For Context- He states that he sees truckers with older trucks defaulting on loans more than new trucks and he recommends drivers to buy the classics like pete 389, Kw W900 that hold more value.

But also that w900 gonna cost you so much more in fuel to run that truck, I guarantee you the extra fuel cost will eat up the value that supposedly it holds, for a finance guy yes it will make him more money if he reposes that truck and then sell it to get his money back, so that w900 only works better if it gets repossessed for a repo guy, but not for business of trucking, TOO MUCH EXTRA COST IN FUEL

People in the comments are forgetting that trucks are considered "classics" by banks somewhere around 20ish years old. That's ~2004 and older trucks. Nobody is disputing the reliability of the pre-emissions trucks. I think what Bruno is saying that trucks from that era are the BEST investments because they hold their value as a result of the reliability and cool factor. That allows the lender to give you a reasonable interest rate, and allows you to sell the truck without huge depreciation if you see the writing on the wall with your payments. In addition, Bruno says the brand new trucks are also doing better than "used". Of course a brand new 2024 generic truck will be more reliable than the same model but high mileage and out of warranty!

I realized very quickly that the DEF trucks would cause me too much downtime and put me out of business. I bought an 06 Pete 379 with a C15 and a 13 Speed. He was talking about single operator owners and in most cases startups. It sounds like the big cost that kills the startups is the repairs due to the increase in labor and parts. Then you add to that the down time for the repairs because there aren't enough mechanics to repair them. Then when they sell them because they can't afford it they're upside down on their loans but still have to make the payments. Most people don't have business degrees which sounds like it should be a requirement

    • @johnmourer5747
      @johnmourer5747 10 месяцев назад +9

You are 100 percent right. I'm a company driver. In the last 10 years, 90 percent of the shop issues are related to the def systems failing. Volvo and freightliner. Pre def trucks were far more reliable. Currently the company has 2 trucks in the shop related to the def system. These trucks only have about 330k miles on them.

You sound like an old timer stuck in your old ways and refusing to adapt. I've driven both, Freightliner and Volvo's. But gave me a hard time and both have done me good. It depends on your mechanic and if they're good or not ornif they're not trying to screw you over. Some mechanics are good with volvo's and some with Freightliner. If I were to say which gave me a harder time it's the Freightliners. The volvo's are just more expensive but perform way better.

I bought my 2016 Volvo back in October of 2022. Dealership went out of business in January of 2023. I had major issues also in January. New clutch, throw out bearing, Rear main seal, timing cover leaking oil, valve cover leaking oil, got the valves adjusted while the mechanic was there, new brakes, and new crankcase filter. April had to replace water pump, May was the starter and one of the tensioner pulleys. June was new tires all the way around. August I needed a new airbag. Then December while I was pulling away from a dock my transfer case exploded. All this while not missing a payment on my truck, but it has been extremely difficult. That being said this year has started a little better. Been getting the truck sorted little by little. I'm not in this to fail. Sadly to many will. If you just look at trucking as another job or business you will fail. This is a lifestyle not meant for everyone.

I've been working for the same guy for 11 years pulling a curtain trailer and more recently a regular flatbed. We don't really see a slow time because we only haul direct for a few customers. We have 20 drivers and we're all busy, especially right now. My paychecks haven't changed much in the last two years. Some are higher if take some of the longer loads but I prefer to be home every night so I generally do local stuff. Some of the drivers are actually experiencing burnout because they haven't taken any time off other than weekends.

The reason an older truck breaks down is because they lack maintenance.
The new trucks CANNOT match the reliability of the old ones.
    Case in point Fitzgerald Gliders.
They were actually selling more trucks/dumps chassis than the new OEMs.
Simple non-electronic turbos, one computer instead of 5, drum brake systems instead of $ 2000 per wheel discs brakes ($ 10k on tractor & $6K on a trailer ).
Older trucks are almost 60% cheaper to repair than new ones...🥂

