A couple of moss embroidery tips if anyone is interested: -wool thread works better because it has more texture and is easier to bulk up. Tapestry wool is quite thick, crewel wool is a but finer for embroidery. -for the turkey stitch (the one where you make a loop and then trim it) you can take a wire brush or even jut the tip of your needle and fray the ends of the cut thread and it will get really fuzzy and soft and gives great texture and contrast to just the knots -generally dont work with pieces of thread longer than you arm, that will help decrease the tangles and getting caught on things. Hope this is helpful 💗 obviously feel free to do whatever you want, there are no rules 😉
The length of thread Rachel was using made me feel so uncomfortable lol. And the tangle of floss! Eek! I might have become too rigid in my embroidery practice over the years.😂
I've also found that with Turkey stitch, if you space the stitches closely together, then trim, fluff, followed by trimming a little more closely, you get a nice velvety look, which is perfect for some kind of moss.
Also varying the number of strands can give a less uniform and more natural look (regular floss is usually 6 strand and personally I split in half to use 3 strands for most of my embroidery)
Rachel's final form is going to be a D&D hag and I'm excited for her to ruin some adventurers day by giving them "gifts" that will slowly ruin their lives until they come back for revenge that they're incapable of dishing out

I really love the fact that rachel is totally honest about not loving the final product, but put it out there anyway. I’m such a perfectionist, especially about creative projects, and I’ve had to learn how to just say “good enough” to get anything done! It’s just really refreshing to see such a talented maker feeling the same way. It takes vulnerability, and it’s really cool!

Same here. I have *at least* a giant storage tub filled with patterns when I used to use them but with time and experience I find I am happier if I drape or make my own. I haaaaaaaatttteeeeee cutting patterns or sorting them if already cut. If I have to reference them, it's usually for one or two pieces. I guess I'm just lazy.
Love that she’s trusting her instincts and growing as an artist. Some times you have to drive the car off the road to get to new territories. It’s scary, you make mistakes but you grow your own lane this way. The only way out is thru.

I started making costumes when I was 12, waaaay back in 1973. Everything was from scrap and cobbled from thrift. There was no cosplay then. Then I danced in a ballet company and learned a little more about costuming . Fast forward to the 90s when my kids discovered video games, animae and cosplay. You thought I died and went to heaven. I had an excuse to make 6 foot dragonfly wings, battle mage/ monk, and superhero outfits. Alas, they were all for kiddos & teenagers. In my 60s now and I see folks making outfits that just make them happy- cuz. Just cuz. This makes my heart sing. Anyone who thinks they can’t make amazing clothing and costume pieces, that’s a lie. When I was around 4-5 years old, after a super rainy summer, the tadpoles had begun to turn into bb frogs. I had handfuls of them. I would sneak them inside and let them free in the house. My parents couldn't figure out where these hundreds of frogs were coming from, and they finally caught me with LITERAL POCKETS FULL of them lol
Like somebody else said: no matter the end result, I'll watch for the comedy. Rachel makes me laugh out loud every time and leaves me with a feeling of happiness for the rest of my day ❤
Oooo. I love it! This would be so cool to revisit during spooky season with some black and darker greens! Like... i think Bog Witch is the ideal aesthetic.
I would love to see a dark Sleeping Beauty concept with this kind of clothing, like if Sleeping Beauty fell asleep for hundreds of years and the castle became overgrown with vines and moss and shrooms and decay and grew into her clothing/body.
Ok so I think this top turned out suuuuper grogeous! It's like you dressed up as a watercolor painting of yourself as a background character from a mindsummer night's dream. I love how the sleeves have a different texture, the whole thing kind of looks like its a patchwork made of different fallen leaves by fairies, and the sleeves are woven from skeleton leaves. Maybe you could sew two extra strips of reinforced fabrics to the back to make it fit you more comfortably but honestly I don't think anyone would notice. And fabric painting the moss was a great idea, it looks super realistic!
I don't know how to word this so that it sounds like the 100% compliment it is, but it is always a huge breath of fresh air to come over to this channel from Bernadette Banner's, because after watching her perfect tiny stitches and exact-to-the-millimeter garments, I'm always like huh maybe I'm not good enough for crafting, and then I arrive here for the Chaos and I am reminded that joy is the most important part of a craft. Now if only my finished products looked as good as Rachel's...
