Just bought a HX99. My real complaint is that the help file isn't easy to digest. And there's a lot to learn. Your videos about the camera have been a huge help.
Thankyou so much. I have owned my HX99 a couple of years and totally underappreciated it. You have made me want to go and take photos with it and leave my iPhone in my pocket.
I have owned the RX100 for years so my expectations for the HX99 were quite low but I am totally amazed how much functionality has been packed into this awesome little camera. This has become my always with camera now. Great beginner tutorial I look forward to the in-depth review. Thanks for igniting my excitement in this wonderful piece of technology.
Wow, thanks for this video. I am going to get this camera for my wife who would rather have mega zoom than sharpness or megapixels. The menu system looks identical to what I have on my A7riii. So, I will be able to help her with most of the features, but I will have her watch your video when gets it for our wedding anniversary.
Really good walk through, much appreciated! Few people know their camera that well. It seems like this camera is still competitive a few years later when I look into small super zoom cameras. Thank you.
I had this camera a while back as a present and never used it. You have given a very comprehensive and detailed explanation of all the functions and icons which is what I needed. Thank you so much. Can’t wait to start using it now.
This video was a life saver! I am sure I will watch it again, but this little camera really is rather amazing. Any hints for taking pictures at concerts? Many thanks for the information.
Awesome, I made this video for people like yourself ;) It's overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it it's not so bad... Thank you for the comments!!
I’ve just unpacked mine and find this video very helpful. The features on this camera are incredible and though I’m an experienced photographer it’s going to be fun learning it all - it has several features I’ve never even used before.I love the customisation of the buttons etc. - I’ve already decided on several settings just listening to you here.👍
I have an HX90v and love it. As soon as I can I will upgrade to a hx99 for the 4K and touch-screen focusing. I use it a lot and mix the video with stuff shot on my APS-C sensor cameras. In RUclips content, you really can't tell the difference. Its really a great travel camera for stills. I started with a hx9v, which I still have and use. This camera series from Sony is a bargain.
Great Review, it explains things a little simpler. I've got one of these camera's coming in the next few days. I bought this camera, for when I don't want to hump too much about. The menu is very similar to my RX10 M3 camera, which is good news...🙂👍🏻

I made a fix to be able to use this camera with HDMI on a tripod. You need a Aluminium camera cage for the RX100 M6 from Fugasun on Amazon. Grind a 1mm wide metal lip by the grip down with a dremel or a router, the handle on the hx99 is further to the left and also is deeper. Get the Smallrig Micro HDMI to HDMI adapter with screws to fasten to the frame. I also bought a dummy battery for constant power from an Anker Power bank.
Thnx for the video. Well into it I realized i have the HX90V, the 99 has a few more sophisticated features but I still learned a lot about my 90V. I subscribed looking forward to learning more about my camera as well as others as I evolve into higher quality equipment.
5 years after this video and I just bought a hx99…love small cameras! It was very tough to find…I was looking for this or the Pan tz80 (perhaps my first choice, but this is so close and uses same battery as the Rx1007 I have). Either was almost impossible to find…got the hx99 at a small store that just received a few. Largely sold out everywhere. Arrives today and then I will work through this video. Thanks for this! Looking forward to using the hx99 on some sunny hikes!
Thank you for taking the time to put this together. This is my second HX and I thought I’d got a good grasp of things.... Not the case, I learned loads! Thank you!
Great review, Jay! The feature set for this camera is crazy. I mean, really amazing. The only thing that lets this camera down is the physical limitations of it's small sensor. Otherwise, a very capable camera. The button customization and My Menu options alone, are unheard of in this class of camera.
Thanks Kevin ;) I totally agree the power is really amazing considering the price range. It's basically and RX100 series camera with a smaller sensor and mega zoom. The IQ in good light is really excellent! Low, light and depth of field play is where the RX100 series makes the huge difference.
