- Come underwater and watch how different swimbaits move in the water! Paddle tails, wedge tails, and glide baits, are all fish catchers in cold water, but not on every lake. Here are the details you need to know so you choose the right baits for your fishing.
We spend the majority of our time in Winter talking about Wedge tail swimbaits. This style of bait is the most effective in the majority of situations... but that's just the surface of the subject. Today we're going in-depth and looking at how glide baits and paddle tails can also benefit you in the cold water months.
Below you'll find links to the baits discussed in the video. We've listed them in the order they appeared, have included our favorite colors for each, as well as any rigging components you may need to fish them effectively.

Matt always knocks it out of the park.!! Excellent video.!! I spend 25 minutes watching the video then an hour in the description poking thru all of the tackle. The best fishing channel imo
Agreed. He is the best RUclips Instructor I’ve seen on fishing
I think a very beneficial video would be WHEN TO NOT THROW A BIG BAIT. like certain things you look for that tell you it's not conducive for the big bait.
Agree
Always throw a big bait!
When there isn’t a feeding window or extremely dirty water.
This comment is it! Would love to see this video!
@@morganyoder4277 are u matt or tim?
I really want to get into big baits this year so I’m going to be rewatching a bunch oh your videos!
Ever since finding your channel, my confidence, fishing style, and success have dramatically changed. I bought blade baits because of you months ago, fished them for months nothing....then I hammer 20+ fish on them including a 5lb class fish and lose a true trophy at the boat. These videos are the easy button for becoming a power fisherman in my base.
Spinners are about the only lure I throw with regularity - I'll tie on a couple other lures to switch it up, but the spinner bait is such an effective and versatile lure that you don't really need anything else. Unless the fish aren't biting lol
You guys are the best fishing information on the tube!! Hands down keep it up
At 5:04 it's cool seeing you guys fish out of an old boat with the carpet ripped up. early days
I enjoy these videos and since I've implemented techniques I've caught my 2 pb in 2 trips a 5lb spot and at 6.5 lb largemouth each trip I've thrown these baits they have yielded bigger fish yes it difficult fishing sometimes but the reward is worth the time.
Hands down,TB is the premier bass fishing resource/channel on planet earth 🌎
Always love to see the subtle (and in some case not so subtle) differences that really hit you with that underwater footage. It’s great to see WHY certain presentations may work better at certain times.
Thanks for your work on this as it really helps in deciding the which/when/where when zeroing in on the bass!👍
Great info, new ideas to try in my situations!!!
It is great to have really knowledgeable guys doing this; I have learned lots on this channel!👍👏
Thanks , I love fishing swimbaits Great Tips👊
Awesome! Appreciate you sharing!
I needed this video, I'm going hud fishing this weekend at Indian Valley Reservoir. Im PUMPED!
Do any good? I haven't been up there since a decade before the fires
I've been loving the Savage Gear gills with the wedge tail in all the sizes, haven't got any bites on the trout yet tho. I like the Huddleston gill too but the Savage Gear have pleasantly surprised me
❤️Thank you Matt,that was absolutely POWERFUL 👏👏👏
Thank you Ken!
Great information. Thanks so much for sharing. Looking forward to catching a biggen on some of those swimbaits.
Good stuff Matt, thanks for sharing
Love this video and the insight into it.
Great great great informative video. Thanks for sharing.
Great video with some awesome info. Loved the underwater footage. Maybe you guys can do a video of just underwater footage of bass striking swimbaits. That would be pretty cool to watch. Thanks for sharing. Tightlines and cheers 🍺 my friend.
Great info as always 🔥
Best fishing channel for tips %100
love the under water footage!
Great video guys.
Thanks!
Excellent!
I'd love to hear your big swimbait approach for stained, muddy, blown-out water!
Throw a jig lol.

6" scottsborro with a 8/0 flashy spin.wake it just under surface parallel fast fast fast all the way to the back.the closer the better.get yo neck broke.lol
Watch more of theirs swimbait videos, they’ve talked about it all
Great video, thank you for always having great content. What decking is on your boat? I love the look of it.
Do you use an 8” bait to draw fish to an area and then follow up with something smaller
love the tutorial. please tell us about your boat sometime. thanks.
I got a couple of the stealth swimmer lures to see how they work. I hear their awesome an what makes them even better you have the hooks submerged an come out when fish bites. These lures you can throw in pads or grass so they'll be awesome to catch quality fish.
