LYRICS:
I Am The Night
A curtain call
The wings are waiting for the night to fall
Spread over the stage
Can’t keep me out
I’ve always pummeled through the doors of doubt
Power through the plagues
Wit for pace
This riddle’s just a race
Old self pities
Cleanse this city’s waste
I am the night
A tyrant of the shade
I am the spite
I am the pain repaid
I am the night
A fear that lies in shadows cannot fade
Crush the light
I am the night
Listening
The ripple of a heartbeat quickening
Fear behind the eyes
Uneasy prey
The broken bones litter the alleyways
Terror from the skies
Check my head
I guess the joke’s on me
I’m not laughing
At the irony
I am the night
A tyrant of the shade
I am the spite
I am the pain repaid
I am the night
A fear that lies in shadows cannot fade
Crush the light
I am the night
The chill
Of the shadow that lurks inside this mind
It builds
Breathe the fear out and face it one last time
I am the night
A tyrant of the shade
I am the spite
I am the pain repaid
I am the night
A fear that lies in shadows cannot fade
Crush the light
I am the night
And now the joke is on me...

Rest in peace, Kevin Conroy. You will be deeply missed.
I have to admit, "I am the night, tyrant of the shade/I am the spite, I am the pain repaid" is honestly one of the best summaries of Batman's entire character I've ever seen, easily up there with the famous "I'm the vengeance, I am the night!".
"I am NOT a failure! ...I am vengeance! I am the night! I AM BATMAN!" was one of the DCAU's best moments period. (Up there for me with Batman talking down Ace, and Terry finally getting the Batman theme song.)
Don’t say Bruce lines
joiless If only that famous line had of been delivered better, but Kevin Conroy definitely wasn’t as good of a voice actor as he is now back then....
I honestly really don’t understand the “A tyrant of the shade” lyric
Prometheus 306 Eh, I guess, it just doesn’t really feel right for Batman.
"Riddle's just a race" SHOTS FIRED
At his parents XD
jackson ohhh... funny but painful lol
"I am the SPITE"
*shows Batmobile*
_He_ was the night.
_He_ was vengeance.
*_He_* was Batman.
Rest easy, Kevin. We are forever grateful.
Yes rest in peace to kevin conroy
now the Joker is sad without his nemesis his ying ;(
Was? No always will be
The Knight's gone Dark. We're in sore need of the Next Knight.
@@piotrzandecki953 .... "ying"? Let me guess- crapskin, right?
I just realized how fitting calling Batman a tyrant of the shade is. Not only is he a cruel ruler of the shade, but in ancient Greece a tyrant was someone who seized power without having a right to it. In the same way the shade doesn't rightfully belong to Batman, but he took it, and he rules it with an iron fist. Well played Gav. Well played.
He merely adopted the dark.
@@principetnomusicjust so you know, I read your reply as bane from the dark knight rises
And yet he makes those stalk in the shade piss themselves
Also, a tyrant was used regardless of how benevolently or malevolently they ruled...
in the days of ancient greece, Tyrant referred to just the name of the ruler of the city, no negative connotations.
I love how these songs have throwbacks to older songs but the old lyrics have new important meanings. The "Check my head, I guess the joke's on me" line means SO much to this game, it's almost as if Gav knew the plot of this game when he wrote Mind of the Bat. Now THAT is good writing.
Maggsy97 It's quite cool how that line ended up having a different meaning for this one, I'm glad it worked out that way ;)
There are certain areas where the song sounds similar to the point in Rise when he imitates Bane as well.
@@miracleofsound thank you for making this song, it's fantastic.
RIP Kevin Conroy
We'll miss you.
I can't believe this, we lost Batman, our hero. From the series to the video games I have nothing but respect for Kevin Conroy.
_"Old self pities cleanse this city's waste"_ and _"I am the pain repaid"_ are such incredible lines. This gave me chills, it's absolutely stunning!
Rest, Kevin Conroy. You may be gone, but you are the night. To me, you will always be Batman.
I love how jokers song sound more villainess and upbeat, showing his true character, while batman's song is more heroic and somber, showing how he is a hero, but only does it cause his parents died.

"This riddles just a race."
- all people who played the disappointment that was the riddler side missions.
That race was fucking hard it felt great when it was finally over
I am vengeance.
