Very nice incorporation John. As a workman and a hunter I have carried a variety of tools, knives, etc. The Sheath/Holster is a truly vital assist to the life of the Tool, Knife or what have you. As a youngster I learned to value leather from being a Shineboy at a barbers shop. I learned how to use many different leather products. I love to work with leather.
Hello Locomotive 282! I used to be a Scoutmaster for over twenty years, I really used to push "hobbies" for the scouts and brought down different things every week to get them interested in anything! I have some crazy stuff but definitely interesting! Lol Thanks so much!!!!
The gas pliers differ from those in the UK as ours have a screwdriver at the end of one handle and a reamer on the end of the other. Yours came out beautifully. The Sedgwick leathercare balm comes from Walsall in the black country north of Birmingham which specialized in leather, bridles and saddles from the 18th century. I think Sedgwick dates from around 1900 and was a family firm until very recently. As always, watching a Scoutcrafter video is one of the highlights of my day.
Hello Tony! Thankyou for the info on the Sedgwick Company!!! There are a few ways to seal the leather but lots of them (like acrylic) are a coating... I have always liked a finish that absorbs into the leather and seals it that way... Thanks again Tony!!! 😃👍
Hi Tony I've got a few old gas man's pliers made by eclipse and elliot lucus and I'm born and bred in Walsall (Palfrey ) just nice to hear about walsalls manufacturing industry.
Thanks for sharing those beautiful pliers. I like your attic, seems like a nice workshop, even the missing person seems to like it lol. Thank you for another great video
That was Hoffa in the attic, wasn't it!!😎 Forget that Giants Stadium business! LOL! Anyway.... Anothet GREAT Video!! You gave me the incentive to renovate a bunch of antique augers and bits! I used some of your tricks combined with some of my own and the rusty relics look like new! Thank You for all the free education!! I'm looking forward to the next one!
Hello Bill!!! This is such a great hobby!!! I'm so glad you are enjoying preserving history while having a great time!!! I really appreciate your constant positive input!!! Thanks so much!!!!!
Thanks for sharing your fun. As mentioned on a few of your other posts, I really enjoy seeing these and learning from you. I'm sure you'll laugh. I've gone through and cleaned up and organized my own modest set of tools. Ha! Your inspiration and appreciation for tools is infectious and has really made me rethink how amazing hand tools truly are. ...wanted to mention that I love seeing your "over-the-top" restorations. Come on, how cool, huh? ...but also really enjoy the tips you've shared for alternative ways to clean up tools to make them serviceable, assuming someone has limited or no access to power tools. Maybe you might consider doing a dedicated video that focuses specifically on this? ...but then, I guess you have covered this already; i.e., steel wool, Scotch pads, sand paper, wire brushes, penetrating fluids, lubricating oils, Shellac, elbow grease, etc. Anyway, thank you again. I'm really enjoying seeing and learning from what you have going on.
Hello Daniel! That is so great!!! This awesome hobby can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone without special tools!!! My buddy's father was a master machinist and knew how to use every machine going but when he was home my friend said his Dad could make ANYTHING with just a drill press and a file!!! When I was a kid I had a hand drill and a wire brush and buffer that you could use on the drill, worked great!!! There are so many of us on this channel doing restorations now! I have retired gentlemen getting into it, Christina Perez's young boys... It's (as you know) a lot of fun!!!! Thanks so much for the feedback!! I really appreciate it!!!! 😃👍
Hello Lite Roadie! The problem is I was a Scoutmaster for 20 years, I have literally dozens of hobbies I used to introduce the scouts to... So my attic is packed with hobbies stuff but I retired from Scouts! LOL Thanks so much!!!!
ScoutCrafter You will never be depressed, because you have so many things you are passionate about and can keep yourself busy with. A lot of people get depression after retirement because they no longer have something to keep them engaged.
Wow, we knew your basement skills but now we learn your under roof secret skills,sir... :) Very good works sir. and good pliers. It's quite like a vampliers style.
