CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Lloyd (John Cusack) uses a meaningful song to call Diane (Ione Skye) back to him.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Ione Skye plays Diane Court, high-school valedictorian on the verge of heading to England on a prestigious scholarship. This is especially thrilling to Diane's divorced father, James (John Mahoney), who has always shared a special relationship with the girl, less father/daughter than friend/friend. When Diane begins dating irresponsible army brat Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack), her father despairs at her choice of an "underachiever." Pressured by her dad to break off the relationship, Diane spends the rest of the summer being pursued by the lovestruck Lloyd, who does everything he can to win her back. Diane finally realizes there's more to life than perfection when her sainted father comes under the scrutiny of the IRS.

I agree!
I wish someone like him would hold up a boom box for me! Makes my heart melt!
One of the most iconic movie scenes ever filmed.
Why, tho? I don't get it, can you explain it to me
+Steven Zore It is because some scenes just become famous. It's not some sort of science, it's just how it is. Take Scarface or Taxi Driver for example. It's either you talking to me? or say hello to my little friend. some scenes just become pop culture and get spread like diseases.
It's obvious why he's doing this, because he's in love. As far as it becoming iconic as Movie Phantom said who knows why this one scene from an otherwise forgotten 80s romantic comedy stuck. In Your Eyes went from a modest hit off of Gabriel's So album to the what it's become now thanks to this scene as well. The song is as much of what drove this to being this hugely iconic and parodied scene.
Just saw this scene mimicked in the Flash season 2 episode 7 when Cisco holds a basket of food above his head like the film here and they play the same song. lol
Forgotten? It definitely is not. The scene sticks in our minds because of what the gesture represents and on a visual standpoint as well. The clothes, the boombox with arms raised high. It's a nice visual
I just love how it zooms in on his face, and you can see how determined he was. This scene barely 2 minutes long, with no dialogue but is still so powerful.
Perfect comment.
Stalker
Yea, I love that so much!
The expression on his face is so sweet. You can tell he's thinking, "Is she listening? Is she there? Does she even care about me anymore? Because even if she doesn't, I still love her." Everyone deserves a Lloyd Dobler in their life.
Lightshade393
What song is this
Wonderful sentiments..........
In real life Lloyd gets dumped a few months later and dies of fentanyl addiction later in life.
So vulnerable and earnest 😭
How come John Cusack can stand outside his crush’s window holding a boombox playing this song and win her heart, but when I stand outside my crush’s window playing music, all I win is a night in jail and a restraining order???
JT Brah it was the 80s man
Because movies make successes out of things that should fail miserably because it makes for good stories.
Ha ha haaa
JT Brah If you time it well and male sure that she is comfortable around you then this will be the sweetest gesture your crush will ever recieve in her life.
If you expect to land at her house in the middle of the night and play something like 'Last thing I remember is our beautiful bodies grinding up in the club.
Drunk in love...' jail is the only place you will go.
Because movies/pop culture show people what they want to see, not what the reality is.
He probably had to put like $25 worth of D cell batteries in that thing to get it to play without a power cord.
its running on the power of love
@@DrNickRiveria Mike's comment made me chuckle but yours made me spat my tea😂

one time my friend asked me to come over & watch this movie w her. we were watching it, and a couple minutes after this scene played she told me to look out the window. my best friend was standing in her yard holding a boom box that was playing this song over his head, and I ran to him... he asked me to homecoming, and we’ve been dating ever since. literally epic. love him so much
olive mae Thats so sweet!❤❤❤
Omg how sweet so happy for your relationship congrats 😊
Update?
olive mae how'd that work out?
Update 😅🤣
I will come back in another life and boombox "Careless Whisper" outsider your window.
Chrysalis 😆😆😆😆
Vince Vaughn said that in a movie but I don’t know which 😂
Assclown .. Deadpool quote 🤣👍
....My avatar says it all.
WHAM!
Still get the chills as John Cusack holds up that BOOMBOX and serenaded his girl and he's really groveling and really hoping his girl will respond to his attempts.......he's really putting his pride ego and heart on the line by humbling himself and giving a last ditch effort of winning over her affections and she would love his gesture of love
This isn't love, it's romanticizing stalking lmao. Hollywood movies make it seem like when a guy/girl stalks their love interest, it is creepy at all. If this happened in real life, I know I'd call the police if they didn't go away.
Stupid take by a stupid person
@@yesno8785you're an idiot
They loved each other. This isn't stalking. He was showing her what she meant to him and it was her choice to respond What a cynic you are.
