    I have to laugh, you guys talk about being “minimalistic” then talk about Starbucks, cars etc.😂😂😂 On my travels to the Philippines, I’m constantly amazed at westerners, especially Americans, comparing their native country to the Philippines, then complaining. I travel there to enjoy the food, the people, the culture, not to go and eat at Maccas (McDonalds to you Americans) or stay in a five star motel. When I relocate to the Philippines, I plan to not live like a westerner but to embrace the Philippine lifestyle. I look at Calvin from Sunshine Shoulders and think that is more my style, living simply and in a small town, like San Carlos. Each to their own. 🇦🇺😎

      Because there are expats (not all) thinks that they could live here like a king. There are old men foreigners who would love to flaunt their money so they could flirt with the local women younger than them, just to lose everything and ending up being beggars. Be careful with your money for there are gold diggers also here in PH.

    When I moved to the Philippines I had no idea of where I would live, my main reason for coming was to find a wife. Now 9 years later I have a good understanding of what would be the ideal place for someone like me to live. I traveled extensively for the first 3 years all over the Philippines, I look back now, and what a great time it was, I recommend for anyone who comes here to do that. I am now married 5 years, I live in Angeles my wife is a Kapampangan. Angeles City and Clark are ideal towns for expats to live in, it has all the food from back home, there is an international airport, the infrastructure here is good and depending on what Barangay you live in, the traffic is good , no brown outs, the hospitals are excellent . I could go on the benefits of living here over other places in the Philippines, the only thing Angeles doesn't have is beaches , its an inland city, but having the airport gives you access to all the main islands and I have a car and there are some incredibly beautiful places I can drive to on Luzon.

    I love expat chat. I am retired in Thailand and many of the issues are the same.
    I made three 1 month trips here before realizing that this is where I wanted to be AND I had a friend who had come here before me. Arriving and taking short term accommodations and planning to spend months or a year travailing around is a great plan. Also, many Americans go through life thinking that owning a home is the ultimate life goal. You definitely should stay away buying anything or using that as a criteria for where you want to be. They economics of living in a developing country is very different. Don’t tie yourself down for a while.
    I also sold everything I owned and arrived with two suitcases. I can’t tell you how liberating that is. I love not owning a house or a car. In my case, I am loving the experience of living in a city, Bangkok, for the first time. I don’t regret my materialist past life in America but I’ve done that and it is time to move on and live life from a different perspective.
    In short: Southeast Asian women are just more feminine. For us older guys is also a blast from the past. It helps make life here somewhat familiar.
    The cost of living is overall less expensive. This is especially true for housing which is most people’s biggest expense. How cheap will depend on where you are coming from as much as where you go. It is probably going to be more expensive than you think if your only research is internet research. It will be more expensive if you also don’t compromise your current lifestyle and take advantage of some of the lifestyle of your adopted country. It is not so much about better or worse but about something different. You can’t go to a foreign country and expect to transplant every aspect of your home country.
    Retirement is not like vacation. Think about who you are before deciding anything. I retired 5 years before moving abroad. My advice is to adjust to retirement before other dramatic life changes but everyone needs to do what they need to do.

    I completely agree with you guys, minimalism is the way to go. When I put my house on sale in Toronto 5 years ago, and did the clean up, that's when I realized how much stuff I acquired over the years that I didn't need, more so, even unpacked. I feel much better now living only with the basic & uncluttered life, and with a healthier bank account to boot.

    Hello Gio!
    I am a new subscriber to both you and Paul & Paul2 both their women Mia & Mae, Sunshine, Pea, BlackPhilipino, and few others there in the Philippines. We currently have lived at BGC since 2018 although I have been locked out of the country since March 2020. Although Fort Bonifacio Global City BGC is a very nice city unfortunately it's missing the most important component the beach. I was born in Tampa Florida and spent most of my life on a lovely tropical island Okinawa Japan retired military (51 Young ).
    Please remember our names "Maylene & Michael Arnold" Because as soon as the country opens up we are relocating to Mactan New Town as well! We will all be neighbors, we are very peaceful and like to keep a low profile mostly just living a healthy life. We choose to retire there in the Philippines for the fact living in a fancy house driving a fancy car has no meaning in our lives. It would be more meaning full to be living in an area where you can lift and help others out of poverty. An act of kindness goes a long way brother.
    Thanks to all you bloggers for sharing all the intel and you all keep up these good videos!