Gah. I really appreciate the mornings where I, too, can sit outside while it’s raining. I usually enjoy reading, or working on some sketch work… watching this while eating breakfast really boosted serotonin and motivation! Always a pleasure! 💚💚💚
i love the almost cinematic progression of this video. the spliced scenery shots, the natural sound, the music, and the *vibes* invoked the perfect mossy feel! it's rare to feel so transported by a fun lighthearted video
Painting over the "moss" was a good idea. I think that bright green is what was throwing it off. Painting it helped to make them more similar in color, but still gives it a slight variation. Bravo! Also, i wish i could sit on your swing and listen to the rain. 😍
Next time you can probably use lace weight boucle yarn, has a texture similar to moss & usually about as thick as embroidery thread. Love your style! Actually helped me get over my shyness.
Even the things you don’t entirely love the final product of, are pretty darn cool! Sometimes the act of creating is more important to our souls than the final result! 💚🐸💚
I love how the creators I watch have decided to go into forest whimsy. Alt Knots, without meaning to, made a moss blanket. PricklyAlpaca covered her mirror with mushrooms. And now Rachel made a moss corset.
@kelceyfirth I'll see if I can find it. It was a RUclips short, they were musing about how the yarn they were using looked like moss when they worked it up.
You’re not going to see this, but when embroidering close to the edge I just clip it into the hoop, and then stitch a loop of thread in the fabric and pull it tight around the edge of the hoop to hold the fabric taught. Basically just send the needle and thread through the fabric once, take it off the needle, and then tie the ends together around the edge of the hoop.
Doing the turkey knot stitch and immediately forgetting how it’s done is so extremely real and relatable for me EDIT: the regretting using multiple colours of floss also extremely relatable
I actually really love the texturing you did with the bodice fabric! It looks more worn and taken over by moss; like that type of really thin, faint most that you see before the moss grows large and fluffy. Plus it adds depth and dimension!
I’m so impressed that you actually embroidered the moss things. When I saw the thumbnail I thought you bought fake moss and glue it on with hot glue. So colour me impressed!
I do think the different base colours under the paint add to it, natural moss patches aren't perfectly uniform in colour either! but it might have looked better if you'd mixed the colours instead of doing seperate patches I think it turned out cute either way :)
I think the bodice is delightfully mosssy! You could shorten the front and add a skirt, then add boning to the back. It has great potential for a theatrical, mossy dress! ❤
Can I just say Rachel IS real life tinker-bell. No one can tell me otherwise this woman should have been born at pixie hollow and they would be blessed to have her💕💕💕
Tip to reduce tangling/leg looping problems: never work with a thread longer than your arm reach, that way there's not enough thread in play to get tangled easily. Working with longer lengths may seem faster, but you add so much de-tangling time! Thank you for being inspiring to this old lady!
I didn't know this was “a thing”, but I did it over the winter. I took over one of my husband’s Army thermal tops, but it was covered in oil stains. So I embroidered little things over every stain. Now I get so many compliments every time I wear it.
Rachael my dear, with all the kindness and love in my heart, PLEASE iron your fabric before tracing and cutting your pieces 😩 I use to do exactly what you do until I worked with a seamstress. It actually makes a huge difference with the fit of the final product I promise 🙌🏼
To easily thread a needle with any string, run the end through a bit of wax! Then you can easily flatten it and slide it through! Plus less random things in your mouth >.> AND if you sometimes just let the needle on the string hang down it will spin around and untangle so less snaggling! This is amazing, (the fact there's like 4865163 French knots is the amazing part holy crap), your videos inspire me!
Rachel, I understand if you don't like it, but I think this is absolutely phenomenal. Incredible work and it looks so natural! I love the piece as is, but if you wanted to address the issues you discussed, perhaps a quick dip in a very watered down green dye to tone the whole piece and bring the sleeves in a bit more? Your toning with the fabric paint worked SO WELL and perhaps an overall tone job would work as well. Green is SO difficult to get different shades that mix well because there are so many different undertones and shades to work with. I do a lot of floral embroidery, and getting complimentary greens for my pieces is the bane of my existence. Also if anything, to help with it looking wonky, you are a master of painting illusions onto cosplay pieces and the like, so I bet you could give it a bit of an illusion of being straight. I know I'm watching this 9 months late, but DAMN girl you really did that.