Is there a video for a real amateur? Even though this says "beginners" guide, there are lots of terms and functions on the camera that I do not understand. I recently upgraded from Sony DSC-HX20V and thought I understood the basics and some more technical aspects, but this video has me overwhelmed with info. Any other videos you can recommend?
Great overview and clear explanations. I am just too old to carry around a lot of equipment and it seems this camera is going to shoot zoom photos well for me and maybe I will finally capture the wonderful chipmunks we have here. Thank you.
Thank you for the detailed information!! First time camera purchase in years, would of been lost without this. Looking forward to the "Pro-tips" video.
Thank u very much for that quick but very nice guide. Im apriciare it a lot because im new to somy cameras. I have a question about the 4K Movie recording. How long does the camera recors im 4k when temperatire is set to high? Can you test that? Would be great. Thanks a lot

@@Jason_Hermann Thank you so much for the quick response. I could not believe it. Something else to watch out for with Sony. Best regards
How good are the built-in stereo mics on this camera? Previous Sony compact zoom cameras were considered really good for shooting concert video. Venues won't allow you to bring in anything bigger than that and because it has a good zoom it's better than shooting concert video than standard cell phones. I just wish they'd have better features for audio like the LG V series cell phones.
From the limited testing I have done so far, the stereo mic audio does not sound that good to me. I really need to do more testing though. Please stay tuned for the full review where I will answer that question in more detail.
Hi great walkthrough learned new things that hx90 can do. , can you also add to your review for all the new features compared to the hx90v, Eye Detect, Burstsshot upto 150, Touch Pad Af, Touch Focus, 4k video, Zoom Assist,? And some new features i missed. And do you think if i upgrade to hx99 is worth it from hx90v. Thank you.
Hi, great video, but I'm really lost on the control lens ring. Really don't understand when to use. Is it additional or alternative to the zoom rocker..? Thanks again
Hi Jay, thanks for this. Just wondering what else does the HDMI do? For that matter does the MULTI port have any use other than to charge it? Love the camera HX90 but wished I'd held out for something with a larger chip and a mic input - such is life.
The HDMI is for sharing the video footage to a monitor like a TV or something so you can share your photos and videos with friends easily. You can also use the HDMI for an external recorder if you want. The USB port is used to charge, but also used to transfer images on and off the camera. You can also plug certain accessories in the USB like remotes and stuff for example.
Hi, I just bought this camera on the back of your reviews and find it amazing so far. One question thought, do you know if it's possible to assign the "High Contrast Mono" setting to the "MR1" position on the Mode dial ? If so, how do you it ? Many thanks !
I don't have the camera in hand anymore as this review was done a very long time ago. However, if you set the camera up how you want it and then go into the menu you can save those settings to the MR1 position. I'm not sure if it will work though without trying it. After looking in the manual, I don't think you can save that particular setting to MR1: helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1820/v1/en/contents/TP0001826985.html?search=memory
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for the advice, but that doesn't work because when you set the camera up for "High Contrast Mono", you cannot get to the menu without exiting the BW setting (ie. when you press menu it exits the BW setting). But thanks anyway.
Thanks, and you would need to have the subject a distance away from the camera and the foreground subjects right in front of the camera. For example, shooting thru flowers so they are very close to the camera and your subject about 10 feet away or so. You can also get the camera very low to the ground, so the foreground is physically close to the actual camera. I hope that helps!
It's a pity that those little compact cameras seem to be dying out. All camera manufacturers haven't released a new travel zoom camera with this sensor and a 30-40x zoom lens! *too sad* In a few years we will be forced to buy those more expensive 1" sensor cameras. Thanks a lot for this beginner's guide! (I used an older Panasonic travel camera and now used a pretty good offer to buy this instead of the Panasonic TZ-95 - in Europe called TZ-96! *names* )
Hi, and no it is not very good in low light honestly. You would be better off looking for an RX100 series camera which has a larger 1" sensor for better low light quality in my opinion. Something like this for example: amzn.to/3wKYrtC
there isn't better compact super zoom than this camera. I have it. It's amazing for zoom shoots, zoom videos. RX 100 series isn't much better from just using your best smartphone. I had it. Sold it
Hello! Can this camera shoot 4k video 25/30 fps non stop for several hours and charge from powerbank? Or does it turn off due to overheating? I choose a compact camera with a large focal length for shooting concerts.
