Zack, How refreshing to see a legendary Generation 1 Tacoma built by the people in Fremont, California that built the Tacoma Legend. It is also a thrill to see a manual, rear wheel drive, single cab pickup which emphasizes/maximizes the bed not the cab. Heck, it even has a bench seat!!🤩🤩
3:29 looking at that steering wheel on this video brings me so much childhood memories when Grewing up with a 2004 toyota hiace (H100) which i had loved, i remembered as a 6-year-old my father used to let me sit on his lap and steer the van, and looking at the video reminds me a lot of that day 🥲🥲
My favorite thing about these is the bed is so easy to load and unload. Makes me think ease of use was at the top of Toyota's feature list. Can't think of any new truck today that has a bed that would be as easy to use as the first gen Tacomas.
As much as I enjoyed the review of the pickup, I was more impressed with how comfortable you've become in front of the camera. This entire video was natural and organic in nature. You did an excellent job!
Had no idea the 1st gen looked almost exactly like the pickups. God I love trucks like this. Such a shame what happened to CAFE standards and regulations. They are the perfect size and simple (not to mention cheaper.)
5:51 - I liked the trucks when they had sealed beam headlights - before the composites. They looked more aggressive. The lines on the side of the truck are nice, too. It didnt work as a stepside, though. That was a misstep to keep up with Ford & GM.
Bought a 99'Tacoma, base model 3 years back with 364,000 on the clock ...rebuilt the whole top, auto and shifts as smooth as silk... and, there's no rust whatsoever on the frame 😁
This is what I have (with the backseat though) bought from my grandpa when I was 17, now I'm 32, I am beginning to be nervous that it's a money pit. But I love it for sentimental reasons, and people are always trying to buy it off me. I really hope I have this truck for the rest of my life. Unfortunately I'm not knowledgable about cars enough to fix everything myself. We've been through a lot, but most recently the driver's side door handle and lock is broken, and the mechanic was worried about taking apart the entire door and not being able to find the parts to put it back together. Regardless, I'll crawl over the passenger side to get in my tacoma forever if I have to.
well yes and no. the toyota truck line just had a nuclear recall as bad as the beds almost. this is made and used by papan as well as has final say. Toyota - generally most reliable cars - but trucks get these huge obvious greedy mistakes.
I wanna add that having six lugs doesn't necessarily mean your Tacoma has 4 wheel drive. Base model Tacoma Prerunners have two wheel drive as well as six bolts. though that's a whole different engine and suspension package, so I'm not sure if that means anything for this video
My FIL owns a 99, pretty much same spec except for the factory A/C and updated dash with a passenger airbag. Also a CA truck with a healthy frame. The sheetmetal is another story, though as it developed rust bubbles around the top mounted stop light a couple years ago. He isn't fixing that as the truck has over 230K miles and dings and dents all over but he's kept up with maintenance and recently replaced plugs, radiator, both exterior handles (they break quite easily) front control arms and valve cover gasket. That's probably the biggest expense he has done over the last 10 yrs he has owned it. So overall not bad
Where's the trick power tailgate? Or the backup camera, the 360 degree camera, the front camera, the giant screen, the magic towing app, the...oh, yeah, that's right, it's a truck.
Great truck but those rims look so stupid. I know it’s just me but I also hate after market radios, I don’t care if it had car play because it looks tacky and out of place.
toyota cant make turbo engines, they never been able, the new ones have huge issues, now its not just the bad frame, the engine and transmission is awful too

Had an 85, a 90 a 95 a 97 a 2001 a 2003. All manuals. Most dependable trucks ever
It makes me happy to see first-gen Tacomas on the road. Such a simple design that can run forever, rust issues notwithstanding.
I wish I had something so cheap and simple like this. Screw new cars and all their technology…..simplicity is king.
Best old school pickup of its era!!
I own an 02 in the same spec as this one. Base as base can get. It's the best vehicle I've ever owned! Love these Tacomas!
A+ on the bed review. Covered all the important stuff without getting bogged down with all the little details 😂
The cup holders tho

