hope you found this in depth tutorial helpful! It’s not as perfect as the nail salon but I’m just not one who ever loved going to get my nails done 🥲 leave any other tips you have below!
Hi Jenna, I am a going on 43 yr nail tech ugh makes me feel so old. I used to use Nailtique I don’t think I spelled that right but it is late but it is a nail strengthener which has formaldehyde to help strengthen but if you find your nails are getting too brittle they make a no. 1 which has less or no formaldehyde check the ingredients. Good to switch back and forth with them so they stay more fixable. If you want another good base coat is a sticky type base coat that sticks to your nail and first coat of polish. Essie has one called First Base base coat or orly make one forgot name might be called sticky but it is a orange clear color. At the Spa I work now we use Seche vité top coat and the base I think called clear. Not the milky one. I think I love the product Dazzle Dry polish system dries in 5 minutes like it’s crazy would be affordable for you to get but expensive for our spa to replace all our OPI polish and gel. You can get mini set on Amazon or their website I think or full size on their site. There base has to be clear so if it is milky you just put in warm water for a few minutes and 2 coats of base which I just saw on the direction and used it when I had my own business never knew this 🤷♀️ You do a wonderful job they look great!
This came at the perfect time!! I’m getting tired of the grown out gel polish look and the removal process is such a pain 🥲 can’t wait to try your tips!
Ahh I am sooo happy I found you!!! This is exactly what I wanted and wow 7 days is huge as my polish only lasts two days but looks like crap by then too. I’ve been searching for ways to do my nails that aren’t damaging or require UV light
I stopped gel polish during Covid. Tried press-ons, stick on polish, and regular polish. I really like gel polish the best so I decided to learn to do my own. I watched alot of RUclips videos and got the basics. I've been getting a solid 3 weeks of wear. I give my nails a break overnight after removal and religiously use nail oil every day. I'm impressed with no chipping for 7 plus days using regular polish. You are correct that nail prep makes a huge difference. The gel polish takes longer when you do your own nails, but I'm retired now, so I have the time, and saving the cost of a salon doesn't hurt either.
I stopped doing UV lamp manicures too. It didn't agree with my nails, pricey and just time consuming. I learned how to take good care of my nails by watching a nail technicians here on YT, Anna @TheSalonLife :) Highly recommend! My nail routine is: 1. Remove polish with nail polish remover 2. Push cuticles back with a pusher 3. Cuticle remover (I use Blue Cross) 4. Wash it off and use cuticle tool to remove cuticles, nip cuticles if needed 5. Do nail shape and buff (I buff with 240 grit after putting some talc on my nails), I buff skin around nails too5. 6. Nail prep - nail cleaner , allows following products to stick better 7. Nail polish or conditioner (I use essie smooth-e base and essie regular polish or the gel couture one or Manucurist active glow range of conditoners (there are bad boys, so long lasting!) 8. cuticle oil! It is so important! At night I also slugg regular vaseline over nails and cuticles, massage gently too. 9/ scrub and cream when feeling fancy :)
@@JennaHong Thank you! After removing gel manicure my nails were cracking in the middle like length-wise and took forever to restore them :) I learned how to be gentle with them and consistent and now totally loving doing my own nails (it gets better over time too!)
Your nails are beautiful and healthy, and seem to handle the buffing well, but I know most cannot handle that amount of loss to the layers of their nails. Something I'd recommend to those with more delicate nails is a ridge filler. If you want a super even surface without buffing, just apply a coat of ridge filler before polish and you'll be good to go!
I fell out of habit with doing my nails because...life. also, my nails would chip after a few days and i was tired of looking sloppy all the time with chipped polish lol. I wanna get back to wearing polish, so I'm about to take notes!!

oh Jenna u don’t know how much I needed this AHHH mine always chip after 1 day LOL
I hope this helps I swear the nail prep goes a long way 😭😭
How long do you wait between polish coats?
Usually just the time it takes to do the other hand!
