Can You Make an Inner Tube Puncture Proof?

  • Tubes puncture easily on sharp impacts and tubeless with a foam insert is puncture proof, but has its own set of problems. So I thought, why not combine the two and make an inner tube with a tyre insert inside it, to have a mess free system that still offers impact protection?
    Let's find out if it actually works!

    AN tube.
    Recommendation: If you make a DIY foam insert, don't join it with plastic cable ties. Rather use something that can't do damage from the inside, like string or a hook-and-loop strap. Should be safer :)

    Another option may be to just pump expanding foam into the tube through the valve. Schraeder valves can be unscrewed to give pretty decent access. You would have to work the foam evenly around the tube before it sets, but it could work as a less invasive option.

    • @wakazuzu
      @wakazuzu 3 года назад

      The problem is it will stick all over the inside of the tube and won't form a solid rubber shape inside the tube. Also it's full of isocyanates and is actually pretty nasty stuff.

    • @peglor
      @peglor 3 года назад

      @@wakazuzu The aim of the protector is to stop the tube getting pinched, so provided the tube was lined with enough talcum powder to stop the foam sticking to it (Michelin tubes for example have very little talc in them, so you'd probably have to add more yourself on this brand, but others will have plenty of talc in them already), this could work quite well, if a resilient foam with relatively low expansion was chosen.
      The possibility of the expanding foam attacking the rubber chemically would be my biggest concern - and not doing it indoors or anywhere near soft furnishings :-P.

    One more addition/option is to add 30-60 ml of tubeless sealant inside the tube via the valve. This way, this setup will prevent from a nail or thorn puncture. You mentioned you wanted a mess free set up. This does have sealant involved but inside the tube which should be mess free.

    I have been tearing my tubes appart while trying to keep up with the young guns and their full suspension 29's while shredding on my full rigid 26 at the local trails and found your video. I tried to do this with PVC insullation and 2.125 tubes, but found out they are way too narrow, also since they had sealant, it became very messy very quick. Going to try with some 2.4's and keep updated for any future reference, for anyone else wanting to try this by themselves. But it seems like a very good idea, even better than my other option of going "Ghetto tubeless".

  • @Kefir0

    This is brilliant! Does it affect the springiness of the tire? I found that springiness can affect the riding quite a lot, especially the size of sidehops and gaps. Some tires are more "jumpy". Having an insert in the tube probably has some effect on this.

    Very good idea! However I use a tire insert (in reality it is a pool noodle cut in half) outside the tube. This "sandwich" has the rim, then the tube, then the insert, then the tire. This insert should be as thick as possible, but should fit inside the tire at the same time. I make the setup, pump my tire at around 2 bars and leave it so overnight. Then I adjust the pressure around 1.8 bar or 1.3 bar, depending on my bike tire size. Needs some experimenting, but I havent had any punctures ever since using it on rocky mtb descends with my hardtails. I even used it in 2,25 inch 26er tire with pressure around 1.8 bar.

    • @TheUselessTrials
      @TheUselessTrials  3 года назад +1

      I ran a system like that for over a year with some success, but could still get snakebites, because the foam gets compressed into a very thin layer after a while and stops providing protection. Let me know if you've found a type of foam that stays intact.

    • @SuperSarlatan
      @SuperSarlatan 3 года назад

      First off, use smaller sized tubes that fit easily, so you can go thicker.
      When first inserting the pool noodle I inflate it to around 2 bars. Overnight it droppes to around 1 bar. Then I never go above 1.7- 1.8 bars. I have tried bunny hopping yesterday and badly messed up a couple, I could even feel rim impacts, but still no punctures. I use 21 internal width rim and 2.35 inch Panaracer Cedric Garcia tire,790 g-s. I have it installed more the a year ago.
      I have bought the Tannis Armour, which is the "official version", but I still got snakebites.
      So pool noodle. Maybe getting something more rubbery would be a good idea, like NBR mats for pilates. There are thicker versions,like 1.5 cm-s and above. You could cut a long strip and even have two layers: one narrower in the middle and a slightly wider to provide additional sidewall protection.