And easy to step up into the bed too. Now to you gotta jump up backwards to sit on your butt, and then rotate your legs in and stand.
Owned 2 of these 1st gen Tacos. Great, bulletproof trucks. Lots of these in California where rust aint too much of an issue.
Toyota built is trucks very well to last a long time and be reliable
Toyota is also famous for building extremely boring cars
toyota trucks are the biggest rust bucket avail in canada, they generaly last 5-6 years
@@josh3221ify boring and reliable, at least that's what they used to be known for... those modern tundra's are having such bad engine problems
As much as I enjoyed the review of the pickup, I was more impressed with how comfortable you've become in front of the camera. This entire video was natural and organic in nature. You did an excellent job!
How I wish this truck was still on sale. I don’t need a truck that’s the size of a boat.
Mustang GT rims on a Tacoma actually look pretty good
Do you know how many inches wide they are? I'm assuming 8 or 9
Had no idea the 1st gen looked almost exactly like the pickups.

i got one of these with the automatic and the xtra cab and its been so fun, even started a solo landscaping/lawncare buisness

The analogy of the name and “RUclipsr” segment 😂
The fact that this truck is still motoring along is a testament to Toyota quality.
these in canada splitted in half in about 5 years, i havent seen a toyota truck older than 2015 for awhile

Best review yet! I may be partial as I'm also a owner of a 1st gen tacoma
Love my 97 taco, best purchase I’ve made❤

Ought to put a laser engraved plaque on it by this point, it's a classic!
I want one of these 1st gen Tacoma but my god there hard and kinda expensive ppl be taxing these but now I know where there so reliable and simple
Always loved the 90s mini trucks.
4:52 is that a factory NA miata shift knob?
yup, out of a 95!
That's a nice looking, honest little truck. Thanks for showing it to us RUclipsr...er, I mean Zack.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BIG FRIGGIN BOTTLE!!!!
Its the truck of the future!
lmao AT 4:54 how the camera focused on the shifter knob and now everything but the knob was shaking XD
Awesome little truck. 😊
Zack, thanks for the BFB sticker!
Now thats a truck!!!!
That is a refreshing thing to see... A basic truck to do truck stuff. I miss those.
its perfect
A friend of mine has a 1998 he still drives daily
Got a 97 same color. 4x4 manual with 120k no issues
Where's the trick power tailgate? Or the backup camera, the 360 degree camera, the front camera, the giant screen, the magic towing app, the...oh, yeah, that's right, it's a truck.
With the Ford Rims Nicee!!!!!!
Very nice! Not a fan of these after the 1st gen’s, the new ones are such outdated junk.
that MSRP today would still be under $26,000. How times have changed.
I love that color on the truck, though I'd never own it.
Are those rims 8 or 9 inches wide?
Hilux in Australia. Legendary reliability.!👍👍🇭🇲
It's a good looking truck much better than the bloated overstyled mess that are on the roads today
9:18 my former neighbor used to own a truck like this until it rusted out.
Why does the 5-speed shifter look like it's trembling? Is it scared or something?
I love manual transmission cars with no tac. It’s so stupid now that cvt mini vans have a huge tac in the gauge cluster for no point.
Great truck but those rims look so stupid. I know it’s just me but I also hate after market radios, I don’t care if it had car play because it looks tacky and out of place.
The NA miata shifter actually kinda fits better than you'd think
I was wondering if anyone would catch that!
great trucks
A mechanic thinks Toyota is making a big mistake going to turbo as those don't last as long as regular non-turbo engine
I agree wit him
toyota cant make turbo engines, they never been able, the new ones have huge issues, now its not just the bad frame, the engine and transmission is awful too
The original 🌮 taco
Super Easy to load a Dirt-Bike with the low bed.
I love tacos
Nice
Those Ford center caps look insulting to the Toyota lol
What is with the radio station voice??? Why can't you just talk to us