    You are so right about minimalism. The first time I went overseas was to the Philippines, a little dive resort near Dumaguete, Monarch Sands, then run by an expat American Ron and his asawa. I was struck by the simplicity of the people, the very little they had but it seemed family and community was of great importance. When I got back home to Canberra, Australia, I was overwhelmed by the commercialism, especially in the malls. From that first visit, I have planned to one day relocate to the Philippines. I have since been to the Philippines 5 or 6 times now, from Puerto Princesa, El Nido, Port Barton, San Vicente, Dumaguete, Sipalay, Dauin, Bacolod, Quezon City, Quezon in Palawan and of course Boracay.

Retiring in the Philippines is great but doing your homework is always a key to be able to understand how things work in Philippines. Learn the cultures. How and why is always the key questions. Just watched this vlog and subscribed. I wanted to share my thoughts in retiring in Philippines with my caucasian husband.
    Born and raised in the island (Batangas) lived and worked in California for 30 years. My husband is ecstatic in retiring in the Philippines a few years from now (3-5 years max) sell house in CA and buy a condo in BGC (currently in process) we decided and chose to live in the city because of the healthcare convenience, we can catch a flight to any nearby islands whenever we want to, also the night life and all the convenience you would want and need readily in a heart beat right outside our doorstep, malls downstairs and a 2 hour drive to my province if we want a feel of the island life.
    I also wanted to add, to those who wanted to retire in the Philippines, they can also check out condos in Manila, Makati, BGC and get all the convenience and still have access to go to the islands of their choice at anytime.
    Thank you for the nice enlightening retirement discussion, am sure it sort of helped some of those looking for answers.

I’ll probably base my self somewhere around Cebu City, as it’s the place I know best, and it’s easy to travel around from there, with the airport, and sea ports. To put things in context, when they say it is cheaper in the Philippines they mean when you adapt to the local lifestyle--just like you would normally do had you gone to any other country like Japan, Russia, Germany, or Mexico. You go to any country and you insist on eating and living the way you are used to in the States, then you will pay a premium for it. So Gio, if you want your daily fix from Starbucks, it's gonna cost you.

      @lesmorosi That's probably true as the only coffee that the filipinos usually use is instant coffee, even the hotels there have instant coffee. We always send a large container of Folders or Eight O'Clock coffee to my filipina wifes family in balikbayan boxes. Just a side note; drink my coffee black and once tried a cup of black coffee at Starbucks to see what the fuss was about. It was nothing special and have not been back there ever since!

    Interesting to hear your perspective, guys. I was born and raised in the Philippines but have lived in Hawaii longer than in the Philippines now. Have been living comfortably in Hawaii (not that we're well off but we count our blessings) but once in a while we think of possibly retiring in the Philippines that's why I'm interested to hear your take about your own experiences there. I love nature but only on vacations so, should we decide to retire there, we're looking at BGC, Quezon City, Subic, and Bulacan. I've been taken to and treated in Makati Med on my last vacation there and it felt like I was still in the US...the service was very good (I'm an RN so I know) and everybody spoke in English (not for me but for my daughter who doesn't speak Tagalog and was very worried about me). Wish you all well and who knows, I might also enjoy the Philippines in a couple of years.

    The bottom line is we as older Westerners are taking advantage of the economic disparity between the developing Philippines and the well-developed U.S.A. We also exploit - to some extent the Filipina's ability to be with an older man, sometimes even older than her Father! The physical beauty of many Filipinas, and our ability sometimes to get a woman much younger and even much better looking than we are. This is the reality underneath all of the "other ways" we describe "retiring" in a place like Thailand or the Philippines. In the future, assuming there will be less poverty in countries like the Philippines these opportunities will probably be much less common. We may be at - or near the end of an Era.

