    One of the big misconceptions is that a muffler will quiet the generator. Alot of the noise actually comes from the vibrations and working of the engine itself and not the exhaust noise. Hence alot of people build an insulated (and vented) box to surround the generator and absorb these engine noises. The nice Honda generators have done an excellent job of dampening this engine noise of their generators. One of the benefits of this is that you aren't announcing to thieves that you have a generator to steal with generator noise.

    Brilliant story telling perfectly choreographed with engaging video! I had never heard of the subculture of people “living” on the water in and around Berlin. Although it is beyond the scope of “your first boat” it would be fascinating to learn more about the individuals and their floating lives in Berlin. I thought your opening was wonderful; lulling your audience with familiar sounding classical music and beautiful sunsets, a lone swan happily paddling by and stunning views out your windows as the vessel lazily swings around her moorings. Then without over-dramatizing anything the music changes as the images shift to wind driven rain, hail piling up against the window and other chill inducing pictures that lead one to consider how one actually stays warm and comfortable in a cold steel vessel moored in frigid water under such conditions. Perhaps among your many talents you are already an accomplished producer, your work certainly seems that way. Thank you for enriching our lives by sharing yours.

    I've not watched all your videos, but have enjoyed this one.
    - Yes, "sea legs" and "land legs" will cause some discomfort when spending prolonged time either on land or on the boat. Even as an "old salt" I feel the effects!
    - Generally, the dedicated pleasure boating community does look out for each other. I've seen great examples of this many times over the decades.
    - Armaflex is great stuff! I know at least one other youtube contributor who has used it on his sailboat for insulating purposes and is very pleased with it. I've attached some on the underside of the rear deck on my boat to lower heat and noise levels from the engine room below. Very pleased with it.

      It only helps a little against noise that is transported by the air! ( in german "Luftschall") The "major" noise is transported by the hull an all the materials in the inside. ( in german "Körperschall") To avoid these noises, you have to make everything heavier and try to make it stop swinging.

    When working with foam products it is a good idea to have an electric carving knife in your tool box. Electric knifes work very well to cut rounded corners or round holes in your and leave a very nice finished curve. They also work to thin the edges of the foam where it requires a tapered edge and you can actually carve foam into specific shapes.

    Acoustic volume (loudness) of both air-compressors and portable generators are controlled by two factors...exhaust AND intake. Everyone chases 'quiet' by adding longer pipes or larger mufflers on combustion engines, but few realize that the air-intake ALSO contributes to volume! If you add a 'long-intake-duct' with sufficent baffling, you can achieve up to 10-db of volume reduction! Simply remove the stock 'air cleaner and intake', fabricate a longer intake pipe, add a smaller 'muffler' at the end (remembering to accommodate your filtration media), and you will have a MUCH QUIETER generator! In shop air compressors, this is often done with long-runs of pipe, to achieve maximum volume reduction.

    I wouldn't worry about glueing the seems, but more about the ribs on the hull and roof that will be beautifull (thats sarcasm) cold bridges. When winter hits those ribs wil have tons of condens.

    • @wellcraft19
      @wellcraft19 3 года назад +3

      Gluing the seams is still very important to ensure moisture is not allowed to enter and get trapped behind the insulation sheets.
      But fully agree, those ribs will lead to tons of condensation. Always an issue in boats, and much more so in steel vessels. A a good heat source combined with a really good dehumidifier can save the day to a certain extent.

    Hi the progress is looking great. Have you considered adding a few solar panels and a submergible turbine (there are a few cheap river options you could throw off the side of your boat when at an anchorage). if you add on a few mix energy options to your Victron system you'll use the generator less. Take care D

    As before, very impressed over progress and dedication to this vessel!
    You might not have the option (spring time in Berlin - or if recorded way earlier, winter...) but when applying insulation towards a metal hull, it is always best to do it on sunny warm days. Why? As you already know, enclosing the metal and in the process capturing humidity between metal and insulation can lead to horribly bad corrosion (out of sight). When insulating while it is warm, the metal being warmer than the surrounding air, in most cases removes the risk having any condensation on the metal. And while applying the foam, it is super important to ensure that you really get the adhesive to adhere all over so there are no bubbles behind where moisture inevitably will collect over time.
    That said, a metal vessel is likely more "healthy" (just like a house) with the structure exposed and can "breathe", not closed in by insulation. But as we all know, it is not practical for comfort nor for the finances when it comes to heating the enclosed space. Insulation is needed compromise.

    • @ELCADAROSA
      @ELCADAROSA 3 года назад +2

      As mentioned in the video, their generator runs on diesel, so there is almost no possibility of fumes reaching the LEL to cause an explosion.
      But other safety & health concerns should be noted, particularly Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2). Sufficient ventilation and alarm sensors should mitigate these.

    Hello another great video. Excellent job with the Armaflex. However I think you need to also insulate the structural ribs and beams, studs etc or they will conduct cold well and cool your environment inside. At the moment you still have a thermal bridge you must insult all outside contact with the internal environment. Think external temperature conduction. Cold conduction cooling and moisture condensation.

    • @popuptoaster
      @popuptoaster 3 года назад +4

      I think a lot depends on the internal structure of the boat, plus how much internal space you are willing to lose, for instance I have 75mm of insulation simply because the internal ribs were 70mm and I wanted to cover them completely, It's fairly easy to heat a space as small as this, I often have to have the windows and hatches open even when the log burner is turned right down low as it gets to hot even in the middle of winter.

      but it helps against direct condensation on the hull (you will have this up and below the waterline depending on the weather conditions), thats worth a lot and good for dry bilges.

      @@AlexanderStielau Da die Spanten aber nicht gedämmt wurden gibt es (zumindest bis jetzt noch) eine sogenannte Kältebrücke, welche wiederrum Kondensation begünstigt! Bleibt das so, wird es nichts mit einer trockenen Bilge! Warten wir das nächste Video mal ab.

    Curious how you are going to deal with all the exposed frame members which will drip condensation etc.? Especially if you are gone and are not heating the boat. Boats are all about down sizing and efficient storage. A storage locker ashore isn't a bad idea if you are home porting somewhere.
