  • Hello all, today a quick and simple lead melt. I have gotten a bucket full of fishing lead from an uncle to melt. I'm going to make some nice and shiny ingots.

    Disclaimer: Please be aware that working with hot liquid metals is very dangerous! Do not try this at home if you do not exactly know what you do. I have done a lot of preparation and informed myself before I did my first pour.
    If you do so, make sure to wear proper personal protection gear like a full face shield, a respirator, a dusk mask, fire retarding clothing or a leather apron, good protective and heat resistant gloves and leather boots. Make sure to work safe and use proper foundry tools.
    Finally enjoy the hobby!

    Howdee my generous friend. When I was a young teen I would visit service stations and tire shops to collect old wheel weights and battery's. My dad made me a mold to make 5 to 10 oz conical downrigger fishing weights similar to these. An old pot, a soaked hardwood stick and home made charcoal in an old Hibachi BBQ. From the first time I did a pour was incredible to see the metal go to it's liquid state I was hooked, LOL. I made some good pocket cash for a few summers. Love melting anything for sure now. Thanks for the memories bud.

      Thank you for sharing some good old days memories! I had the same thing when I melted my first lead ingot, I still have it in my safe as a remembrance to my frist actual melting (I do not count in soldering :)) The beauty of a metal in liquid form is amazing, I begn my journey in metal casting some 2,5 years ago and am still learning each day. I also am following a pofessional welding school now, I am learning to do TIG welding, so beautiful! Thanks for watching my friend!

    Nice pile of Lead!!! just be careful with the fishing weights, 6:38 is what happens when there is moisture trapped inside, lucky it was not a big explosion 👍👊

      Yeah, i noticed a hissing sound while melting, I was grabbing another lead weight, so did not see how violent it was. Whilst editing I just saw that it was splattering all over the place LOL

    • @Metalstacker
      @Metalstacker  3 года назад +2

      Thanks! I really like lead as it melts and pours so easy :) I guess there was a hollow space in that particular fishing weight with perhaps some moisture trapped inside.

  • @Thewulf56
    @Thewulf56 3 года назад +1

    That was a big ole bucket of lead, did those one pieces have a hollow core that possibly held some gasses, that was a lot of turbulence, maybe hold them over the flame for a couple seconds b4 dropping them in. I like those 2 cast iron molds at the back of the pour.

    • @Metalstacker
      @Metalstacker  3 года назад +2

      I guess there was a pocket of air inside some lead weights indeed. Well I just heard a hissing sound, but just noticed how violent it was while editing LOL. Yeah I'm really digging those moulds too, I am slowly buying more and more of those cast iron molds :)

    Good amount of lead, hard to believe, but lead might be the next precious metal. It's already in high demand here in the US.
    Couldn't really tell but did you flux with boric acid? If so, try saw dust next time.
    Thanks

    What did you have your regulator set on I'm trying to use my 10 kg soon

    • @Metalstacker
      @Metalstacker  2 года назад +1

      Ah the 10kg with DFC burner I suppose? When melting lead, try to keep the regulator set at the lowest pressure possible, it will get the job done with 0.02 Mpa or less. Just keep an eye on the flame as the regulator tends to get even a bit lower than the set pressure after some time. Have fun melting some lead and make sure to wear proper protection!

Wellicht koper baren gieten?

    When you say "before it gets too hot" how's that possible? Lead doesn't flair up like zinc does. lead has a boiling point around 2000-3000°F so its impossible to get it too hot

    • @Metalstacker
      @Metalstacker  3 года назад

      Quiet sharp on that my friend! As I just had melted zinc some days before I was in the mode for low melting points, you are right, it will not flare like zinc does. It does however react with the oxygen and form a black layer on top of the melt when heating it too much, I think I was aiming at that :)
