Audrey Hepburn's Secret Diet Revealed

  • Hello Lovelies,
Today I will be discussing Audrey Hepburn's Diet. Audrey Hepburn is an icon. She was a gifted oscar-winning actress and philanthropist. She also inspired women with her signature and timeless style. She was also famous for her notoriously thin figure, which had been the subject of eating disorder accusations over the years. But as People reports in this week's cover story, these rumors were never true. Hepburn was never even partial to dieting. "She loved Italian food and pasta. She ate a lot of grains, not a lot of meat, and a little bit of everything," her son Luca Dotti said. Hepburn's longtime partner Robert Wolders noted that although the actress did not diet, the two enjoyed taking long walks together and often outwalk him. "She had a healthy metabolism, but she was not excessive," said Wolders, who began a relationship with Hepburn in 1980 that lasted until she died in 1993.
Hepburn's diet was healthy and straightforward. For breakfast, she and Wolders often had brown bread with jam; for lunch, lean meat or pasta with produce fresh from their garden; and for dinner, they had chicken soup with veggies. That's not to say Hepburn didn't indulge-her partner recalls, "she had chocolate after dinner, baking chocolate [and] she had a finger or two of Scotch at night." Plus, Hepburn was a fan of carbohydrates. "She was crazy about the pasta," younger son Dotti recalls in a previous People interview. In his book, Audrey at Home, Dotti wrote, "Mum had a serious pasta addiction. She couldn't do without pasta."Her signature dish was spaghetti al Pomodoro, which she cooked at home practically every week. "Her absolute favorite was spaghetti with tomato sauce. She could live on that alone," Dotti said. Although she had instructions for "impressive and ambitious dishes ... these never made their way to our dining table. In the kitchen, as in life," writes Dotti in the book's introduction, "my mother gradually freed herself from everything superfluous to keep only what truly mattered to her."
This included good, fresh food, and what Hepburn liked to cook and eat was a reflection of her experiences, preferences, and life. She embraced her role as a housewife, a mother, a wife, once saying, "It's sad if people think that's a dull existence, but you can't just buy an apartment and furnish it and walk away. It's the flowers you choose, the music you play, the smile you have waiting for. I want it to be gay and cheerful, a haven in this troubled world."

I love Audrey Hepburn! Regarding the pasta she ate I'm sure she ate smaller portions, but I've been told that the pasta in Europe is much different than the pasta from America. In fact, this person who told me this was diabetic and he brought pasta back to the US and found his blood glucose readings went down when eating a diet of European pasta as opposed to American pasta. It makes me curious to travel over there and check it out! It is no wonder Hepburn would pack a suitcase of pasta when traveling.

im reading the book ‘Audrey Hepburn, an elegant spirit’ written by her son, Sean. he wrote her recipe:
‘peel and dice a small onion, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 carrots, 2 stalks of celery; chop and put in the pot. add 2 large tins of italian pelati, or prepeeled Roma tomatoes, and half a bunch of fresh basil, washed, leaves whole. add a long drizzle of virgin olive oil and simmer on low for 45 minutes. turn off and let rest at least 15 minutes. serve over 1 box of pasta cooked barely al dente (still a bit of a snap at the core) with lots of fresh parmesan (reggiano) and the other half of the basil, well washed and cut with scissors in a cup or glass to prevent bruising or blackening.’

Yes Audrey didn't have enough food during the war, but I also believe she had a little bit of anorexia, but not to the extent that ruined her beauty. She was a ballet dancer. Most ballet dancers have eating disorders. Some are somewhat anorexic and others bulimic. Audrey was also an actress who also have heavy pressure put on them to be thin. She chain smoked which also helped her stay thin. That's what models do to stay thin.

The reason she had such a thin frame is because she was nearest starvation during World War II during the time that was her formative years. Basically malnutrition during her youth played a very large role in the way she looked. Yes, people can eat too much and gain weight but she always had problems with her slight frame.

A lot of people are attributing her thinness due to her malnutrition in childhood, but if you look at what happens to eating disorder patients who recover, they heal in more ways than one when they start eating normally again. People who are nutritionally depleted don’t permanently stay thin. It doesn’t make sense for Audrey Hepburn to be the one exception to the course of nature. She was just naturally thin. Yes it’s possible.

People of a bigger size can propably feel the effects of nicotine in that sense, but if they have no intention for weight loss or keeping the weight off, they most likely eat despite of the effect (or don't pay attention to it or eat around cigarette times) Often also the longer you smoke, the smaller the effect is.

She was a truly beautiful human being in body and soul. The story of her starvation in youth was as heart wrenching as her view of chocolate was endearing. But eating mainly pasta and sauce is a starvation diet in itself, and she died way too young at only 63 of gastrointestinal cancer. It does look like a beautiful book and tribute to her though, and I would love to read it for the stories and pictures alone.

Intestinal disease is a clear indication of a poor diet. Yes Audrey Hepburn was thin and beautiful, but did she eat healthy? No.

Great video! Interesting to see how Old Hollywood actresses maintain their figure. Although I think in Audrey’s situation (as mentioned in the video), her wartime years probably had an impact on her diet and attitudes towards food.

I don't think she eat, like at all.
She said that during war she hated how scarce the food were so she tried to stop herself from eating food and after the war she got into chain smoking therefore didn't eat much either. Also she hated sweets. Also the solider was English who gave her a cigarette. She smoked it and she always associated it w/ scent of freedom which is way she smoked it until the end of her life

she was so tiny because she almost starved to death in her younger/formative years. the malnourishment permanently stunted her growth, so she stayed tiny regardless

One of her sons, Sean, I think, stated that she suffered from anemia her whole life doubtless as a result of nearly starving as a young girl when you should be building bones and muscles etc. as you are growing. Poor wee pet! My rule of thumb regarding fashion is that if Audrey wouldn’t wear it, neither will I!
