regular hardware sort of hammer you showed in the early part of the video, the rounded side is the ballpeen side.
***** ah well there you go. I only use the "ball pein" for texturing.
Thanks for the video and all the info :-)
Thanks a lot, I thought that i am an idiot cos I can't do nice job, now i know it's all about hammer :)
I don't know the difference between the chasing and ball peen hammer
That is a hard one to answer. Are you on Facebook?
@@MagpieGemstonescom Yes I am
Come join our group, Jewelry Makers and Bead Lovers and ask there and we will figure it out. It is an issue with different forms of jewelry making calling different hammers different things. Gold Smith's and wire wrappers have completely different vocabularies and definitions.
@@MagpieGemstonescom Thanks, looks like I was already on it. I will ask
can't u fix the lighting? you've been doing this awhile now and i do enjoy your knowledge, but the lighting. ugggggggggg
Unfortunately I can't.
or won't.
