It is incredible to me that what is essentially an innocent Bulgarian folk song can sound like the hardest shit ever to an English native listener
check out Introversion - Unmarried Old Man
@@rob6129 that's where I came from lol

@@killer18ism can you link to it? Couldn't find it.

As a Bulgarian, it's truly unbelievable to me that people like our folk music. I grew up thinking it was too old fashioned and boring, because that's what kids my age were saying. So thank you for reminding me of the beauty of it
the melody that is created by their voices is really beautiful, I think it is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard
Lol we also like the heavy Bring Me The Horizon song that has a snippet of it
As a Hungarian I think of Hungarian folk music the same way. Apparently what it boils down to is that we understand the lyrics in our own language, and since it is indeed old school we don't like it so much. With this song in particular though Parasite Eve definitely added to its popularity.
Nah It's absolutely incredible. The dynamics and interplay of their voices is just on another level. Tonal quality is really unique and works so well for this kinda choir. I love how they make their voices so 'thin', which makes them mix together incredibly well, almost sounding like a hurdy-gurdy. The joy and skill these ladies have radiates from their singing and most of all, the melodies are absolutely incredible. This has been one of my favorite songs for years now and I still return to it at least once a month. I feel like Bulgarian folk has cracked the code for music that you feel in your bones and its absolutely a cultural gem of this world that must never be lost. Thank you Bulgarians for making such incredible music!
It’s so old that it’s new! Lots of techno folks seem to like your folk singing!
BMTH brought me here but DAMN these women sure Know how to make a great harmony. Love it!
AMAZING!
Lots of love from Romania!
I just love bulgarian folklore even though i don't understand the language!
FENOMENALE!!!
Thank you, neighbour, your good will is much appreciated :) A lot of our folk music is sad but not this particular piece :D
i lowkey wish there was more of this choir in parasite eve, it sounded so cool
Yeahhh I really wish it came back in
Ikr! I was thinking the same too. I rlly liked it
i keep restarting the song just to hear it, there was definitely room to add it again at the end or something again i think
If you liked this, you'll also like these other traditional Bulgarian choir songs: Kaval Sviri, Pilentse Pee, Shto Li (Alone in the Dark version), Izlel ye Delyo Haydutin (Voyager Golden Record version) and the "main title" soundtrack of Xena: Warrior Princess.
FOR REAL
Probably because I'm from the Balkans, I feel this on a whole different level. Bulgaria has many mountains, same like Bosnia (where I'm from) and these choirs wouldn't have been what they are if it weren't for the mountain ranges that allowed for highlander culture to develop over the centuries. Which is why you'll discover so many old songs tell tales of mountains and highlanders in this fashion.
Bulgarian choirs are one of the highest peaks of music in human history and I'm so grateful that KEXP recorded this and shared with everyone.
хвала брате
Bosnia and Bulgaria have some misterious cultural connection that is on completely another level. Probaly, since migration of Bogomil teachings back in 10-11 century. That's how I as a Bulgarian feel about Bosnia.
Bring me the Horizon - Parasite eve has brought me here.
It feels incredible to hear sounds from my own country in my favourite band's song...

Who would've thought that a Bulgarian folk song about an old man who just wanted to have a good time would be an absolute banger. 👏😊
The Bulgarians?

I can't express this properly. This song is different than anything I have heard before. It is totally different from the music I am used to and the choral style I use, yet I absolutely love it. So unique, so wonderful.

Give Georgian choirs a try, too. It's also xenharmonic, the Iberi Choir is probably the go-to ensemble for introduction to the style
Listen to more folk music then 😅
As a bulgarian bmth fan hearing parasite eve i almost had a heart attack ngl
same
Отначало помислих, че съм пуснал друга песен и проверих сигурно 100 пъти :D
Went to see them in Liverpool in the early nineties. Front row, right in the middle, in a beautiful Cathedral with perfect acoustics, a couple of yards behind the conductor. I could barely breath during the concert. I could hardly talk in the interval. In a lifetime of playing music professionally, nothing has ever affected me as much. It still does the same today. Damned onions!
I absolutely adore stories like these. Thank you for sharing your story with us, cheers!
Must be a genius who hears this and thinks "Yes, this is gonna be metal"
So, BMTH.. huh?

Or a total idiot. I heard this thing you mentioned, and it is an insult to this song.

I just wonder how this came to Oli's recommendations feed. Like honestly, how did BMTH find this hidden gem?
I figured it out: Jack Black did an improvised version to this over a year ago with was uploaded to a Radios Facebook page
@@Ezorus You sleuth, you genius!
The name of the album includes "Survival Horror." a very popular game genre. The name of the song is a game reference, they collabed with a mostly gaming producer and Oli said he spent most of the quarentine gaming...
Look up the game Alone In The Dark 5's soundtrack. The only thing is that the games Oli has referenced before are very popular and beloved, Alone In The Dark as a franchise is popular and beloved but AitD5 sucks and is not very popular... so it would be a very obscure reference. Still the game sucks but its soundtrack is one of the best imo.
I personally found it from a person on Twitter who was talking about song samples and mentioned Wyclef Jean - Mid Life Crisis (grace spelman)
Probably youtube algorithm was just acting up and displaying this to oli's youtube feed.
The song is about this bachelor gradpa who cheekily put his 'kalpak' (an old timey hairy hat) to the side and went to the village. In the village the young ladies were dancing a 'horo' (a traditional Bulgarian dance) and he went to dance as well. Most of the ladies scattered, except for the youngest one Angelina, who stayed. :)
If this is true... thanks a lot for the information.
@@LaKanaeFandubs It's true. Also, I believe the girl's name is Angelina as it comes from Angel, hence her kindness towards the old man.