I know you weren't feeling this one, but I LOVE it. Even before you toned everything together, I was thinking of how pretty it was, and adding the fabric paint only made it better. Also, it's good to know that I'm not the only one whose internet is just GOBLIN MODE (with a side of dragons for me)
As a person who also strives to be able to recreate all the nice expensive things I want but could never afford, you are my inspiration to start and actually finish things~ ❤😂
I'll say it again. Just so glad I got recommended your channel in 2020. Been a wild three years and each project has been so much fun to see. And keeps me inspired to stay creative too. Even if you don't end up thinking your project comes out how you envisioned Rachel I can say it's such a honor to watch each piece. By far loved the mural you did I dreamed of doing that in my room as a kid and my parents didn't want that. Hope it's not as wet and humid in eastern Massachusetts for you as up here in the Greens of Vermont!
I actually really liked the varying shades of green. I thought it looked like different kinds of moss all clumped together. I also think it would look great if you did this on a brown fabric to make it look like moss growing on a fallen tree in the woods! Then again, my ideas are usually kind of sketchy, lolol😂
I’ve been futzing around with embroidery lately as well and my suggestion to achieve what you were going for with the different shades of green is the even more time consuming process of dividing the embroidery thread and mixing different colored strands. I’m still early stage in my learning process but embroidery thread is typically 6-7 strands of thread combined, so if you make your own color blends you can achieve more “natural” blending. Definitely gives your pieces more dimension! Just something to keep in mind if you want to keep playing with it too!
It also helps to not use all the strands. Especially if you're going for a natural look, but in general, 6 strands are pretty rare. You can thread several needles and then work in really small batches so the french knots blend the colours, pointillism style. That way you can use one or two strands to make the knots really small, and you can pull them really tight, that also helps with the realism. It does basically require the use of a needle minder, but unless you want a really specific cute one, that is solved with a couple of magnets.
Rachel! Thank you for your amazing videos! Your reassurances that project results don’t have to be perfect to be worthy of pride and usage have had a profound effect on me. I was putting off altering my bridesmaid dress from a friend’s wedding because I have very little experience, no sewing machine, and zero confidence that I could pull it off. Because of that the dress was just hanging in my closet collecting dust and taking up space. Your videos inspired me to do some research and give it my best shot! Many days and waaay too much hand-sewn chiffon later, the dress is altered and beautiful! Not perfect, but beautiful, and I’m going to wear it in a couple weeks! I’m so happy and proud!!! Thank you for giving me the courage to try my best at something new.
Ahhh this was so soothing and cozy that I drifted off to sleep and when I woke up from my accidental nap, I immediately watched it again. My sleep has been weird lately. I hope you take it as the compliment that is meant. Lovely video as always!!!!
I agree. I like the bodice, but needs some boning at the back so the lacing is more even and supported. I am not too crazy about the sleeves. I thought they would be more like jagged leaves.
11:27 I've never wanted a porch more than I do in this moment right here. Ohmygod that's beautiful. I took the deepest breath I've taken today just watching this.
I actually have a matcha green corset top I got from Hot Topic, and I think I wanna do this with it!! I would just need to buy some fake moss from the craft store and some fabric glue, and I should be good to go!! I can't wait to see how Rachel's turns out, because her creations are always so stunning!! 💜💜💜💜
The absolute urge to tell you to put tension on your thread for the french knot to be tighter (i was literally pinching my phone screen) but you absolutely killed it anyway like always!!🤩🤩💯💯
Yes, I anchor the loop with a thumb to ensure a sturdy knot, and the temptation to use a mile long thread to save time rethreading is waste by untangling issues.
I love Frodo's emo arm. What a dark brooding boy. lol. Your corset turned out so cute I love it. You did an amazing job. So many french knots I couldn't have done it myself.
Know not a single thing about sewing or clothes-making but your videos make you feel like a close friend and I always love watching you on your adventures and gigglin' at your silly jokes. Another treasure in the books! Thank you for making content for us to enjoy so heartily.
Quick Tip: I have found that when hand sewing/embroidery when you first prep your needle & thread if you don't cut your thread no longer than one full arm pull from your center mass you will have less tangles and less hooking onto random stuff/body parts. Hope this helps ☺️
I would love to make something like this when I get the chance. Most of all wanted to say that Rachel seems to be getting more and more beautiful as she does more of what she loves and just has fun. And love seeing more Frodo!!
