Hey everyone, I played Billie in this film 2 years ago and I am here to tell you that there was no proper ending to the story. It is all up to you guys to figure that out. I was just as curious as you when I read the script. All your theories sound so cool by the way!
Here's my theory. The 'mermaid' isn't actually a mermaid but just a normal girl. She was either drowned by someone or just fell in the sea accidentally. Due to this accident, she has lost her memory and is also in a shock therefore she does not talk, eat nor drink and that also justifies her abnormal activities. The first thing she heard was the sentence "you are a mermaid" when she woke up. This has a psychological effect on her subconscious mind and she really starts to think and believe that she is a mermaid. She tries to breathe in the bathtub but fails because she is a normal human. Billie always wanted to take her to the beach. So what we see in the end is that Billie takes the Girl to the beach or the Girl takes Billie to the beach. Before she leaves, she places a strand of hair in Sam's mouth. This is a part of mermaid mythology. Mermaid trades her hair for something else. In this case, Billie. The two then go to the beach. Try their mermaidy thing and drown. And possibly die. But hold on...there's another possibility. And this is not that dark. Maybe she really is a mermaid and has lost her ability to breathe underwater. Maybe a curse by her family members, etc. She cries because she cant go back. The family finds her, brings her home. Only Billie is the one who sympathizes with her. The mermaid tries to breathe underwater in the bathtub and actually succeeds. She cries afterwards not because of failure but because she can finally go back home. (Tears of joy) The next day, she leaves. Taking Billie with her. She trades her hair for Billie. No one knows if Billie actually became a mermaid or drowned. The End.
this is awesome. i love how you’ve broken down two different possibilities - both versions are very telling. i love the idea that she’s not actually a mermaid but believes she is one through suggestion.. it makes you wonder what Billie might have said to her and how much she’s taken on board.
i wish i could say yes! as much as i loved making this film and working with this creative team was a blessing, i don’t think there’s anything we could add to this story that wouldn’t detract from the mystery. but i love that you’re interested in whether there’s more, your interest makes me really happy!

