You all voted! Sunstar had the most votes by the time I had made a decision on the video. Here's Talking about Sunstar, a video about a great ThunderClan leader and his history. We discuss his track record, relationship with his apprentice Bluestar and what his leadership was like.
Sunstar was a cool dude, but I did take issue with his choice of words while confronting Bluepaw. Telling someone who is struggling with grief/depression that they are being a burden on their loved ones is thoughtless at best and downright cruel at worst.
I can't help but wonder that if Bluestar hadn't been taught at a young age to suppress her own feelings in favour of serving the clan; maybe she wouldn't have had such an... extreme reaction to Tigerclaw's betrayal.
It's stuff like that I believe fully the writer's fault. In the clans you basically are constantly on survival mode so even the kinder cats seem sort of out of touch with feelings, fitting in with the world the Erin's built. But of course it's also just a horrible thing think/say at all so...bad writing on their part (not surprising), makes you like a generally good character less...which happens a lot

Yeah it definitely made me raise an eyebrow when he was trying to convince Bluestar to move past her grief. Within the setting of Warrior Cats makes sense but saying someone dealing with depression is a burden was certainly a choice.
I understand the context but we the readers know she has depression (and by extension how to be supportive of people with it) and it doesn’t mesh well together imo.

yup timeskips made Bluestar see two leaders entire time as leaders before she became a leader i thought leaders were supposed to live longer then normal cats XD

I dont see it like that I just think a long time passed between his time as leader and when she became leader. We see patchpelt was an elder in the first book and he was about a season older than bluestar so im guessing he lived as long as most leaders do.
@@BugsyBugYT If you mean Pinestar, she was born at the end of his leadership. According to his novella he lost his eighth life while she was a new warrior and then he retired so she really only saw one full leadership.
I'm having mixed opinions on Sunfall/star giving Bluepaw/fur the advice to just move on with life after losing her mother and her sister. There's a reason so many cultures in antiquity have ritualized mourning periods, and that's because it's a community effort to help ease the process of grief for those close to the deceased. It's really not fair to expect a grieving individual to just get back to work or get over it in a week, and with how mentally anthropomorphized these cats are, I wouldn't expect them to be so either.
This proposition I have for a ritualized mourning period for Clan culture is heavily inspired by the Jewish mourning ritual, and I'd recommend looking into that and other mourning rituals from other cultures for inspiration.
Those closest to the deceased (family and close friends) will keep vigil on the night before the burial, but once the burial is over, the mourning period begins. Mourners will abstain from going on patrols or performing their duties for nine days (in the cases of the leader mourning, the deputy performs their duties; for deputies, a temporary deputy is instated for the nine days; for med cats, they better have an apprentice or they can borrow another Clan's med cat for a spell). They will eat along with the elders, queens, and kittens before the non-mourning warriors and apprentices. After the nine days are up, the mourners will return to their duties, but they're still focused on grieving, so they will not attend any full moon gatherings (half-moon gatherings are fine tho) and there will be no ceremonies focused around them for one full moon cycle (warrior assessments will be postponed, as will warrior and apprenticeship ceremonies, and they cannot be chosen to be deputy or mentor until their mourning period is over).
After this period is over, they are fully reintegrated back into society, but still perform small rituals and prayers for easing the grief and moving on.

Sunstar's parts are some of my favorites in BP. I like the idea of a normally peaceful and level-headed leader placing too much trust in battle hungry cats but and just doesn't learn
I like sunstar. I wish mentor apprentice relationships were touched on more. He shaped bluestar. We never see any of brackenfur or dustpelt's apprentices take on the den building role, sandstorm's become some of the best hunters, or mosewhisker's and hazeltail's become less xenophobic. Berrynose got his mentor's temper though. I do like seeing apprentices become friends with or are in scenes with their mentors for example poppyfrost being on a lot of thornclaw's patrols, hollyleaf and brackenfur both being chosen for the sol patrol, ivypool and twigbranch still seeming close on that squirrelflight's hope patrol, and sparkpelt and cherryfall seen sitting together. I also like seeing apprentices grief for they're mentors eaglewing for ambermoon in squilf's book, ambermoon for spiderleg is mentioned, ivypool I think bows her head for snowbush,bthornclaw may have grieved for briarlight, greystripe for lionheart, firestar for bluestar and then cinderpelt, cinderpelt for yellowfang, lefapool for cinderpelt, yellowfang for sagewhisker, and not bristlefrost

Sunstar’s name is Sunsun/Starstar like how “Twigbranch” is “Stickstick” and no amount of “ACKSHUALLY CatS dOn’t KnoW thEy’re tHe SaMe” like I got during my Instagram days will convince me otherwise.

I love Dad Sunstar way more then the love intrest Sunstar. That time was weird lol. But overall I think that Sunstar made the wrong choice with Bluefur as deputy. Bluefur proved over time that she struggles with grief a lot (which is not a shame, to make it clear). First with Moonflower deaths as a ´paw as well after Snowfurs death as a warrior. So choosing her shortly after her kits got "killed" and giving her a position of power where you need to have a clear head, is a bit... questionable. But maybe he chose her because of the close bond to her. I like the idea that his feelings made him overlook all of that.
Grieving over your loved ones is not a bad trait. If Bluefur was given more time to properly deal with her grief, than I feel she would have been fine. Warrior cats rarely have downtime. They’re always working. Sunstar and Stormtail basically tell Bluefur that she needs to stop moping around and get back to work after her mother and sister died horribly. It’s kind of messed up really…
@@Moony1568 never said it is a bad trait, I said that a leader should be clear minded and Bluestar wasnt at that time, cause she still grieved. The life of a warior is full of loses, friends or family. Thats why I dont think that Bluefur, how she was shown in her book, was a good choice. Other warriors lost loved ones too and where able to get back to their paws faster as Bluefur. With every lost that Bluefur had, she grieved for moons and was in a bad temper. Again, it is not a bad thing to grief but the way Bluefur was grieving is not a trait a leader should have.

Maybe I’m misremembering, but didn’t Sunstar admit to Bluefur that he wasn’t going to appoint Thistleclaw as deputy, nor was he planning to at any point? I thought he did because I remember thinking, “Oh, good, something you could’ve mentioned to her YESTERDAY!!” Before she had to give up her kits I mean. Anyway, just wondering. Plus, Moonflower made the comment in StarClan when Mosskit died that maybe being appointed with new responsibilities would change Thistleclaw into a more responsible cat. They were arguing about Bluefur giving up her kits for the good of the clan.
I really want AU (if a map of fanfic exists already let me know!) of Thistlestar, with Tigerclaw as his deputy. the chaos would be riveting

I honestly can't see Sunfalls way of handling bluepaws grief as acceptable. He kind of just quilt tripped and implied that she is a bad person if she (a child) doesn't get sadness together.
I don't remember him actually saying anything useful or kind after the first few sentences

I think that Sunstar giving Bluestar a life for Caution would've been good, or possibly respect or peace. Any of those three, plus the ones suggested in the vid, would've been more suited to his leadership.