I picked up 3 of these gas pliers over 2 weeks, I had a smaller one from yrs ago but had no idea what they are used for, because the serrations are around an arch, they grip round things with ease and with a very powerful grip and makes unloosening easy! of course you leave a mark but far less if you were using something else like a pipe wrench or normal pilers as you demonstrated. The ones I picked up are all in very nice condition and older and different brands but all US made. they are quite neat looking and thats what I was attracted to. Now I know what their purpose is!
Just recently discovered your program, and it's excellent! Some beautiful tools, ( and some not so much ) treated with the respect that old time American industry deserves! Great job! Stay the course!
I've heard that the Engineer brand CEO was visiting the USA in the early 2000's and went to a museum where he found this antique tool. Then he started to produce it in Japan and it was a success. Many other japanese brands started to produce similar pliers. Recently even Knipex entered that game with TwinGrip pliers.
Hi John! There are really good leatherworking videos on RUclips but I just wanted to do a brief demo of what the average person might want to do in the home shop! Thanks so much!!!!!!!
That leatherwork is amazing. One of the most amazing machines I have ever seen was a very old shoemaker/saddlemaker's sewing machine. I wish I had a picture of it. Anyway, great double video. It tied together very nicely. Cheers.
Hi Joe!!! I almost included a pic of my leather sewing machine!!!! I was running too later though, It is hand operated!!! Looks awesome!!!!!! It's a BOSS machine. I can't wait to watch your video later on after I finish answering the comments!!! Thanks!!!!!!!!!
that leather work you do in your loft is excellent.... Fantastic work.. the horse is brilliant.. i use sedgwick leather products on our horse tack.. great vid Scoutcrafter!! regards Darren ....from,, Essex United Kingdom
What a great paring, those pliers we're a great find nos! Your a man of many talents. Thanks for the brief leather lesson. Great leather work, the eagle looks amazing. I've carved some leaves in some of my platters. Very difficult and your work is beautiful as always. Thanks my friend.
Hello Bernie!!! Leather work can be a lot of fun and compared to our other hobbies, it’s very relaxing! With the Eagle I used a woodburning pen for the feathers! Works great!!! Thanks again Bernie!!!! 😃👍
Ofcourse you already made this video haha. Pretty sure I watched it when it came out. I was just looking at a pair of these on eBay thinking what were these used for. Incredible jaws on them. Watched again, I remember your incredible leather carving! I had to get them, will probably do the leather holder also ha.
Nice pliers, again a new one on me. Not a pouch guy, they get in the way when crawling around airplanes. Hair looks good to me. Again good stuff. Stay safe
Hello Norherman!!!!! I hardy ever wear any tools but this pouch was just such a nice fir for these cool pliers I had to couple them!!! lol I feel like wearing them just for the hell of it!! =) Thanks so much!!!!!
I ve never heard of gas and burner pliers. Impressive tool. I thought that the parallel serrations to grab screws and bolts was an innovation from vampliers-engineer pliers. It makes me wonder what other products sold as innovative today were designed a century ago.
Lovely work sir. I found that leather holsters pouches attack steel. I am not sure if it is the leather or tanning chemicals but I polished my pliers, put them in my electrician pouch and when I went to work a couple days later they had flash rust on the spots where the steel was making contact with the leather.
@@ScoutCrafter Yes. My problem is that I like leather pouches and I like to keep my pliers polished. its kind of hectic to constantly loading/unloading most of the tools found on the pouch. I wonder what how gun owners cope with this situation...
Awesome videos , Sir! I wonder, do you have a video showing how to dip or best way to put grip on bare plier handles? Just picked up a couple pairs at a flea market and wanted a way to get the missing grip back. Thanks!
Hello Dorey! I just picked up some Plasti-Dip and other more durable grips and I am going to make a video comparison very soon!!!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!
Off topic, but a thought just hit me that seemed worthwhile to share. With some of the areas that are harder to get into with the wire brush, gun barrel brushes chucked up in a drill/drill press could get a lot of work done. When I was turning a lot of pens I used to do that to rough up the inside of the drilled out resin blanks to make room for paint so the brass tube wouldn't show through. The brushes are brass and designed not to damage the steel which has to be a benefit.
