    Good points for discussion bro. I don’t regret my 68 RFE for a second. I deleted and tuned in my truck at around 7000 miles if I recall correctly, like an idiot I know! However it’s closing in on 90 K and I have had no issues at all with it. And my only regret is going for the cushy ride of the 2500 as opposed to just getting a 3500.

    I’ve owned multiple diesels in my line of work as a hot shot. Started the ram 3500 68rfe blew the trans jumped to a 2022 ram HO with the Aisin absolutely loved it but then jumped to a 2023 Silverado 3500 (I’ve always been a Chevy guy) but after 30k miles my transmission went out so I’m once again in a HO ram. I’ve learned that in my line of work nothing handles the heavy loads better then the ram HO with the Aisin.

    I've had 2 different powerstroke ford's, a Chevy duramax and a older 6.7 Cummins. My 2021 Ram HO Cummins with Aisen is by far the strongest pulling truck out of all of them.

    I investigated this very issue before custom ordering my Ram 3500, which also included talking with a transmission specialist church buddy of mine, that advised the Aisin is expensive to maintain and repair. I also investigated the 68RFE and discovered that most of the time, the reason these things fail is because of overloading due to HO tunings and/or much larger tires w/o changing the differentials, or towing too close to (or over) the 20,000lb limit; that if these things are avoided and the tranny is serviced regularly, it is an otherwise descent machine. I then looked up the service intervals and associated costs and compared to how much towing I actually do (and at what weight) and forecasted how expensive it will be to upkeep in the future (as I am nearing retirement), arriving at the reason I bought the standard output 6.7l with the 68RFE.

      The 68rfe in my Ram failed at 49,xxx miles. Mostly Texas highway miles with about 15,000 hooked up to a half ton towable camper trailer. Ram covered it 100 percent, but they took over two months to rebuild it.

    Excellent video and explanation……I have owned both 68RFE and Aisin…..you nailed every point. Completely agree with you about the Aisin….it’s the most misunderstood transmission in the industry. Once you learn it’s characteristics and learn the pattern of its shifts, you really start to love its power and reliability. Good job explaining all this. I wouldn’t give up my 2022 Ram and current set up(Cummins HO) for any Ford or GM. Sorry but not sorry. Lol.

      When compared to the Allison 1000, it’s internal parts are more robust as the Aisin is 100lbs heavier. Problem is, the Aisin doesn’t have a tune currently to allow the horse power increases. We will see if that changes soon.

      Aisin is really a great transmission, some people would argue that it's better than an Allison which is a matter of opinion, they're both good transmissions. The problem with the 68RFE is people put programmable tuners on their truck and it raises the line pressure so high that it damages the van body and bad things start to happen then they blame the transmission. I've seen people turn up Duramax's and they break the lugs off the converter, what do you expect you go adding power, especially large amounts and your going to find the next weakest link. I have a 68RFE in my 2011 3500 and no complaints.

I never experience the really hard shifts that yourself and many others have commented on. Sure, it's a very different driving experience, especially in the lower gears, but I don't even notice it anymore. And, as you say, under load it really performs well, especially with the .410 gears. Been doing a lot of research and found that the 68rfe has a double overdrive. If you keep it in 4th which is the gear it locks in you will be fine. If you give it a lot of tune and push it hard in the double overdrive it will burn it up.

    Good points and correct but if you are towing.... Your GVRW maxes out at 14,000# with any engine or transmission and the weight of the truck is more with the Aisin and options but the GCWR are highest on the Max Tow package Aisin 4.1 43,000# vs 33,000# with the 68rfe and there is no option that covers 10,000 more towing pounds.

    Two things people don’t understand about the Ram Cummins. 68RFE is for daily driver or occasional light tow of RV couple times a year. HO Cummins with Aisin is for constantly towing and extreme use. That said I have a built 68rfe and fairly aggressive tuning and I abuse the crap out of my truck daily and when I do tow I tow hard and fast. Redhorse Motorsport built 68rfe for the win!