Hi Jay I notice some vidoes on RUclips shot at normal speed at the start, but then seem to switch to slow motion without a break in the shooting to make a change in the menu. Is it possible to do that with the HX99?
Also, I primarily use my camera to take videos at rock concerts. So the lights and movement of the artist are quite challenging, however, my old Sony took amazing videos. Any tips for setting up this camera for videos primarily taken in a dark venue with flashing lights?
I’m considering getting this camera, and the only thing I can’t figure out is if it has space (holes) for a neck strap, and not just for the wrist strap that follows in the package? Does it have a hole for straps on the left side, or just the right side?
Jay, many thanks for the great video. I tried to set the Movie to XAVC S 4K to 30P 100M or 30P 60M but in my choices I can only see 25P 60M and 25P 100M. Any idea why my choices is limited to only 25P not 30P as you shown in your video?
Hello there, you would need to change your camera to NTSC as opposed to PAL which is what your camera is set to. Se here: MENU → (Setup) → [NTSC/PAL Selector] → [Enter]
For image quality I would totally go with the RX100. The older larger sensor is still better for that. For super zoom range, the HX99 has it beat by far. Keep in mind the original RX100 has no viewfinder, the lcd screen is fixed and does not move, No wifi/ nfc, in addition to other features like the my menu area and so on.
Agree with replies. I own the original RX100 and the HX80 (predecessor - along with the HX90 - to the HX99) and often carry both (same battery is handy). The RX100 wins in photo quality, especially low light, but the HX99 wins in nearly all other areas. I love the AMAZING zoom range, the flippy screen, and WiFi of my HX80. I will likely sell my HX80 and buy this to get RAW shooting, 4K video, and a touch screen - all useful upgrades.
On this particular camera compared to the latest iPhone or Galaxy I would say no. But, you do get the incredible optical zoom lens and other camera specific features if you needed them. At the end of the day, the huge lens range is what makes this camera better than a modern cell phone.
@@Jason_Hermann it's much better than any smartphone, the lens is far superior to smartphones so everything looks more realistic and not like it's captured on a tiny smartphone lens but on an actual camera. Sensor size isn't everything. I have the previous version and the images look very different to new smartphones.
How long will it record video for? I know the RX100M6 only records 5 minutes at a time, so i'm hoping this is more like the HX90V and records 29 minutes? My HX90V suffered a fatal injury this week and i'm looking at buying the HX99.
Hello, the Sony HX99V can record for 29min, but only in 1080p and not in 4k quality. 4k Quality is limited to 5min clips just like the RX100M6. The RX100M can also record for 29min in 1080p mode by the way ;) I hope that helps and have a good day!
Not as your recording, but you can get a photo out of the video footage, by watching it in playback mode and pausing it at the frame you want then hit the photo capture button. See here: helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1820/v1/en/contents/TP0001859212.html?search=photo%20capture
MENU → (Camera Settings2) → [Audio signals] → desired setting. Menu item details On:all: Sounds are produced for example when the focus is achieved by pressing the shutter button halfway down. On:Shutter Only: Only the shutter sound is produced. Off: Sounds are not produced.
Is there a way to tune in the iso settings more. I don’t like how it jumps from 100,200,400,800 . I would like to be able to select 100,200,300,400,500,600,700
Don't think I can provide a photo here. But thought I'd mention that I used a short piece of threaded rod and a coupler to make a tripod extension. The threaded rod is narrow and allows the HDMI to be plugged in while on a tripod.
