  • In today's Fit Life After 40 talk I have the pleasure of speaking with Ted McDonald (Barefoot Ted), who is an ultra-runner, barefoot runner, primal life coach and entrepreneur based in Santa Barbara, California. Ted has played a major role in defining and popularizing the natural running movement and is also one of the characters featured in the best-selling book, "Born to Run", where the natural endurance running movement first gained some notoriety.
Ted has also turned his passion for encouraging people to be comfortable in their own two feet into business by founding Luna Sandals, a company that produces outdoor adventure, hiking and barefoot running sandals.
Turning 57 in July Ted remains committed to rediscovering primal human capacities and mastering simple techniques for optimizing his personal fitness. His fitness philosophy for the last 20 years has been one of self-experimentation, finding one’s own path and following "what makes YOU come alive".
Ted continues to participate in running events such as the Cooper Canyons Endurance Runs, the Leadville Trail 100 and the Born to Run Ultra Extravaganzas where you will find him trying out his companies latest Luna Sandals.
In our talk Ted shares his personal running journey to discovering running barefoot as a way to run pain free and actually enjoy running. We will talk about his personal barefoot running evolution, how to run barefooted and what he believes are the benefits of running barefoot. We talk about his definition of wellness and how his focus for fitness is on rediscovering primal human capacities.
Ted shares his belief of the importance of taking responsibility for one's fitness and wellness and the importance of cultivating self-awareness through experimentation what will have the best and optimal results for you. We talk about what Ageless Living means to him, his advice for anyone turning 40 about how to view life and his definition of what living a legendary life means to him. He also gives his top three tips or strategies to optimize your health, wellness whilst giving you a longer life as well as what he believes is the secret to longevity.

Its 5:45 am going for a run barefoot. I live in a city. I run in the street against little traffic for a mile till I get to the park. Then I run in the grass then I run back home. By the way Im 60 yrs old. Natural is power.

The book that Barefoot Ted mentioned "Born To Run" by Christopher McDougall, is the best book on running that I've ever read...cheers...

The bad part about the book is that there is nothing else as good as it for you to read after.

That fact that you did it while nose breathing means you're a champ in my book.

I ran a marathon last weekend in 5 fingers. I like having a minimal barrier against rocks, thorns, and glass on the trail but the "barefoot" thing is just more natural to me now.

Modern footwear providing too much support, stiff, cushioned, heel lift, narrow toe box is equivalent to wearing a cast, the foot muscles atrophy. If kids are put into shoes during their first 7 years of life, their foot development is limited. The best solution, go barefoot. The feet adapt to what we expose them to and our bodies were designed to walk barefoot. It takes time, think of it as therapy at first, but the feet will adapt. Thanks for putting this out and inspiring a movement!

I'm turning 57 this year and I have used merrell vapor gloves and pure barefoot. I feel pure barefoot is the best way to cure plantar fasciitis and getting rid of heel spurs. The skin picks up serious information and the tendons, muscles and joints, all benefit and circulation is better. Plus your feet won't get sweaty. It does take practice and I can run barefoot over different asphalt, gravel and dirt trails. Becareful of hot asphalt. Run in the morning or evening.

You just have to be careful barefoot running. I got up to 13 miles, but I stepped on an acorn shell that stopped it. I ended up with a fibroma that had to be surgically removed. I now use minimalist, zero-drop shoes that give me protections from various road/trail debris.

I see no reason why you can’t be competitive as a barefoot runner. I am determined to prove that. I was never winning races before, but I am dead set on checking off that box before I die. Would love to come back with real evidence (ie a new personal best) to prove to myself and others that I’m not just crazy. I think the best way to change peoples minds is to let the results speak for themselves.

@@zachearth2627 Lol I have kinda plateaued in times over this 2nd year since that comment, but all in the name of progress and still fired up. Got 1st in a parkrun 5k on January 1st. Only 49 runners and self proclaimed as not a “race”, but was proud of the win and it was a weird feeling approaching the finish line knowing I was the first person for the first time in my decade plus of running and like 1000 5ks. Only ran 21:06 and got lucky considering how often it’s like 17 min to win. Still 2+ minutes from where I used to be in shoes, but oh so close to breaking 20 again for so long and just need to be patient.

Too high an arch causes sever muscle spasms for me. I can wear Teva Tirras which have a lower arch support which seem more comfortable then the OLUKAI Ohana tongs. I ordered some Lunas to see how they feel. I haven’t received them yet so I will see.

I have skipped rope because I am so bad at running. I wonder do those years of skipping mean my form might be better if I started running again and might be more of a bare foot / toe strike style.

    • @davidcharlesworth6831

I bet you are ahead of the game! Start running. Start slow. Just little bits, slower than you think. Start on concrete, not on grass. Grass will allow you to have bad form. Concrete will punish hard landings. Once you can do short runs and you feel great. Slowly increase it! I started June 23rd. Just did my first 25k trail run. And now I run 5k a day lots of days! Just since this past summer. Vibram 5 fingers are my favourite. But I started with $27 water shoes from amazon.