Yes, independent only shops can see 3 out of 5 issues. And i lost two weeks instead of one.
I would like to order a new glider.
It's not available at this time. So im looking for a durable, reliable pre emmision truck.
The manufacturers are putting themselves out of bussiness trying to fix a warranty nightmare that even they dont seem to have the time to r and d properly. All technology and emmission related.
Oem Engineering says that the newest epa regulations for 2027 have not been able to be set up.
Oems need to get together before Epa puts trucking into fred flintstone era.
Experts say that even if we had a class 8 battery . Its range is 300 miles in warm weather. It's much less for cold and time.
Look up roll onroll off ships that battery-operated vehicles have been catching on fire. It's a big deal.
      It's not being reported.
      I can go 1200 miles to a fill-up.
I dont have to wait hours because the chargers aren't working properly. Or they just aren't there yet.
We dont have the infrastructure to support electric bicycles for everyone.
Energy experts show we've closed more power plants and that they are not replacing them.
Along with this, we would need more precious resources that we dont have the ability to get.
There are overlaping issues with batteries at this time. The technology has improved but not to go solely on electricity. Storage capabilities need to be exponentially improved before they are considered viable.
A former employer preordered some electric trucks. For 2019 delivery.
It never happened. They weren't ready.
At 1 million dollars purchase price, these trucks aren't practical.
It's about 175,000 usd for a new class 8 diesel.

I partially agree . I bought my last new truck in Sept 2014. My 2015 Peterbilt 579 with 144 ARI sleeper, Cummins (Cummin’ apart)ISX (it sucks ) engine needed a top end overhaul at 608,000 miles (ridiculous)! Last year and a half had numerous emissions related problems. If you have a new truck they have become more reliable than the trucks 2009-2017. If you have a pre-emissions (no DEF) truck then you are better off. After 34 yrs OTR , O/O 19+ yrs I sold my truck and went back to being a company driver . Only for a few years to replenish my retirement accounts and then I am out . May look then for a part time yard jockey job but I can’t wait to get away from this drastically deteriorating profession.

Forty year driver here/maintenance chief for a company with old trucks….Really good advice,if you are going old truck,go pre emission….Emissions upkeep is what’s killing the guys that don’t have warranty to cover them….Same with guys unloading after two years on newer, you just can’t afford it….Another,if you can’t service/work on your own equipment you are screwed, don’t do it….If you find a high paying niche job, long term you can afford to do more than most….If it’s straight OTR your screwed every way, your just trading your truck for a paycheck with all the headache….By the time you pay it off you’re in for big headaches and no value….Same forty years ago, nothing changed….Government scam making you a slave, don’t do it,believe me….And remember this old saying “Everything bigger with a big truck”,payment, insurance, tires, fuel, fees, maintenance, everything….I have watched many many fail in forty years,I know….Stay away if you don’t have deep pockets/maintenance facility….Best advice you ever got.

Let me fill yall in why older trucks default. It’s not just because the break downs no. It’s the payments on older trucks are much much more. Require a higher down payment taking away the buyers savings to fix said truck. Interest rates on older trucks INSANE. No matter the credit you’re still looking on a 50k used truck paying upwards of 90k when all said and done. Loan terms are also shorter making the payments even higher. These lenders completely take advantage of the buyer in the used market.
As far as new trucks. Maybe not as much breakdowns but, you are now in a 7 year loan. Still a high interest rate. For a 200k truck you’re looking at 300k all said and done if not more the worse the credit you have. This guy said it himself. They want to finance the trucks they can resale get their money and a profit from the truck. Older trucks that 50k truck just won’t sell for 50k out here. Unlike a brand new truck will sell immediately as the price of new trucks HAVE NOT FALLEN TO 2019 prices like he claims. A brand new Peterbilt 389 is still around 250k$ or more.

"Hey there, Mother Trucker News fam! Let's talk trucks - specifically, the fuel-efficient beasts that keep us rolling. Now, I've got a soft spot for the classics, but when it comes to crunching numbers in today's fuel market, new trucks with their 7.6 to 8 miles per gallon efficiency take the cake. With over 15 years in the diesel tech game, I've seen firsthand how higher RPMs can burn fuel faster, making those older models less economical. But hey, mad respect to the veterans who paved the way for us all. Building a solo trucking business ain't easy, especially with ELDs, paper logs, and all the tech headaches that come with 'em. And let's not forget the stats on DPF system breakdowns - ain't nobody got time for that! Now, I'm not dissing the old-schoolers who prefer simplicity, but give me a modern shop any day over tinkering with more than just changing the oil. And when it comes to money, it's all about smart investing. Crunching the numbers, I could roll in a new rig for 10 months, bring in 5K a pop, and still have peace of mind under warranty for the first 500,000 miles. With careful maintenance planning, even when that warranty runs out, I'll still be living the dream. And let's not forget, I can handle any manual or automatic with ease and fix whatever comes my way - just like an eco-system, more efficient until it hits a snag. So, remember, in trucking and in life, you get out what you put in. Keep on truckin'!"