I am the night.
I am Batman!
nordic fatcheese *I am the goddamn Batman!
I AM! THE MOTHERFUCKING! GODDAMN! BUTT TOUCHING! BATMAN.......... YAAHHH!!!!!
nordic fatcheese Now, that's the Batman I have the most fondness for.
nordic fatcheese I knew it! Batman was Pikachu the whole time!
Funinightmare It's spelled Phijkchu.
The next batman movie needs to have this in the credits. Seriously, how does the media NOT try to use your music?!
SharkTurd11 Because no one wants that kind of hassle.
Bloodlyshiva 'hassle'
Because they think that youtubers are just some kids without talent.
Blitzboy98 !00% true. Althought, Zenimax Online DID hire Malukah in there Elder Scrolls Online game to sing a bard song and the end credits song.
I also forgot that the wasteland 2 credits were done by Gav as well so some are sensible but not all.
Seriously, that timing of "I AM THE NIGHT!" with Batman launching out of the Batmobile is just *amazing.*
That is extremely good timing
Is the time of the that 0:55
Rest in peace Kevin Conroy, you are the night
"this riddles just a race" Lmao
roflshield cheeky lil jab
roflshield How's that?
NinetyNineNo All of Riddler's 'main' riddles in the storyline are Batmobile based puzzles and races, inter-spaced with co-op sequences between Batman and Catwoman
Zetsumi Ravencroft 12 days, my new record for how long it took someone to explain, thus ruin the joke. :D
roflshield Whoops, sorry
"Wit for pace
"This riddle's just a race"
...subtle critique of game design decisions or just cool lyrics? You decide
Both? Both. Both is good.
Yes
Where is a question for you what was the riddlers crime in the first game?
Thats the true riddle
@@petercoulam1101 In the first game he placed trophies all over the Asylum. Yes, not a crime but in the video tapes it is mentioned that the Riddler often put people in testing chambers which they usually didn't survive in because according to him "They would have survived if they weren't so stupid"
Looks like I'm the first to revisit this video in the wake of Kevin Conroy's passing.
R.I.P Legend. 🦇💔🌕
"Check my head I guess the joke's one me, I'm not laughing at the irony" killed me. I love when you do stuff like that from previous songs, like in the DAI one.
***** Makes that line almost seem prophetic^^
***** also the music from "RISE" in between, awesomeness
***** Nope, the words "check my head..." are from Mind of the Bat, but in between some of the lyrics there is the tune from Rise.
darkabysskiller 2:17 - Rise.
MrMasterLay Wat? I know that.
Batman: The Pain Repaid would be an awesome movie... Seriously awesome song. You have really outdone yourself here.
I'd see that. Probably be better than Batman V Superman.
I'd go so far as to say that every other Batman movie in existence is better than Batman v Superman. The campy ones are at least funny.
You know you messed up when you made people remember Batman and Robin fondly.
rideroffamine Pretty much.
It'd also be a badass title for a comic book story arc. Something involving Batman's past, maybe.
RIP Kevin conroy 🦇
Rest in peace Kevin
Now the joke is on me,
I bought this on PC...
TheSuperQuail That rhyming is intense
***** Same.
***** Mind giving your PC deets? I want to try this game so bad, so if I know what setup it works fine on I might give it a go.
***** Actually the main thing he needs to know is if you have an SSD. The game has a problem with mechanical drives.
MoffKalast Ah, thanks. Well I have an SSD but it's only a small one for my OS, so looks like I won't be buying. Cheers for avoiding a massive pain in the arse for me. :)
"I am the spite. I am the pain _repaid._ "
Holy shit that gives me chills, that's the best description of Batman ever. I've listened to this 20 times in the last week, I love it
Anyone here after hearing Kevin Conroy died
RIP you legend
He will forever be Batman RIP to the Legend.
R.I.P. Kevin Conroy, you were the Night 🦇 🖤
No one does choruses better than Gav. Awesome song!
