Dude, you're the best. I've watched all the fishing RUclipsrs for a while now and I think you're hands down the best. More teaching and less ego. Keep up the good instruction! I've learned a boat load from u!
I've always wanted to go fishing with a professional bass angler and since I don't have that option I've been watching your videos for years. I've learned from them and I just wanted to thank you for the level of detail in each of your videos. As the others have said I did not understand rod action and power but now I have a better understanding of which rod to fish with each lure. Which I believe will mean more hook sets and better days on the water!
Hey bud, gotta say, as far as "teaching" you're definitely the best on RUclips. Alot of guys just give opinions.....you seem to base your teachings from FACT, rather than opinion.
Im just waiting on the day to go fishing with you! Your videos have taught me more about fishing then probably any other youtuber out there. Keep up the hard work with your channel and i will thank you from not only myself but all of your followers .Thank you for sharing and helping the fishermen around the world to become better and strive to learn more ways of catching fish.
Thank You! I have a youth fishing team in Columbia County. I've just asked my young team to follow your subscriptions. You have a very easy to understand method. My middle school aged team members will totally understand after listening to your explanations. Thank you!
Thank you Rosie. I guess the reason I teach the way I do is because I've been working with youth for most of my life. They are the demographic that I focus on the most. What state are you in? The reason I ask is because I live in Columbia County, GA. :)
Once again Gene, you did a great job for us video junkies. I've read the article that you mentioned and I seem to get more from someone explaining live (or video) than I do from reading. I sure look forward to the bait/lure reviews. I have definitely improved due to your videos, because I catch more fish with your tips and techniques. My 7 year old son and I watch these videos together and I see him trying to apply what he can, and he does catch a few. The only problem I have now is that he wants to use the bait casters, so I give mine knowing full well I'm about to get back a reel with a horrible birdnest in it.
LOL! that's awesome. I always keep my videos clean so a child can sit on dad's lap and watch with him. I have three boys and a girl and it's nice not worrying about what they will see while sitting on my lap when I watch videos.
I'm trying to pick a rod for my jerkbait lures and this video has helped me understand what does fast, slow, moderate tip means. It even shows the different bends of the rod according to its descriptions. The video is very well made and made it very understandable for new guys like myself. I've only used ugly sticks since I'm a newbie. Great video and thanks!
Hey Gene, great description on power and action of a rod. Helped me buy my new rod (Ducket Ghost 7'6") and reel ( Abu Garcia Orro SX) and gave me tips on how to better utilize my current setup. Many thanks! Please keep the videos coming. You did a video on bank fishing a while back and if you get the chance, so please give some more tips for those of us who don't yet own a boat.
Anyone getting into bass fishing, even those of us who fish a lot, should watch this video! I can't stress enough how important it is to have the correct rod for the right line and lure! You'll catch so many more fish (at least not lose many fish) if you're using the correct power/action rod to line strength! Thanks Gene!
Man i wish i seen this vid when i first started. Woulda saved me tons of research and time. And regrets. Been watching u alot lately. Ive never seen any channel that teaches this much. Thanks man
Chai tern I learned after that and figured it out then instead of exchanging the casting rod for a spinning rod, I got a bait cast reel and a spinning rod. Full send or no send.
Hey man! Thanks for all the info your channel has provided. It's been great especially since I'm "new" to fishing. The one thing I appreciate from all you youtubers is your ability to pass on information that's non bias. Cheers Gene
Gene where you been man? Glad your back. I'm a kayak fisherman and your videos have improved my knowledge and ability on a consistent basis. thank you for what you do!
I picked up a Cub Scout Pack and have been getting things rolling. I had to put a bunch of thing on hold for a while. I think I'm ready to get things going again.
I know how you feel. . I'm a teacher at a junior high and am also the hooked on fishing not on drugs sponsor. . we are learning fly casting right now SCARY!!
thanks man i learned more about fishing rods in 10 mins than i have my whole life. the rod i have i hate it and you helped me realize why i hate it. i need the opposite of what i have for the style of fishing i like to do.
