I’ve listened to this legitimately over 60 times in the past few years. That trumpet solo deserves an academy award!
I don't know if that's good or bad. Lol. If good, thank you so much. Much appreciated.
@@bobviavattine1715 Bob, your solo on summertime from this session is still my favorite. This one is a close second
@@mattg8636 Hi Matt, wow thank you so much. I really appreciate the kind words...... All the best....(-:
@@bobviavattine1715 😅it’s a good thing!! Great job.
I'm studying this song, and is a strong inspiration to me.
That bass player is unreal. Picked up the bass riff from the tenor after one rep. Excellent fills and technique... just a badass musician all-around.
Absolutely love the tenor fill at 4:14. Sorry, I may have to scarf it up.
Now, this is what you call music. Man I love jazz. It's the only kind of music that just makes you feel good inside and out. Great way to end the day for me.
Jazzfunk
Yeah them sounds are so uplifting and a Doctor in their own right.
@@nickycotton6137 "...a Doctor in 'they are' own right."??? This doesn't make sense.
@@master_ot6004 = Well I just find their music therapeutic. Sorry.
That drum solo was killer! Mimicking the melody like that, I could still hear it in my head
That bass fill at 8:39 is killer. I played it back at least 6 times.
8:33
The horn section is pure blazing.sheeeewit!
I listen to a lot of jazz and improv music, that guy is a beast
bassist kills it
amazing
I come back here every six months or so...
Doing "Watermelon Man" as a jazz funk was a brilliant idea given the instruments available, especially with a bass player who can really bring it. While I love playing it as a Latin jazz piece myself, I sure loved hearing this deeply grooved reinterpretation. Really cool guys!
I agree!
Soooo Love This !!!!
My middle school jazz band actually played this song, it was an absolute favorite.
yesss mine too, is really cool to play it with everyone
Seriously cool band - the old and young guys work together in perfect harmony!
And Herbie loves this version, I'm sure, cause it really swings.
the basist is something else
Are you a musician?
He held the groove really tight. His dad, (Saxophonist) must feel so proud of him
@@Nikannosneb saxophone players always appreciate a good bassist.
@@Cubsfan122112 👍
I thought the guitarist was normally supposed to keep in with the saxes in a big band.
The bass sounds cool to me...the guy is good and a creative bass player...
thought sax was spot on. great player
Absolutely, and what about the drummer solo, awesome!
They are all freakin awesome
Michael O'sullivan the sax player is the bass players dad ;)
@@michaelosullivan7087 , xxx so,,pp up 0o0 up o⁰0
seein' the boys jam out is such a great feeling.
This guy can seriously play the sax
I love many styles of music but jazz gives the player so much room to express himself. It speaks and sings without uttering a word! I love jazz!
Dear Brilliant and Wonderful. This is the best music in the world. In any world. On any avenue.
I love how the drummer in his solo mimics the bass player. That was very cool
That guy kill it on Saxophone, nice job!
Bassist is BEASTING on em’!!! Must be awesome to be in the studio rocking out with your son!
It doesn’t get better than this !!!!!!!!
This music NEVER gets old..always a new interp around the corner -one you have not heard - so, flip it, let it sizzle..and bango!!!
Who else loves the way that Johnny comes in at 8:33 ??
I immediately thought of Marcus Miller as soon as he came in!
me
yesssssss!!!!!!!!
yeah, I love it!!!😍
Me! .. and LOVE the triplets!
Memorable tune has kept me company for 55 at 70.
All incredible musicians. Unreal.
I don't how many times i played that and i never get tired of it
One thing I love in particular with these guys is: No Boasting in their playing !
Profi flute/saxist for 55 years.
could not stop smiling through the whole song. saxophone has infectious energy!
Nice trumpet solo - musical and soulful!
Ray R true but they weren’t that much in tune for some parts
😂
@@DanielGiafaglione Ah well.. Call it jazz then and it's fine ;)
@@DanielGiafaglione Agree....style and power
dAnNy nO CAp he was 100% in tune maaaan. He’s just a jazz cat
Nice groove on this tune Thumbs up for upstate NY musicians! Long history of producing many greats from Buffalo, Syracuse, Utica, Albany, Schenectady & Troy.
Nice Band, Drums tuned nicely, everyone blends well together
Pure enjoyment for me and I'm sure, the guys playing this great music.
9:24 that piano guy. Bad ass dude!
How can you not love jazz
Studio Jams has recorded this song at least 3 other times over the years but this is my favorite version. Really good tempo and the horns are spot on!!!
That bassist is a monster! :)) Oh.....He's really grooving, both in fingerpicking and in slap. I'm digging his groves right now,
and it's not easy at all!
Very cool performance of everyone, bravo!
Been back half a dozen times in 3 days. Just can’t get enough of this jam. Wish I could give infinity thumbs...
Was für tolle Menschen und wundervolle Musiker!!! ich liebe das!!
Putting song list together for this next summer. I love this funky version of Watermelon Man!!
Fantastic sax! The whole band is killing it.
Solid 👌🏿👍🏿
Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤❤️
You ain't SEEN this tenor guy's chops! Great job, guys!
I was going to look at other covers of this song after this but I don't know if I even want to anymore, it's rare that a cover fulfills so much!
Studio Jams !!!! brings me back to the Days when????? I love this....
the basist is the son of the saxophonist, music flows in the family
He is also the nephew of the trumpeter. :)
I like his bass Warwick thumb has a great slap tone
dude is working on that bass, real hip
Crivello.
