Ezzz! I've been looking forward to this, and while I'm seeing improvement with detailing your paint strokes, and thinning it sufficiently, I must say, your level of skill is beyond that of a novice. I've seen some miniature paintjobs by others that would elevate you to expert status, lul, so don't be overly critical of yourself! Those little imperfections add character, just like with people, how boring if everything ended up like the sample on the box, right? I'm currently restoring a Kenner figure with some minor paint touch-ups, as I picked up force ghost Anakin for the same price as Teebo, so I'm bouncing off the walls with excitement at the moment, hah.

Jared! My hero. Thank you for taking the time to write this. I cant believe your kind words about my painting, I never thought anyone would compliment me on that - I’m sorry for being so critical on myself, between us and anyone else who reads this (lol) I think I’m being critical and hard on myself to stop other people doing it to me first? Like trying to deflect negativity by being negative to myself first so people think “ah never mind, he’s already slated himself, I won’t now”
The imperfection do add character don’t they, I’m in that school of thought to! As you’ve probably seen from my toy videos haha.
Ohhhhh I love the thought of force ghost Anakin and touching up a Kenner figure! That’s so cool. Are you in our discord? There is a toy section where we all post our toys. It would be amazing to have you there if you’re not already?!

Have been thinking about doing my own videos in my warhammer journey, but not putting them on this channel, so I’ve created a separate channel just for warhammer, scratch builds and model stuff in general working on the first video for it, painting my little starter set using *only* the tools and paints that came with it and following the instructions from GW to the *letter* just to see what results I can get, having so much fun in the process :)

Just found your channel. Great to see you having a lot of fun with your new hobby. I started painting minis during the pandemic. And now I have 3D printers and all sorts of gear. My tips to improve:
    1. Have two jars of water. One to rinse your dirty brush, and a second to wash the clean brush fully.
    2. Consider using a fine tipped brush to paint the stitching on the clothes and their teeth e.g. a light cream colour. You could also dry brush these if you prefer being a lot faster (but slightly more messy/unpredictable). Definitely recommend looking up how to dry brush videos.
    3. Use a larger brush to add the Earthshade at the end (you can mop up excess Earthshade easily with a larger brush.
    4. Add some final details after the Earthshade (brightest metal areas, a thin layer of paint on the brightest areas of skin etc)
You did amazing for your second mini though. Thanks for sharing your hobby with us!

This is very neat seeing someone get in on the hobby for the first time! I am looking forward to seeing more and more progress from you. Its such a joy to see that spark of just starting in a hobby!
I would love to share a few tips about painting that I have learned that I hope can be helpful. (sorry if this might be an overload of info)
-Don't be afraid of using a larger brush! the brush tip matters more than the overall size of the brush. Larger brushes can help with detail as well, they can hold paint for longer, so you can paint on longer without needing to re-load your brush so often. Not to mention Larger brushes will speed up painting larger surfaces as well!
-For brush tips, you can get your brush to a finer point by giving it a small roll in your fingers as you pull it out of the paint, it'll bring the bristles to a closer point than just a horizontal swipe
-Thinning paints is indeed a bit of trial and error, but you will get a feel for it as you get more experienced. You were right in that it depends on what application you are using the paint for, as well as the individual formulas of each color will change how much you'll need to thin it.
-For more steady hands, you can try and hold your wrists together while going in for details, it makes a world of difference.
-I'd also recommend getting a small desk lamp to help light up the mini, especially if you are painting far away from natural light or later in the evening. Possibly also a craftboard/cutting mat, would hate to see that table ruined by some spilled paint.
-If you make a mistake with a misplaced brushstroke, if you are quick you can fix it! just grab a 2nd clean brush, get it nice and wet, and just wipe and swirl away the misplaced paint (just make sure the layer underneath is properly dry) you may need to repeat this process once or twice if you got a ton of paint on there, but if you are quick enough you'll never notice there even was the wrong color on there.
-I'd also recommend washing your brush thoroughly after using metallic paints, or getting a dedicated brush for them. The reflective bits that are in the paint can get stuck in the ferrule and splay the brush tip out rather quickly if not washed enough.
-For a purchasing tip: Don't feel like you need to buy all GW branded stuff. Tools from more generic brands can be half the price for the same quality, and the hobby police won't come knocking if you use some Citadel paint and say, Army Painter paint on the same mini. For Primer I have really been enjoying colourforge, they have a lot of near if not perfect matches to Citadel colors. You can also just go to your local hardware store and buy some bog-standard spray primer from there and they'll work pretty much just as fine (just slightly thicker formula than dedicated painting primers, so go a little light on em if you do grab them)

