Hi. I’m a little older but bought my dream bike at the beginning of august and did msf august 21 and 22. I took the bike to this place basically next door before the course, and after, and I followed his guidance on my own for hours and hours. First, my msf instructors had preplanned exercises all geared to get you to pass the evaluation on day two, to get the card for the dmv. There was very little of what Robert teaches involved, so I was glad I had already found his channel and started slowly with his steps to riding this way. At msf I was a 6 ft guy on a tiny bike with instructors who had a schedule to keep. All geared toward preparing for the evaluation, not making me an expert rider. There was good exercises and good information, and I am glad I went. But I spent hours and hours on my own working my butt off on what Robert said, with determination and a positive attitude. I got my endorsement but learned little from msf. Because of the hours I did of easing into Roberts advice I can throw the 840 pound motorcycle around like a toy now. Don’t be disappointed if msf doesn’t work like these videos, just use it as a building block and put in a lot of work on your own in a safe environment, and soon you will be getting out in the real world with confidence, the boss of your new bike. Two days ago, I was on a busy highway in Ocala and because of the location I had to whip a tight uturn to head home, and this practice and Roberts rules made it easy. The engine is going to keep you up, keep you from feeling like falling, with the clutch and rear brake, he’s totally right. Good luck and happy safe motorcycling!
@@jasong546 Thank you for the info and story, I hear from most people the msf more less toes than teach you much aside from how to operate the motorcycle, definitely will be practicing on my own motorcycle for slow speeds but am a bit skiddish as I don’t have crash bars for it. Just bought my first Harley this past weekend, 2006 Road King and I need all the I can get. I've rode street bikes all my life turned 62 decided to get me a Harley Davidson ....and I love it. I love this video, I'm the one who thinks if I squeeze that front brake the back is coming up lol. thanks so much for your analogy lol.
I'm not being a smartass but if you are using your front brakes on slow speed you will go down . I only use my front to slow in combination with the rear from 55-30 then after that the rear. So if you use the front mainly you are more likely to have major issues at slow speed and at high speed that back tire is levered upward because the front is digging deep in the fork and then like the bicycle you can almost instantly be sol. I honestly hope you typed in the wrong thing by mistake.

I want to thank you again Robert for the cornering tips, I find myself actually turning more sharply than I need to, and having to correct for over turning! It's actually a confidence builder. The 2nd thing I want to say another reason you preload is pure, simple physics. Remember in science class when the teacher spun up a bicycle tire and balanced it from just one end of the axle? That is centrifical force, that's what keeps the bicycle tire upright. Now picture your motorcycle's massive flywheel, well below the center of gravity, spinning at 2,000 RPM, much faster than that bicycle tire, that's the major factor that keeps the motorcycle upright at slow speed. Your bike couldn't fall down if it wanted to! It's the rider unput that makes the bike fall! Thanks again, and keep it up.
I'm in the small percentile of riders that has a motorcycle with a dry clutch. Meaning, the clutch is identical to an automobile's. I can still preload no pressure, no issues. I Like the analogy of the "tripod" makes sense if you think about it. With the front wheel turned, you have more contact patch in the horizontal or close to horizontal position.

I like how you put that Robert, riding fast is fun, but I want you to have just as much fun riding slow. I tell my son anybody can ride a bike down the highway fast, but it’s when they come to the stop sign and make that right hand turn is where you see their skill. 😉

I agree totally! Slow speed riding is harder than many people care to admit. I’ve been riding a dyna super glide for the last three years which is a step above a sportster but i bought a street glide and man what a difference especially when moving slowly
While I have not taken any of the classes -- I do watch your channel/videos and have applied the pre-load technique to my riding and it absolutely makes all the difference. My husband and I continue to practice to improve our skills (he's been riding a lot longer than me). I am still not super comfortable with slow speeds, but my riding overall has been enhanced because of your suggestions. Robert, I appreciate you sharing this information so much!!

In the cycling world we call it track standing. I use it on my bicycle all the time especially at stop signs. On a bicycle it is easier while standing with the wheel cocked one way or the other. If I need a little bit more balance in I give it a short pedal less than an 1/8 of a rotation. (Power to the rear wheel). I am a first time motorcycle rider and am seeing a lot of similarities to bicycles and motorcycles. My bike weighs 17# and going to an almost 500# motorcycle has been intimidating. I know it’s in my head but it is a struggle. Thanks for all of your instructions and confidence building. You are my number 1 go to for learning to ride.