Fluke buddy idk why you are stuck right at under 300k Subs! You should have a million at the least! I have been watching you for years and you are one of the best fishing RUclipsrs that there is in my opinion. Heck I’m starting up my own “Fishing/Hunting/Outdoors” RUclips channel. I’m in the process of getting it up and going and I’m flipping out every time I get that notification saying I have a new sub! My Goal is to hit 100 subs this year. I would be ecstatic lol! But you my friend have worked and busted your tail and have earned each and everyone of your subs! I can’t wait to see the day you hit a Million!! 👍🏻👍🏻
What do I like the most about your video's? You're not screwing around trying to be Joe Cool. Your style is informative, straight forward, and most of all you are teaching. THANK YOU......
What’s your thoughts on a 7.6 medium light extra fast rod? Thank you so much for taking the time to do all these videos. I watch so many RUclipsrs but you are by far the best teacher and I learn the most from you.
Wow just wow you are probably the best fishing RUclipsr I’ve ever watched that explained the rod action and power this was so helpful most fishing youtubers and biased and like specific rod and reel company’s but I think it’s a good idea to try different rod companies are better than others on specific rod actions or powers great info this really answers my questions
Thank you for the explanation. I haven a casual angler since I was a child and never knew this stuff. Great to understand now that I'm getting deeper into fishing
Hello I love fishing🎣 and i consider myself a beginner I just bought my first shaksper medium action tiger🐅 spinning combo for $25 and I also bought a shaksper durango 6ft medium action baitcaster rod $10 and also I bought a abugarcia baitcaster reel I was looking for a review of my shaksper durango medium action baitcaster rod and I came across your i can't wait to go fishing🎣 with my fishing rods 👍💯
Thanks for the Video! Cleared up a lot of questions! I remember last summer putting together a list for my rod and reel set up and getting slightly frustrated with what I need for what. Cant wait to see the Next video!
what about matching the right reels with the different types of power and action rods? this is the question that I ask myself whenever I get a new setup. granted I'm still fairly new. I only have two bait casters and one spinning setup for now.
+Kevin Vue Matching the reel isn't as important. It has more to do with personal preference with a few basic rules. I'll put a video together about it.
Would a medium power fast action rod be more sensitive than a medium heavy power fast action rod? Basically I just want to know if there is a point in getting a medium rod if medium heavy is just as sensitive and less likely to break
I would love to see a video explaining reels.... recovery rates-max drag-ball bearings... and such. This would really help me understand things a little more and i sure it would help other as well !!!!
For shaky heads/Texas rigged soft plastics, would a 7' heavy, fast action work? It'd be sensitive since its fast action. My main concern is how big a role the power of the rod comes into play. I'm not casting heavy Texas rigs either. I'm also thinking about braid for more sensitivity. Great video brother. Best one I've seen
I like fishing breaking stripers with 3" to 4" top water hard plastic lures like spooks and poppers. If I try to get my boat too close, the fish go deep. What power and action rods will get me the most distance on a cast with that type of lure so I can keep some distance from the breaking fish?
I just purchased a Abu 7' Veritas MF action bait caster. My question is...I love to use top water baits and small frog lures. Did I purchase the correct rod for this? I am also wanting to get more into lipless crank baits or any crank bait for that matter. Which Abu rod (size/action) would I need for that?
In the stores, I have been seeing, two of the same type rod, but both have different diameters. For example...I seen a medium heavy rod with a thin diameter and right next to it was another rod that was medium heavy with a thick diameter. What is the purpose of the thicker rod? The only thing I can think of is bigger fish. Is there any other purpose that I am missing?
+Gabriel Avalos Maybe different type of rod blanks such as Carbon vs Fiberglass; Solid vs Hollow. Carbon/Fiberglass itself has many different properties (Modulus 24T, 30T, 40T etc)
So what do i use for cut and live baits? I broke a Shimano Sojourn Medium power fast action on a Piranha. Rod was high sticking though, cause i might been lacking power.
I will. The ice storm we had this week was pretty bad. I've been taking my boys around town and helping neighbors clean up the mess. I'm heading to the Bassmaster Classic Expo this coming weekend so that should get me fired up again. Thanks for watching.
