If any of you who have never owned a 4.0 online XJ and are asking yourselves, 'Why did he just nitpick so many little issues instead of addressing bigger issues that the vehicles were known for?' Because this specific jeep, more so the 1997-1999 imo, were bullet proof vehicles that just required subpar maintenance and would still excel on the road and really held their value depending on what state you lived in. The vehicles are amazing to say the least.

I would say it is the best vehicle I have owned for use back and forth to the wilds of Canada and back to heavy road use in the US. Another problem is inadequate cooling when towing a trailer loaded with gear in the heat of the summer. I love all the gauges in the vehicle and the two transfer case options. Also choice of three rear differentials. Dana 35 Chrysler or Dana 44. Another weakness is the drivers seat will tend to break welds trying to get your wallet out of your pocket. But for an inexpensive vehicle all of these problems can be overcome!

Yes the click in the door!!! This past weekend my passenger side door was stuck open. The spring bracket was bent and locked up with years of rust. I fixed the problem and greased all the other doors. They still sound like shit but at least they work.. The other thing I hate is that squeak that comes and goes from the plastic dashboard. So random, and hard to find the cause. Great work, you got a new sub 👏
Just watched this video again and remembered something, sometimes you can make the door check noise better by spraying some wd40 on it. The passenger door on the ZJ made a terrible creaking sound when you opened the door, sprayed some wd40 on the door check and hinges, 6 months later the noise has still not came back. Doesn't always work ( depending on how bad it is ) but it does sometimes.
@@ProjectDanH yea, it just depends on how bad it is. The ZJ had more of squeel, rather than a clunk. It got rid of the squeel on it. Now thinking back to it, I think that 93 country I mentioned had the clunk on the doors of it. Maybe it's worse for XJ's?
Hi Dan, i have done the D35 XJ rear disc convertion with ABS. Mine in a RHD Australian 95 model, but i bought the parts from a US ZJ and added the handbrake cables etc. The conversion works excellently and looks professional. No bulldog clamps or rough brackets. Although mine is a pre update, i can give you my list of parts, conversion tips, photos etc... The rear brakes now are maintenance free, hassle free, ABS compatible (legal), performance enhanced and just generally all around better.
One of my very easy tips is the ABS reluctor rings. The XJ and ZJ had a different size. You need to use the ZJ. Remove the old XJ smaller ones off the axles with heat and a crow bar. To fit the new ZJ ones on the axles, simply pop the new ZJ ones in the oven at 200c for an hour. They will just slide into position on the old axles due to the interference fit. No press, no muss, no fuss. Use ZJ ABS cables and sensors. You only have to make a small cut out in the axle backing plate to receive the ZJ sensors. This does not affect the load bearing capacity, as the load is carried through the axle itself, which is separate to the backing plate.
that's an excellent tip brother 👊. I just scored some new D35 Axles off my parts ZJ so I don't have to do the tone ring swap. 👍 I cant wait to get started!
The thing I hate about my XJ the most it's been stuck in a snowbank for 2 weeks. The dealer should have that door check, don't forget to get the special roll pin that attaches it to the A pillar.
My girlfriends '89 XJ Pioneer rear bottom trim piece is not broken. So I will keep this in mind that it is something to watch out for... Yet I have to ask if your alternator is mounted below where it can easily be submerged and possibly blow? But in amusement the closed system air conditioning unit is mounted on top that has one electrical connector that can be sealed. Keeping humor in mind that these were probably made for "soccer moms" "back in the day". ;) lol Amusing content, thank you.
I have chrome handles and the lift gate is chrome push button no plastic handles for me and that piece is not broken!!! 1987 Laredo holy crap now I know where that squeak is coming from
Project Dan H I appreciate the honesty of the video and I find It funny that we find the same things about the vehicle necessarily in our taste XJ or bust
My 96 Cherokee has front disc brakes which handles about 90% of braking. The rear brakes used mostly for parking brake. My hatch has the button style and is easy to open. The rear squeak is usually the glass in the rear widows if the seat doesn't fix it. What happens is the rubber around the glass gets hard over the years. As your driving the rubber rubs against the glass causing a annoying squeak. I spayed a lube like WD-40 and the noise went away. Your spare tire if loose can also squeak just use a piece of rubber between the tire and the car.
I have a 96 with none of these problems. Maybe it was a smart move to buy a new 96 instead of a 97 (they were both available at the time). I wanted to stay with the classic look.
I have a 1999 XJ. I really avoided the 2000/2001 XJs because of the head, dual precats, some have low pinion front axle. I forgot about the dana 35 if you have ABS.
00 and 01 should all have a new TUPY head by now lol, and an HP d30 shouldn't be too hard to find these days. Plus I enjoy the coil packs. That's why I will never rule out an 00-01. Unfortunately the precats do cause alot of heatsoak.
To Dan H. Dan, I'll continue to pray for you.... But on a more serious note, I too have a 93 Country. Switching over to rear disc brakes is something I'd love to do simply because of the simplicity of the Disc Brake System. The 2nd thing is the R-12 Refrigerant System. Wondering if all I'd need to do is get the R-134A Conversion Kit & leaving the old style Compressor on it.... I'll keep searching your video's on the Disc Brake & wait to hear from ya on the A/C R-134A changeover.. Your friend, Dan J (aka Monty Daniels) Peace & Love to ya Brother....Oh yes, I am still looking for a Southern XJ for the Wifie..... Edit: Love the Door Click set to music, what an amazing guy you are Dan, thanks again for keeping it Real :)
thank brother! I'm sorry but I can't help you with the AC system. That's one thing I stay away from. I'm gonna try to do the disc brake swap soon! God Bless!
@@ProjectDanH Ha Ha, I'm thinking as long as this old system is still going, lol I'll focus on other things... God Bless you guys as well Dan H....Thx for the reply....