I so admire you, Rachel! Thank you for showing the process, even when the end result wasn’t exactly what you’d hoped for... the internet is a better place with you in it! 😊💛
This is exactly to my interests. I've been making (i.e sitting in my unfinished project box) a moss covered cape for years now. This video might just give me the inspo to actually finish it. Especially since one of your earlier videos was what gave me the idea in the first place.
That 50s dress! 😍 Your moss top is lovely too! I love the different colors. (And broccoli is bomb, lol) The second "frog" is actually a toad! Toads are generally "warty" and bumpy while frogs are smooth, and the teeny guy was a toadlet or froglet. Suuper cute little dudes! And emo Frodo is so cute. Hopehis hotspot gets better soon!
This video *chef's kiss*! I love your willingness to experiment and try new things, it's really inspiring! (Also I don't know why, but the reveal made me think of Tinkerbell...but like mossy)
I grew up in North Carolina with a twin-bed sized porch swing, and you doing embroidery on the swing in the rain makes me YEARN!! My current porch isn’t deep enough to sit and enjoy the rain as we get spattered
Your outfits in this video were PEAK. 🥳 If you put the floss on the little cards you can get it helps with the tangles just so you know, might help the frustration factor. 🤪
You look like a whimsical fairytale main character as usual and I'm OBSESSED!!! I need to try this now, because this is by far one of my favorite projects of yours!! 💜💜💜💜
I...kinda love & appreciate how you too use random small, heavy, often brass objects as pattern weights. One of these days I will either buy proper set of pattern weights, or make my own, but for now it's random porcelain crab decorative box (?), brass four leaf clover paperweight, fancy wooden pen case for skinny pattern bits, & any moderately heavy book I can lay hands on.
You can easily fix the corset by adding thicker straps and removing the sleeves, and doing more more moss coming down the shoulders. Love you to revisit this if you want to! Awesome idea ❤
The greatest thing you’ll ever learn, is to watch Rachel and be wowed in return! Very cool little project. I loved the concept and the Olivia’s Newton John nostalgia ❤
A couple of moss embroidery tips if anyone is interested:
-wool thread works better because it has more texture and is easier to bulk up. Tapestry wool is quite thick, crewel wool is a but finer for embroidery.
-for the turkey stitch (the one where you make a loop and then trim it) you can take a wire brush or even jut the tip of your needle and fray the ends of the cut thread and it will get really fuzzy and soft and gives great texture and contrast to just the knots
-generally dont work with pieces of thread longer than you arm, that will help decrease the tangles and getting caught on things.

Love all of these tips. I am on an embroidery kick after I learned it quite recently so I'm absorbing them all, thanks!
Also, if you want variation in color, you can combine 2 different colors of threads. So then every stitch has slight variation but is subtle.
To sit on a porch swing surrounded by nature and embroidery in the rain = life goals ❤

Anyone know where to find a similar pattern for her corset cover top? Looking but not finding... SO CUTE, MUST MAKE

Thanks for the excellent yarn suggestion! I’ll have a better vocabulary if I have to ask for help at Joann fabrics!
"Let's get Whimsical" bit. Worth it's weight in gold. Chef's kiss.
The rainy day aesthetic shots are EVERYTHING!
Even the things you don’t entirely love the final product of, are pretty darn cool! Sometimes the act of creating is more important to our souls than the final result! 💚🐸💚
Honestly, the way you re-cycled the gathered waist band to be the sleeves was GENIOUS! 10 out of 10 approve!
I love how the creators I watch have decided to go into forest whimsy. Alt Knots, without meaning to, made a moss blanket. PricklyAlpaca covered her mirror with mushrooms. And now Rachel made a moss corset.
I love alt knots! do you have a link to the moss blanket video?
@kelceyfirth I'll see if I can find it. It was a RUclips short, they were musing about how the yarn they were using looked like moss when they worked it up.
You’re not going to see this, but when embroidering close to the edge I just clip it into the hoop, and then stitch a loop of thread in the fabric and pull it tight around the edge of the hoop to hold the fabric taught. Basically just send the needle and thread through the fabric once, take it off the needle, and then tie the ends together around the edge of the hoop.
Genius!
oh god, this is so helpful! i always end up continuing adjust the fabric over and over
Took me a couple reads for my brain to realize what u meant, but this is fantastic advice!
@@kannahvivien7525 words are hard lol
Doing the turkey knot stitch and immediately forgetting how it’s done is so extremely real and relatable for me
EDIT: the regretting using multiple colours of floss also extremely relatable
I actually really love the texturing you did with the bodice fabric! It looks more worn and taken over by moss; like that type of really thin, faint most that you see before the moss grows large and fluffy. Plus it adds depth and dimension!