I feel like the siren or "mermaid" took Billie to the ocean and ate her.... But I'm so confused.... I could be wrong but.. that's what I'm thinking.... EDIT: ok another thing I was also thinking was that, the mermaid lost her memories by which her drowning in the first scene, when Billie says and calls her a mermaid, the mermaid then believes Billie. Not done... The tub scene is the mermaid trying to breathe underwater and success is brought upon her and she cries tears of joy. The mermaid is then wanting to go home so she takes Billie and leaves a strand of her hair by which is often done by mermaids as a trade thing. The mermaid could have been a siren in this whole thing but the mermaid/siren brought Billie to the ocean to either eat or let her live with her. But another thing is that sirens often eat and drown men and r not that violent to women. So the siren thing isn't possible. Mermaids don't eat people they eat fish and sorts. She could have wanted to thank Billie for helping her with her memories by taking her to her home. And the FOUND poster was probably done by the man saying he found the women and is waiting for someone to know her and take her home, the reason it probably showed was probably because the cause of Billie missing was her and could be saying she had done everything. And the scene where she is outside and is scared of the water was maybe because she was lost in the ocean so she didn't want to touch the water like in the first scene she was scared and remembers that If I am wrong which is highly possible comment what you think.
Billie believed that the girl was a mermaid. She must have over heard her family saying that they were going to tell Billie the girl had gone home. Therfore, since she is believing the girl is a mermaid. She went to the ocean to find her. I don't know about the hair in Sam's mouth but I think it belonged to the girl that washed up on shore. Edit: The FOUND sign might have something to tie into the story. I read through the comments. Many people are confused and believe Billie got eaten. One comment also suggested that the Burnette was a ghost of a mermaid, but I think otherwise. Like I said before, Billie must have gone into the ocean to find the Burnett. And like someone else also suggested, the hair in Sam's mouth was most likely a sign for her to check for Billie. Another theory I have is that the girl WAS a mermaid and bonded with Billie. So they both went to the ocean. But the girl could also have not had any memories of her past, explaining why she was shocked to touch water and didn't speak. She believed she was a mermaid, like Billie said. They both went to the ocean and most likely drowned The Burnette was probably screaming for help for billie
My theory. Read it and watch again paying attention to what I've said. You may see more. Billie finds the mermaid and knows exactly what she is. In her first conversation with the mer, she starts to tell her about her own family. She says "Are you a mermaid? You look like a mermaid. I bet you are. My daddy cau.. " then her sister stops her immediately. The sister knows that she is not human because she's offended when the father refers to the mer and her sister as "the girls". She tells Billie later that the girl is NOT a mermaid. Knowing that she has been made human as a harsh punishment for some kind of untrustworthy act. She tells her father that she "doesn't trust her" and her statement " I can't believe you have her my room" was made because she's a mer betrayer, not deserving of descent treatment. The scene where the girl goes into the ocean for a swim and then stands for a while before leaving isn't the former mermaid, it's the SISTER. The girls are half mermaid. Billie had not reached the age of turning yet. The father tried to help a mermaid and ended up falling in love and having children with her. That's why the sister said "how you tried to help mom?" Mermaids that can no longer change forms either have to FULLY change or are drowned/eaten. That's why the daughter said "what if someone tried to drown her" and the father said "She's tiny. If they tried, she wouldn't be here". No evidence of a mer can be left for human confirmation of their existence. Half mer's eat and drink (using significant amounts of salt. Note the meal scene and the huge salt container on the table). They appear outwardly to be human. The sister noted that the transition to fully human isn't working out because she refuses to eat or drink. Knowing what needs to be done, the sister starts to stage the scene of the girls "return home" for her sisters sake by taking the photo and making the "found" poster. She tells her father that he can't save her. He says he knows and that he will tell Billie she went home (basically, someone saw the found poster and came to take her home). The sister eats the mer, hence the hair in her throat (as mentioned in other posts, mers/sirens do trade their hair for things but not stands of it and DEFINITELY not left in the throat). Billie senses it when she awakens. Billie internally matured the instant her rose colored, childlike view of reality is crushed. Not understanding mer law, and feeling heartbroken/ revolted by her family's decision, Billie leaves her family and goes to live in the sea. Notice the father checks on land but the sister goes DIRECTLY to the sea. The siren song that makes the sister cry at the end is Billie's. She has chosen the sea and will not be returning. Just my thought on the movie.
The thing is, Billie’s sister looked surprised when she coughed up the hair and immediately went to check on Billie. I think when she saw the hair, she realized Billie might have already been taken in exchange. Why else would she suspect Billie was gone after pulling it out?
I agree with so many of your points. I do think that the girls' mother was a mermaid who came to shore either because she was rejected by her society for something she did, or she made a deal similar to like the one in 'The Little Mermaid.' She had children with the father who tried hard to help her to adjust to life on land but she had trouble and I reckon, either went mad and killed herself or made a deal and returned to the sea. Maybe as well, she could've been taken away? It doesn't take long for the older sister and particularly the dad to figure out what this young mute girl really is. The fear that someone could've drowned her could be either angry mermaids not wanting her to live, or more likely, humans aware of the existence of mermaids not wanting her to live amongst them. It's very emotional for the dad and older sister obviously because of memories of the mom and seeing this young mermaid isn't going to adjust to life on land with them. Perhaps in this society as well, there is a place for former mermaids to go to help them fit in, and also maybe it's a place where they get studied and used for any special abilities, hence the older sister saying people are probably out looking for her. These 'people' could be former mermaids who sense her to some degree. In this group, there are rules and you can get rejected or maybe even killed but the dad and older sister reach a point where they decide that her going there is probably the best decision for everybody, including the mermaid. I think the mermaid ultimately decides that a way she can live and go back to her original tribe is to humble herself by cutting off and sacrificing her hair, and taking Billie with her. She could've had Billie killed but I want to believe she offered Billie up to be changed into a mermaid and the other mermaids agree because they are an endangered species. The mermaids also could have sent the young mermaid to shore specifically to get a new recruit and they are pleased to sense that young Billie is at least half-mer already. The hair left in the older sister's mouth is a way of letting her know what's happened as it is the least the mermaid can do but it also might be an act of defiance, like 'no way am I being taken away by your people to be probed and controlled.' The older sister is distraught at the end because her little sister is either deceased or most likely living as a mermaid and most likely never coming back.
I believe that the FOUND sign has a lot to do with this. When the girl woke up She found a piece of hair/string in her mouth. That could have been the lost girls hair. Signing her to check for Billie. The lost girl was found washed up dead on the beach and the girl knew she was a mermaid. They were talking to the ghost of a mermaid the whole time and Billie wanted to become like her. But as you could have seen, the Mermaid couldn't talk. She was dead and she wasn't human. She couldn't tell Billie that she was dead. Billie soon tried to bond and become a mermaid like her but couldn't because she's a human. She could have drowned herself or the Mermaid found her and was screaming like in the beginning for help. That's my theory.

