An animation talking to animators, talking about animating... LOVE IT. This is good content for anyone wanting to get into the process of film making :-)
I've heard so many people say stuff like "CG Animation killed 2D animation because it's cheaper to make" or "It's just computer generated so it's not as artistic as hand-drawn animation". Absolutely not true! The animators spend so much time to make sure that every frame looks beautiful and amazing, and it's one several-year giant group project to do it. There is no "Animate Button", and "computer generated" doesn't mean there's any less work. Every frame is designed, controlled, inspected, touched up, and scrutinized (and it's not an exaggeration-- literally every single frame is looked at closely. Those "everything wrong with ____" videos really annoy me because of that lol) How to Train Your Dragon took 165 million to make, Tangled took 260 million.... it takes a lot of time and labor to make these fantastic films. 2D Animation is of course also beautiful, but I don't believe CG is any less artistic than those beautiful classics. We've reached a time when CG film is just as versatile and flexible as 2D with the help of creative, problem-solving minds (i.e. The Peanuts Movie, Zootopia, Paperman, etc.) Those are my 2 cents. Oh, also they didn't include rendering for some reason, rendering is the final step in which the computer has to calculate the light reflections and refractions in every frame so it doesn't look wireframe/grayscale/flat colored like it does in the software. Each frame can take anywhere from several hours to days to render, which is a lot considering each 1 second of screentime has at least 24 frames in it. For Pixar to render Monsters University, it took them over 100 million CPU hours. Most studios buy a large collection of computers, or a "render farm", to make the process go much faster.
I know this has been done a million times but I need one for myself to look at 1. Story 2. Art 3.Modeling 4.Rigging 5.Surfaces 6.Rough layout 7. I just have to say - I'm so glad that Dreamworks made this - EVEN if just for the few who would need it. (And of course, for the ones who would find joy in gawking at it :)
As someone who wants to be an animator when they grow up, this is SO COOL!! SO HELPFUL!!! I knew most of these, but some departments I had no idea existed!
I just turned 16 and I am in college. I am watching this for my 3D animation class for digital media. I am working on this at 9:49 PM. My mother walked in (scaring me) and saw what I'm watching and she said "I thought you were doing homework." :(
Enceos lol nah it still is QUITE an issue. thats why companies have render farms so they can speed up the process of production. im working in animation right now and a scene with say 400 frames if all set up and lighted can take 3 days to a week to render depending on the project scope. try to render a scene from UP on your computer and watch it sit there for about a month or so trying to compute all those photons lol its not so much computer being faster its the graphics cards ability to actually read whats being computed by the porgram and then trying to make it into a format thats easier to view at your local movie theater. while at the same time keepig a very high standard of quality. so its actually become more expensive, but as you can imagine all the millions poured into hollywood can pay for things like this.
_"Computers are pretty fast these days, rendering's not an issue anymore."_ Dude, are you serious? Have you ever tried to render a professional 3D-clip on a regular computer. It fucking sucks to do, boo.
Ever since my studio shifted to Redshift rendering we've gotten used to seeing our renders done the next day! Pretty convenient for a small VFX studio on tight timelines. Vray/Renderman still take a bloody eternity, however the quality is better.
I hope they get paid very good. Their art work is the reason a lot of people are the way they are now because of all the childhood movies that inspired us while growing up.
I must admit that I thought CGI was less labour intensive than old school 2D imaging, that’s why, after watching a heap of Dust shorts, I went looking for videos like this so I could truly understand the amount of work & talent involved. I appreciate the final results & am now gobsmacked at the results that are achieved with small budgets, when every frame is done by hand & there are 24fps. 😳 Awesome work by these creators!
One of the guys I went to school with (in Australia), Pieter Lommerse, was always drawing really good comics at school. And he’s spent over 20 years now working as a Director of Creative Affairs in the Animation Industry for Disney. Goes to show that all that “time wasting” at school (teachers’ words) can turn into a great career.
This is perfect for me! I actually wanna be an animator for dream works or universal ;) I am really used to 2D animation and I am soon going onto blender ( even though I already have it.) i suggest for people starting out on 3D animation use blender cause it's free and you can see if you like 3D animation.
