Ukraine's pilots training as fast as they can to be ready for F-16s

  • Select Ukrainian pilots and technicians are currently working overtime to master the ins and outs of the F-16's advanced system. This new video shared on X by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shows his country's pilots training at Denmark's Skrydstrup air base.
Training for these jets typically takes at least 8 months for new pilots - but time is not on Ukraine's side, and training has had to be accelerated.
"The duration of the training that we are going through is really short compared to any country training for the F-16 in peacetime, it really takes a lot, lot more but we all are motivated to go back to Ukraine and start fighting on those jets," said a Ukrainian pilot with the callsign "Moonfish."
The F-16 has proven to be a step up for Ukrainian pilots, who are used to flying older, less advanced aircraft.
"It is a really super fun jet to fly," Moonfish said. "I'm not saying that MIG that I flew before is super boring, but the F-16 is definitely more agile."
One Ukrainian technician in the video said at first, the F-16's system seemed 'incomprehensible' and 'unrealistic' for Ukraine - but throughout training, he realized the aircraft's efficiency and the advantage it will provide. Ukraine has been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the F-16 since last July, when the U.S.,Denmark, and the Netherlands announced an international coalition to bolster the Ukrainian Air Force.
Having the F-16 in its arsenal will allow Ukraine to strengthen its air defenses and fend off Russian planes attacking Ukraine's front-line soldiers. Scripps News' Jason Bellini reports.

The aircrew have by far the most demanding tasks to learn. Maintainers will love life compared to fixing fossils. F-16s are easy to learn how to maintain and to work on in austere conditions. Anyone transitioning from older airframes with much more labor-intensive systems will have an easy time converting as I did from fixing Phantoms. Proximity to European bases means parts won't be difficult to ship and items requiring back shop or depot repairs will be simple to truck or airlift back and forth.

US warplanes operate as part of a network of ground, sea, land and space assets. It's hard to see how Ukrainians are going to integrate into that network as well as a native English speaker who's had years of training, simulator time and real life maneuvers.
If Ukraine doesn't run out of meat first, the F16s will either be kept out of real combat or be shot down their first few sorties.

How many years did you work on, with or fly Vipers and in what capacity? They aren't integrating into the US combined arms network they're integrating into their own established network with their own controllers etc. Ukraine is used to much more awkward, primitive systems while Vipers are quite user friendly. (I've roughly 22 years working A/B/C/D/CJs and four previous on Bronco and Phantom for comparison.)

I know they have no choice, but a fighter pilot only becomes "good" after *years* of training and experience. It simply cannot be rushed; the good ones reach a level where they don't think, they simply react. These guys will probably be competent at getting into the air, firing the missile, then bugging out for home, but that is about it. With Russia now shooting down 9/10 Storm Shadows sent to Crimea, this will not change anything. Not to mention Russia has drones watching most every air base in Ukraine, and nobody can stop Mr. Iskander.

Some of the pilots may already have flight experience, albeit in different airframes (MiG29s and SU 27s). It's more of a matter of transitioning from a Soviet jet to NATO standard one, especially with language, later the avionics/controls, tactics and maintenance systems.
As much as Russian determination and perseverance should not underestimated, so too Ukrainians in their abilities in adaptability and ingenuity, especially given their lack of supplies. They're quick and creative learners. Remember, they were able to deploy 155mm artillery systems starting from May '22, acquired HIMARs on June '22 and then were able to operate and field Western Main Battle tanks (Leopard 2s, and Challenger 2s, mainly, M1 Abrams arrived much, much later) in under 9 months, which at least should take less than 2 at the minimum to train. If that level of adaptability (+ speed) impressive, I don't know what is, especially for a country at war.
P.S. I almost forgot, NASAM and patriot missile systems are still present, so those Iskanders still need to strike at an angle where interception is difficult or impossible, or, more often than not, send more missiles than these Western supplied SAM systems to overwhem them. In addition, unless the Ukrainians neglect and don't account for it, it wouldn't be surprising that while F16 pilots are training, they're establishing infrastructure to support those airframes, at the same time, preparing counter measures for possibility of such cruise and ballistic missiles.
Edit: checked spelling and spacing added more details.

It was necessary to select candidates for retraining on the F-16 from Ukrainian civilian pilots. They have good English, experience flying foreign planes, extensive flying experience. They chose people with little experience, no experience in foreign technology, with zero English (the problem of learning a language is TIME). Learning to fly combat missions is MUCH easier and will take LESS time than learning a language. The decision to select candidates was NOT made by a PILOT. How many Ukrainian pilots have been prepared?????????????
