- Air quality in New York was pretty bad, so it was best we limited our time outside. Even with only 5 minutes to look for stuff we found 7 different snakes spanning 3 different species. It's pretty incredible how much wildlife was in this pocket right at our Airbnb
What we saw:
Common Garter Snake: Thamnophis sirtalis
Ring-necked Snake: Diadophis punctatus
Dekay's Brownsnake: Storeria dekayi
And as always, if you want to learn how to identify what you see in the field, check out Schechter Natural History's Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians.

Man, you booked the right Airbnb. Looking out of the window to find curled-up snakes. Quad flip, nice. If I extrapolate, that could have been another 77 snakes if you would have herped an entire 60 minutes.
I like that math. We're not entirely sure how many snakes were around the house but I think we saw at least 12 individuals during our stay. Mostly additional garters but a couple ring-necks added to the count as well.
That was fun, and gives me ideas on where I can do the same thing!
Cool. Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you see a lot
