I went through the same with my dad and your right the smell of the flux, solder, and jointing compound remind me of my late dad giving me my introduction to plumbing in 1974 and I've been at it since,
People underestimate the importance of a father role model and the benefits of having a man in the life of children especially boys.
Boys that have a good father are less likely to end up in trouble or jail.

I just finished my nvq for plumbing. At 35 so it's possible. I am now working full time on new builds. Money is alight but the future money will be excellent. I was in the same position after not being able to join up. Was depressed but getting a trade and getting on site will help. Lots of money to be made.
Same here bro im 28 and was doing firefighting/ems last year and totally hated the ems side so i left and felt disappointed. I didnt want to go to back to a dead end job i so i decided to apply for the plumbing union and they accepted me to start an apprenticeship this spring

Great video James, coming up to 3 years out my time in the industrial/commercial side of the heating industry. Would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone, no debt like you’d have with uni and great money towards the end and when qualified. Enjoy the holiday 👍🏼

Great video and a great insight into the industry. I'm 34, currently re training as a plumber in college of an evening. Wish I had gotten a trade sooner but fell into a job earning good money but didn't enjoy it. But now I'm really enjoying plumbing, doing jobs for friends and family. Looking forward to what the future holds. Alot of your videos have come in handy and I have learnt alot from them 👍👍

I used to go out on site with my dad when I was at school. This was early 80s. He was a plumber and I would go out with him during school holidays. It was great because he would pay me too! Just done some plumbing in my new house and those smells, the solder, the flux etc really bought back those memories for me 40 years later. I still ring him for advice before starting a job. I never followed in his footsteps but those days working with him will be with me always
Great vid mate, I first went to six form to become a sports scientist, not being able to do that I turned to plumbing about 7 years ago, must admit the 4 year apprenticeship was bloody hard, but best thing I've ever done, now I'm a fully qualified plumbing, heating and gas engineer 👍

Currently finishing up my Gas Exams, through level 1, nvq level 2 & nvq level 3 long haul with covid into 6th academic year, worked in banking for 14 years and never looked back yet...
Apart from everything the money can be really good, work to live don't live to work 🙏 💯

Completed my City and Guilds level 2 back in 2019 at the age of 37. The plan being to become a plumber. Unfortunately I couldn't get anyone to take me on for the NVQ assessments. Long story short I now work for a large water undertaker as a Water Regulations Engineer. I have since take qualifications in water regs and legionella. I have also offered to work for free to local plumbers to again the NVQ element with no luck. Just thankful I got a good job in water utilities.
So what’s the point of this course if you then struggle to get your nvq I’m in the same position right now and not sure what to do really
@@danielabramov887 im paying £4200 for a gas safe ACS course. So much classroom then 6months minimum getting 40 pieces of evidence and then exams and im fully qualified. Should take around 10 months. You need a friend who is a plumber or you'll struggle to get all 40 pieces of evidence mate.
Hi James, we really like your videos. Please could you do a video at some point on cross head/manual radiator valves as we can’t find any videos featuring problems with these. We have them on our bathroom radiator which is having issues not heating up.

Hi, I used to be Chartered Accountant and worked in finance in international companies for many years. The stress of the job and office life got to me at the end and I did a plumbing training 10 years ago and has been self-employed plumber since - never regreted it!! Used to watch Plumberparts a lot at the beginning, it was a huge help. Thanks James!!

Hey Alex, your situation is similar to mine. I'm 28 so I'm not like the younger guys out there, please, do you have any tips on writing a cover letter to a potential employer to get an apprenticeship??
This is a great vid. I can totally relate to this. I'm not a plumber, but I've spent 35 years on the tools. You can't beat it. Banter, good humour, a great sense of achievement when you fix something shitty. Even after all these years I still get a buzz when I get a good result.
Put it this way - so many people in the modern workplace spend their lives sat in front of a pc, every minute of their day being monitored, office politics - all that bullshit. nah, that's not for me. Get an apprenticeship, get on the tools, get to college. If you enjoy your job, work isn't a chore.

This was a great video, although I am a spark and wires have always been my love. When any of my own plumbing jobs came along real plumbers are always helpful in in fact you meet so many tradesmen while on the job advice is never a problem. When needing a house came along the number of people who I had meet through work was invaluable. Right from my solicitor to a friend with JCBs made it into a DIY home build job. Keep up the good work, my wife thinks I am a bit odd watching the videos and especially when I treat nice tools like pieces of jewellery.

sounds like a good company you first worked for, I've done industrial doors for 32 years and many aspects of it and the best thing is the people you meet on site , some I've been going for over 20 years it turns into a family and that's the biggest step as once you have trust on site that's 60% of the job done as they know your not telling them lies when the job turns expensive, and its very nice when they request you back too site

I am the same. Uni was good but it never really gave me anything to use in life as a career. I am really not sure what to do with myself anymore.
Gosh I wish I was a younger man and able to take up a plumbing course. I have turned 62 and I wish I had achieved it.
From and outsider looking in I think even in the later stages of a trade person's life he/she can do light work to keep active
I have just watched this, and how uncanny is this, my grandson went to the local collage today to look at courses.
He is not yet 100% sure what trade to get into, but this vidio applies to all trades.
So I am going to make him watch this and hope it helps...