I’m so impressed that you actually embroidered the moss things. When I saw the thumbnail I thought you bought fake moss and glue it on with hot glue. So colour me impressed!
I have all the time in the world for emo Frodo. 🖤
It’s funny how critical we are of ourselves. This is amazing girl!!! I love the final results!! Amazing!💚
I do think the different base colours under the paint add to it, natural moss patches aren't perfectly uniform in colour either! but it might have looked better if you'd mixed the colours instead of doing seperate patches
I think it turned out cute either way :)
Love that
It's the fabric version of kintsugi.
I can't believe, I used to throw pieces away because of a little stain or rip. So many cute things, you can still do with them 😢
Rachael my dear, with all the kindness and love in my heart, PLEASE iron your fabric before tracing and cutting your pieces 😩 I use to do exactly what you do until I worked with a seamstress.
Also, it's good to know that I'm not the only one whose internet is just GOBLIN MODE (with a side of dragons for me)
I think you actually did the embroidery fairly quickly. My hands hurt just thinking about all those French knots. Great job!
It’s actually nice to see a “failed” product because you can easily appreciate the right way to have done things ? I love the vids
I absolutely love it! It's so interesting & looks like an adorable forest fairy.
Oh my goodness the little frog is so cute! Painting the bodice helped and it looks like moss, great job Rachel!
I put Rachel on to get to sleep every night and then get to rewatch too. Her voice and choice of music… it’s sooooo relaxing ☺️
Rachel’s bits will always be my favorite. So quick and short but so extra 😂😂
The embroidery looks pretty! I think if you reinforce the back and make some new sleeves it could be very cute!!!!
I agree. I like the bodice, but needs some boning at the back so the lacing is more even and supported. I am not too crazy about the sleeves. I thought they would be more like jagged leaves.
I thought you were going to leave the sleeves long...😊
@@kathleenorourke1541 I thought she would leave them long as well.
This is so cute! It definitely has "i have emerged from the forest after centuries" energy
Loved the whimsical work out at the start, was excellent. Seeing Rachel sit on the veranda on a swing seat in the rain was calming.
Ah another episode on Frolic Fridays. I would love to see an episode called Maksy Mondays!😂
I love it so much. The varied colors with paint over it looks so good! Also thebporch swing in the rain is a total VIBE.
Let's get whimsical, whimsical 🎵🎶 Yes, the outfit was worth it for the bit. 😆 Love the embroidered moss, too! 💚
Especially since one of your earlier videos was what gave me the idea in the first place.
everything comes circling back
That 50s dress! 😍 Your moss top is lovely too! I love the different colors. (And broccoli is bomb, lol)
The second "frog" is actually a toad! Toads are generally "warty" and bumpy while frogs are smooth, and the teeny guy was a toadlet or froglet. Suuper cute little dudes! And emo Frodo is so cute. Hopehis hotspot gets better soon!
Would I be too much to ask for a full "Let's Get Whimsical" music video? Because that genuinely slapped! 😂❤
Right?! It made my entire week! I cackled the moment it started.
It shall forever be seared in my brain, not in a cringe way, but a most excellent way like if I need a pick me up just reference this way...
when my brain sees your embroidered moss it goes DAS MOS, LOVE MOSE, M NATUR, LOVE A FOREST. So, great job, thats a damn fine moss uve made there
This video *chef's kiss*!
You know what, I'm way more of a crochet type of gal. But I really enjoy watching how you put stuff like this together so imma subscribe 😇
I cross stitch as a major hobby and I can confirm french knots can be of the devil when you have to do a lot of them
I got here so fast for this. Yes cool niche corsets!!!
Oh my gawd...I could watch Rachel embroider on her porch swing in the rain for HOURS. So cozy. 😊
This is just so cozy and aesthetic with all the rainy day footage 💗
The mossy corset is gorgeous, the cute frogs are suiting the whole bog witch vibe 💚
Now I can’t get that song out of my head. ❤😂 love whimsicalness (is that a word) 🤷♀️ Also I love how it came out, just add a leafy skirt.
The greatest thing you’ll ever learn, is to watch Rachel and be wowed in return! Very cool little project. I loved the concept and the Olivia’s Newton John nostalgia ❤
