  • This video is designed to be an educational tool for the development of smooth bellows technique . Musical phrasing with bellows control is the nemesis of many accordionists & no one can better explain good performance practice on such an important subject. The great Willard Palmer said, "What I learned from Galla-Rini was, first of all, how to use the bellows. He was a perfectionist in this regard. He taught me that every sign & every mark on the music must be meticulously observed, & that all these various dynamic indications could be accomplished through proper handling of the bellows." Please join the legend himself as he teaches & offers several simple exercises for smooth phrasing & dynamics through correct bellows control. (Recorded 1991)

Brilliant video. I'm currently 81 years old and started playing the accordion when I was about age 12. Professional accordionists ask me how I can make an inexpensive accordion sound better than their more expensive professional one. I show them exactly what Mr. Galla-Rini is doing above. Now it's true that violinists call the bow's techniques "bowing." I once made the mistake of calling bellows techniques "bellowing" and got a lot of laughter. I never made that mistake again. It rightfully is "phrasing & bellows control." Thank you for posting this video.

I started at 7 years old and now 76. I had some good instructors including for a brief time Gala Rini. My very first couldn't play accordion and filled in until an accordion teacher jad an opening. That teacher played violin and he spent a lot of time with phrasing and dynamics.Later when Gala Rini taught me he asked if I played violin.... he was impressed with my phrasing. The bellows of an accordion is a big advantage in playing. It is not just an air pump to make sound. Few instruments are capable of the nuances of sound it cam provide BUT in the hands of a skilled musician.

This video is a pleasant surprise. I had some lessons with Anthony at his Glendale home many years ago. I should have paid more attention to his outstanding instruction.

You certainly are a very privileged individual. I wish I'd had that opportunity because I had terrible teachers for the most part.