If I buy a piece of junk freightliner/International/Volvo at 10 years old, its had more drivers and shops than carter has liver pills. If the doors are barely hanging on (hay wired), bumpers bungie corded, brake drums pitted and trenched like truck parking lot, oil as thick as winter molasses then he is right. When you get done with the "virgin rubber" idea of your new truck...you will be stuck beside the road or posted "out of service"at the inspection barn when you get called in. All right the answer to why the finance broker prefers new equipment is because at auction they will fetch a higher price .... period 🤷 There's a larger market for them.... So of course inevitely the debtor is going to make at least a year's worth of payments on the truck Plus if he defaults at auction the truck will fetch a decent price which will either cover the debt or lessen the loss .....
My 2023 Kenworth T680 Paccar engine..... The injectors took a s*** within 30,000 mi..... Then the DEF quality sensor at 40,000 mi ... 60,000 miles to DEF pump .... Then at 89,000 miles the PDB went bad .. power distribution box essentially a fancy fuse box that connects to the can system network 🤷 .
No biggie right I covered under warranty Well guess what.... The truck was 1-year-old and had 89,000 mi on it.... These new trucks the electrical components In about I would say 65% of the truck is covered under the so-called bumper to bumper warranty.... After one year you're on the hook for 65% of the truck I was given a $6,800 bill until this is what it's going to take to fix your 1-year-old truck....
I said whoa hold on immediately called up The regional dealership rep and an emailed him a service bulletin that they had back in 2019 informing technicians that they had a bad batch of PDB ..... I then put my foot down and said look there's no reason the PDB Should have or could have went bad in one year.
Fortunately he agreed with me and Kenworth replaced it under a good faith warranty...... Funny thing though is I still had to pay $700 and something dollars For what you might ask.....
I imagine it was for labor but right there on the invoice it said dealer markup obsolete part 🤔....

I've been in industry for over 30 years I think it depends on situation my opinion is if you stay on top of maintenance with any truck and spend your money right you can make it now with that said do it while you're young pay your parents a little rent so when you want home time you got a place to go to. My opinion is first learn everything you can stay positive also learn with standard transmission that way if you decide heavy hauling eventually you will already be ready. Build your finances if you can and serious run hard for like 2 years before you buy your truck so you're able to put a decent down payment or maybe get a personal loan at a low interest rate credit is top priority the lower interest the better payment. Also really a young person shouldn't really start trucking until they like 20 just opinion it is what it is. I say good luck to everyone chasing there dreams unfortunately this industry is rough

How about trailers...are trailers his wheelhouse? Is it relatively easy to get loans on trailers?

Go talk to the dealer, they aren't going to talk about anything past four years old, they want you to trade it for new, grant it if you are buying a new truck i would think that is what you want, these new trucks aren't made to last ten years or millions of miles, for that fact, our pre emissions trucks are 17 years old, who would think they would still be running, OTR guys run 3000 miles a week on average, times 17 years, that's 2,652,000 miles on that truck, they don't plan on us finding old trucks and running them at some point you have to upgrade your truck, you could do it like me and have a row of olf Freightliners, restoring them to get a newer trucks every three to five years, its a real struggle, unfortunately there might have electric trucks figured out before the emissions sysyems on our five year old trucks stay strong guys

I would NOT EVEN recommend buying a new truck. The insurance is crippling.
Get a good used truck with 300K to 400K and go for what you know.
If you take care of it, it will take care of you.
My first one was a 2012 Cascadia with an ISX. EVERYONE told me I was going to lose my ass.
    That truck built my fleet.

Insurance rates of $40k-$70k (yr) a year will knock many O/O into company drivers.

If you all didn’t know this car and truck manufactures don’t make money on the sales they make money having an existing fleet on the road selling parts so these DPF system failures are part of their profit

The newer trucks are being pushed in because it's a cycle of business. Safety features better fuel economy and DEF is just a pitch line. Lenders make money mechanic shops makes money both ways repairs and storage time. Insurance still get paid rather you move or not. I'll take any old skool truck over any DEF truck. Look at how the DEF cake up around the tank if spilled think about it thru your system. Besides how can you default with a paid off truck.