    Just some feedback and tips.
-The GW mould line remover really can't compare to a cheap hobby knife as its too thick to fit in small gaps. I find its fine to remove lines post priming. Keeping a small bottle of primer on hand is also pretty useful, especially if the spray prime missed any bits.
-If you get paint where you don't want it. Use a clean wet brush to the side to wipe it away. Though you don't really have to worry when basecoating.
-I think the model needs a highlight pass though to really be considered done. Take your basecoat of green and add a little yellow and white and with the brown and add white or light grey. Then you can highlight in one of two ways. Using a small brush and a thick milk like consistency target any raised areas(tops of feet, edges of ear, the pectoral muscles) or with the robe target the edges of the cloth. You can also go the drybrush route.. using a small makeup brush, dip the paint lightly, coat it everywhere and then rub it over the pallet till there is almost no paint coming off. Then lightly hit the relevant raised areas of the model back and forth, the effect should look subtle after one pass and build up over a couple passes, then when there is basically no paint coming off switch to a circular motion and push in more to the model.. this will smooth out the paint you just put down.
Those two techniques are certainly the most useful for taking a 5/10 model up to a 7. Going beyond that there is diminishing returns from effort. to get an 8/10 paint job multiple layers building up the highlight and shadows are required and painting every detail like the rivets in the cloth, the teeth the toenails etc. A 10/10 paint job(like golden demon winners) requires understanding of (non metallic metal)reflections and Object source lighting.. Hours upon hours going back and forth building transitions and a technique called stipple glazing where you lightly dot a glaze consistency to build up subtle texture on cloth and skin. Speed painting(drybrushing and contrast paint focus) can get you a good looking model in under an hour, proper layering and highlighting is a few hours work and competition pieces can take weeks.
Lastly you want to protect your models. Unvarnished simply touching the model can wear off paint(unless its metallic). For tabletop gaming purposes, covering in a gloss varnish and then a Matt varnish is recommended and they can take some punishment. If it's for just display then you can get away with just the Matt/Satin Varnish. Though be aware varnish can ruin the effect of mettalics so either paint them as the last step or masking them off with blue tac before spraying.

It’s the man, the myth, the Warhammer encyclopaedia of knowledge, Blake has entered the chat!
Some really useful tips as ever in here thank you! I hadn’t thought about using a clean wet brush to get rid of unwanted paint, that would 100% save a lot of time. I will always have one ready to pick up in future.
Also that’s good to know about the mould line remover, I did actually scratch one off with my finger nail once. It just completely vanished. I don’t know if that’s frowned upon in the community but it seemed to work on that occasion 😂
At the moment I will be looking at the tips you gave me to try and achieve a figure above 5/10 for sure, I think it would be too ambitious and unrealistic for me to achieve anything higher at the moment. I’m too new and raw, i can’t even master the most basic of skills yet, I’m absolutely no way near your level and I’m not sure I ever will be, because of my RUclips channel and working full time it means at this moment in time I’m unable to practise as much as I’d like or really put in the hours. But slowly and gradually over the years, I hope to see at least some improvements. It’s been really fun so far!
Especially with Jedi master level painters like you giving me guidance. It’s great having people like you to ask questions to!
I really want these first figures to stand the test of time, so a varnish finish sounds like a really good idea. I want them to be protected because the goal would be to display these first original figures and then I can hopefully look at them and think to myself “I’ve come a long way since then!”
Thank you my man, really appreciate the tips. There is a couple I’m going to put into practise straight away 💪🏼 appreciate having you here. Thanks for watching!

ahh YT doesn't like me sharing links. I was gonna say AK interactive Matt varnish is a pretty economical choice to start with. Like primer, warm can under hot water, shake well and couple quick sprays side to side and never directly. Varnish is great, not just for protection but it gets rid of glossiness from washes and hides mistakes. I still keep my first mini on my desk as a reference for progress.. there are posts on /minipainting on reddit of guys going from 3/10 paint jobs to 10/10 in 2 years with solid practice. I'm no master yet.. but I'm getting there, everyone's got their own journey.

    So much of painting neat little details is having brush control... That comes with time. That being said, I can see some things you can do to help with that...}
    1) Hold your brush like a pencil, and close to the brush head, this will help you with controlling your brush strokes.
    2) You can rest your hands against the table or your elbows, then you can lean your brush hand against the one holding the miniature factually making a triangle, this will minimize any unwanted movement.
    3) you can use your little finger on your brush hand as a antenna, put it up against the model you are painting and only use your other fingers to move your brush. This will further increase your accuracy.
Take it from someone with 30 yrs in the painting game, you will never stop making mistakes, but you will become very good at covering them up. You are doing really well, keep on improving, its part of the fun and WELCOME TO THE HOBBY!

Hello buddy! Aw thank you so much, it’s an honour to have someone with so much experience take the time to give me some advice. It really is greatly appreciated. And thank you for welcoming me to the hobby.
I’ve added your tips straight to my notes page and thank you so much for reading the room, I appreciate every bit of advice I get, but some advice has been really overwhelming because I’m new and don’t understand what it all means. But yours is just perfect for my level and there is some stuff there that I can already use.
Again, I appreciate you for taking the time to do that. Have an amazing weekend ❤️

I'm enjoying watching the joy of discovering new little tricks. Nice to see someone just enjoying the process. Tip for thinning paints. It should be the consistency of milk and with acrylics you don't need much water. test the flow on the back of your hand until you're happy with it. And different paints behave differently. Some need a little more water, and some less.

Keep with this outlook of trying different improvements with every project (whether that be 1 mini or more) or maybe following a specific tutorial and you'll look back at this army a year from now and just be astounded with your progress.

You may want to look into paint agitators. These are steel ball bearings that help with consistency and reduce the amount of time you need to shake your paints. Be careful if you decide to use them, though, as an ordinary ball bearing not made for paint will corrode. They are reusable once the paint pot is empty, too! A 100-pack should last you a lifetime unless your paint collection explodes...

Brilliant. Don't worry too much on how much to thin the paint. It varies from brand to brand, between different colours within a brand, and what actual effect/stage you are doing. For now, just 'some' water is fine. You will definitely start to get a feel for it.

I also get into a perfectionist mentality when painting but, honestly, if I make little mistakes that may not be super obvious to anyone else I’ll just leave the mistake instead of tidying up. Especially if it’s just a cheap unit that’s going to die first turn anyway.
I can’t be bothered to spend the time fixing every little mistake. I have waaaay too much unpainted plastic to have that much care 😂