Ludvig Holm Thank you. Writing choruses is the hardest part of songwriting for me. It's very difficult to balance the fine line between memorable/catchy and cheezey/throwaway
miracleofsound Given the rate at which these are released, I can barely imagine the deluge of music you'd put out if you ever threw quality control (with all the delay it creates) away. My head would probably explode if such a thing happened, and I take comfort from the fact that it won't. You're arguably my favorite person on the internet, and certainly my favorite musician.
miracleofsound Now, I've always found the choruses the easiest part of the song, and the narrative hard. Which is strange, since I can write stories no problem. Just needing to form the narrative in rhyme is hard for me, I guess.
In a perfect world, this would become a Batman show theme song.
R.I.P Kevin Conroy. 🦇🤵⚰
Listening to this after Kevin Conroy departed...., i have mixed feelings. R.I.P good sir and thank you
Amazing Song, and i think the fact that it Blurs the line between Hero and Villian is Precisely where Batman Dwells, this makes it Utterly perfect for Him!
I think... This is the best Batman-song you've ever made!
The orchestra, the clips, the feeling of the night. I love it!
rest in peace kevin conroy....
This would make an awesome TV show intro
Lyrical reference to Mind of the Bat and a musical interlude from RISE. Such a beautiful weave of music.
BEST. SONG. EVER!!! The instrumental is totally gonna be my ringtone!!
Just pure awesome, Gav you've outdone every Batman song you've done before! Also I can help but notice that the tune or melody of this song sounds very similar to Rise's. I can't help but think that's intentional.
Funky Student It's absolutely intentional, just like the Batman movie & game soundtracks sound similar to eachother :)
miracleofsound Once again, you capture the essence of the original work perfectly. I absolutely can't wait to see what else you have in store!
Funky Student Miracle of Sound does that - hides themes from previous songs for the same series. It's really quite nice - gives a feel of continuity.
You see it in the Assassin's Creed songs, you see it in the Bioshock songs, you see it in the Witcher songs and so on.
There are also a couple references to Mind of the Bat
Funky Student yea and at 2:20 he uses the theme to mind of the bat
2:35 I just noticed that 'The chill' is a reference to the guy who killed Batman's parents. Damn this song is great
The Arkham games have been a tribute to the history of the Batman, giving nods to little things that make the character able to cross generations. Like the Gray Ghost posters in the Clock-tower, & the faithful adaptation of some of the most important elements of the batman mythos, like Killing The Joke.
This is a tribute to a tribute & a great one at that, way to raise the bar Gav!
I love the references to Rise and Mind of the Bat slipped in!
MisterMortarious What's the Rise reference?
There are parts that sound like parts of Rise. Listen to Rise again then listen to this one really closely.
MasterHumus Although they *do* fit in because the Rise melody was the opening melody to Mind of the Bat anyway, which is from the same universe :P
Rest in Peace Kevin Conroy.
This guy has a great voice I feel like he needs more credit.
This is awesome. After finishing the story to Arkham Knight, there was nothing else I wanted you to write a song about more, and you have done it better than I could have ever hoped for. When I saw the title, I loved it, and had in my mind what the chorus would be like for one of the most iconic Batman lines of all time, and Gav, you captured it perfectly.
I love the subtle bits like your jab at the riddle races which also calls to mind the feeling of rushed anxiety as Batman faces the task of completing all these tasks in one night. I love the little bits referring to the most prevalent part of the story (and twist). They are noticeable if you know the story, but, because this song is what Batman shows to the world, it's not overt, just like how he's trying to contain it so no one else has to know in the game.
This is sheer awesomeness Gav- the wait for Level 6 is going to be a tough one :)
I would really like to see a song commemorating Ivy's sacrifice in this game. Her death really hit me hard, especially when I realized it was the only one that was REAL.
Got curious about this song and clicked on the thumbnail... And then my head exploded from the sheer awesomeness.
This song doing the job!
Like Miracle of Sound’s other Batman-related songs, I can really see this being in a Batman musical or something.
I can see some of the references to past songs about the arkham games. Even at one part the beat so similar to the mind of the bat. Clever songs have clever writers.
Looking back at the song the beat seems to be referencing Rise more with beat at times more the The Mind Of The Bat. My mistake. Still clever song.
Game Slinger It's referencing both, so you were right twice :D
miracleofsound Still nice touch on this song. The vocals were great on this. Keep up the great work you glorious bastard.
Yes , I am addicted to this song.Do I regret? ABSOLUTLEY NO!
Conroy's not dead. He lives on inside your mind everytime you read Batman's lines in a comic book.