Hey so what do you think is a good hard jerkbait rod power and action for say the rick clunn jerkbait and if you would what about rod power and action for square bill crankbaits thanks
For my next rod i was going to try a duckett and I was wondering when jig fishing whats the difference between the 7' 3 and the 7' 6; what does the add 3 inches do when there both MH
I'm fishing in small creeks and rivers, throwing into brush , up in between grass patches, near bluff faces, etc. Bass, perch (that's what we call them), occasionally others. I'm using creatures and worms, some jig. I'm accustomed to spinner reels and not looking to change right now. I often walk through the woods. I'm looking to do a set up for these conditions. Any input from fellow adventurers will be appreciated. Many thanks.
I use the 7ft and 6'9 ducket crankbait rods on trilene xl smooth casting line. Love the rods but can't get any great casting distance. Looking to switch to something that's more parabolic. Any suggestions? I want to be able to launch em out there even the lighter lures.
Hey , i wanna buy a new fishing rod . I wanted to buy a heavy action rod but the shop only has hollow rods that are heavy action. The solid rods they have are all light to medium action rods . Should i buy a hollow cored heavy action rod ? Will the break easily?
Hi Gene, Great vid. This is so going to help me out this weekend while I'm stripper fishing. I have a totally new rig I was going to try and after watching your vid, adjustments will need to be made. Thanks for the info!!!
I Catfish a lot and if I can break a Cyrcle Hook by setting it I better get diff hooks . I know your talking Bass here but with Catfishing MED/HEAVY fast action is all you need unless your in to some huge Flatheads in some realy thick cover then Id grab Heavy action with x fast tip. Nice video man keep them coming .
I understand the specs on the side of the rod, but what if you're using braided line? I am using 40lb power pro which is 10lb diam. on a medium rod. Should i follow the specs by the diam. or the lb?
Thanks Flukemaster Jensen. I never really knew the difference between all the powers and speed ect. but had an idea. It make more sense now. I read up a little bit earlier on a web site. Hopefully it helps me choose and catch fish.
What setup would you reccomend for mainly crank baits and spinner baits for a beginner? I want to start using bait casters and there's numerous setups that are making my head spin.
Thank you very muchfor your information. it had been very useful... Do you know if there is a fishing rod that may be used for bait casting and spinning reels?. is not because i want to safe money purchasing only one rod ... its to difficult to carry two fishing polls than carry two diffetent reels.
I always seem to get rods that only tell me one not both. All my rods give line size, lure weight, the length of the rod and then medium. None say for example, medium fast action. Just medium. So I take it all their telling me is the power?
Would there be any problems with using braid with the new Duckett ghost Rod med heavy fast action? I saw somewhere on a forum that the braid would grove the guides and tear them up.
I am a shore fisherman and I just purchased a 6'7" med heavy fast action 13 fishing black omen 2. I am going to be using it for squarebills, crankbaits, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, jigging, some Texas rig, and frogging. I know I like the 13 fishing brand but I do not know if I want a different power and action or not. I can still exchange it for another rod. What would you recommend for that type of fishing I do with it.
+Nathan Pizzini you need to match the lyre rating on the rod to what you are using. I have 2 med heavy rods. one is rated for 1/4 which I use for plastics. the other is rated for 3/8 ounce which I use for crankbait fishing
Do you think a Micro magic 7ft medium power fast action can handle a 5/8oz jerkbait. I dont want the rod to flex alot as if it were a noodle. Any other recommendations?
Yea im glad i watched this, you are fantastic in explaining things. Im not new to fishing but im going to be buying my fist Baitcaster rod and reel here soon and i do need some advice. I have a Johnny Morris Carbonlite spinning 6'6 6-17lb line Med Hvy Fast action rod with the Stradic C3000 from Shimano. I love this setup for spinning but i want to get into baitcasting and being new to it what would you recommend starting out with rod and reel. I love top water and spinner baits, used to do alot of worming texas rigs when i was young but used a spinning rod. I want great quality but don't want to break the bank. Thanks a ton and hope to hear from you soon. Great vids BTW i watch almost every one
You would want to use the same diameter line or less. For example 12lb mono you would use a braid with the same diameter or lower. I have 10lb power pro on my 8lb spinning setup
Go Dawgs! I'm sorry to be so dense, but most rods I see will say on them - light, medium, or heavy action. I don't ever see anything on there about power. I am trying to learn how to use circle hooks for catfishing. The article I read recommends a moderate fast action rod. I don't recall seeing a rod that says fast action on it? I'm so confused!