IO would recommend having the lens at it's widest so the aperture is at it's maximum as well (Lowest Number) That will yield you the lowest ISO level which should give you the cleanest footage..
Notice that you are registering with the barcode each time you're connecting with app? After registering for the first time that should be all that is needed the app will connect to the camera as soon as you press the app without the need for taking a photo of the barcode!it does with my xzpremium and rx101V anyway. The complaints i have with the app it doesn't transfer raw files or 4k videos?
Make sure the camera is the same temp as the environment. Sometimes if you goo from AC to outside the camera will fog up due to condensation. You just need to wait for it to equalize if that is the case.

@@Jason_Hermann thanks. Sony, Panasonic or someone needs to attack the audio ability of these cameras in an effort to appeal to concert goers.
Thank you.
No, I don't think it's worth upgrading from the HX90. perhaps the next generation version will offer more to justify...
It is not worth the upgrade.
Hi, great video, but I'm really lost on the control lens ring. Really don't understand when to use. Is it additional or alternative to the zoom rocker..? Thanks again
Great video 📸😊
Thank you 😁
Hi Jay, thanks for this.
Yeah, but if you exit the BW setting the camera is still set as BW no?
@@Jason_Hermann Unfortunately not, it goes back to IA mode in colour :(
Excellent video on this superb camera, just need to buy one now :-)
Great Tutorial! If it's not too much trouble how can I create a shot where my subject is clear yet the foreground is beautifully out of focus?
Thanks, and you would need to have the subject a distance away from the camera and the foreground subjects right in front of the camera. For example, shooting thru flowers so they are very close to the camera and your subject about 10 feet away or so. You can also get the camera very low to the ground, so the foreground is physically close to the actual camera. I hope that helps!
If anyone is wondering, you change the default setting that turns the camera on/off automatically with activation of the viewfinder.
Thank u, its very informative..im lazy to read manual ;(
Thanks. Can you use a powerbank to charge it while in use?
Thank You
It's a pity that those little compact cameras seem to be dying out. All camera manufacturers haven't released a new travel zoom camera with this sensor and a 30-40x zoom lens! *too sad*
In a few years we will be forced to buy those more expensive 1" sensor cameras.
Thanks a lot for this beginner's guide! (I used an older Panasonic travel camera and now used a pretty good offer to buy this instead of the Panasonic TZ-95 - in Europe called TZ-96! *names* )
Thanks for this!
Hey Jay, is the sony hx99 still worth it in 2021? I want something to capture some events at night. Is it good in low light situations?
Hi, and no it is not very good in low light honestly. You would be better off looking for an RX100 series camera which has a larger 1" sensor for better low light quality in my opinion. Something like this for example: amzn.to/3wKYrtC
there isn't better compact super zoom than this camera. I have it. It's amazing for zoom shoots, zoom videos. RX 100 series isn't much better from just using your best smartphone. I had it. Sold it
I wish i had that camera
Hello! Can this camera shoot 4k video 25/30 fps non stop for several hours and charge from powerbank? Or does it turn off due to overheating? I choose a compact camera with a large focal length for shooting concerts.
Hi excelente video...I put A and the picture is overlight what I do?
Hi Jay I notice some vidoes on RUclips shot at normal speed at the start, but then seem to switch to slow motion without a break in the shooting to make a change in the menu. Is it possible to do that with the HX99?
Also, I primarily use my camera to take videos at rock concerts. So the lights and movement of the artist are quite challenging, however, my old Sony took amazing videos. Any tips for setting up this camera for videos primarily taken in a dark venue with flashing lights?
thank you what is the best type sd card for best pictures?
If I have a limited budget. Can I use that Sony camera HX99 to make VLOG on youtube? i have rode mic already. and DJ stabilizator
Yes, you could certainly use the HX99 for that, but it has no mic input just so you are aware...