I'm on my third Cherokee. (So I love them.) Can't really argue with any of what you're saying. I did replace a door check roll pin and remedy that annoyance on one of them. As for the squeak on the backseat release...my '00 Limited has (factory?) felt tape around those parts. I have to say, a lot of the little squeaks and rattles in my XJ have become comforting to me. I'm sick of newer cars being eerily quiet, as if they aren't machines.
I'm a bit late to the party having only recently developed an interest in these vehicles. I have noticed that the XJ is roughly the same era as the Land Rover Discovery 1/2 running from 1989 to 2004. The XJ and the Discovery share similar faults. The door check straps, really annoying and the rear seat backs squeaking! At least we got front disc brakes! Love the channel, keep up the good work!
Well, there's a small business venture! Create a solid mold of that trim piece and cast new ones in aluminum. Then polish them up and sell them either plain, to be finished by the customer, or in a few select powder coat or anodized finishes. It's low volume and pretty simple to set up as a back-yard operation.
I'm 16 just got my first car and its a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport and only has 176k miles on it I got it for $700 little to no rust and the plastic piece in the trunk area and all the trim and everything else is in mint condition.
I got a serious question.. I got a Jeep Cherokee 4x4 4L 1998. The problem is with the sensor’s.. I need to get them replaced as the Jeep just stops dude to the start/stop sensor.. there is supposed to be 2 seniors.. I don’t know where that are or what I can do.. hope you read my comment and can help 🙂
Which video tells about your storage box in the back? I think i really would like that drop front style for quick access to a deer rifle maybe or a shotgun.
1: The stock headlights are terrible ($20 ebay harness and some LEDs or H4s fix that pretty easy though) 2: No fold up front windshield wipers 3: No 60/40 rear seat or headrests for rear seat 4: The glovebox lock is Junk 5: The tailgate stuff you mentioned
hahahahah! I own a 2000 xj and the squeaky seat latch is so funny. I've had my Cherokee for a little over a year and I'm just now understanding what that noise is!!! Thanks.
Great video! Yes, I hate the door check sound. It does make it sound old and crappy. I will look out for your video on what you do about it. And now I hate my jolly rancher too!!!! It has to go! 😄😄
Excellent list, I'm lucky I don't have the seat heaters but agree with the rest. With all respect, I'd like to add one. The water leak from the passenger side when it rains, comes from the cowl, the water leaks through the air conditioning outside air inlet seal over the evaporator, so in order to fix it, you'll need to remove the dashboard and the evaporator assembly! Yes, I know there are some people who cut the body at the cowl and access from there, but I don't think is a good idea.
So I think I have a solution to that *click click* the door makes. We bought a car a few months ago the guy that owned it before took the pin out and put a nut and bolt through.
As bad as drum brakes are to service they do have one positive attribute. Unlike disc brakes they don’t allow rocks to get in between brake shoes and drum. Good for an off-road vehicle
Dan I’m getting ready to retire in about 2 years. I then plan to go out west and visit as many national park I can . I’m looking to get me a used XJ to do my trip. Any recommendation on which xj to look for?
My favorites are a stock 2000 or 2001 with low miles from rust free climate. Just make sure it's stamped TUPY on the cylinder head . You'll see it through the oil cap if you shine a flash light inside. That would be the biggest factor in reliability. Of course if possible grab a limited!
Talk to me about these rear seats. I’ve heard you mention agate or a-gate (or however you spell it) and cannot find the via the googles. Can you post a link? Thanks!
the thing i hate the most is the 4.0l engine that has 10hp and gets 10 MPG i can deal with poor fuel economy if its in exchange for some horsepower LS swap and the XJ is a totally different vehicle.
I see some issues in this comment, First off the 10hp thing, It wasn't designed for speed or offroading (alot) just enough to feel good for a stationwagon, second the 10 MPG is a personal problem they came from factory with about 20 MPG and I did have the issue of bad fuel economy but that was due to the old trans slipping (AW4). Also when I was getting the bad eco I dynoed on 190HP to the wheels after fixing it im only getting about 180 ish. ( Comment fueled by me being tired of people shitting on the 4L and saying to "Just LS swap it bro"
Those Door Checks Suck and in the end it will seize up. a Simple piece of rope and 2 Screws would have done the Job. 30 Bucks to replace that noise maker along with pulling the Door Panel off to unbolt. Mine Seized up so i pulled the Pin and it's Silent. I have to do something with that so the door can't fully swing open. and crack the welds on the hinge. I'm the only one who uses the Drivers door so i know not to let the door fully open. Still thinking about a Nylon Rope cut to the right length with 2 hoops on the ends installed with 2 small screws along with flat washers. Just a thought.
@@ProjectDanH Hi: I think the noise was the front driveshaft. I seen a grease fitting on it.. I took my grease-gun all apart and cleaned it, and gave it a couple of blasts! Sounds much quieter!
Lol I'll have to make my top 5 list but there's still a lot I haven't explored yet. Number one right now would probably be the stock tcase linkage... Excited to see Dan H's take on a disc brake conversion vid!
Lol. Each XJ has there own personality but I tried to think of stuff that consistently annoying me lol! I've begun collecting disc brake conversion parts... I just gotta find some time to do it! Lol
Where can I find those trim pieces on the bottom of the interior tail gate opening? I could get them at one time, but now can't find one. My 2001 is broken, of course.
Hoods are interchangeable, yes. Fenders and header panel are too but they all must match together. Doors are and lift gate are not, they must match the body unless you do some pretty extensive mods.
I have a couple questions if you can answer then possibly... I have a 2001 XJ with serious Rust holes in the fenders/bumper (no big deal it’s my fault from Salt water lol) and a small one in the hood, any idea on a good fix for the good one? And last things is did you paint this gorgeous truck yourself? If so how and what did you use?!?!?!?!
I only painting I did was the POR 15 on the undercarriage. I ground, sanded, and brushed all the rust off then did the complete POR15 treatment. I was able to restore the body paint by compounding and polishing.