Good video. I'm 36 years old and working in engineering. But when company I worked for 10 years bankrupt my and my mate decided to change our profession. So I start my NVQ level 2. Hoping soon start working in this industry 😊

Sounds like I went through a similar apprenticeship your dad. I left that industry for civil/structural engineering to get a degree but now after 6 years I’d like to get gas safe and get back on the tools.
What do you think of going through a training centre? I have an NVQ in mechanical engineering maintenance but would like to get into the domestic market.
I'll be 29 in January and have really been thinking about learning a trade. I've been leaning heavily into HVAC or plumbing.

That is what I have said to any kids I know, is unless you are doing a degree at uni that will lead to a job ie DR, dentist, architect etc get an apprenticeship in a trade or at an engineering company.

Did my City & Guilds Level 2 but unfortunately getting an Apprenticeship just did not materialise
Try getting housing associations , I know of one in Birmingham that advertised for them

I’d love to be a plumber but I’m disabled and have two chronic health conditions that make it difficult to move or co ordinate my limbs. I do my own plumbing in very slow time, it takes me about a week to do what an average plumber would do in about an hour. The upside of this is what I do manage to do is well thought out. Sadly I’ll never make any money through plumbing, so what I need to do is convince a group of plumbers to just give me a slice of their earnings…anyone interested? Thought not!

I’m looking into plumbing schools here in NYC. The school that I like is 5 stars and it’s $18,000. I’m 23 years old, I am a felon but I am a hard worker. A lot of people are telling me to get into trades by the school or find an apprenticeship job. I can’t find any jobs that won’t take me without school, should I just go to the school? I’m very nervous about dropping out cause it might be to hard. But I’m not trying to stay in that mind set. I never liked school, never really built things or fixed things. But I have nothing to loose by going into school, can you give me some advice in this situation? I heard plumbing jobs are felon friendly. I just want something that will help me make good money and a career.

I'm unsure why I wasted my time watching your video for a job that is definitely not for me ( I am not male, white, qualified, strong, healthy) but the long term unemployment as well as chronic illness has increased my desperation to get ANY entry level job, especially during this cost of living crisis, and with
I can't even drive yet in spite of getting into debts from the amount of driving lessons I invested in.
I envy people in any industry who have jobs.
Anyway, I learned that plumbers actually have thorough training and it's also got me thinking that it would be nice to have more women working within plumbing for the sake of equality.
PS I felt very emotional listening to your father speaking with knowledge and pride.
My father passed away last year, he never taught me such things as my parents had stopped working by the time I was born.
Protect your father as long as you can,once they're gone it all changes.
I'm 40 and my plumbing experience has gone from zero to installing a new radiator in my bathroom in the space of about a year. Pretty much done from the videos I watch here. Any plumbing bits I've done have had an issue along the way but I have managed to work it out.

Firstly, be aware that there's a LOT of driving. A LOT! Do you live in a good area? What's the competition like?
Well there will be very few true plumbers, plumber comes from the Latin plumbo which means worker of lead , when I served my time we covered all aspects of plumbing including lead-work I doubt there are many of us left , my local college doesn’t teach lead-work to apprentices as it’s too expensive then again the tutors probably don’t have a clue either

I’ve got my level 2 and 3 city and guilds in plumbing studies but couldn’t get an apprenticeship anywhere. I would love to be an apprentice even for free. My passion is plumbing but I end up getting depressed. I’m now working as a maintenance technician for Marriott hotel but I’ll snap at the opportunity to be an apprenticeship 😅

Just get on agency plumbing jobs the amount of chances you get in the industry just learn as you go like everyone else does! Fake it till you make it!
A lot of plumbers aren't aware of the benefits they can receive by taking on an apprentice. With all the grant funding it's a no-brainer, especially for those sole traders looking to expand but unsure if they can. You can read up the benefits then sell yourself and the benefits to them.

Eh I know a lad at our place he gets £13 an hr as a plumber my mate asked him to move a radiator pipe to get a bigger radiator on he tried to charge £140 for an hours work lol he ended up doing it for nothing because they ended up arguing an he just threw him out, greedy that.