Why does this song about an old man who goes to dance in a village sound like a hymn for the end of the world???
it wouldn’t if your mind wasn’t associated with #parasiteeve
Lol this is such a common thing with choirs tbh and that’s okay. Fr it’s actually cause these chord structures are heard as “end of the world” type vibes in most “English culture” music so to speak. It’s kind of like the theme of finding Nemo can give you feeeeelz for Nemo and his dad or how a certain smell can take you back to a certain memory. It’s pretty cool the way the mind can work with association. I hope I explained that well 😅

The two women singing this diaphonic chant at 0:46 and then again later give me absolute chills. Like the clang of a bell ringing out over a hillside!

I was fortunate enough to be in the 2019 Colorado Middle School All State Choir, and this was one of the songs we sang. It really made me appreciate Bulgarian choirs and was definitely the most fun song, in my opinion. It's an incredible piece and this is an incredible performance!

No idea what their song means, but gives me goosebumps. Truly music knows no boundaries. Love from India 🇮🇳 ♥️.
This is the beauty display of culture. I love it. Incredible song. Thank you for sharing with the world.
Beautiful ladies with beautiful voices singing a beautiful song! They clearly love singing, and look like they're having a great time. ♥
They do much hard things with smile❤
Conducter lady is so badass! Keeping this beast of sound in full control with such elegance and ease.. respect!
I have searched for this music, now I have found it on RUclips. Brilliant ❤❤❤
This is absolutely magical. I can listen on repeat! My mother's side is of Serbian descent and so proud of this heritage. The two women who sing the diaphonic duet two times, their bright voices singing that dissonant Major 2nd just rings out of the texture of the full ensemble, like the metallic clang of bells sounding out. It gives me goosebumps and I want to listen over and over!
This harmony/chord really sounds like they’re about to drop some fire bars if we didn’t know what they were singing about
Regards from Bulgaria
A song about an old redheaded man shouldn't be so damn haunting
he aint redheaded what
He was red-faced (from drinking too much alcohol).

И ние, българите, сме влюбени в тях, нали са наши :) възхитителни са - да
i just did this at a choral festival and it’s HARD these women are talented !!!
Wow. Stunning. Just otherworldly.
To all the BMTH fans - this roughly translates to English as something like
You wear your hat sideways
One way or another
Sometimes to the left, sometimes to the right
One way or another
Thank you!
Now the question, does BMTH knows that?
Not really. It's about an old man putting his hat sideways and then going to dance the horo, but all girls run away except Angelina.
@@flavouredpeanut9007 well, I was talking specifically about the part that BMTH used in their song, not about whole meaning of original.
My university women's choir performed this when I was in school but we sounded less than 1/10th as amazing as these ladies! I wish we could have done an entire program of Bulgarian folk music. It was the most fun we had learning music all year!
I used to sing this in our school choir (our conductor used to lead school, city and church choirs) and I remember every word from this, I didn’t know it was Bulgarian tho😅 I’m from Republica Srpska 😊

„Ерген деда" е сред най-известните песни на проф. Петър Льондев. Огромен е приносът му и в областта на музикалната фолклористика - като научен сътрудник в Института за изследване на изкуствата при Българска Академия на Науките е записал и нотирал повече от 40 000 народни песни и инструментални мелодии. Поклон пред паметта на проф. Петър Льондев!
Andre Antunes brought me here! These ladies sound amazing as they are, but with heavy guitars they get even spicier!
I adore the subtle but not too subtle vocal and harmonic dissonance
This is an ancient form of polyphonic singing which has been preserved in some regions of the Balkans.
So the lyrics basically sing of a unmarried grandpa (not clear if never married or a widower), who got all dressed up and went down to the village to dance at the unmarried women's "horo" (a traditional Bulgarian dance where dancer form a chain). All for them ran away but the youngest - Angelina (Bulgarian version of Angela). And the grandpa danced with her.
One school of thought is that this is a humorous song about an old coot trying to dance with the young women.
Another school of though is that the old man passed away and this is his afterlife, in which he is dancing with his Angel.
the abstract jazz of Bulgaria
It's a folklor hah almost any song sounds like this
BMTH always start their masterpieces with goddamn outstanding intros
J’avais 17 ans lorsque j’ai entendu ce groupe musical pour la première fois. À l’époque, le mur de Berlin était tombé et ce groupe représentait un symbole de liberté nouvelles.
