I tried your method. It seems that when I remove the device to pump the fuel, it creates an air pocket.

This is the manufacturer specified method, but i am not sure why did you experience difficulty.

Should of put desil in the new filter before fitting and cover the hole at the bottom with finger that way no need for the pump