Hey love the build and the challenger rims! Where can I find the rear spoiler? Saw you posted the link to a comment response but can’t find it anymore.
Disc brakes are expensive. A lot of low cost cars had rear drums and still do today. Also new Tacoma’s still have rear drums. Drums tend to be ideal rear brakes for light truck towing. Why? I don’t know lol.
The reason for drum brakes is simple really if you've ever been stuck axle deep in some nasty stuff sand or gravel gets stuck if in there can ruin rotors and pads real quick. No biggie if yours is a pavement princess but if your back in the Rockies 40 miles from nearest town you need your brakes to work properly
LMAO,. Pavement princess indeed. So tell me, if drum brakes are so good why are they phased out? Furthermore, Why are disc brakes used on the front where they endure 70% of the stopping power? Funny, I still haven't seen a Disc to Drum conversion. 🤔 I'd really love to see a JKU with 4 way drum brakes! 🤣🤣🤣. thanks for the view, I appreciate you watching. 👊. PS. thanks for Tom N Huck.. great novel.
Hi Dan. Thank you for this video. You’ve answered a lot of my questions. I have a 2001 XJ that I just purchased. When I turn on the air conditioner the truck idles funny and then shuts off. Is that the AC compressor ? I also have a check gauges light that comes on in the cluster often. Ive noticed that the oil pressure is low. Just little things here and there to sort out. Other than that I’m very happy with my XJ.
#5 - After almost 10 yrs of that door click noise, I finally fixed it today. It only took 5 mins. All I did was knock the pin out of the rear door hinge, and tap it in to the front door hinge. QUIET AT LAST!
4 out of the 5 things should be those rims.