20 people just pulled up a Clearlake map looking for RC's rock pile to be labeled. Lol.
LOL
Morning Matt and Tim. Your channel is awesome, thank you. Rod question for you. Ever reviewed, tried or have an opinion on Phenix M1 Casting Rods. I am thinking about trying them, but would like someone's POV before I order.
Speaking of budget rods, I'm very fond of the Okuma Guide Select Xtra Heavy/ Fast 7'11" Swimbait rod. It handles my A-rig needs and most all my larger swimbait needs like a champ, with a 2-10 oz lure rating.
I got one too. They are amazing rods.
I almost definitely spend far less on rods and reels than 90% of bass fishermen. I only buy the Walmart Special - a good 6' medium action Shakespeare and a Zebco closed face; comes spooled with 8lb fluorocarbon. It's a cheap setup, but I've caught monster steelheads and my PB 4' channel cat on em. So, unless you NEED a specific rod to impart a specific action to your lure, i think the vast majority of guys spend way too much on tackle.
@@hanburgundy4317 can you throw a 4 -6 oz swimbait on that?
@Brian Detherow
Probably - I don't see why not. I throw big spinners with a swim bait trailer, no problem.
@@hanburgundy4317 I don't think so on that 6 foot rod and 8 pound line.
Awesome video. I have a question for you guys. Ice out in a natural lake. They stock a lot of the lake in the fall for ice fishing with trout. What would use for ice out. Thank you
I know you guys have fished all over the US and other countries, how about a video of like top 3 baits for each state or region?
have you guys used the new spro KGB chad shad I have some of the original OG KGBs and they are awesome would be cool to see a review of the new spro version from you guys
Yes we have 👍🏼A little more testing to go before we form a final opinion.
@@tacticalbassin awesome I’m yet to get one the custom ones are legit and super good chopping style baits so I’ll be waiting for that final opinion I’m sure the plastic SPRO ones could come in handy since they are semi transparent unlike custom resin baits
Thanks for the info brother. I was at Watts bar Lake last year didnt do very well. Are you guys taking anyone on guided trips at Chickamauga? Im usually in Sweetwater Tenn. every 4th july for a week visiting my uncles farm. I would enjoy traking a trip with you or Tim.
That S-Waver story i knew you were gonna show this clip. I always wondered what you kept looking back at. I fished this rockpile many times and did well on it up until the drought.
I was looking back at the boat next to me that was facing the other way and oblivious to what I was doing. 😂
How do you like that 13 fishing reel compared to others? I see lots of people making the switch to that reel now. Is it all about the 40lb drag?
Thanks for everything guys!
Do you guys ever use aftermarket reel handles, like the ones from Gomexus, for big baits?
So concerning whether to fish shallow or deep running baits, if the max depth is only 7-8 feet then baits like the mag draft should be ok all winter long?
What about dragging a Hud instead of reeling? Do you find that the rod moves the bait more/faster than the reel does? Or is it a reasonable substitute if you're the type who has a tough time slowing down?
I would love to get your take on Swimbaits on Cumberland
You guys want a challenging fishery, I would love to see Matt and Tim breakdown Neely Henry here in Alabama on the Coosa River chain.....
Does some of this apply to fishing rivers?
Is it possible to rig the weedless Hud Deluxe with a stinger hook w/o hurting the action, so it could be fished in any scenario?
Hey Matt, You've said you throw a Sunline Saltimate leader, which Saltimate product do you use as a leader material? The Saltimate Tunageat or the Saltimate FC System Shock Leader? What pound test leader do you use with your 80lb MaxCuatro line? Thanks.
Going back to the roots!
Yeah buddy! Is this THE Tim Eaves?? If so, it's good to hear from you!
@@tacticalbassin SWIM-BAIT brother!
Yeah buddy! It's been a long time! I hope you're doing well!!
Do you guys use rebel deep weeR? its the best crankbait iv'e ever used!!!!!!!!
Imagine having so many hot lures that you take your hooks off them and put the lure away when you catch too many fish on them 🎣🔥😳🥺😍
One rod and reel budget combo for swim baits treble and jig hooks?
I tried fishing one of these winter baits in my part of the country but it just slid across the top of the ice.