Your stay in the Philippines is contributing to the livelihood of Filipinos out there. I've travelled to so many provinces and cities in the Philippines. For retirement, i pick Duma, Cebu and Clark. Once the pandemic is over, I'll be travelling to IloIlo City because I haven't visited the province yet. According to my research, it could be even better than Dumaguete. :)

  • @coastalmax
    @coastalmax 3 года назад +4

    If a person is truly going into retirement versus being a digital nomad or "semi-retired", then the option is very clear for most of those guys. Cebu is very expensive. The normal rents when there isn't a pandemic are P30,000 + P5,000 parking for a STUDIO apartment 22sqm - 36sqm. Of course I'm referring to the premier areas like IT Park, Alaya Mall area, and Mactan Newtown.
    For that same money in the first year, a retired guy who can live outside of the expat hubs can find a 2/1 apartment that is 80 sqm for P7,500/month. It will require that guy buys TVs, refrigerators, air con units, sofas, beds, curtains, etc. He may even have to buy a western toilet, water heater, and washing machine. But I did a full budget on it and the break even is about 13 months versus the guy living in Cebu in a studio apartment.
    But after those 13 months pass, the retired guy who sticks to that P7,500 2/1 townhome/apartment will save P27.500/month over the guy living in Cebu or Makati in one of those furnished studio apartments. And for those type of guys, that is a savings of $575/month and they have everything they want (much which can be resold later if they want to move). They have 2 Midea 1.0 hp inverter split air cons, 2 LG 4K 50" smart HDTVs, a steel bedframe with a pillow top mattress, curtains, all kitchen appliances including an inverter Panasonic 10 CF refrigerator. And a Sharp washing machine with spin cycle. So essentially for the same costs for the first 12-13 months, the retired guy living in a more Filipino area of his choosing that is outside the normal expat hotspots can have more space and a place furnished exactly how he wants it. And that cost savings for 13 months is enough to pay for all those appliances & furnishings. And after that, that guy save $575/month over the guy who lives in Cebu at Mactan Newton, IT Park, or Alaya Mall area. And trust me, I price out everything from deadbolts to rice cookers to curtain rods to pillow top mattresses on Shopee & Lazada and various stores like CitiHardware including shipping/delivery/installation costs.
    So for the guys who are a bit older and are seriously contemplating retiring (the topic of this video), for them that is the logical path to living a good life, furnishing their place exactly in a manner that makes them comfortable, and saving money each month. For the younger guys (like me) who want to be minimalist and hop from place to place, clearly we need to spend more money to be more mobile. But eventually we'll also need to settle down somewhere. But this video was about retiring to the Philippines.
    So for retired guys, the most important first step is to know (or find out) exactly where you want to live. If you can find a community that isn't an expat haven, then you'll most likely have zero issues finding a nice 2/1 apartment or condo for P7,500 in 75% of the country. Just don't try finding that in Cebu, Makati, or Manila. But you will be able to find that in most places if you put boots on the ground and don't search online.

    • @MajorKanoyStorm
      @MajorKanoyStorm 3 года назад +1

      I agree that being mobile will cost more. The majority of men from the USA will be able to live a nice life in the Philippines for 1000 usd per month. Some can be happy on 500 usd per month, and some will not be happy on 3000 usd per month. Every individual is different. But I think that if someone will be retiring on just social security. Then the Philippines or S.E. Asia in general, is a great place to retire.

    Paul is right on the money with Filipina women. If you're a foreigner, there is no interview...the Filipina women see you as a jackpot financially and genetically. When it comes to cost of living, one thing you guys have going against you is when the locals see you, and they think money right away. I get a local to get stuff done for me at local prices. Make friends with a local that you can trust and pay them to do stuff for you like run errands or other stuff. Put them on a $50 a month retainer if you have to and they will run whatever errands you want or handle whatever business for you. If your wife is Filipina, have her negotiate stuff for you while you remain out of sight. If they see white dude, they're like, this guy's got money. My folks pay a local to do all sorts of stuff for them, even fix stuff around their condo and house sit their condo or run errands or do paperwork for them. A maid is like $100 - $150 a month and they will do everything for you around the house and even run errands, buy groceries, etc. If you find one that you can trust, then they are worth their weight in gold. The other thing is that most Filipinos tend to be loyal employees. If you do things like bring them some gifts or "pasalubong" during birthdays, holidays, or when you get back from traveling overseas, they value that. It's like relationship brownie points towards loyalty. Bottomline, is if they see that you take care of them, they will take really good care of you. You have to understand the culture and learn how to navigate it with the locals.