A princess? Its called take care of your jeep not treat it like a piece of shit this thing is beautiful.
New door check arm does the trick! Did it right away with mine. Nails on a chalk board!!
Nice! Nothing says Cherokee like "Click Click" Glad to hear you did it the right way!
Hey Alex! I'm gearing up to do the swap soon. I have all the parts now I just gotta find the time 😁
that's an excellent tip brother 👊.
John I apologise but I busted out laughing at your comment. I'm so sorry to hear that. Will you be able to remove it soon? Please keep me posted!

@@johndorflinger2344 oh man, That's some serious weather! Stay warm and be safe!
Congrats on the trim piece! lol Thanks for watching. 👍
I have chrome handles and the lift gate is chrome push button no plastic handles for me and that piece is not broken!!! 1987 Laredo holy crap now I know where that squeak is coming from
Haha! That squeak!!!
Project Dan H I appreciate the honesty of the video and I find It funny that we find the same things about the vehicle necessarily in our taste XJ or bust
The squeak, yes, I HATE that on my 99 XJ. Luckily I bump my type R 12's half the time so I can't hear it...
Haha! Hell yea Mike 🤘
Your definitely diagnosing some serious squeakage! Sounds like a pro Cherokee owner!
Call me crazy, but I personally love the door clicks. I think they add to the personality of the truck.
You have a point... Nothing screams XJ like "click click"
Now it has a song to go along with it. Makes it a lot better.
I have a 96 with none of these problems. Maybe it was a smart move to buy a new 96 instead of a 97 (they were both available at the time). I wanted to stay with the classic look.
lol.. I think your right. Its quite possible a 97 and up problem.
(So I love them.)
Can't really argue with any of what you're saying.
I agree Marv... these little things feel like home!
Thank you Sleepy!
The hate that door sound tune was... LOL! Loved it.
Lol! Thanks for watching!
Well, there's a small business venture! Create a solid mold of that trim piece and cast new ones in aluminum.
Then polish them up and sell them either plain, to be finished by the customer, or in a few select powder coat or anodized finishes.
It's low volume and pretty simple to set up as a back-yard operation.
now you're onto something!! 💪
Yup the door clicks for sure. Can't wait to see your fix on that.
lol! Yep, its definitely on my list of parts to order.. hopefully ill get them soon.
I'm 16 just got my first car and its a 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport and only has 176k miles on it I got it for $700 little to no rust and the plastic piece in the trunk area and all the trim and everything else is in mint condition.
awesome brother! congratulations. great first vehicle!
Great video. The cloth tape on the rear seat latch isn’t a bad idea!
Thanks man! quick and easy!
Could be a Crank shaft position sensor. not a bad job.