Been riding 24 years but watching your videos has made me a better rider. You’re a great teacher, Robert. Thank you for great explanations. Greetings from South GA btw!
Balance on a bike standing still is called a track stand. Typically used by sprinters on bank turns of track cycling. The start of the race is when one cyclist starts moving forward. So the sprinter who does this the best gains the advantage of drafting off of his opponent and saving energy for final sprint attack to win. Most cyclist do put their left foot down in road cycling for two reasons. The right is typically more dominant and preferred starting in traffic and to prevent falling over in traffic if ever an emergency stop is needed in traffic. Your demonstration made me realize why it's easy for me to put left foot down being new to motorcycle. I already have muscle memory of putting my left foot down first. Cycling also makes it easier to have road awareness because I'm used to watching while riding in a 3 foot space between passing cats and parked cars or curb and drains and potholes. Thanks for the eye opener.
Hey Robert cool vid. Never thought of things that way. Benn away for some time Works been Nuts, hope you and family are doing well from last storm we here in e pa still cleaning up. Just a comment saw a chick on a nija 900, guy i work with said she had total control... told him Anyone can go fast try doing that a slow speed ... that's the REAL skill. Be safe
Track cyclists use the same method of balancing their bikes at the top of the velodrome/track before they make their "brake" to the lower part of the track for the final sprint. Thanks for the tips and pointers.✌🏽👍🏽
Thanks Robert great advice it was a beautiful week here in New Brunswick Canada was out on the wing about Three times this week and practiced every time yesterday stopped at a coffee shop and there was a few bikes in the parking lot and a parking spot in between some bikes any other time I would park somewhere else I made a unturn keeping it preloaded foot on the break and bolth feet on the pegs and parked in between the other bikes it shouldn't be a big deal but I felt a little proud of myself self and felt like saying Robert Simmons taught me that Thanks my friend have a wonderful weekend
You took me back to my mountain bike days. Another good lesson. Waiting on my drop guards soo I can get serious on this practicing. My knee is much stronger now.
Appreciate this video, bro. I'll tell you something I did a month ago. I was transferring duty stations and I had rented a trailer from uhaul to move it up to where I am working now. Well, uhaul called me the morning of and said they had no trailers and didn't give a shit about helping me out. Needless to say, I was really mad because I had to get packed and moved. Well, stupid me tried loading the bike inside the truck driving up the loading ramp. BIG MISTAKE!!! I lost power 3/4 of the way up the ramp and dumped it from about 4 feet in the air. Did $10k of damage. I was pissed and now I don't have the bike for NLT 4 months!!! So, my lesson is, if you don't have the right equipment, don't try loading your motorcycle in a truck.
Thank you one more time Mr Simmons for sharing your knowledge, we don't learn these things when we get our drivers license, basically we buy the license like in a market, it's all about money here and it's a shame, I'm glad I found this channel, preload that like button, running to a million subscribers 😁
I found that when DON'T preload on a slow speed approach to a stop, my balance is off. But when I DO preload in the same situation, it is easier to keep my motorcycle upright and creep. Power to the rear wheel is key!!
Hi Robert. Great the way explain things. Wish I was in Georgia, I’d love to practice with you. I’m in NYC where you came from. But I remember your lessons and will practice at the parking lot. Thanks man