No one bats an eye.
Write a comment, get noticed by a famous RUclipsr.
Everyone loses their minds. (And comments as well under your post)
nice try
so true. XD
Of course no one reacts when a simple comment is posted, because it's all part of the plan.
Bats an eye...
I just realized the quiet pun.
Watching Ben Affleck beat the ever living shit out of bad guys in Batman v Superman just brought this song back to my head.
Yeah, and Ben was one badass Batman to boot. I actually like the Affleck Batman a lot more than the Bale Batman.
i like Micheal Keaton
That’s scene was obviously a Arkham inspired (Snyder is too much a nerd to not have played it)
RIP Kevin Conroy. You WERE and Always WILL be... Batman.
*"A FEAR THAT LIES IN SHADOWS CANNOT FADE"* 🗣️🗣️🗣️
I am the spite, I am the pain repaid...it sounds like a perfect warcry for a character who has lost everything but the desire for retribution.
Honestly if the Arkham games got a movie series it'd probably be enough to kick marvel out of theaters and give DC the spotlight
Not even. Just ONE Arkhamverse movie, and not even the return of RDJ would bring back Marvel’s box office.
Dc should look to the Arkham games to make movies. These games have their characters down right. Not a Batman who kills but a Batman who’s lost too much but still fights.
All I want is for the fanwar to be destroyed.
Though, an Arkhamverse movie series does sound cool.
We all do, Robert Simon.
I agree
The Comfort Of Man Know’s No Bounds
Incredible Music
So much to Enjoy
THIS IS FANTASTIC. I absolutely love how the song packs a punch when you listen, kind of how Batman is. He is sneaky in the shadows and then WHAM.
I don't think I'll ever get tired of listening to this song. That alone shows how good it is. Nice work 👍
I AM THE NIGHT!!!! A TYRANT OF THE SHADE! I AM THE SPITE!!!!!! I AM THE PAIN REPAID!!!! I AM THE NIGHT!!!!!
"This riddles just a race..." That's for sure. My 4 attempts on the cross Gotham race are a testament to that.
References to previous songs that I noticed:
The instrumental between verses is from Rise.
"Check my head. I Guess the Jokes on me. I'm not laughing at the irony" Direct quote from Mind of the Bat.
"A fear that lies in shadows cannot fade". Possible reference to "Immortal Shadows sacrifice the sprawl" from Rise.
"Terror from the skies". Possible reference to "Look to the sky at a night. I scan the highest heights." from Mind of the Bat.
Couldn't spot a Joker's Song reference outside of the laugh in the background at one point.
If anyone found other possible references please let me know. :)
James F "Crush the Light. I am the night". Possible reference to "Watch the night suffocate all the light as it smothers the sun" from Joer's Song. Found one :D
James F Well thematically it reminds me of the Joker's song, where it says "We are two of kind, violent, unsound of mind." And in this song it's said "I am the pain repaid" from Batman's perspective.
Joker called it out: In the end Batman is also a violent psychopath in some way and now he seems to have accepted his violent nature.
Also, the choir in between verses is the same as the choir tune used during Mind of the Bat
James F and it sound a bit like Paleblood moon for some reason to me...
James F Don't think there were any lyrical references to Mind of the Bat, but the song itself has the same tune as Mind of the Bat, just changed up.
Oh my goodness. The audio is absolutely luscious. I mean, I can actually feel the music all over my ears. It's an experience, truly. Excellent work, to say the least. That new mic of yours was definitely a worthy investment. P.s. Loved the calls back to Mind of the Bat and Rise.
Jennifer Alt Thanks! Yeah the new vocal mic makes quite a difference. It brings out the vocal flaws more too so had to give a better performance than usual haha. The orchestral bits took feckin forever to compose & make but I am happy with the result & feel it was worth it :)
miracleofsound More than worth it! Awesome job!
miracleofsound next you should make a ARK survival evolved song, as it is preastoric and we havent heard any jungley music. I think this would be great, like if you also agree, PS. Great song
0:51 never gets old.
It never ceases to amaze me on how natural all of the callbacks to your previous songs seem so natural. Another amazing song, thank you.
I don't know how I missed this song when it came out. This is amazing. I love the musical callbacks to Rise and the use of lyrics from Mind of the Bat. Well done, Gav!