@@yesno8785 lmao you sound like fun
I saw Peter Gabriel play at Madison Square Garden Monday night Sept 18 2023. When he played this song a girl near the front row had a pretend boombox made out of cardboard and such. She handed it to Peter and he raised it over his head while the band played this song. Was a great moment (which I filmed and will post on you tube sometime in the next days).
Did you ever post it? Thats an amazing idea of peter holding the boombox while singing this song!
Where’s the link?? I NEED THAT!!! 🤣
Did you end up posting it?? That's so sweet 😊😆
That scene STILL gives me chills everytime I see it.
me too
"I'm standing here until you make me move..." When you'll do anything. Definitely feel this.
I love how serious he is.... He means business!!
What's cuter? John Cusack professing his love through a boombox or him standing in the rain?? Dream man.
am cute look !
Ah, when romance was still alive ...
I miss the 80s.
It’s sad that almost every romance movies haven’t aged well.
there's a difference between romance and stalking....you just haven't figured it out yet.
@@tazmon122 Or maybe you should read great works of romantic literature and observe other forms of romantic art before you subject us all to your postmodern view of romance. Romance is ultimately subjective, but the modern idea of romance is devoid of soul.
@@mirr1984 dam, k1ll1ng yourself cuz ur love reject u (literally any romantic literature) is very sweet wow
@@mirr1984 Just because you haven't experienced it doesn't mean it's devoid of soul. You can have your grand unsolicited gestures. I will take the year in, year out of someone by my side, nursing me through illness, smiling at me first thing when he wakes up, and putting my needs and wants equal to his own.
Still without a doubt one of the most iconic and famous movie scenes of all time.
John. Cusack. One of the greatest. Actors. God. Bless him. They don't make actors like him anymore
For those of you who cant sing i wish i could share this gift with you. I cant tell you how amazing it is to sing some of these old school 80s love songs to a person and see the look in their eyes when they melt.
Cusack is strong as hell to hold a boom box with 75lbs of batteries over his head for that long.
LOL.. Yeah late 80's Boom Box, that thing probably took about 15 D batteries..
Legend has it..he’s still standing there to this day.
This song is just perfection and embedding it into this film was simply amazing
Simple, yet effective. Possibly one of the most romantic scenes in the history of film (the choice of the song was crucial!).
I don't care what _anyone_ says...this is one of the absolute *_BEST_* scenes in the history of movies. Who agrees with me? 😁
Me, and I am 74 years old!
HaHaHa LMFAO.... uhhh Brandon..? Is this the ONLY movie you've ever seen? Gotta be!!!
Meh...it's got nothing on "I want my 2 Dollars"
Agreed
If he played _Nothing Else Matters_ by _Metallica,_ she would’ve come to the f-ing window…but of course, it’d be on a mix tape audio cassette & the song which played after would be _Angry Again_ by Megadeth, and *THAT* song make her pull her shade down…

Same here bro.
+Nicholas Bret I tried calling my girl just to tell her I love her and I`m thinking about her. I had to leave a voice message. She text back "K".
+Nicholas Bret girls where prob way better in the 80s lol
This was one of the most amazing movies. Loved when she confronted her father about his stealing, how she had chosen him to live with because he had told her she could say anything to him.
It was so a revolutionary concept and still is tell me what you think and and feel without fear of punish, or shame or judgement I will hear you because you matter. Whoa that fight they had when he showed her that he meant " You tell me what I am comfortable hearing about you and your life, you can't tell me what you really think about me I'm still your father."
Just Epic moment of realization of how she had been played by her father, and that he was lying and stealing from his residents and he firmly thought she had no right to be angry and disgusted by his behavior, to silently support him .
Wow it was one the best scene's in film... AWESOME MOVIE!!! Not preachy or making anyone into a cliche just showing the flaws of relationships .
+Karen Lacey My dad made the rank of vice admiral, I never even noticed that dynamic between Diane and her dad. My dad is U.S. Navy Search & Rescue, Navy Savior, that's what I see Lloyd as. He risked everything for Diane.
Hmmm What does Your father's naval career have to do with Dennis being a two faced deceiver?
Dennis was a man desperate to salvage something from his marriage , during the divorce he chose a lie to bind his child to him.
He told her " If you pick me You can Say anything, with out fear of reproof, shame or judgement but most important I won't respond that you can't speak your mind, just because I'm your father."
Knowing his daughter he knew she longed for a mutual relationship based on respect and understanding. Instead of resolving to build it he chose to be what he is and was a man determined not to lose any more after his divorce.