If I die as I listen it would be right,,,,,,,,,
I think the same, but babe, Bassist is with a double "s" . Never mind, the members of the group (here seems it to be my fault) are great!!! I do love it!!
Finally a guy that plays slap bass that doesn't just sound like snap and rattle. Well done.
Its that Warwick growl. Very underrated for funk IMO. Check out Sonny T from new power generation.
It's that Warwick! They're killer! If you wanna see a cool bass look at the Warwick video for Bootsy Collins
Watermelon Man with a hot funky stank on it. I love it! 🎷😎👍
Excellent!!! Fantastic!!!!
Brroo...that sax...amazing!!!
Hello mes super amis
such fun being had all round. WONDERFUL
I played bass on this at our parent cafe during pickup at our school today, not nearly as slick as this, man these dudes are on another level entirely. Still, I had a gas, it’s a great tune.
That‘s the „Watermelon Jam“ 🔥
Bass-line is a GROOOOOOVIN !! ... and slappy happy :)
This is one of my all time fave videos, fave songs and fave performances by each guy in this band - but as a sax player, I gotta say this is one of the all time greatest tenor sax solos, bravo all, especially John. I know what joy you Viavattines have playing together - My 3 sons have a band they ask me to play and help arrange horns, record, etc. Smooth Talkin Perverts-mutant punk rock with (occasional) horns.
That’s great. And ya, the tenor solo-dang!
Great horn solos!!!
Not many families sound like this. Fantastic 😊
Masters at work and they make it look so easy.
Best version of Watermelon Man ever!!! Mr. Johnny V Sr, I’ve never heard you before but am now convinced, as a long time sax player, you are the best I’ve EVER heard! Super solid, funky, tasty licks...you make me never want to play again! But thanks for the Inspiration
Dominique See his sound reminds me a little of Stanley Turrentine.
Yah, a monster player, for sure. Great stuff. I hope you’re still playing!
Cool comment. And yes!
so deep in the pocket they finding lint!
BEST Comment!!! LOL
And the elusive dime... !
I’ve visit three times, absolutely solid and I’m hooked. Great job.
That was some of the smoothest/ best playing I've ever seen, absolute vibe, absolute nuts
This makes me want to listen to an entire album of this stuff.
That drumsolo!!! Holy shit what a god!! :D
very very well done version of a classic ... these guys rock !!
Tremendous!!!!!!! This rendition is the best version of this song I have heard.
This guy's drum kit sounds fucking amazing.
CHWAŁA PANU ZA TAKĄ MUZĘ!!
This channel is frigging awesome love it keep them flowing....
Excellent trumpet solo.
I like this arrngmnt..very crispy and just easy and cool...Let the guitarman plays a solo thanks...happy Bday drummerman
Cool arrngmnt...
i was waiting for the guitar solo 😭
Such a pleasure to watch these sessions. Fantastic musicianship :)
Dave nailed it on his solo
One of the Best versions of this song that I ever heard. Keeping it on the funky side of things. Nicely done
These guys are really grooving and I'm feeling it!
The drummer is killer, much respect
Great band, great horn solos! Love all the rhythm players too!
Awesome. Listening from New Zealand.
I don’t understand how anyone could dislike this
I don’t dislike this, but the horns are out of tune with each other and it doesn’t work. But overall it’s not dislikeable.
Probably because it’s mediocre, no offense
@@TheAaronRodgersTao you are right, now I can’t unhear it
Man O man! What a treat to my ears. Great rendition of an old favorite of mine. Great job all!
What a great job on this! Good solos and arrangements; well recorded.
what a great performance !!!
Viavattine's solo had that Michael Brecker vibe at 6:53. Loving this channel
Trumpet player Bob Viavattine on trumpet. showing some skills; but actually the whole band is nice I just happen to be a trumpet player so I was singling out my instrument, Well we can't take anything away from the synergy on display with this group of outstanding musicians.
Gentris mOORE it’s how it goes man. Sax for me but for the same reason and like you, I recognize the others ability too. Three of them are related go figure. Sax & trumpet players are brothers and the bassist is the sax players son. This whole jam is just sick as hell!
Great, compliments to all with very good timings, you let the music open for room for accents and solo's....i'm happy to hear this
So, i am a musician too from germany. Everybody is talking about the bass player. I think thats a good session with greatful players. All of them are first class. Helmut from Germany. 👍👍👍🎺💯💯
Such a great band, love the sound. That trumpet solo is so well executed! Much love all the way from Sweden

Studio Jams is one of the best thing that
happened to RUclips.
The producer/s is/are unselfish!
The musicians are awesome.
FANTASTIC.ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. Congrats all the way.
Good musicians having so much fun, such joy.
gonna be playing this for our new formed jazz band in school, pretty happy about it !
Thank you thank you for posting. This is why I loves the you tube.
In the 70's, Eddie Weed, Kay Mack and Bob Douglas played watermelon man at the Sherwood in Tigard OR. Kay was a torch singer but played the snare and sock cymbal. It was good!
Great song, you guys did good!
Iguana
I love this funky version! I'm playing trumpet along with this to work up my own solo for an upcoming jam and it gives me great ideas. Thanks for posting this!
Awesome!, I have no words. All great musicians.
Wow incredible jam bass drums keys horns guitar everything wow!,,,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE!!! You guys are such an collective and compliment each other! Such a joy to my ears...I even thought I heard the 13th note! Well Done!!!💝
