  • DIY Victorian Lampshade | Attempting to make 2 Lampshades | Hello everyone and welcome or welcome back. I have been working on these two lampshades on and off for quite a few months now and it has ben such a fun and unique project. I've never tried anything quite like it but new when I stumbled across it that I had to take a stab at it. I ordered my wire frames back in late march/early April (see link below) had them custom welded and shipped out to me.
    I then began thinking of the design and look I was going for and decided on this rich red for my apothecary/sewing room/office that I've been renovating (reveal is coming in just a few weeks so keep your eyes out) and a green for my dining room. I wanted to have a test run first so I could better understand how to do things but ended up filming the process for both.
    I'm showing you how I made these two victorian inspired lampshades and all the things I did and what I learned during the process.

    OMG, i am so surprised this doesn't have more views! most other videos on victorian lampshade making seemed to come from people who already had a background in making them. it's easy as hell to get psyched out of making more intensive projects like this, especially when your only point of reference is from someone who makes it look so effortless.
    it's nice to have an informative video about the process from someone who is also learning! thank you so much, your end products are so beautiful!!!

    Thankyou for a great video. I'm designing a parlour for the basement and I have been thinking victorian now with your lamp idea shades it's decided. I have a couple bronze statues for the base. I was thinking stained glass shades but yours look much more fitting. Now I will build the wire frames to fit. I'd like to see the room you put the shade in.

    thank you for this video! those are very ambitious (?) shades to start with.
    i love the way you described what you did and why -- the reason for the design elements.
    it is often difficult to capture the result of a lighting project - they so often look different in person vs in still images or video.
    it is my impression that "darkness" in the result is intentional. these are not for reading lights, they are to provide light necessary to highlight their own features and create a dark but navigable space - where the shades themselves seem to consume the light. ❤

    • @NasyaAcostaSmith
      @NasyaAcostaSmith  6 месяцев назад

      Thank you so much for your comment 🖤 Yes absolutely, they defiantly lean more towards being decor or art rather than the most functional of light sources

    Beautiful! I’m doing lots of research about this craft before I attempt one myself. The only thing you could have done to make your life a lot easier (according to what I’ve found online) is to cut your fabric on the bias. Then you can pull and tug your fabric and create like a taught drum effect over the sections. Bias creates stretch so you’ll not need to wrestle with the fabric to make it lay ‘flat’. I hope this is helpful to anyone reading!! P.S I am Living for the red one ❤

    • @NasyaAcostaSmith
      @NasyaAcostaSmith  Год назад +1

      Ahh that feels so obvious now that you say it, I got it pretty tight but there was some streaking in the fabric, cutting on the bias would have definitely solved that. Thank you for your comment 🖤

    This is such a stunning art form that is rarely seen today. Bravo to you for keeping it alive! You are a true artiste!! I just adore everything you did on both shades but if I had to choose, the second is more my personal style but both are gorgeous!! I've been inching my way to this stunning art form by first experimenting on existing shades in my home just to practice and they do look better but I am aching to give this a try finally! I can’t figure out the pleating on a lamp. Granted I just picked up a needle 2 days ago (seriously) but man I don’t know if it is in the measurement, how taught you draw it or what. If you double the width do I also double the height? Help me please!

    • @NasyaAcostaSmith
      @NasyaAcostaSmith  Год назад

      It honestly took me a few tries. I didn't double the height just made sure I had a good "seam allowance" as I did with all the other pieces. It's a lot in the pulling the top fabric taught it starts to naturally create these pleats and then you can go in and pin and adjust the pleats before sewing🖤

    • @NasyaAcostaSmith
      @NasyaAcostaSmith  Год назад

      I'm not sure how much overseas shipping would be from the place I bought mine from (link in the description) but you can search for a German lampshade frame company. Here in the states, they operate via a catalog that you can look through and then call in an order. I would also check eBay or Facebook Marketplace or anything similar. You might have to do some searching but people sell frames there (or old vintage lamps) that you can use!