You have to cast higher for the full punching effect 😂
What if you have a lot of algae and vegetation on bottom? I would drag through so much stuff
Matt/ What size & weight Beast Hook do you use on the Magdraft Freestyle/
Matt can you do a video on lay lake off the coosa River in Alabama
Do you think a dobyn's sierra series, 7' 6" heavy, would be able to throw the savage gear 8" trout. I'm a young angler with only a few do all rods and can't afford a specialized rod at the moment
where would you put the 7" citizen in the winter swimbait catagories? not an option? to much action? the warmer day bottom contact with the magdraft as a compliment?
What zodias model were y’all using in this video for the 6 inch burrito? Also wondering if y’all have any rod recommendations for the ganterel jr, I seem to be pulling hooks with jig rod and want a dedicated light swimbait setup.
I was looking at the Dobyns champ xp 794. I love my 806 and 807.
Which lake were you at filming this video? Background looks familiar
Awesome, a video building off of previous information. Giving your viewers credit that they can evolve and make good decisions based on conditions. Straying away from the same ol information. I applaud you.
100%
When the fish are in 4 to 10 feet how do yo think a bluegill style soft swimbait would work?
If you're using the Storm LiveEye ones, they work wonders. I've caught bass, walleye, pickerel, huge shiners, and even trout on the little sunfish ones (so hard to find, anymore - I swear, every lure that really works they stop making).
Can the suspenstrips be removed?
Thanks Matt! How can I reach you to ask a question regarding my disability and fishing?
Hey Matt @Tacticalbassin. I'm just getting into the big baits ... I've already purchased a phenix ultra swimbait classic rod 8H but wanted to ask what reel you'd recommend I pair it with. I'll prob use it to chunk 6-8" baits like the Savage gear and Hud. Willing to spend $250-$300. Also want to know if the combo could be used for the s waiver as well or do I need a lighter tip rod or diff combo altogether....fishing reservoirs here in SoCal.
How do you like that rod? I’m a big fan of Phenix rods I have 2 of the Feather’s. I almost bought that rod but got the 7’6” XH Expride B. I use mainly soft Swimbaits. The Tranx 300 is a great reel
@Ryan Smith ... love them to death bro! I've got a pretty good collection of Phenix rods (20+ rods) spinners and casting....everything from their ultralight (elixirs and dragonfly for panfish and trout) ( recons, feathers, ultras, and M1s for bass) all the way up to their black diamonds series for the extra little "umph" and backbone. I bought my first one and was hooked!! I live 5 minutes from their warehouse and often find myself in there playing around with their products, and sometimes do warranty exchanges if/when needed (I've had a few missteps in the boat and landed on some tips)
Yeah I saw under Matt's post he listed the Tranx. I may just go that route. I was looking at a few lexas too. What size swimbait are you chuckin?
@Ryan Smith those feathers are awesome too. Unbelievably light with some backbone I've got one paired woth a 3000 sustain and it balances well. Liked it so much I went back and bought more of those ...I think i have a tatula on one of the others
Dark Sleeper.
My home lake is having a HUGE fish kill. Mostly crappies and bluegills but I've found some 7lbrs dead with some 3lbrs, would u even waste your time fishing a fish kill?
When do you use a leader and when do you not use one? Are you using one with these baits and how long?
They have a video you can search for and watch regarding your question.
Most I spend on a lure is a pack of Gary Senko’s
Try the diawa dx swimbait rod
We have them 👍🏼
@@tacticalbassin is RC in the oaks arm?
Just moved to Clearlake…
The dobyns is a broomstick of a rod. Use that as my jig hook and the 795 fury for trebles. Really interested in the st Croix bass x swimbait models.
Hey Matt...Does Benno still make the Trash Fish? Anyone know?
Yes 👍🏼
@@tacticalbassin My grandpa from Wisconsin was named Benno!👍🏻🙌🏻
Hi
Low
Important to not overlook where your hooks are on the baits. You're going to want the hooks on the tops of all bottom dragging swimbaits if you don't have livescope or clear water, to know where you are above the bottom. 🤙
I wonder how the trash fish would perform if it was poured with silicone.
If you want a bait to crawl across bottom, why use swimbait and not a bifflebug with a soft plastic minnow bait?
If I buy something from Tactical Bassin warehouse will my private info be stolen again??
I assume you mean Tackle Warehouse? That was a one time breach that was dealt with a long time ago. I'll bet I've placed 25 orders since then and haven't had a single issue. 👍🏼
What's he talking about? Can you repeat that?
5:25 If that's not a giant face in the whole sky then I don't know what it is!
