How to Make Halftone Text Effect with Extrusion in Illustrator

Everybody seems to be doing tutorials for this type of halftone but I have yet to find one for the other type - where the dots aren't gradually becoming bigger/smaller but there's a point in which they just become inverted, if that makes sense. Is that replicable in Illustrator?

Hmm I don't quite understand what you mean. Sounds like you're talking about a dotted pattern
