9 November 2020 marked 12 years since the death of Miriam Makeba, but her legacy lives on forever. Besides being a singer, songwriter, actress, United Nations goodwill ambassador and civil rights activist, Miriam Makeba's 1965 collaboration with Harry Belafonte won them a Grammy Award and also made her the first African recording artist to win this prestigious award.
Music from Africa was one of the musical focal points of the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1978. One of the highlights was the Dollar Brand Quartet with the iconic Abdullah Ibrahim as pianist performing at the Philharmonie (Berlin Philharmonic) in November 1978. As guest artist, legendary South African singer Miriam Makeba appeared in the second half of the concert. All songs but “Into Yam” were brand new compositions and performed for the first time at this concert. Abdullah Ibrahim said that they only had two days rehearsing before the concert. Dollar Brand Quartet with Abdullah Ibrahim perform on some of these recordings with Miriam and her band. One song in particular “Ntyiki” stands out as two of the world’s best African giants join forces with Miriam Makeba on vocals and Abdullah Ibrahim on Piano. A wonderful, never before released, and rare, recording of two of Africa’s biggest musical icons on one stage.
ABOUT MIRIAM MAKEBA:
Zenzile Miriam Makeba (4 March 1932 - 9 November 2008), nicknamed Mama Africa, was a Grammy Award-winning South African singer and civil rights activist. In the 1960s, she was the first artist from Africa to popularize African music around the world. She is best known for the song "Pata Pata", first recorded in 1957 and released in the U.S. in 1967. She recorded and toured with many popular artists, such as Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, and her former husband Hugh Masekela.
Makeba campaigned against the South African system of apartheid. The South African government responded by revoking her passport in 1960 and her citizenship and right of return in 1963. As the apartheid system crumbled she returned home for the first time in 1990.
Makeba died of a heart attack on 9 November 2008 after performing in a concert in Italy organised to support writer Roberto Saviano in his stand against the Camorra, a mafia-like organisation local to the region of Campania.
