I once had the privilege of playing the role of Nellie in South Pacific - and I've always loved Mitzi's performance and was determined to honour the spirit of her portrayal. As I'm an Aussie, it was a HUGE compliment when an American in the audience came up to me after the show and asked where I was from in the US. Her face was priceless when I replied in my usual Aussie accent that I was Australian born. She couldn't believe it - she thought I was pretending to be Australian - and it took a few minutes of conversation to convince her otherwise.
Oh, thank you so much for uploading this! She was so brilliant! The cheerfulness she displays is absolutely infectious! Thank goodness they chose her. No one could have done it better!
They definitely made the right choice: she was perfect for the part. She has a great voice, a warm and appealing personality, and carried off the dramatic moments very well. Sad that she didn't have more and larger roles in film, but at least she had this classic moment in the sun.
This is so cool, you can see in the first minute that she's the one. They casted the right person, Mitzi is perfect. I was 7 years old when I saw the film and I can remember every part of it.
@@robcairns844 We have Doris's loser husband-manager to thank for that, he priced her out of consideration. But if she had done it, we wouldn't have Mitzi's luminous performance. All for the best.
I saw South Pacific in London many years ago and I fell in love with it, and of course, Mitzi. She is so wonderful And keeps on going. Tank you for this rare gem...
@sorrowfulflower This was a little bonus track that came on the DVD set, I thought it was wonderful. I can see why she got the part! I can't imagine anyone else playing it! Thanks so much for watching! Jim
Ok, so I thought this sat a little low for her voice; I just saw in an interview with her that they had her sing in Mary Martin's keys. I wondered why; she makes it work very well, but you don't get the bloom of the voice opening up in its natural higher range with these keys.
@ClassicDamsel I agree with you 100%, Miss Damsel! She is something Special, for sure. Thank you for the wonderful comment and thank you so much for watching! Jim
James McEwan You're right of course James. Something that I noticed immediately was the reduced tempo. Still quite pleasing and no doubt would have worked okay. I will never know however whether I prefer the ultimately filmed tempo because it actually sounds better or just because it's the one I'm familiar with. 🤔
Her performance knocks it out of the park! I saw this movie when I was 11 years old.

Perfect casting! Absolute natural for the role of Nellie! Thanks for posting.

That's what I call a great audition. That's why she got the part. 😊👍🏻
Saw this great musical 60 years ago in Singapore 🇸🇬!!! ❤️🤩👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Besides being a great dancer , Mitzi’s singing voice is very nice ; the only actor in the movie whose voice wasn’t dubbed.
As well as Ray Walston.
Fantastic! And she is still with us!
Not anymore…..😿
This isn't my favorite musical, but all the songs I liked from them she was in! She is a fun personality! :)
I was cruising your posts and landed on this one. Kinda serendipity. Thanks for posting!
I love Mitzi.

Such a beautiful woman. R.I.P.
She pretty much nailed that!

This is interesting as it's sung at a slower tempo than in the movie

OK, you got the job!
I think Mitzi looks prettier here with her hair than in the movie.
The music is slower tempo than the movie version but i love it 😘😘😘😍
Did she sing live for this screen test?
Looking lovely and endlessly better than she does in the film wearing Doris Day's old butch hair-do.