The line weight refer to mono or braid?? Or is both?? That capaacity is the force the rod is made for??? Or just is about the line diameter for casting effects??
what length rod would you recommend for flippin and pitchin. also i am getting into crankbaiting more and i curently use a 7ft medium heavy rod but when i retrieve the whole tip of the rod and all the way down vibrates hard is this normal or do i need to upgrade my cranking gear. thank you
NCBASSMASTER25 7'3 or 7'6". For cranking the best rod is a Med Moderate action rod. You need some give for better casts and to keep you from loosing fish.
I have set up a saint Croix 7'11" heavy power med fast with an Okuma komodo 364 6.4.1 what would you through on this set up. I also set up a Lews 7.1.1 on a Saint Croix 7'1" Medium power Fast action same question on what you would through on it? Thanks for your time!
Please help: If I am using a crank bait I need to use a moderate action rod. If I am using Texas rig, Carolina rig etc I need to use fast action rod. What power should I get for these two setups? Medium, medium heavy or heavy?????
For the recommended line weight's on the rod, if I'm using braid do I consider the actual braid weight, or the equivalent mono size. So is the lb test that the rod recommends based on line diameter, or is it based on the force of the line?
+Flukemaster thanks very much for the reply. I know you still live in the Georgia area and was wondering if you've ever fished at panic pond in Seminole county. It's stocked with 10+ pounders and your hobie kayak would be perfect for it. Thanks
SO... With a moderate action rod you would use a heavier type of bait right? I have an Abu Garcia black Max Baitcaster. Its pretty stiff. So say its a fast action rod. Do i use lighter weights to ensure it wouldnt effect its sensibility.?
I have, for the past year or so, become interested in making my own jigs. I will be purchasing the equipment before summer roles around up here, and I plan to make my jigs on site, to suit the conditions I will be fishing in. What conditions, of the body of water I am fishing, should I consider while developing a Jig?
What I used to do is put out crawfish traps around the lake. I had six of them. I'd check them every other day and take pictures of the crowfish that I caught. Then I'd go home and make jigs that matched those colors. It didn't take long to figure out what the predominant colors were and I stuck with them.
Wat would you recommend for throwing a 1/2oz scrounger head with a 7inch Zoom fluke?? I bought a cheap abu vigilant rod rated 1/4-1oz lure paired with a lews tournament mg. I want my money back for that rod cuz I cant cast far with it, or its just me n my casting skills.
ohh so i shouldnt set the brakes on max?? which duckett would you recommend for an all around casting rod if you had to choose one (or if there is one), cuz im really diggin it???? I was looking at the ghost series but might go higher.
Very nice video now I fish from a kayak "all trolling" for trout and kokanee mostly top line. I like a shorter pole than say someone trolling from a boat 6ft is ideal for me 6.6 is max what would you suggest? I have right now just a stupid ole 6ft med. ugly stick and I dont think its made for what I am doing with it remember its in a kayak. Thanks

This is a very well thought out description for us newer anglers. Thanks for the effort.

Bass often like to hide behind the seat cushions on your sofa - on warm days they are found underneath the couch where they feed on crumbs
So that's what that smell has been.

Lol oh man after watching this i realized i just ordered me a broomstick. A heavy extra fast action.
Chai tern I bought a casting rod for my spinning reel 😂
@@NendoCrescendo lmfao! Damn. Thats a new way of mixing 😅🤣
Chai tern Bruh, I referred to the trigger as my Thumb hook 😂😂😂

Thank you for the explanation. I haven a casual angler since I was a child and never knew this stuff. Great to understand now that I'm getting deeper into fishing
I never considered action equating to a sensitivity of a rod. Very helpful! Thanks for all you do! Wish I'd have seen this years ago lol.

nice breakdown on how rods are measured.
great video. very in depth explaining for some of us who are newer into the game.
Great video. New to bass fishing and I am being educated. Love your videos. This topic has always been confusing until now. Go Dawgs!!!
Would a medium power fast action rod be more sensitive than a medium heavy power fast action rod?