Shane Marshall maybe that is true but 2d is still quicker and cheaper you don't need to spend 4 years on a 2d cartoon and no mater how cheap you make it and nomater how many corners you cut it still looks good
Generally it is not. If you google budgets of different movies you'll see that high-quality 2D animation is still cheaper than high-quality 3D animation. (i.e. Mulan cost 70 million, whereas Tangled cost 260 million.) People just stopped consuming 2D animation as much and wanted only to watch 3D animation, so it became unsustainable to keep making 2D animation. Maybe there will be a 2D animation revival someday though!
Why are people criticizing movies anyway? Movies are made to entertain you. Now it’s just “that movie is trash, don’t watch it” and “OMG THAT MOVIE IS SO GOOD WATCH IT!” That is NOT the case. If you enjoy the movie, that’s all that counts. Don’t listen to “THAT MOVIE IS HORRIBLE”. That is that PERSON’S OPINION. ***** that's not true, if this person works and practices hard enough there's a chance they could make it into a big company like Disney or DreamWorks animation
L Lawliet -Rhyuzaki- You know there's been movies that have failed in the box office before and it's always happened. Sure he may become an animator and everything but he should worry more about how good a movie will turn out. Everyone nowadays are just criticizing films but that's usually before they even get a chance to see it like Ghostbusters 2016. Plus there are new animated films coming out this year that I think are going to be shit like "The Boss Baby" and "The Emoji Movie." Even though I haven't watched those films yet I have the right to criticize them as the purpose of the movie trailers is to give us an idea if the movie will be any good or not before we see them. Unless this person can handle all the hatred he'll get from his own movie regardless how good the animation is, I'd suggest he gets a different hobby to make a living out of.
As someone in the industry... "a lot of work" is a huge understatement! The scope of a 2 hour movie like Madagascar is ENORMOUS... 10's of thousands of man-hours combined.. if not more. But if you love what you do then it's fun ;)
Hey I know it’s been five years and afterrrr that I’m here but I’m a young girl aspiring to pursue my career in animation can you tell me how it’s like to be a animatior ?
@@voidinwonderland hey, it's a very awesome and creative job, from creating 3D models, texturing and giving them colors to basically animate them into a composition using lights and place them into an environment, telling a story and seeing your creation rendered is a very satisying feeling. You have to really like it and being extremely passionate about it, it's the sort of thing " chose what you like to do and you won't have to work again"! Good luck!

I want to animate my own web series too. Too bad I *suck* at animation. Making a series is way too expensive so the only way I could do it is if I do it myself since there is literally no animator on this planet who would work for free. You and I are in the same boat pal, only you started before me
animation is a lot like doing your favorite activities, its not for the money, its for self fulfillment. Its not for the fame, its self satisfaction. its not without purpose, its for the hell of it.
+Bounce Animation Pixar sells their older versions of it to make money off the competition & juice creativity in the industry. It's kind of a win all around. Competition makes a film & they make money, competition does something they haven't they learn from it, & since they make it they'll always be a step ahead with whatever they're doing in house.
Thanks for posting this video i love some of dreamworks films and i have been asking myself how they are made very useful for me.But where does voice acting comes in ? i am glad they use Maya cause i am learning how to use it to do animation
+Yuuva Custom grip, either for comfort or a different feel. I used to use rubber bands or foam to fatten up my Wacom stylus to that of a large Sharpie when I'd switch out to the felt marker tip.
its been like a year since i've been learning animation and i really thought that one day i can make an animated movie of my own, but now things look way more complicated
It might look complicated, but there are millions of people out there doing it. Best thing to do is find like-minded people to work on it with you. And they’re definitely out there wishing exactly the same as you! Just look at how many movies & shorts there are on a channel like Dust. Good luck 🤞

The editor himself makes the first voice over, adds some music to make a good judgement. This is sooo great so professional. I didn’t know that.
Which software ??