He could of accomplished binding her to him by telling her " Look I love you I'm not a perfect man, Mother and I are divorceing because we couldn't make it work, but from this day forward I will strive to be a better father than to you than I was when I was married to your Mother.
I want you in my life I have lost your mother I think will lose you too if you live with mom so here's my offer take it or leave it."
" You can talk to me with respect, I'm your father though treat me with honor for my that.
I'm no shakespeare or Jesus I get angry, I have my pet peeves and biases and yes I'm prejuicded against a lot people it's how I was raised. But I love you child, my daughter I don't want a son I will take all comers to defend you and provide for you.
Please pick me Diane I love you just as much as your mom, I can't change that much but I am stepping out to claim you if you will choose me."
See if he done that their would be no film, but what he did instead was he told his daughter she could tell me anything and he trained her to tell him everything about herself, while keeping her in the dark about who he was and what he was doing until his habits of lying and stealing got him arrested for fraud in the nursing home.
He was your basic I'm not going to expose my vulnerablities to my family so they can know me, No I will tell them what MAKES ME APPEAR GOOD so they think they know me.
Dennis is a guy who doesn't understand how to be emotionally available to the people in his life, then wonders why they freak out over his deceptions and half-truths.
Where is lying to your daughter about who you are and what you do, stealing from your dying elderly clients, while trying to run off a well intentioned honest young man away from your daughter ( so you won't lose her to marriage before she goes to collage) are anything those things motivated by the love of a parent to a child or just a loving but scared controlling person who is too screwed up to make his relationships better through honesty.
He had to tell Diane the truth because of the investigation into the nursing home, when he was bothering her over her testimony that is how she found out he was a thief.
So yes Why would you think your fathers career would be a relevant discussion point to study Dennis's actions in the film?
Do you really believe actions taken by a parent to eliminate people in the child's life who could become more meaningful to the child in the future simply to keep the relationship between parent and child at status quo.
When it's the parent who has difficulty forming and maintaining relationships that are based on mutuality and equality instead of position and previlege?
Karen Lacey Lloyd Dobler is the character played by John Cusack, Diane's father's character name is James Court. Lloyd is the hero of the movie, he's the one who had the courage to ask out Diane in the first place. I'm sorry, you misunderstood what I was saying. I was skipping past the relationship between Diane and her dad James Court and saying my dad the Savior is like Lloyd, risking all of his emotions, his own well being taking a chance trying to be Diane's *boyfriend!* There's a dynamic I see between Lloyd and Diane's dad James Court at the end of the movie where Lloyd is talking to James in prison, and then Diane comes over and talks to her dad. At first only Lloyd would talk to James Court. The point about my dad being in charge of 50,000 military personnel is that I never had any dad issues. My brothers & sister, Joseph, Mary and John & I had the perfect role model in a father. Lloyd was James Court's best friend despite James' attempts to separate him from his daughter. We're on the same page.
+Karen Lacey Lloyd wasn't the father
Yeah Dennis I'm meant Dennis!
I was dying laughing when this was recreated in Deadpool 2. By far one of the most iconic scenes in film history
Nah the best rendition was in a British Sitcom called Spaced. Not only was it a brilliant climax to the series, but they did it with a tank...

I love 80s movies and this is my fave!
Peter Gabriel wasn’t too convinced to let Camerone Crowe use this song for the culmination scene of “Say Anything”, until he saw a rough cut of the movie and was sold. I don’t know how Dianne didn’t run to the window and give Lloyd a break. In any case, I was Lloyd to a degree, lost, emotional, funny but not the smartest guy in the room. It worked out for me and I found my Dianne. I watched this movie over 15 times in the AMC8 theatre in Tacoma, Washington.
This has to be one of the most iconic moments of 80s cinema.
Yes it is.. And inspired God knows how many guys in the 80's and 90's to do this..
100% Iconic scene. The movie was so underrated but it gave one of the best romcom story out there
Not underrated today.. People love it. Just another movie that needed some time to click..
This scene made Peter Gabriel’s song epic. ‘In Your eyes’ is a song I’ve own on every media through the years. And I always dreamed of having someone love me as much as Dobbler loved Diane.
I always wanted this.... It's so simple and sweet. It says everything.
I really miss the days when guys would make bold romantic gestures like this. Making playlists on Spotify or Apple Music for someone just isn’t the same as making a mix tape and leaving it in your girlfriend’s car for her so that when she starts that car up the next morning, she hears that playlist that he made - just for her. ❤
Sometimes a camera moves so perfectly that it just makes the scene. The slow dolly track in this scene is one of those times.