If that rear latch gets stuck pull the latch and "punch" on the right and left side of latch and it'll pop open
lol, gentle pressure on the license plate works too
Which video tells about your storage box in the back? I think i really would like that drop front style for quick access to a deer rifle maybe or a shotgun.
sorry buddy! I didn't make that video yet!
1: The stock headlights are terrible ($20 ebay harness and some LEDs or H4s fix that pretty easy though)
2: No fold up front windshield wipers
3: No 60/40 rear seat or headrests for rear seat
4: The glovebox lock is Junk
5: The tailgate stuff you mentioned
Nice List buddy!!
hahahahah! I own a 2000 xj and the squeaky seat latch is so funny. I've had my Cherokee for a little over a year and I'm just now understanding what that noise is!!! Thanks.
LMAO! I funny because once you hear it you can never "unhear" it.
The door sound is just the pin, inside the latch. Had the same problem
lol. yes. they suck. gonna do the whole check.... one day
Great video! Yes, I hate the door check sound. It does make it sound old and crappy. I will look out for your video on what you do about it. And now I hate my jolly rancher too!!!! It has to go! 😄😄
Haha! Sorry for turning you against your brake light! Try an Orvis spoiler!
I will look into an Orvis spoiler 😃 that’s got to be better than EBay UK!! 🤣
How to get rid of the clicking? Remove it!! The door won't stay propped open that's all 🤷🏻♂️
LOL! I just did a video on fixing my door check! I don’t want to take it back out!!! 😁 It was so difficult putting it back in!
@@GoatOffroad Lol my XJ came with them removed. Didnt even notice though til I watched this video!
Yes, I know there are some people who cut the body at the cowl and access from there, but I don't think is a good idea.
yes! that's absolutely an issues! great comment 👍
So I think I have a solution to that *click click* the door makes. We bought a car a few months ago the guy that owned it before took the pin out and put a nut and bolt through.
I've done that, its only temporary. The real problem is in the internals of the door check.
@@ProjectDanH Ohh, okay that makes sense. A good day to you man!

As bad as drum brakes are to service they do have one positive attribute. Unlike disc brakes they don’t allow rocks to get in between brake shoes and drum. Good for an off-road vehicle
Good point! Still not enough for me to keep em! Lol
Of course if possible grab a limited!
dan i have been trying to identify the source of that squeak for like a year now, i can finally silence it #grateful
Haha, so glad I can help! Be careful though... It's persistent!
Omg omg yes...I thought it was the spare tire shaking...no, tools under rear seat...no, finally I found it...lol, thank you sir. 96 xj here, love it
Talk to me about these rear seats. I’ve heard you mention agate or a-gate (or however you spell it) and cannot find the via the googles. Can you post a link? Thanks!
Sure, they're the factory leather XJ seats in Chrysler Agate color. What do you want to know about them?

Absolutely Steven! Thanks for watching
the thing i hate the most is the 4.0l engine that has 10hp and gets 10 MPG i can deal with poor fuel economy if its in exchange for some horsepower LS swap and the XJ is a totally different vehicle.
Add an 8 inch turbo and double that horsepower.....the jeep SRT will crank out 1,200 HP with the original engine.
Why was your aw4 slipping???
torque converter got old im guessing, then the bellhousing broke, then it started leaking, then I lost the hig hgears and changed it for an AX15
Not a bad Idea! got an LS I can squeeze in my engine bay???
Eventually im just gonna repair it with factory parts! lol.... eventually
Hey! I’m hearing a noise. I thought it might be a front outer U-joint. Maybe it’s the rear seat latch?
Tnx!
Haha! Probably! LMAO
Excited to see Dan H's take on a disc brake conversion vid!

ahhh another win for the sweet XJ. Just don't tell Doug from D&E in the garage. lol. I say keep the WJ and get an XJ too! the more jeeps the better 💪
Do you know if the 96 and the 2000 cherokee body panels are interchangeable....like the front fenders and hood
Where can I get new fenders and a hood for my 1998 Grande Cherokee Limited 5.9
Ebay, Craigslist, facebook marketplace, Letgo. thats what I use.. where ya from?

@@ProjectDanH When it comes to working on Jeeps, if you don't have a sore subject, you probably aren't in far enough yet
Exactly!
Disc brakes are expensive. A lot of low cost cars had rear drums and still do today. Also new Tacoma’s still have rear drums. Drums tend to be ideal rear brakes for light truck towing. Why? I don’t know lol.
Haha. Thanks Liam!
Thanks for watching! Congrats on the XJ! How's your battery and alternator? A new battery and alternator could potentially solve those problems.
Maybe idle air control and MAF sensor clean.