    I primarily only use my 2015 Ram 3500 for trips towing my fifth wheel, often with a flatbed trailer with a side by side behind the fifth wheel. Weight between 15,500 to 18,000lbs. The engine/Aisin combo is the beast for the job. Looking at the trailer trip data, which only records with the trailer connected I've had the trailer back there for 36 percent of the time I've driven the truck, and I can't tell how much with just the flatbed with the side by side since it doesn't get logged. I change the Aisin fluid myself at the 30k interval but take it in for the filter change interval because it's so messy dropping the pan. You also have to change the rear differential fluid more often if you want to avoid trouble when towing heavy. Personally I see no reason for a diesel truck unless you're putting it to work since the cost of ownership definately goes up with the heavy duty stuff.

Rarely Ford unless E0D or 400 junk and Ford discontinued them! Their heavy duty diesel transmissions built better than Dodge. And the Allison 1000/2000 is far superior to any Dodge Transmissions! I think the point is not coming out here soon enough in your video. If you buy the HD RAM to tow, the AISIN is your solution. If you buy a HD RAM as daily driver with occasional driving, the Chrysler box will get it done. As an engineer, I will take JB's bet expressed below and happily fill my thirsty Cummins fuel tank with the proceeds! Used predominantly for towing and identical heavy trailers and traversing environment, say Escapee caravaners, following the maintenance schedules, the Chrysler box will need a rebuild before the AISIN. You cannot downplay the substantial design-for-function differences.
    Now the two HD transmissions being trialed for the future HD RAMs get me excited because of both builder and more gears!

    I have a ‘22 3500 with the HO AND the AISIN tranny. I don’t tow a whole lot (more hwy miles) will it last granted doing all the maintenance it recommends?

    68rfe with a proper tune will get the job done . 68rfe dosnt like locked torque converter shifts. Proper tune will take care of that .
    To service a 68rfe you need 9 qt fluid and filters . 2 filters one spin on and one regular , with gasket and labor you are well into $500

    JB Reviews Got a question for you after having your Ram 3500 HO, if you were me what would you buy. I am going to buy a Ram 3500 trying to make up mind between HO and SO I tow a 5th wheel which isnt to heavy a 10,000 lb 5th wheel I tow probably 5-6 times a year and tow a light boat I do not plan on buying a bigger 5th wheel because I don't want anything longer because we camp in Mountains and alot of sites even my 27 ft is hard to get in and if I do buy another one I would buy something just like I got same weight. I want good MPG and I heard the Ram 3500 HO does not get good MPG like the SO which would you buy knowing my concerns the SO 68RFE or HO Aisin ?

      Tim, I have a 2021 3500 HO. Father-in-Law has a 2020 2500 SO. He gets 2-3 better MPG than I do on average empty. BUT, loaded, we get about the same. He tows a 26’ about 8500lb bumper pull, no slides. I pull a 39.5’, 3 slide w/ garage for toys, massive 5’er. Pull loaded at about 17k, trailer weight, +8k truck, and we get about the same amount of Diesel at each stop. He can’t believe it!

    Fantastic video! Just bought a 68
    rfe. Pulling 9700 pounds on the highway about 3000 miles per month. How often then should I change the transmission fluid?

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  2 года назад

      Thanks, you can follow the interval or just change it all at 60k for peace of mind especially if you are keeping it forever 👍🏾

      I have 338k on my rfe. Pulling all over the United States. All you need is a billet torque converter and DO NOT let it downshift under load...like...ever. no cruise control in the mountains. Don't pull mountains in 6th gear. That manual shift on the fly is your BEST FREIND with a 68rfe.

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  2 года назад

      What is the weak spot for not allowing it downshift?

    The Aisin is a Toyota transmission. If you do the maintenance it will last a very long time. If you get a Ram with a Cummins might as well avoid the Chrysler transmission and get the Aisin for the bullet proof combination.

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  2 года назад +1

      The Aisin is no doubt reliable but I’m willing to bet that the 68 will last just as long so long you do the maintenance on it 👍🏾

      @@JB_WhoWork no it won’t. My sons had his (68) rebuilt about at 200k. Aisin’s known to go 500k+. You get 200 out of a 68RFE, you are lucky.

    Being a Ram dealer for 30 years and owning a new Cummins every 6 months or so I can tell you without a doubt my 2021 Ram HO with the Aisin will smoke any other Ram Cummins (stock) I have ever owned.