I think billie thought it was a mermaid but actually, it wasn't. it was probably just the ghost of a drowned girl. after she woke up, the ghost girl was naturally fascinated and attracted to water. in the end she understood that her place was in the sea, where her body belongs. the scene when she cries is probably the moment she remembers she is no longer alive and she has to go back to the sea, to find eternal rest. seeing the "mermaid" going to the sea, billie probably as you just said, wanted to be a mermaid like her, etc. but there was no mermaid. never.
I think this short film purposely ended like that so we can use our own interpretation of all the evidence the creator of the short film has left us to conclude the film.

Trading their hair for something is in mermaid mythology, so the girl traded her hair that was in Sam’s mouth for Billie, so they went looking for her. Why Sam was yelling at the end was because she heard a siren from the “mermaid” girl. Sirens can mean many things in mermaid mythology, but I thing in this it meant one of the popular ones which is successfully taking or capturing their bait/trade.
Feel sorry for her, she's tortured for who she is ... Wants to go home, but can't until she is called , life with legs is unfamiliar to her . Just goes to show our lives in the ocean is as dangerous as our lives on land.
i wish i could say there was! i had such a blast making this film and the crew behind it were the most fun to work with. i don’t think we’ll make a true sequel to Mermaid Homesick but i’d love to make more films in the similar sort of subtle fantasy vein..
How's this theory: The Girl had indeed been a mermaid who was allowed to come onto shore to find her replacement. I think she had been a human herself once but had been tricked/convinced to become a mermaid (thus taking the place of the mermaid who had convinced her.) The Girl was given a chance to find a human to take her place, but if she failed then she (The Girl) would be stuck in an in-between state where she wasn't entirely human but not a mermaid either. For awhile she liked the touch of water while on land because it was familiar but reality set in when she couldn't stay underwater in the bathtub. She had to find a replacement. The hair in Sam's mouth was a sort of payment for Billie (in the fairy tale the little mermaid's sisters gave up their hair to the sea witch for the dagger that would let her become a mermaid again.) The Girl and Billie went down to the ocean. Billie became a mermaid. The Girl reverted to fully human, thus the "Found" poster.