This movie is so amazing it tells you that it’s always not the girl who gets hurt by a break up but a guy to Lloyd couldn’t live without her and he confessed to that by playing the song they made love to
I've still never seen this movie. Just this clip
In the 80’s this is how we sent a text
Rip 80s . Just a fading memory
One of the best movie bits of ALL time. I'm a guy and it makes me cry...
John Cusack in this movie is my dreamboat
Romance -a dying art. Love that song.
One of the most powerful scenes in cinema history. The movie is not that great overall, but this scene makes it legendary.
It shouldn't be creepy. Grand romantic gestures are lost in today's world.
It's not romantic when the person has already told them No.
bravelittleroomba thanks for proving him right.
Exactly! That’s never Creepy! If it’s a scary song that’ll be creepy, but if it’s a song that you like whether it is romantic or groovy; then yes! Sounds like there is a live concert outside near your house!!! That is So relaxing to Me! Literally!
bravelittleroomba there proving the point of how and why romance is pretty much dead today.
Grand romantic gestures and chivalry were jumped by feminism and the word "cringe." They still _exist_ , but I'll be goddamned if those don't get brought up by people insisting they _shouldn't_ . I mean, I doubt I'm the only one who remembers "fight for the one you love" turning into "learn to let them go."
Is there a point where the first sentiment goes overboard and makes a relationship unhealthy? Yes. Is there a point where the _latter_ sentiment goes overboard as well, and instead nukes a relationship from orbit before it learns to even _crawl_ ? _Hell_ yes. I get the impression that at some point in the near future "romance" will be banned because outcriers _insist_ on any possible negative being the only possible outcome.
And boy, would _that_ be a terrible world to live in...
I love the look of purpose on his face & how he’s so determined he’s going to be with her, like it’s the one thing he most sure of in the world…🥰
Best scene in the entire movie, and one of the most iconic movie shots in history!
I’m still waiting for my John cusack to hold up the boom box and play that song. Best scene ever
How can you turn down a guy like that, like howwww........lol.
ask my crush, she was able to do that no problem
Because this is creepy af
If he was ugly a woman would call the police.
By not getting any sleep for a couple days and finally resting your head, closing your eyes, and then..."IN YOUR EYES"
If you watch the movie you will know why
Being the boombox back, damn it
One of the most iconic romatic scenes from a movie and dam fine song
My practical side is like, "his arms must be tired."
I love how she is in her bedroom and he is in some random park probably miles away from her house.
I will never forget this scene, so amazing.
Just met him at MegaCon , his vibe was awesome, really nice guy. My life came full circle , saweeeeet lol
You met John Cusack? You lucky human being.
Today it would be be a smart phone with a Spotify playlist
The people who say this is creepy are the people who killed romance.
Peter So true😭😭
Romace exist in these days?
May they burn in Hell.
Its how the person receive it, if he/she didnt like it then yes its creepy
It’ll only be creepy if she didn’t know him, but both characters had a relationship.
Probably one of the most iconic movie scenes ever!
In this scene, you can see that John is more sophisticated than some guy who only wants sex...
Oh, wow... if I could ever have this happen
I gave her my heart. She gave me a pen.
He’s holding that box like his virtue projection
0:29 - "I come back to the place you are" on Diane.
1:03 - "In your eyes" chorus pan on Lloyd.
Both these moments really epitomize the song and impact it had on the movie.
This is the most Romeo like gesture of the 80’s..lol
This is without doubt the most iconic shot in movie history. Just beautiful.

The crazy thing about this scene is that the actual song coming out of the boombox was not Peter grabriel’s song….it was a different song….

@@stevetrowbridge6790 At my age, I am quite aware of the difference.
Lloyd Dobler is one of the coolest guys
the way he talks is just cool
When you realize that he didn't really have to hold it up like that, it would've been the same if he kept it on the hood of the car, or ground. Holding it up adds to the determination he had at that moment
😂
The directors actually tried filming it that way, with Lloyd sitting on the car with the boombox, but they felt that was too passive. On the last take, while holding the boombox he gave the look we see in the movie, so it really wouldn’t work any other way
This has to be one of the most parodied scenes ever filmed.
Happy 30th anniversary for say anything everyone 😁
kind of blows my mind that the director Cameron Crowe did an iconic scene involving a song in two movies- this one and the tiny dancer tour bus scene in Almost Famous.