Curiosity Forge - That is an awesome tip!!! They come in all different sizes and are very resilient! I've had great lick with the Dremel but the Asian wire brushes are horrible! Awesome tip!!! Thanks!!! 😃👍
ScoutCrafter Happy to share. Hopefully this helps make more funky vintage hand tool videos. I've started compiling a list of what I want in my shop starting with the Billings Bicycle wrench.
You do it all ScoutCrafter! You have many talents. Another great video along with the history of the tool in question. One question for you. Once I get my pliers to the finished state, will the shellac keep them from tarnishing? Thanks again and please keep them coming!!
Hello Pops!!! Yes! The Shellac does a great job of keeping the finish nice! Also they used lacquer and other cleat coats... I didn't polish these because if the pliers stay in the leather pouch the leather can rust them... The shellac is a better protectant then polish! Thanks so much!!!!!!!!
Hello Gam C!!! Do you mean Bag Balm? I looked it up on the web and it says it's used for cracked and dry skin! The ingredients look great for leather!!! Since 1899 so it has to be good!!!!!!! Thanks very much!!!!!!!!
Beautiful leather work. Thanks for sharing it. You could do lettering in the leather holsters . Such as owner name, name of tool or brands. Art is always a good idea too lol. You're awesome.
Hello Mary! Yes Absolutely!!! If you want to really customize the leather it's easiest to do it then make the sheath with the finished panels!! All of my leather that I use comes from cows that died naturally, like old age or lightning strikes! I'm a vegetarian and love cows so I would want my hobby to effect them, even though I pay a little more, to me it's worth it... I love dressing up the leather with lots of floral designs and wildlife!!! Thanks so much!!!!! 😃👍
Hello Jeff! Thanks very much! These were too nice to mess with but I have two other pair that I can really go over the top with no regret! Thanks very much!!!!
Is there some way to remove the logo from the leather sheath? Those style pliers must be where Vampliers got their ideas from. Thanks for another great learning video!
Hello George! That's a great question! I don't know if Lacquer thinner would do it but it's difficult because Leather is pourous and the ink goes in deep! You are so right about the Vampliers!!! Another "new" idea that's 100 years old!!!! LOL Thanks so much!!!!!
Hello Green Triumph! Great Question! These pliers came from the factory with a coating of either Shellac or Lacquer... Over the years a slight bit of rust and staining occurred under the finish and needed to be removed.. The buffer would have taken longer to remove the original finish. The reason I didn't polish this is because it's going to be in leather and the leather always has a small amount of moisture, the shellac is a better protector then polish! Thanks so much!!!!!!
jThe end-grip remind me of "Vampliers" - very useful for gripping bolts too. I was a little sad to see that you couldn't just use the polisher on those though. You gotta do what you gotta do.
Hi David! Yes you are right! Just like the "new design" Vampliers! Lol. Don't fret! I have another pair of older Burner pliers that are just screaming for POLISH!!! 😃👍. Thanks very much!!!
Hi Scout. I just started restoring tools myself and it's been a comedy of errors. I have a question about the buffing wheel. I used this thick green honing compound bar, but it doesn't seem to be working well. Am I using the wrong type of polish?
Hello Brian!!! Buffing is a little trial and error but don't worry you will get it! There are a bunch of different compound bars that work on different metals, I like the BLACK bar for what we do, it cuts fast and does a great job! Second- Get a STIFF wheel! Soft wheels are for jewelry... lol Third- Use pressure and build up a little heat! Have some water nearby to cool off the part in between buffs and dry off with paper towel before starting again! Try one of those sampler kits that have 4 different bars in it (White, Brown, Red and Black) Stiff wheel, build up heat, black polish! Sound good>!>?
stuntcardriver - Mink Oil has been around for over a century as a treatment for leather products there is just one problem, actual Mink OIL is fluid like and anytime you add oils that can absorb into the newer leather products it can "over soften" or over saturate the leather and because of the oil properties doesn't dry out quickly... So manufacturers started combining Mink oil with other products such as silicone, lanolin, bees wax... to still allow the great properties of the oil without the saturation factor! Then they call it a conditioner... Most times you see Mink oil today it's really in paste form, you don't see too much mink oil-oil around because they don't want people over applying... That's why the 50/50 mix of mineral oil and petroleum jelly works well as a quick home brew, the petroleum jelly slows down the absorption of the oil... Thanks!!! 😃👍
might be a little outside your experience but i can ask! i got a great score, a mitutoyo absolute digimatic caliper for $10, older model but super condition, the box needs to help, its black plastic, has paint spots on the lid, which i removed, but its been attached by scothcbrite it would seem (before me) and is very grey and dry. any idea what to do to bring it back to nice again without being greasy like car bumper stuff would do?