Sirens have to get creative and maybe tried to attract people to help a drowning person,Resulting in people helping her and her getting the most oblivious person,Billie,the easiest and most easy to trick prey. As I read in some comments,With the hair,She traded her hair for billie and got her. If she was a normal girl then how could she get her hair stuck down the blond girls throat? She would've have to put it there with her fingers and i am sure the blonde would wake up instantly. Sirens don't eat nor drink human food,they eat human flesh. But I'm still wondering about the missing poster,I don't know about that. But i think the siren sang to attract or mock (?) The blond girl for her being rude and mean to her.
Ocaams Razor. The simplest explanation is usually correct. The girl was a mermaid, she took her her friend billie back to the ocean with her, Billie probably became a mermaid herself and the end.
I think the mermaid is a metaphor for her mother's suicide because she was depressed, but also for the overactive imagination of a little girl who invents a story to accept the unacceptable. Just as her mother threw herself into the ocean, Billie did so to join her. Sometimes you can't help a depressed person ("you can't help her"). The mermaid never really existed. The ocean is the cradle of life and the foetus grows in water (amniotic fluid). Some people can't stand life on land and want to go back to where they came from. That's what Billie's mum wanted. Her little girl stayed there and took refuge in an imaginary world, which she turned into reality by jumping into the ocean herself.
I don't understand the ending. It doesn't make any sense.What happened to the so called mermaid and little girl. What is with that hair in the big sister mouth. This movie was weird.

Trading their hair for something is in mermaid mythology, so the girl traded her hair that was in Sam’s mouth for Billie, so they went looking for her. Why Sam was yelling at the end was because she heard a siren from the “mermaid” girl. Sirens can mean many things in mermaid mythology, but I thing in this it meant one of the popular ones which is successfully taking or capturing their bait/trade.

Feel sorry for her, she's tortured for who she is ... Wants to go home, but can't until she is called , life with legs is unfamiliar to her . Just goes to show our lives in the ocean is as dangerous as our lives on land.

i wish i could say there was! i had such a blast making this film and the crew behind it were the most fun to work with. i don’t think we’ll make a true sequel to Mermaid Homesick but i’d love to make more films in the similar sort of subtle fantasy vein..

How's this theory: The Girl had indeed been a mermaid who was allowed to come onto shore to find her replacement. I think she had been a human herself once but had been tricked/convinced to become a mermaid (thus taking the place of the mermaid who had convinced her.) The Girl was given a chance to find a human to take her place, but if she failed then she (The Girl) would be stuck in an in-between state where she wasn't entirely human but not a mermaid either. For awhile she liked the touch of water while on land because it was familiar but reality set in when she couldn't stay underwater in the bathtub. She had to find a replacement.
The hair in Sam's mouth was a sort of payment for Billie (in the fairy tale the little mermaid's sisters gave up their hair to the sea witch for the dagger that would let her become a mermaid again.) The Girl and Billie went down to the ocean. Billie became a mermaid. The Girl reverted to fully human, thus the "Found" poster.

I think that it was a siren,Mostly because Sirens like to attract their prey,and due to us these days being rather inside than outside playing on the beach we like to stay home as we mostly see with the people in the movie.
So? Sirens have to get creative and maybe tried to attract people to help a drowning person,Resulting in people helping her and her getting the most oblivious person,Billie,the easiest and most easy to trick prey.
As I read in some comments,With the hair,She traded her hair for billie and got her.
If she was a normal girl then how could she get her hair stuck down the blond girls throat? She would've have to put it there with her fingers and i am sure the blonde would wake up instantly.
Sirens don't eat nor drink human food,they eat human flesh.

Ocaams Razor. The simplest explanation is usually correct. The girl was a mermaid, she took her her friend billie back to the ocean with her, Billie probably became a mermaid herself and the end.

I think the mermaid is a metaphor for her mother's suicide because she was depressed, but also for the overactive imagination of a little girl who invents a story to accept the unacceptable. Just as her mother threw herself into the ocean, Billie did so to join her. Sometimes you can't help a depressed person ("you can't help her"). The mermaid never really existed. The ocean is the cradle of life and the foetus grows in water (amniotic fluid). Some people can't stand life on land and want to go back to where they came from. That's what Billie's mum wanted. Her little girl stayed there and took refuge in an imaginary world, which she turned into reality by jumping into the ocean herself.