Basically I just want to know if there is a point in getting a medium rod if medium heavy is just as sensitive and less likely to break
Omar They should be close to the same
okay, thanks Gene!

I would love to see a video explaining reels.... recovery rates-max drag-ball bearings... and such. This would really help me understand things a little more and i sure it would help other as well !!!!
Very good idea mike. I'll write that one on the list.
Thank you for shedding some light on the subject
Trippyvision You're Welcome
Finally someone explains what I actually WANTED to know 👍
For shaky heads/Texas rigged soft plastics, would a 7' heavy, fast action work?
It should be a great rod for treble hooked topwater baits and for lipless cranks but as for frogs it just depends on what type.
Excellent explanation about action and power. Great vid!
No fancy edits but GREAT content. Thanks!
Hey I was wondering would u reccomend a duckett Silverado 7'6" medium parabolic action for crankbaiting
In the stores, I have been seeing, two of the same type rod, but both have different diameters. For example...I seen a medium heavy rod with a thin diameter and right next to it was another rod that was medium heavy with a thick diameter. What is the purpose of the thicker rod? what would you suggest for catfishing.
Hey so what do you think is a good hard jerkbait rod power and action for say the rick clunn jerkbait and if you would what about rod power and action for square bill crankbaits thanks
Wow! I can't believe I'd never seen this video before, it's fantastic!
For my next rod i was going to try a duckett and I was wondering when jig fishing whats the difference between the 7' 3 and the 7' 6; what does the add 3 inches do when there both MH
The added three inches gets you longer pitches and more leverage. I prefer the 7'3" though.
I'm getting a blackout rod and would a 7'4" heavy, extra fast be good for frogging? if not, what black out rod would you suggest?
+Kayak Evan You don't need the fast action for frogging, but if you're going to use it for walker style baits as well it's perfect.
I've seen ultra light 4' rods, what would they be used for, they only rec 4-6 oz line.
Bluegill and other small forage fish
Dose the reel that you have on the pole affect the power or the feel of the pole? Thanks for summing up how the science of the fishing pole works.
The only thing that it affects is the weight which can affects the sensitivity and balance of the rod but the difference is minimal.
What action and power can help me to cast further ?
Great video.....can i use a medium fast action spinning rod for silicon lures or i will need faster action;
Thank you for the free info..My 10 yr old son and I are beginners..and this video helped 🍺🥃
Thanks for this video. I was given two hodgepodge rod and reels. Rhino glowtip 6'6 mediums and a Shakespeare 4000 spinning reel.
I use the 7ft and 6'9 ducket crankbait rods on trilene xl smooth casting line. Love the rods but can't get any great casting distance. Looking to switch to something that's more parabolic. Any suggestions? I want to be able to launch em out there even the lighter lures.
texazsouth I can cast my cranks a mile with those rods. You might need to think about a better reel or get your cleaned and re-oiled.
Thanks man.
Should i follow the specs by the diam. or the lb?
Braid is something totally different. I'll cover that in the second video.
I like fishing topwater bait, crankbait and jerkbait. Is it necessary to buy a medium action rod? Thank you.
wei guo It's never necessary to buy the exact rod that is designed for the technique but it does help.
thank you
Thanks Flukemaster Jensen. I never really knew the difference between all the powers and speed ect. but had an idea. It make more sense now. I read up a little bit earlier on a web site. Hopefully it helps me choose and catch fish.
Hello man..
Fast and extra fast action, what lure suitable for it?
My rod is ultralight power, action fast, rating line 2-5lb..
What setup would you reccomend for mainly crank baits and spinner baits for a beginner? I want to start using bait casters and there's numerous setups that are making my head spin.
A 7 foot Medium Moderate Rod would be a good start for cranks and spinnerbaits up to 3/8oz.
I don't see a problem with it. Haters are always going to be the first ones to spread bad rumors about a product.
+Flukemaster please get back to me as soon as possible
+Nathan Pizzini you need to match the lyre rating on the rod to what you are using. I have 2 med heavy rods. one is rated for 1/4 which I use for plastics. the other is rated for 3/8 ounce which I use for crankbait fishing
Do you think a Micro magic 7ft medium power fast action can handle a 5/8oz jerkbait. I dont want the rod to flex alot as if it were a noodle. Any other recommendations?
peter chao Yes. That would be perfect for what you want to do.