Hello Jusb! Those older Mitutoyo's are really built like tanks! My only issue with digital calipers are the battery life! Whenever I need them they are dead! Lol. I think I know what kind of case that is... If it's like mine it has a slight texture to the plastic... I think I know what you mean by greasy bumbler stuff like armor all! Lol. I think you probably have two choices, one a wax type coating that you can buff out and or always remove or a thorough wipe down and clear coat with clear semi-gloss... I have a old Brown and Sharpe first generation digital caliper that I just have because it's interesting but would never trust it.. Lol. Thanks very much!!! 😃👍
ive not had bad issues with digitals, my chinese digitals last 2 or so years on a battery ( the thing to avoid is the fake chinese batteries and buy branded ones, you still get 12 for £3) the mitutoyos should go longer still, my eyesight ha snow started to struggle, so the easy reading is becoming useful!, my vernier, cant see it, the dial guage, ok so far....

You would need a very long belt to put all your pliers in pouches on.
Scott! I have seen that drill made by Power Kraft but I think it was a popular model maybe made by a big manufacturer like Rockwell, it is really heavy duty for a 3/8" drill! Great stuff!!!!! Those drills were so beautiful!!!!!! Great score!!!!!
Hello nicolas jan! Just another item for me to trip over! Lol! I really want to wear these sometime because they make such a nice pair! Thanks very much! 😃👍
Hello Jim!!! I have always loved UK products, I first fell in love with UK craftsmanship when I started building model steam engines.... The Brits always had awesome craftsmen!!!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!!
ScoutCrafter There are still men in sheds if you know where to look :) Some good scratch built models still being made too, will see some at the steam fayre next month, that and about 50 traction engines and rollers...Might pick up an old American made wrench you never know!
Nice pliers. I dabble with some leather working myself. If you happen to be on Facebook check out B.G. Martin Leatherworks. I mostly make knife sheaths and a few other odds and ends.
Hello Ben!!! Dabble?!?!?! You are way too modest!!!! You do awesome work!!!! Your Basketweaving is outstanding!!!!!! Are they all hand sewn!??!? I have a BOSS leather sewing machine... Leatherwork, as you know, is super fun but there are a lot of leatherworkers that are a rough crowd!!!! lol Thanks very much!!! Again Awesome work!!!!
Yea, all my stuff is hand sewn. I went and looked at a sewing machine recently, but I just can't justify the expense. Is it the Tippmann Boss you have? If so I keep thinking about grabbing one of those but they are pricey as well. Some of my pics on Facebook showed a batch of knife sheaths I did a while back for a knife maker New Jersey. He makes pretty nice knives. I'd like to try my hand at knife making eventually as well. Thanks for the compliment.
may recommend reuploading the video just for leather working. and label it as that so when people search how to dye leather or something like that it will pop up and more likey get views down the road
hey man more comments then :) lol and yea but then will see there channel and will help everone in the end :) congrats on 6k. 14 more to go. nice getting atleast 50 subs a day just wait till 100 atleast a day
I dont know where to go to get the leather treating compound wgere i live So i find the 50/50 mixture of vasline and mineral oil is agood choice Thanks
Hello Abdulih! Absolutely!!! Years ago there was no store bought leather treatments, people used to use lard, beeswax and other natural products! As long as the leather doesn't dry out!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!!
where do you get the holsters? Do you ever try driving wearing one? does it get tangled in the seatbelt? do the cops fear for their lives that you might pinch them on the bum? I wouldnt be surprised!