I feel like this song isn't just about Bruce. I feel like it applies equally to Jason
"A curtain call"
Both Bruce and Jason know this is Batman's last night
"The wings are waiting for the night to fall"
Jason's waiting for the "Knight" (Batman) to fall
"Spread over the stage, can't keep me out"
Jason's army settles in over Gotham, and Batman is powerless to stop it.
"I've always pummeled through the doors of doubt"
Jason had to overcome his own feelings towards Batman to get to where he is.
"Power through the plagues"
Jason survived Joker's torture
"Wit for pace, this riddle's just a race"
The riddle is who the AK is. It's a race between Batman and Jason.
"Old self pities cleanse this city's waste"
Exactly what drove Jason here.
"I am the night"
He is the Knight
"A tyrant of the shade"
He rules the night during the game.
"I am the spite, I am the pain repaid"
He's going after Batman out of spite in order to repay the pain he caused him.
"A fear that lies in shadow can not fade"
Exactly what he and Scarecrow intend to fix.
"Crush the light"
He plans to crush the Batman
"Listening, the ripple of a heartbeat quickening"
Jason knows his plan is speeding up, drawing closer to the end.
"Fear behind the eyes, uneasy prey"
How he sees Batman during all of this.
"The broken bones litter the alleyways"
Only line I can't justify for Jason.
"Terror from the skies"
Jason has a lot of aerial drones
"Check my head I guess the joke's on me"
The mark of the Joker is branded on his face. Jason's saying this literally
"I'm not laughing at the irony"
Jason sees the irony in Batman being the one in the dark.
"The chill of the shadow that lurks inside this mind, it builds"
Jason senses his darkness and anger building
"Breathe the fear out"
Jason rejects Scarecrow's plan
"And face it one last time"
Jason helps Batman in the end by facing Scarecrow.
there are spoilers above. Just so you know
I think a lot of them actually have to do with the actual game play "this riddle is just a race" might be said because most the riddler challenges are races, and I think they hint the "knight fall protocol"
+Trek Video As Jason Todd is my favorite DC character, you made this song that much better for me.
I think that broken bones means Jason is seeing batman taking down his forces and is getting closer to jason
Maximum Gaming that could work
This song is really something, I mean.. I'm the pain repaid .. WOW 😲
The second time you said "I am the pain repaid." you 100% should've said "I am the peoples rage."
Love it when your songs have hints of previous songs you have done yet feel different. Great work again!
Hi, the night. I'm dad.
This is why his parents were shot.
damn ^^
Savage
Salem Andrada hi I'm dad I'm Steve
Austyfrost 1 Hi Steve, I'm Daddy
"I am the pebble in your shoe..."
"I am the browny tray that calls out to you in the night.."
"I am the last squirt of toothpaste you can't get out..."
"I AM DARK WING DUCK-I um...I mean...I AM BATMAN!"
Man, so much of this feels like it would be right at home in the soundtrack to the Nolan movies, and that is a very good thing. Plus the lyrical and musical references to mind of the bat were just perfect. A+. Loving the results that this slower schedule is showing.
Haunting! I simply adore how elements of each past Batman song of yours factor into this one, and they all fit so well! Thank you for never failing to deliver amazing pieces like this!
Holy shit the callbacks to your previous songs. That was great.
I want Mind of The Bat, Joker's Song and I am The Night to be placed into a Batman musical. Maybe Rise if Ra's Al Ghul is involved. They're all just so damn good.
"Out of Black a Hero Forms"
Superhero musicals don't have a good track record, unfortunately. It would be epic though
If you refer to the comment by Calvatron, Lord of Nothing
This would make a great duet between Batman and Todd. Imagine the dramatic lighting in primary colors at low angles for long dark shadows that stretch towards each other, each standing on a rooftop staring each other down, just before the curtain falls for intermission.
The scenery is dark and angular, built so that the actors can climb and jump across it. A trap door behind a building on one side lets them disappear as they fall from the rooftops to the street below. As the musical progresses the lighting colors begin to clash more as they're forced onto the stage together. Small fires (spotlights) break out, and a pattern of rust and cracks may be projected over the corners of the set or the empty floor in the center stage
Strong red for Todd, cool dark often grayish blue for Batman, amber for scarecrow bane or Al ghoul, violet for joker because he's allowed to break the color scheme and represents the break between Batman and Todd.
