I dunno, I'm a boy and I had a (male) friend whose parents bought him a cooking set. I loved that thing, and so did he. My parents also bought me a cabbage patch doll when my brother was conceived because I apparently complained about not having a baby of my own to look after like my Mom now had. Today, I am a terrible cook, a bad house keeper, and I dislike babies tremendously. I don't think the toys you give your kids really has an effect on how they wind up growing up. Just give them what they are interested in (within your budget obviously) and the kids will sort themselves out as they experience new things.

mitchki Most kids are massively impacted by what toys they get. It's the mindset of "this is a girls/boys toy" that messes them up. Like you said, they should just get whatever toy they want so they realise they have a choice.

I had this game when i was young and it is just barbie running around in a black and green world without all the scenery teaching you the controls to jump over the holes and avoid the quicksand etc.

Yes, there actually *is* a pregnant Barbie doll. Although, it's technically Barbie's friend Midge. The pregnant belly is actually separate from the main doll and held on by magnets. Removing the pregnant belly allows you to "deliver" the baby. No cord cutting, no pain, no crying/screaming, no nothing. But it's still a very disturbing toy.

Also in response to Arin's joke about the Barbie who wets herself - I actually had a Kelly (Barbie's little sister) doll when I was like 4 years old who came with a toilet, and it was a potty training doll. She had a little bottle you could fill with water to feed her, and there was a hole in the bare spot where her vag would be, and you sat her down on the toilet and pressed on her belly and she would "pee" the water out. It was actually a thing.

to be fair alongside the domestic and stereotypically feminine things that barbie dolls were themed with, they also made pilot barbies, film director barbies, astronaut barbies, president barbies, explorer barbies, doctor barbies, engineer barbies etc they did make a big range of barbies that showed girls that they can get careers in things even if they aren't traditionally feminine :)

Barbie Exploror taught me a lot of things as a kid.
For example, there are these magical floating rocks that can take you across gaps. But even if you fall into them, it doesn't matter anyway, because you'll just teleport back to the edge of the fatal cliff before anything bad happens to you.
Still trying to find those floating gemstones though, I could really use 'em to pay rent.
17:55 Little did Arin know, this jump was really almost impossible because in the N.Sane Trilogy they used the same engine for all 3 games, so the rope bridge level in Crash 1 is nearly impossible to make.

God this game was my childhood. This and the other pc barbie games like the barbie as rapunzel game were my shit as a kid. I saw this and I was instantly hit with a nostalgia trip. I do also remember being somewhat unsettled by how quiet the game actually was though
The secret agent Barbie game was pretty dope too imo. I had that one, Explorer, the vet/pet rescue one, and the ocean one where you have to look for stuff under the sea with your dolphin friend. I disliked Barbie dolls with a passion but those games were the shit.

It's not necessarily that the toys are made for boys and girls, it's how they're marketed. Commercials are very suggestive, and kids (and parents) are easily manipulated into thinking what they want and what is made for them. All toys are gender neutral in theory, it's just the stigmas created by society and corporations that cause the weird gender divide in kids products

If you do any form of research you'll see that foetal testosterone levels influence the predisposition to gravitate toward one set of objects and one set of behaviours with those over the other. Low testosterone predisposes children to want "feminine" toys and to act out plays or gentle actions, while high does the opposite.

I'm glad I watched a let's play of the new Crash Bandicoot before buying it. Now I can be sure trading Prey for a copy is worth it.
In my opinion, they somehow managed to downgrade the graphics but totally made up for it with more of a focus on the gems themselves instead of the boxes and giving that extra backstory to how Tawna got turned into a bandicoot.

I remember playing a PS1 when i was like 5 years old. I had some disk or something with a bunch of demos for games like harry potter, or twisted metal. Most of them were just video teasers, but one of the playable demos was this. So when I saw this video i got kinda exited, mainly just to see them go to the jungle. I also remember being chased by a giant snowball from some yeti that scared the shit out of tiny me.

ProjectWinged it's not worth it, it ends with an awful "to be continued" and there was never a sequel. I know cause 5 year old me also couldn't finish this mess of a game and I checked years later out of curiosity

The New Crash N Sane Triliogy looks a bit different than I expected...
Kitchen playsets when not gendered are used frequently by both boys and girls. They are included in high scope curriculum as a suggestion for constructive play. Kids see parents in the kitchen and are interested in exploring what adults do. I see this every day at work :)
I remember we had this game at the after school program I went to, and literally none of the girls ever got a turn because the boys all hogged it all the time. In turn though we usually hogged Goosebumps Escape from Horrorland.

329link I guess you have a point. I looked up other LPs of this (believe it or not, they exist) and it was clear that it's only possible to grab on to the bars by jumping at the very edge of the pit (not really good game design, if you ask me :P).

omg I am so happy to find other people that have played the same Barbie games as I have xD I tried to collect them all when I was a kid. I had the Carnival Caper one and this Explorer game, in addition to Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, Secret Agent, Pet Rescue, Horse Adventures, Make-up Studio, Fashion Design studio (that came with printable textiles so you could print your own designs), and Barbie movie maker.
I also had Barbie Photo Studio, which came with this weird little camera that didn't work properly, and Barbie the Genie, that came with a Genie bottle that you used as part of the controls.
Man, the 90's had so many games that came with weird-ass extra controllers and crap...
I LOVED this game as a kid! It was so hard but so so much fun :D

This video shot me back 14years into the past, I’m in 2nd grade. It’s a week before school let’s out for the summer. I just spent an hour on Mavis Beacon learning to type, my teacher let’s us play Barbie Explorer for the rest of the day. My friends and I share packets of yogos and gushers and trade our sparkly pencils we bought at the book fair when our parents strictly told us to only buy books. Life is good.

This brought back DEEPLY forgotten memories. My sister used to have this game when I was a toddler, and we spent literal DAYS trying to complete a level. I think we actually completed it at one point, but it's as difficult as Arin says it is.
This game was my childhood and nothing has ever brought me more joy than watching two grown men trying to play it