Hello 70carlton! I got these from Amazon! Cheap too!!! I don’t often if ever wear stuff on my belt, it keeps pulling my pants down! Lol. Thanks very much!!! 😃👍
Hello Nayr747! I have good news for you!!! I am a true animal lover and have been a vegetarian (No meat, fish, chicken... Nothing with eyes!!!!!) Well, all the Leather I bought and you saw was Cows that died of NATURAL causes!!!! YES! I paid a premium for Cows that either died naturally or were struck by lightning!!! (More then you think!!!) The holster I bought however I can't control... But I am trying!!! I am not a vegan because I still eat eggs and milk but my girlfriend and I have been vegetarians for over 20 years!! Thanks very much!!!!!!!
ScoutCrafter Wow that's amazing! Really impressive commitment to helping animals. I could tell from your earlier videos you're an animal lover. Keep up the great work!

Thank you! I learn so much from you videos. Would just the polishing wheel have been enough on these?
Hello Green Triumph! Great Question! These pliers came from the factory with a coating of either Shellac or Lacquer... Over the years a slight bit of rust and staining occurred under the finish and needed to be removed.. The buffer would have taken longer to remove the original finish. The reason I didn't polish this is because it's going to be in leather and the leather always has a small amount of moisture, the shellac is a better protector then polish! Thanks so much!!!!!!
Another Awesome addition to the collection !!!!!!!
jThe end-grip remind me of "Vampliers" - very useful for gripping bolts too.
😃👍. Thanks very much!!!
perfection at it's best............Bobby
Hello Bobby!!!!!! This one ran a little long but there was a lot going on! LOL Thanks BOBBY!!!!!!
Thanks for all the help. Makes sense. I'll check out a stiffer wheel.

Very neat stuff, I like your leather crafting. Did you treat the leather stamps with shellac also?
The dad joke guy- I think I treated those with acrylic but I bet Shellac would work great!!! I have to try it!!! Thanks very much!!! 😃👍
Sweet!
Thanks very much Jim!!!!
Can you use Mink Oil for leather?
stuntcardriver - Mink Oil has been around for over a century as a treatment for leather products there is just one problem, actual Mink OIL is fluid like and anytime you add oils that can absorb into the newer leather products it can "over soften" or over saturate the leather and because of the oil properties doesn't dry out quickly...
Hello Tony- like Batman!!! Lol. This combo works just too well not to pair them! Thanks very much!!! 😃👍
P.S. Do you know any thing about the drill, and it is a Montgomery Wards drill.
Scott! I have seen that drill made by Power Kraft but I think it was a popular model maybe made by a big manufacturer like Rockwell, it is really heavy duty for a 3/8" drill! Great stuff!!!!! Those drills were so beautiful!!!!!! Great score!!!!!
where does it goes ? Do you sell it ?
Hello nicolas jan! Just another item for me to trip over! Lol! I really want to wear these sometime because they make such a nice pair! Thanks very much! 😃👍
Good God! Made in England! Make England great again :)
BTW 'Antiqwax' made leather care products which were A1...think they were British too.
Hello Jim!!! I have always loved UK products, I first fell in love with UK craftsmanship when I started building model steam engines.... The Brits always had awesome craftsmen!!!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!!
ScoutCrafter
There are still men in sheds if you know where to look :)
Some good scratch built models still being made too, will see some at the steam fayre next month, that and about 50 traction engines and rollers...Might pick up an old American made wrench you never know!
Hello Jim!!! There is nothing better then an old steam engine or Tractor show!! Best people you will ever meet!!! 😃👍
Use some E45 before your next video and tell your viewers you were using beeswax, just to increase sales for us in the UK...
Hello David! Great idea! My only problem is the “Leather guys” are ruthless!!! Lol. They will tear me apart! 😃😃 Thanks so much!!! 😃👍
hey man more comments then :) lol and yea but then will see there channel and will help everone in the end :) congrats on 6k. 14 more to go. nice getting atleast 50 subs a day just wait till 100 atleast a day
I dont know where to go to get the leather treating compound wgere i live
So i find the 50/50 mixture of vasline and mineral oil is agood choice
Thanks

Poor cows :(
Hello Nayr747!