The whole thing would be relatively cheap to build unless you added flying wires, which are kind of necessary with the whole grappling hook thing Batman's known for.
Can you tell I'm taking a technical theatre class? lol
Well, if they can make spongebob into a musical I’m sure they could pull off Batman.
I just don't get how everyone of your songs just get better and better.
Keep up the good work, Gav!
He may be gone but he will never be forgotten RIP dark knight
There needs to be a metal version of this
This is an unbelievably amazing song, I don't see how there could be a more apt definition for "Miracle of Sound." I have been listening to your songs for about 3 years now (ever since the Commander Shepard song) and I haven't heard a single one I didn't like. I honestly don't get why you don't have more subscribers, you are one of the best and most deserving artists on RUclips, and one of the best musicians I've heard.
TheBusStopGuy Thank you very much :) Thanks for sticking around!
miracleofsound No problem, you've made it a very enjoyable stay.
miracleofsound please do an AC rogue one
Another amazing Batman song, definitely gonna download this one, keep them coming Gav!
Wooow the quality is amazing . You keep overcoming you keep the awesome work!!
This song also *perfectly* fits Konrad Curze, Primarch of the Night Lords, the Night Haunter, of Warhammer 40k-fame. Oddly enough, it's in the lines that you'd least expect to fit any character except Batman:
"The chill of the shadow that lurks inside the mind... it builds... breathe the fear out and face it one last time..." If you read the character of Konrad Curze having a split personality, the "Night Haunter", these lines describe his eventual death at the hand of a Culexus Assassin perfectly: Konrad, the noble fighter for justice, had his entire life corrupted by the darkness within him. By facing his own fear and allowing himself to be killed so that he, Konrad, would finally put the Night Haunter down, he achieved his own sort of redemption.
miracleofsound you never cease to amaze with your fantastic and creative creations . This is epic . You are without a doubt one of the best RUclips artists our there , one of the best rockers out there .
Smokey Beard Thank you very much :)
Woooooooooohhh, This is so epic. So good. Love it. Spot on vocals and lyrcs, just Great.
Just noticed this was released on my birthday last year. Thank you for the present Gav
"this riddles just a race" nice one
This exciting, strong and beautiful song deserves first place in Billboard. You managed perfectly convey the darkness, that comes with Batman. This is one my most favorite songs, along with "Wake the White Wolf", "Beneath the Black Flag
and the god-like "Fires Far". You have shockingly beautiful voice, Gavin, so deep and strong, but even for me is very easy to sing along with you. I think, it's unique. Thanks for such amazing songs and keep going the same way))
Every song of yours I listen to, I always gets shivers running down my spine, feeling as if they are about to lift me to Eden.
Just noticed something cool. The lyrics at 1:50 are from mind of the bat and at around 2:18 it has some of the melody from Rise. I love when you do stuff like that.
Also just generally love your music.
It's SO epic and beautiful, I can't breathe...
The music is fantastic, it's quite similar to James Newton Howard's and Hans Zimmer's score in The Dark Knight Trilogy, great song dude this song reminds us of how the Batman died in the final chapter of the Arkham series. Best dramatic piano music.
What a flippin' awesome song! I've been keen to hear it ever since Gav first announced it on fb. His voice is fantastic but - blimey! - he managed to make it sound even better in this video. Great work - I'm speechless.
I love this song, it's just pure awesomeness. Also, that moment at about 0:50 when Two-face fires a rocket, batman jumps out of the car and the chorus starts is the most epic thing i've seen in a long time.
Damn Gav. Your voice sounds really good in this one, or well, its other than in your older songs. Keep up the amazing work!
Duch Got a new vocal mic :)
0:48 just remind me of Val Kilmer's Batman
Gav, this song is what got me hooked on your music! Keep up the good work man! :)
I love how Gav always references his own stuff. Not a lot of people have the balls to do that, and it always put's a smile on my face.
+Kristian Bailey Agreed, I feel like it adds a sense of continuity to the songs, like even if you couldn't see the videos themselves you could tell they followed on from one another just by listening to the lyrics. It's like each song Gav does for a franchise is one link in a larger chain.
