    Just a word of warning about microwaving them….if you read the instructions on wrap-n-zap (100% cotton batting) it states that you should heat in one-minute increments and be aware that there is always the potential for fires to occur because it isn’t flame retardant or fire proof. Just an FYI…..

      @@SewtheDistance Yes. I cut fabric without darts. Cut batting with darts. (I use Bosal 100% organic cotton, thinner and works great). Place batting on wrong side of fabric and quilt. Sew darts using cut area of batting as a guide. Put quilted fabric right sides together and sew around top leaving a turn opening. Clip and trim. Turn, fuss and iron around sides and top. Topstitch around edge catching and closing the turn opening. Sometimes I topstitch around twice or decoratively. I would send a picture but this iPad is giving me fits about it.

    I’ve had both the large and small bowl cozies (came as a set) for over a year and still haven’t used them - YET!!! But u sure can see all kinds of uses for them. I’m the hostess for my quilt guild for Christmas so I try to think of things to do for each year along with the plates, etc. and table decorations. These bowls would be super for each member to have at their seating place (luckily we are around 20 or so members!!) NEXT YEAR!!! And they don’t have to be in any holiday fabrics so could be used any time - how about holding those smaller spools of thread that keep rolling off the table? Or other small notions that we (OK I) tend to cover up on my table with other “ stuff! So many uses - and then there are M&Ms, wrapped candies, etc😄😄😄😄😄

    Dear Kris,
    Happy Christmas Eve Eve. I hope you are having a fun evening. This is a bowl cozy or cozy bowl update. The last one. Maybe. The first one made with toy trains for my brother in law (test subject), actually kind of looks like a four ear flaps railroad engineer hat for cats. Very cute. I did one for my sister today with hot air balloons printed on the fabric which turned out better. I quilted the other one before sewing together and it probably made the cozy smaller. Now boyfriend wants a microwavable tortilla warmer instead. That's tomorrow's project. Take care Marion

  • @Carol_Sews

    I tried Wrap-N-Zap batting. I washed it first following the instructions on the package. The shrinkage made the batting very thick, so I used just one layer in the test cozy I made. I quilted it to the outside layer. I don’t have the plastic template so I used a free template I found on the Internet. It had square corners, so I rounded them. The Internet template started as a 10-inch square, and it ended up being too small for a Corelle cereal bowl. It did fit a Corelle rice bowl, so I heated some water in the bowl to test whether one layer of the Wrap-N-Zap was enough to protect my hands from the hot bowl. I could feel a little warmth through the fabric, but I would be able to hold the bowl comfortably, while the bowl without a cozy would burn my hands. I did not put the Wrap-N-Zap in the microwave. It has a microwave time limit in order to prevent fires. I’ll have to make another test cozy starting with an 11 inch square. I’m not sure my family would use these, but I have lots of older fabric to use for a project like this. Thanks for the idea Kris.

      @@SewtheDistance I contacted Pellon to ask how many layers of Wrap-N-Zap I should use in a cozy. Their reply came today. They said one layer. Their package says you can’t put more than two layers together, and it takes two layers to make a seam (or dart). I guess that means I should press my darts open. Soaking the batting in hot water to shrink it really does make it thick. I think you and I are both researchers.

      @@Carol_Sews I have the Wrap N Zap packaging and I don't see anywhere on the package where it states you can't put 2 pieces of Wrap N Zap together. 🤔 I looked on their website and the wording is:
      "Do not use MORE than two layers of the batting, even at the seams." It doesn't say you can't use 2 layers, it says more than 2 together. I would contact them again for clarification because the website suggests you can use 2 layers of batting, but not more than 2.🤷‍♀️

    • @Carol_Sews
      @Carol_Sews 5 месяцев назад

      @@lindascraftsandthings915 Their email to me repeated what the package says. I think they meant that if you use two layers of the batting, you could end up with more than two layers at a seam. By preshrinking, I had batting that became thicker, so one layer was enough to make a cozy. I have since purchased Quilters Dream cotton, which does not have a scrim, so I will be testing that out with two layers of batting. I do not plan to ever microwave a cozy.
