We used Maya (educational license) for 3D renders, After Effects for compositing and VFX, and Premiere for editing the space film “Flight to the Universe”. After the films are done, we’re switching over to Blender for our videos because the program has all the video pipeline in 1, and it’s free to use!

As much as I love these info videos, I would love to learn these stuff as well. Can you please please make tutorials of how you would go about creating a scene involving vfx. From starting to end. Maybe start a series where you create different scenes. This would help us so much. Thanks for all the info tho. You're the best vfx channel I've come across.

I can say that by my self because I am a student at SAE Institute studying Game Art and 3D Animation paying a lot of money for my education and basically everything you say sounds familiar and is true... The only difference in between my university and this youtube channel is that it is free... So guys listen carefully and take note of every single word spoken ;)

Problem for some of us is we don't know where to start cuz there's normally so much to choose from. I personally got to loving cinematography because of your contents. Your ability to tell stories with such intense emotions and delicate intuition make your work so alive and it tells how much attention you pay details. I actually fell in love with cinematography and 3D rendering as a result and considering a career in it in addition to my current job but I don't know where to start. As my inspiration, where would you prescribe I start from?

As a 3D character artist (for games mostly) my pipeline is the following:
    1. Sculpt the high poly in Zbrush.
    2. If my character wear any kind of textiles, I make the base on Marvelous Designer then add fine details on Zbrush.
    3. Retopologize on 3D Coat or Maya, If I have some hard surface parts to make I choose Maya because I make those hard surface parts there as well, and retopologize them right after.
    4. UV unwrap/ mapping on Maya.
    5. Texture my character on Substance Painter.
    6. Render it on Marmoset Toolbag and either Unity or Unreal Engine.
(I used 3Ds Max instead of Maya some time ago because its beginner friendly so it was the first 3D modeling software I Iearnt, but since I then chose to go into character design specifically, Maya is better for my needs.)

Andrey, Andrey, Andrey! Brilliant as usual. I presented a very similar description of these tools years ago to the students I used to teach in a game development course (of course now there are far more options to us artists), and it's awesome that now I can just point anyone with the same questions to this video! Your well rounded, and non-biased explanation reveals how you care about your viewers making sound and educated decisions themselves, for their own path, and not simply based on someone else's opinions or emotions.

I continue to watch your videos because I hope that one day I have the budget to communicate with talent like you on projects like yours. However, I did not know you primarily use premiere pro for video editing and I would deeply appreciate videos or live broadcasts where we can see how you use premiere pro. I started learning PP after the make the cut competition a while back. Everything I did in my vid I taught myself in 20 days via youtube tutorials. It would be great to see someone like you dive deeper into PP capabilities. I don't know how to get this video out of you but even if you popped up a live feed next time you are on a project, that would be awesome. Thanks Andrey and cheers brother.

    Great video!
I agree to some extent with your opinion on Houdini. However I think that it is an amazing modeling tool, but not for "hero models". Because of its highly procedural nature, Houdini is amazing at making models that you can customize and change, potentially making thousands of iterations of. Let us say that you are making a bookshelf. Then the client tells you he wants it taller and with thinner books in. In a traditional 3D application that may result in you having to do a lot of work. If you have modeled smart in Houdini however, there may be as little as changing the value of 2 - 3 sliders.

I'm a 3D Artist for an American Fortune 500 company. We use Cinema 4D (plus the Octane render engine) to model and render our products because it's easy and fast. But you're right, Cinema 4D isn't cheap. However, it is economically viable because our team of 4 CGI artists (plus 5 others who are working in a web-based 3D render engine) create roughly 50 images a day, 260 working days a year on average. Utilizing CGI in favor of studio photo shoots has saved - on average - about $2.8 Million per year in studio (and location) photography costs prior to the day when the company did not have a CGI team.

Nuke is perfect if you work with some other people on the same project.. cause how the node tree is constructed, everyone can see, what you did there, and without any effort tweek it. you can also make some windows around the nodes and label them for more information. but if you work alone on way smaller projects without so many levels, AE is the easiest way :)
Ps is a must.. everyone should know basics of blending layers .. so if you go into 3D and compositing, you know how some things work. besides.. you have to understand light, because lighting and texturing go hand in hand.. so some basics in photography could do the job :)
Love your work, and i don't find the time to go back to 3d and vfx.. i am still inspired. thx dude! Keep up!

The most interesting majors for me are game art and hardsurface modelling. About 2 months ago I was using 3DS Max primarily as my modeling software. I had to start using Maya because university and my internship required it and first I was confused that certain things were so overly complicated to achieve. For example, the poly mirror tool always needs to be adjusted and take some time to fit (adjusting the merge threshold and set up other options like object orientation). This kind of things add up over time and you always looking for ways to speed up your workflow. Also the lack of a stack modifier for organizing operations is quite annoying.
However, Maya really excels when it comes to customizing your UI and setting up Hotkeys, which in comparison is a total nightmare in 3DS Max. Also PlugIns and Scripts are a fine addition to the software and because of that I added Maya to my arsenal.

Houdini is actually a great tool for modeling thins that needs to be simulated. It allows for precision and control over all the brick gaps in a building; when it comes to simulation it provides unparallel flexibility. It also gives you an option of Houdini Indie for only $269 per year which give all the function of the $7000 Houdini FX (render up to 4K)!

@Andrey Lebrov: there is a Cinema subscription model!
It's called MSA - you buy the package you like once and then it will be a fraction of this cost on a yearly basis. (studio is ca. 3000€, MSA is 600€ for Studio. check it - it will save you money)

Cinema 4d has rental, and it's a rent to own system is you don't miss any payments. but it's in 6 month increments i think. they don't advertise it much

Great vid... very comprehensive and can't think of any programs that you missed (in the cg/vfx space). On another note... I just decided to finally have a look at Houdini and Cinema4D (was installing Houdini whilst watching this) Got to say that the experience of getting the software on my computer to try out the software... and tackle the "learning wall" was beautiful and so easy...
BUT Cinema4D... omg... no subscription... no apprentice/free learning option... no indie licensing option... and only available through resellers!!! felt like I was back a decade ago... god even Adobe and Autodesk have moved on... from what I hear it is a great software but that brickwall licensing approach :(