That bit when u got on the bicycle and said cover the rear brake, put it in 1st gear.. Man.. I thought u were serious for a second .. Bicycle does have a 1st gear. Anyway .. that was hilarious man. Literally laughed out loud.
It’s “inevitable” that I would drop my bike....and I did😬 at a stop sign. I’m not even sure what happened. Uneven ground but....idk. SO embarrassing. And I wish I had practiced that other video on how to pick it up a bike. Thanks fir your great videos!
It’s my pleasure Amy! You shouldn’t be embarrassed at all. What’s really important is you’re not injured and your bike isn’t damaged. Next, I need you to know why that motorcycle dropped.
The contact patch of a motorcycle tire is rectangular. So if you orient, in your mind, the contact patches of the two tires when the handlebars are turned, it would somewhat resemble the letter T. Although, not a 90 degree relationship, it still provides much more stability than the letter I
Today I dropped my brand new Interceptor 650 twice! I was not moving but I locked the handlebar to the right both times as I used to do with the lightweight scooters. This is my first heavy bike. Now I am scared when I have to take a slow turn to the right. I am riding scooters and lightweight bikes (~100-120kgs) since 16 years and i thought i could handle this 200 kg bike but today i got my lesson. I guess I will have to ride more and then I will get used to this.
Allsome vid as allways, always, found the end where you kinda broke down the usage of thr rear brake intetesting, interesting, hear about the use of it in other vids weather it be you you Jerry and thought that it was just used to keep your speed at bay, but the thing you were saying in how you use I thought was interesting, would really.love to hear you total breakdown of just everything you are doing with it.sure wish I could met ya while you in Ohio but Columbus is a outa my comfort zone to ride to just yet
Hi Robert, I love the content and can’t wait to be able to put all that knowledge into practice; I am currently deployed somewhere hot and my 19 SGS is patiently waiting for my return. I love the look of the helmet you are wearing at the 10:30 mark of this video, can you share with us the brand/model? I find it looks so slick. Keep the great content coming!
Man keeping that butt glued to that seat, remember just as walking, hip swaying is where movement comes from. It's one of the fundamentals, that I know and still 30 years later, I have to resist that urge to come off of it and lose your center of gravity and then bad things start from there!
Try getting adjustable handlebars like Helibars and or a seat to reduce reach. Rider Ergonomics is important for comfort and performance of skills. Surprised it's not stressed as much in motorcycle that go faster and weigh more than bicycle.
Good stuff Mike. I often tell people who are changing their handlebars to turn the bats to the right full lock and if they can’t reach their clutch handle comfortably, they may want to reconsider. But you’re good… Then again, would you be better if you didn’t have to lean forward?🤔😊
Hello. Thank you for all of your content it’s been very helpful and appreciated! Can you please address front tire grip trust? I understand about lean angles and how my motorcycle is far below the 45° angle and all of that but still… Maybe do a “short” about it? As soon as I start to feel the bike lean from a dead stop uturn and I have the revs up and I got the handlebars locked and the friction zone is all good and then the front suspension starts to compress and I feel pressure on the bars to hold the front tire turned, I suddenly feel like I’m on a dirtbike on dirt and I’m going to push the front tire out from under me. It’s ridiculous because I’ve been been riding since I was 6 years old of course starting in the dirt and getting on the street at 16 and riding ever since. I ride every day now on a 2022 Road King special and I can kind of do everything and scrape my floorboards but it just scares the crap out of me and I feel like I got away with one every time. I watch other RUclipsrs and nobody really discusses it much so I feel like it’s just a given that the front tire will stick without a front brake grab and I’m having a “duh dude” situation goin on here. Anyways thank you very much for reading my long message lol Thanks again Mike

Absolutely!!
That is the best lesson on locking the handlebars that I have yet to see. The bicycle example was great.... now to practice.

Definitely i feared it because of riding a push bike and having handlebars turning too far. Getting to full lock now though thanks to you 😊

Being certified on the Mountain bike at work helped me when I went through motor school. It's the same concept.
Yes it is. Just less intimidating. 👍🏾

Robert you hit the nail on the head AGAIN! Thanks for the video and the clarity on the lock out of the front wheel, totally makes sense.👌
Thank you very much! It’s my pleasure. 😊
It’s my pleasure. 😊 Thank you for that information!

Track cyclists use the same method of balancing their bikes at the top of the velodrome/track before they make their "brake" to the lower part of the track for the final sprint.
Thanks for the tips and pointers.✌🏽👍🏽

Thank you. I’m sorry to hear that, but the Nation appreciates you sharing that story. 👍🏾

I found that when DON'T preload on a slow speed approach to a stop, my balance is off.
But when I DO preload in the same situation, it is easier to keep my motorcycle upright and creep.

Thanks for the video and encouragement sir. You've boosted my confidence immensely.
It’s my pleasure. That’s the #1 goal because once your confidence is boosted, everything else will follow.
The contact patch of a motorcycle tire is rectangular. So if you orient, in your mind, the contact patches of the two tires when the handlebars are turned, it would somewhat resemble the letter T. Although, not a 90 degree relationship, it still provides much more stability than the letter I

Please make one more video like this... But this time more practical and traffic environment
I have to lean forward to reach a full lock on the handle bars. I try to practice doing a full lock turn every time I get on my bike.
I understand about lean angles and how my motorcycle is far below the 45° angle and all of that but still…
Maybe do a “short” about it?
Anyways thank you very much for reading my long message lol
Thanks again
Mike