They can operate u even in the emergency room since they have the best tools and the best doctors in the Philippines. They are the elites of all the hospitals in the whole Philippines. My Sister, brother in law and my Father all had sugeries at Asian Hospital (Removal of thyroid gland, Aortic Aneurysm, and Heart Operation). I recomment Daang Hari in Alabang (the villages there or Southwoods in San Pedro laguna or even Nuvali/Paseo Sta Rosa Laguna and u can go to Tagaytay or Beaches in Batangas during weekends for fresh air and farm life, u could also build a business somewhere in Tagaytay City (tourist destination in Luzon) one of the most popular in the Philippines which is near Nasugbu Batangas, Calatagan, Lemery but preferrably choose the white beaches to go to for some fresh air and the freshest seafood from their local market near the beaches or even in the beach itself where local fishermen sell u a fresh newly caught big fishes to grill beside the beach.

Right now I am guilty of just listening to vloggers. We decided to take a vacation to Davao City for a month, mainly to experience the area and compare it with that of the videos viewed, with the idea of becoming an ex-pat. At our ages now, hospitals and quality of medicine plays a factor. Beaches, shopping and restaurants are points of interest. Might hop on a plane and take the 'little over an hour' flight to Valencia. And this might not be our only visit before making that big decision to move. So the only way to get there from Manila is by bus then a ferry, pretty much will take a whole day..but u can look at it as a way to experience the culture. Welcome to the Philippines! Boac and Santa Cruz are very clean provincial cities, u will not see a single fast-food chain, no Jollibees or Mickey Dees! The east side of the island has calm clear waters like a bay as it is blocked by the southern end of Luzon from the Pacific ocean, the northwest of the island is exposed to the south China sea. I'm looking forward to the warm weather and having to no longer work 12 hour graveyard shifts and deal with the drama here in the states. Roosters? No problem!, Dogs barking? Turn up the music! Friendly people? Can't wait! My $1000 will go much farther there than here. We are currently paying $700 per month rent here, a car and car insurance is a must and that don't leave much for food if I stay here once I retire.

    Gio, Paul and Sean: Interesting discussion. I believe as I am a older military veteran age 58, I would need to live in Cebu and Manila. Gio, you being a younger military veteran as well. Paul being young. The times in your life is still really healthy and primetime. So both of you basically living anywhere in the Philippines is great for you. I know Sean, having a age similar to me, most likely feel very comfortable living in Cebu now. Finally, Paul mention international Airports at of course Manila and Cebu, is a game fixer for me to retire in one of those two (2) great cities in the Philippines. Gio, you are on point with Guam being close ass our American Territory. Thanks for this great discussion with all three (3) gentlemen. This really helps us future retirees too.

    Don’t lump all Filipina women. You haven’t been exposed to upper middle class ladies who are highly educated. So not all foreigners to them are prized catch.

    • @ppac300
      @ppac300 3 года назад +5

      True. I really get a chuckle whenever white men think all Filipina like white men when all they have been exposed to are girls at the lower economic echelon. It’s usually Filipinas from poorer economic backgrounds, with not much education that go after western men. When they go up the ladder, it’s a whole different level. There’s even a certain degree of stigma attached to Filipinas married to foreigners because of this reality. But I guess white men really like to pay themselves in the back.

    Keep in mind I never watched RUclips until I had been here over a year. I just came here to be with Ne 4 yrs. ago. I had sent her to Bohol where she is from to wait on me, because her friends were calling her a fool for trusting me. So, when I got here, we lived in Bohol. We moved to Davao because the daughter she left in charge of her business was about to have a baby, I like it here better than in Bohol, Great video.