I’m considering getting this camera, and the only thing I can’t figure out is if it has space (holes) for a neck strap, and not just for the wrist strap that follows in the package?
Does it have a hole for straps on the left side, or just the right side?
It only has the wrist strap attachment point on the right side Kristine...
You can buy a fitted case and hang it around the neck that way.
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks Jay, appreciate it..
Hi, Can we shoot time lapse video on this camera ?
Excellent 👍
Is the viewfinder ok if you wear spectacles?
Yes I’ve just bought one and can confirm it has enough eye relief.
Thanks mate 👍
Thanks a lot.
Hi, when I lift the viewfinder up it turns black, can you help me fix this? I can’t seem to find any tips to help me with this problem online.
Thank you for sharing. Could we have silent mode?
So if you had to chose would you go with a RX100 (OG version mark 1) or the HX99? They seem to be the same price range.
Is the image quality superior to what you would get with an iPhone ?
Jay SonyAlphaLab oh wow, thank you, that is very helpful! :D
man thaks for the review
what settings do you recommend for concerts' photos?
👍 awesome thank you 😎
You are very welcome and thank you for the nice comments :)
Anybody knows what’s the best settings for youtube video on this camera? I try the auto and when I upload it from iMovie it looks pale😞.
You could use the tripod and HDMI port at the same time if you buy a thread extender.
Excellent point and thank you for sharing that!! Really good idea ;)
goot
can you take pictures while you are recording a video?
Not as your recording, but you can get a photo out of the video footage, by watching it in playback mode and pausing it at the frame you want then hit the photo capture button. See here: helpguide.sony.net/dsc/1820/v1/en/contents/TP0001859212.html?search=photo%20capture
I need to know how to transfer the photos from the camera to my computer...........
Should I buy the Sony HX99 or Canon T7?
They are such drastically different cameras it's really hard to say what you would enjoy more honestly.
How do I shut off the insanely annoying shutter beep? I shoot at concerts; it would be rude to be bothering everyone around me with the beeps. Help ….
Nevermind. Found it.
MENU → (Camera Settings2) → [Audio signals] → desired setting.

Sounds are produced for example when the focus is achieved by pressing the shutter button halfway down.
On:Shutter Only:
Only the shutter sound is produced.

Is there any way to make DSC-HX99 digital camera into webcam too? thank you.
Did anyone answer this for you?
Hallo mr.jay, can you teach me, how to connect usb mtp? Cause on my camera is not available.
Is there a way to tune in the iso settings more. I don’t like how it jumps from 100,200,400,800 . I would like to be able to select 100,200,300,400,500,600,700
With this camera, no there does not appear to be an option to change that.
Do you know how can we do time-lapse using this camera?
Does it have sound photos? (A mode where when the photo is captured, 5 or 10 seconds of audio are also captured)
Not that I know of...
Don't think I can provide a photo here. But thought I'd mention that I used a short piece of threaded rod and a coupler to make a tripod extension. The threaded rod is narrow and allows the HDMI to be plugged in while on a tripod.
Nice work!
what setting should I use in vlogging low light situations?
IO would recommend having the lens at it's widest so the aperture is at it's maximum as well (Lowest Number) That will yield you the lowest ISO level which should give you the cleanest footage..
Did Sony HX99 Have Slowmo at 1080?
Notice that you are registering with the barcode each time you're connecting with app? After registering for the first time that should be all that is needed the app will connect to the camera as soon as you press the app without the need for taking a photo of the barcode!it does with my xzpremium and rx101V anyway. The complaints i have with the app it doesn't transfer raw files or 4k videos?
hello! i have questions for my hx99
it has moist inside the lens what should i do?
Make sure the camera is the same temp as the environment. Sometimes if you goo from AC to outside the camera will fog up due to condensation. You just need to wait for it to equalize if that is the case.
is there a way to change the inverted photo when taking selfie’s
