    I purchased the 418 tool holder on Amazon, got my oiler can from Harbor Freight, and the baby oil and petroleum jelly from the dollar store. Couldn't be happier with the results. Went to the lumber yard and saw another CLC holster that my Gerber multi tool fits perfectly in. It was cheaper the the 418. Thanks again for your help.

    Really enjoyed this video and great tip on preserving leather. Will use it on my happier loop. I loved seeing the squirrels in the background at the beginning. The animals in the garden become friends if you feed and protect them and come at the same time of day to the back door looking for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +2

      Hello Tony! As you know I live (for now) in the city, when I was a kid all the women would throw out bread and seed for the animals... Then by the 90's those women were starting to pass and the newer generation were and are oblivious to their surroundings! When my grandmother passed I took over as caretaker for all the creatures of the block... I go thru over 100 lbs of seed every month!!! You can sit on my porch at any time and see a wealth of wildlife eating and drinking and singing... It is my greatest joy! The fact that you focused in on that says a lot about you Tony... That's why, although we have never met I consider you my friend!!! 😃👍

    Good suggestion. I use neats foot oil. No other reason than that's what my brother put on his baseball glove when I was a kid and we kept the can. I used it during Midget and Little League right on through slow pitch softball before I finally got too stove up to do the running. The can is long gone now so next time I need to dress a tool pouch I will try your mix.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +2

      Hello Mr. Sneelock!!!! Neatsfoot oil is a superior oil for leather also Mink oil and saddle soap... I literally have a milk crate full of leather treatments that I have used over the years of teaching scouts leatherwork, I came up with this mix a few years back and it is fantastic for a multitude of applications like tool protection and you don't have to worry about toxic side effects! it's cheap and easily made and you can oil your tools and your boots with the same mix! lol! Thanks very much!!!!!

    Great result. After a lifetime as a mechanic (28 on aircraft) I am now allergic to all hydrocarbons. My skin peels even with your mixture making it impossible to find lotions to help. I say all this to recommend wearing gloves!

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +2

      Hello upside downdog! You should see “My obligatory safety video”. You are so right!!! Many chemicals have a level that once you are exposed to a certain amount you become highly allergic! Epoxies are known for that!!! I have to say that most people will never suffer ill effects from Vaseline or mineral oil...
      (Other then maybe silky soft hands). Lol. Thanks very much!!! 😃👍

    Handy pouch! An old time leather craftsman said never to use any oil on leather. Only a conditioner. I use Lexol. Amazing stuff!

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +2

      Hello Dominic! At one time I was big into leatherwork, I used to teach it to the scouts and made hundreds of sheaths, pouches, holsters and belts! I literally have a milk crate full of leather care products including Lexol, saddle soap, mink oil, neatsfoot oil, snow-proof... And the one thing I can tell you is that if you ask five leatherworkers what is the best leather treatment you will get five different answers! Lol. As you know leather treatment is costly and depending on what you are doing with the item will determine the best treatment. As kids we would buy a new baseball glove and you would buy a bottle of glove oil and work the glove for a couple weeks until it was broken in! Oil will soften the leather and that might not be good for your application so they make creams and waxed to maintain stiffness! I can tell you that for the money you can't beat this 50/50 mix and it is has 100 other uses! I hope you give it a try! Thanks!!!

    • @Dominic.Minischetti
      @Dominic.Minischetti 6 лет назад +1

      ScoutCrafter yes for sure, all depends on what the end use is! I mostly make holsters, knife sheaths and magazine holders so I don’t want them to get soft!

    Happy fathers day to you sir . Great tip as per thank you, I bought a Kershaws ebony & brass folding hunting knife off snap on back in 1975 and the guy Said to coat the leather holster in liquid shoe polish to protect it . Make it waterproof and keeps uv off it it works carried for years until they made it illegal to carry knifes in the uk and it's still as good to day .anything leather since then I treat the same way . Just another tip don't know if it helps .👍

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад

      Hello David! Shoe polish is always a great protector of leather! This 50/50 mix is just a quick way you can mix something up at home cheap and it will help soften and protect the leather... I know how you feel about the knife ban in the UK, it's a good thing they made it illegal because now the terrorists won't carry knives!!! 🤔. Don't get me started! Lol. Thanks very much!!!

    Obenaufs is awesome for leather. Leather honey too. I've found that Obenaufs will turn plastic feeling leather into the softest supple leather. You've got to be careful though, one too many applications and your leather will be sticky for quite some time. I may do a video on my leather treatment sometimes. Also, I believe you may have your leather sides backwards, I believe the smooth side is outside and rough side is flesh side.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +4

      Hello Metal Butcher!!! I have a box full of leather treatments in my attic leather shop! I also have about three cows worth of leather! lol I used to really enjoy leatherwork but it does take time... You are so right Obenaufs, leather Honey, neatsfoot Oil, Mink oil, Snow-proof, saddle soap... They are all good in there own way but I have to tell you that this stupid concoction of 50/50 Mineral oil/ petroleum jelly is in most people's homes already, it's cheap and works! Plus it works great on tools to preserve them! Not to mention, no smell and it leaves your hands looking great! lol I love that stuff! I did a video titled "Home brew lubricants" where I made a few really good shop lubes! And you are right! I meant to say that the rough side is the flesh side but I didn't want to say "flesh" so I said outside of the cow- like if you slapped that piece of leather back on the cow! lol The funny thing is when you buy 1/2 a side of leather like I do you get all type of markings on the smooth side like where the cow bumped into barbed wire or even brand marks! That leather treatment video would be a great idea! Thanks very much!!!

      Obenaufs is the BEST!. I use it on some of my boots but first used it on the leatherwork I make for the Birds of Prey (Eagles, owls, hawks etc.) that I work with. I've made mixes with beeswax and lanolin that had to be melted. (WHAT a literal pain) and lots of other commercial preparations and I'll never go back!

    Great idea! Does the mineral oil dissolve the petroleum jelly enough to mix & pump?

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +3

      Hello David, I did a video called Home brew lubricants where you mix different lubes (i.e. Grease/oil) to get the best of both worlds... I did it in an old pot in a electric plate... Basically you heat up the Vaseline slowly until it becomes liquid then add the mineral oil and stir while cooling... Once it's mixed it stays mixed. Now Ideally you want it to be able to flow yet have some viscosity to it... It works fantastic!!! Thanks!

    Neetsfoot oil also works great on leather.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад

      Hello Karl! Neatsfoot oil is awesome for leather as well as Mink oil! I have a box of leather oils and conditioners that are better then this concoction but I have always had good luck with this mix and it's available in most people's homes. The funny thing is 100 years ago people would use all sorts of stuff to preserve their leather as it dried out, everything from lard to motor oil! lol Thanks very much!!!!!!