    I've lived in Phuket Thailand for 4 years now and have visited the Philippines on several occasions when on vacation with my filipina gf while working in Dubai. I had recently planned to make a move to Dumaguete mainly due to watching all of the Gio, Paul and the other Paul videos and as Paul said you become comfortable with the idea of living in Dumaguete after watching many RUclips vids, my plans to move to Dumaguete was stopped due to the Covid outbreak and actually gave me the opportunity to dig deeper into the prospect of living in the Philippines. After careful consideration I've opted to remain in Phuket, the reasons are many but the main points are: Cost of living in Phuket is much less (my budget is $800 per mo for a high standard lifestyle) Health care quality is much better here and cost is much lower in Phuket, Thai food overall is much better than Filipino food and a very important point is speaking to the Filipinos living in Phuket, their preference is to live in Thailand not the Philippines for the reasons mentioned and many other reasons, this in itself says volumes about life in Thailand versus the Philippines as they have stated crime in Phuket is almost non-existent no Barb wire fences, no bars on the windows people leave their houses unlocked, whereas crime in the Philippines is rampant much like living in Africa (I lived in Kenya 15 yrs) and the cost of living in Thailand is much less. Believe it or not, the Thai women are much nicer than the Filipino women (I've dated both) I find Filipino women can have a sharp tongue, crab mentality and tampo are unattractive personality traits that I would not tolerate and I don't find in Thai culture, I've compared both countries in depth and these are my findings. Just my two bits...

      Crimes is rampant in Philippines as much as Africa? LOL! You made me laugh duh! Fyi, crime in Philippines is very low compared to other countries in Asia and crimes in Philippines is not rampant. Fyi, Philippines is very safe and peaceful country to visit and to live...In Thailand i heard even in Thai airport in taxi area crime is happening ok? But sorry to say to you because there have so many many foreign expats are very happy to their Filipjna wives. Cost is less in Thailand? I dont think so, because there have one Foreign blogger who are living permanently in the Philippines said that its much cheaper to Philippines than Thailand because he said that when he is in Thailand he bought a burger in Burger King in Thailand and it cost at high at 11 USDollars while here in the Philippines it only cost 3.5 USDolars So which country is cheaper? What happened to your past lovelife will not happening to other foreign expats so dont Generalized.

    Marvelous job on the topic of which cities to see, be a minimalist and do the domestic travel and find the city that fits you the best
    Caygan de oro, Davao, etc etc etc if you can list the 10 smaller cities to consider which has been overlooked.
    I've been to the island of Marinduque and it's very modest, quiet but a little to quiet for me but beach resorts like Santa Cruz resort , and White Sands is super modern

    An early retirement is the premier sign of success. Some guys are facing towards retirement by 25 or 30. I happen to be one of them 😌 although I missed my goal by two years and had to retire at the ripe old age of 32. So, I guess for the next 45 years I'll browse RUclips and listen to vlogs about retirement. Ahhh a charmed life!

    Don't wait yourself to retire before coming to the Philippines. You have to experience how wonderful it is to live different parts of the Philippines without worrying your health because you can still enjoy your travel and be able to choose which is the best place for you to live when it's your time to retire. One thing I'm sure you will love the Filipinos are, they're easy to approach or talk to. Even you just met and talk, they'll smile and laughs with you all the way.

    When you guys started talking about things to impress others, Hypergamy, and then Gio talked about "interview dates" it really hurt my heart. Those are the things I can't stand here. People, especially women, also ask next "What do you do?" to judge your worth to them.

    I think it will help a ton (specially on your budget) if a foreigner can be able to adjust to eating healthy tropical fruits and vegetable dish (which pretty much cost next to nothing) or getting use to buying at the local wetmarket which I very much enjoy prior to the pandemic because of the liveliness in it.. it may look chaotic but I recommend just setting half of your brain as an observer and you might just find a speck of gold... Bask in the culture. Filipinos have a very rich culture and traditions that are slowly fading away as generations change (like Santacrusan, "saying mano po", yearly fiesta, religous parade, eating local traditional delicacies etc). You may find it odd but that's what "WE" HUMANS are... it just got forgotten a long time ago back in the west with the advent of technology and with the continous urge of getting efficient. As a Filipino who's born in the 80's I have observed things are SLOWLY improving in the Philippines and I'm glad it is at a slow phase. Kinda like saying "RELAAAAX... be HUMBLE and enjoy the ride and maybe have a bit of FAITH and a good sense HUMANITY as you go along"... Time,Humanity,Faith,Death... oh no you wont reborn or live forever