This makes it hard to believe that CG is this much cheaper than Hand drawn Animation
well it depends if you are doing cheap hand drawn animation with art that isn't fancy its cheaper
also CGI is harder any body can draw on paper but you have to be a math genius to make cgi
you do not need to be a math genius to make cgi, it takes a specific set of skills like any job

Love feel good animation!!!!! It's a beautiful distraction from reality at times..
"Tougher than making a SOUP SANDWICH!"
Well I'll be using that...
This was so much better than watching the actual movie. Loved it. Smile and wave boys.
wish I could work at DreamWorks in the future...-_-
scrat mavis shake and one day you might be delusional enough to believe you are
yes iam
Me too
Very interesting! I knew they draw storyboards, but I didn't know they actually turn them into animated draft blueprints.
"not all our stories are completely original"
remembers Antz
This is my favorite video on RUclips.💯💯💯
Are you telling me....
That a *penguin..* taught me more about animation then my *professional* university?
The best 15 minutes In my Life ❤️
"Someone slim down my wireframe!"
😁😁😁
Brian Jefcoat is a great guy. Super talented and one of the funniest people you’ll ever meet. Been a long time Bri!
What renderer are they using?
+Song Moralde they use 3delight.com its rendeman
Thank you! :)
+CGMeetup THOSE COPYCATS, RENDERMAN IS PIXAR'S SOFTWARE
+Bounce Animation Pixar sells their older versions of it to make money off the competition & juice creativity in the industry. It's kind of a win all around. Competition makes a film & they make money, competition does something they haven't they learn from it, & since they make it they'll always be a step ahead with whatever they're doing in house.
+Jack Curran Lol this nigga's so mad.
It seems like such a headache but the end result makes it all worth it.
Nice instructional video, thanks for sharing
I love animation movies and I assumed such wonderful input. Great minds & artists.
which is the animation software used at 9:12?
+danyro90 i think it's inhouse software
+danyro90 That's Autodesk Maya and many more other software like Zbrush, Houdni and there in house software.

Imagine having one of these guys as your parents... amazing
I kind of think the Voice Actors feel a bit left out. :P
True
they always get the spotlight, glad everyone is getting attention
+jmalmsten They made a silent film hahaha.
Talk shows: We show actors!
Also talk shows: Allow an Executive and/or Actor to represent an entire movie.
This is really interesting I want to make a movie when I grow up. Though this probably can't be cheap
8:40 My Dream Job !
Great! I'm generally the first time I see what is real rigging and how the whole team does it!
Who watched just for HTTYD lol
meeee lol. clicked because of the thumbnail
Meeeeeeee lmao
i'm 23 And still watching animation ! i'm greatfull and thankfull
Thanks for posting this video i love some of dreamworks films and i have been asking myself how they are made very useful for me.But where does voice acting comes in ?
i am glad they use Maya cause i am learning how to use it to do animation
I think it's somewhere before animation. Also I'm learning maya too.
Voice acting can be done after parts of the script are finalized. It does not have a super strict deadline.
Very fun and informative way to break down the 3D Computer Animation Process! :)
my Hiccup from how to train your dragon is sexy of the bits
Wow! It's really great job! I am impressed.
2:39 what the hell is around his stylus o,o
+Yuuva i guess it is for a more comfy grip
+Yuuva Custom grip, either for comfort or a different feel. I used to use rubber bands or foam to fatten up my Wacom stylus to that of a large Sharpie when I'd switch out to the felt marker tip.
+Yuuva I don't know what the other reply's are talking about. It's used so that your fingers don't stick to your screen/tablet.
They're talking about the stylus, not the drawing glove
it's a grip
Wow thanks CGMeetup loved the video and thank you for breaking it down step by step!
You forgot the most important part
When I come and watch the movie for free
The least I can say thank you
All Steps are perfectly packed!!!👏👏
its been like a year since i've been learning animation and i really thought that one day i can make an animated movie of my own, but now things look way more complicated
It might look complicated, but there are millions of people out there doing it. Best thing to do is find like-minded people to work on it with you. And they’re definitely out there wishing exactly the same as you! Just look at how many movies & shorts there are on a channel like Dust. Good luck 🤞
@@allisonjames2923 yea u r right...I'll need to work much harder to be someone like them for sure 💪
This is just fun. Well done !