Thanks. I have the wrong lures on a few of my rods. Now I know. Great info. Glad you did this one. Also looking forward to the lure reviews.
Hey gene i have a question for Texas Riggs do use a regular or a sweep hook set for Texas rigs
daniel gomes Regular over the shoulder hookset
Ok thnx
So say I have a 7ft medium heavy rod and it says 12-20 pound test. Does that apply for braid too?
No
You would want to use the same diameter line or less.
I'm so confused!
what action and power would you recommend for flipping and pitching
Heavy Mod
Flukemaster thank you
The line weight refer to mono or braid?? Or is both?? That capaacity is the force the rod is made for??? Or just is about the line diameter for casting effects??
I have a 7' extra fast medium power rod lure wt. 1/4- 5/8oz what would be the best application for this rod?
+BluntzBlazing420 spinnerbait, lipless, buzzbait, larger squarebills, topwater spooks, 1/4oz shakyheads, finesse jigs.
+Flukemaster thanks for the reply
I just purchased a 7ft mh mirco guide duckett ghost rod. Is the tip supposed to be a Lil soft? It doesn't say anything xfast or fast action.
Kao Saephan Yes. Their tips are a little softer than most other rods.
Oh okay first time using it. So I just wanna make sure since you been using the duckett for a long time. Thanks for responding.
Hey Gene what kind of action is a Regular...ive seen Moderate, Moderate Fast, Fast and Extra Fast...so where does a Regular Action fit in...
+Brandon Amador - I would think moderate.
There isn't a regular.
Thats what i thought but some companies use that reference like megabass...
+Brandon Amador it's moderate megabass just uses different terms
what length rod would you recommend for flippin and pitchin. also i am getting into crankbaiting more and i curently use a 7ft medium heavy rod but when i retrieve the whole tip of the rod and all the way down vibrates hard is this normal or do i need to upgrade my cranking gear. thank you
NCBASSMASTER25 7'3 or 7'6". For cranking the best rod is a Med Moderate action rod. You need some give for better casts and to keep you from loosing fish.
thanks for getting back to me so fast.
Please help:
If I am using a crank bait I need to use a moderate action rod.
If I am using Texas rig, Carolina rig etc I need to use fast action rod.
What power should I get for these two setups? Medium, medium heavy or heavy?????
Thanks for the video but what's a good drop shot senko rod 100 for the rod100 for the reel
Duckett Ghost Rod but I'm not sure about the reel. My spinning reels are 8 years old and they aren't made anymore.
In what 7' M fast
Thanks for all the help I need it lol
For the recommended line weight's on the rod, if I'm using braid do I consider the actual braid weight, or the equivalent mono size. So is the lb test that the rod recommends based on line diameter, or is it based on the force of the line?
Braid is a totally different ball of wax. I'll cover it in my next video.
What would you recommend for Texas rigs, wacky rigs and shaky heads
+dacula boy Wacky rigs and shakyheads would be a Med Light power Spinning rod and Texas rigs a Med Hvy Baitcaster.
+Flukemaster thanks very much for the reply. I know you still live in the Georgia area and was wondering if you've ever fished at panic pond in Seminole county. It's stocked with 10+ pounders and your hobie kayak would be perfect for it. Thanks
+dacula boy No but if you're inviting me then I'm in.
+Flukemaster haha alright
I was actually thinking along lines similar to that, I will definitely do that now. Thank you very much for the help!
How do you know that action and weight rating on the Duckett rods?
Their website says what weight lure it's rated for but doesn't mention the line weight.
It sounds like you have your reel set wrong. I have a video that shows how to set up your reel. Have you seen it?
ohh so i shouldnt set the brakes on max?? which duckett would you recommend for an all around casting rod if you had to choose one (or if there is one), cuz im really diggin it???? I was looking at the ghost series but might go higher.
Thanks man ! Really appreciate the video ive got this big ol salmon rod and I wanted some like that but smaller for the rivers around my place !!
Thanks
So when I'm buying a new rod what's the significance of the split grip and a regular grip?
It's just personal preference. It's does lighten up the rod a lot.
