Hey guys, as someone who was in high school in the late '70s & early '80s, to be honest, there wasn't really a clear demarcation between the two decades. The aura of '70s pop culture/music kind of carried over seamlessly into the early '80s. It really wasn't until the mid-'80s that the '80s-style new wave and hair metal bands took over.

I always thought "Sirius" was just the opening of "Eye in the Sky." :-) Back in the day, rock stations would play both tracks back-to-back, flowing into each other. (Like how rock stations would play Queen's "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" back-to-back and "Queen's "Bicycle Race" and "Fat-Bottomed Girls" back-to-back as a medley.)

Arrangers decide on song structure and instrumentation, they sort of put in practice the musical idea that the composer brings in. You do this, you do that, here we need more keys, there we need a solo...

    • @jimehman8547
      @jimehman8547 3 года назад +6

An arranger decides on what instruments play what parts and how the song is put together. Imagine that someone has written a song with chords and a melody. The arranger takes that and decides what instruments are going to play what parts. So in a rock band, they would say change who is playing what part. Instead of a guitar, we'll have a piano playing there. But they can also alter the song by changing the notes that those instruments are going to play, and many times, what chords those individual parts are going to make up. Because arrangers many times change the chords played in the songs. They alter chords, or substitute them completely for other chords, so that the melody line though the same, sounds completely different. If you want to see what an arranger can do with a song, watch the quite awesome breakdown of Whitney Houston singing the National Anthem back in the early nineties. The arranger completely changes the chord structure and the outcome is one of the best renditions ever. You would think that this is all because of Whitney's singing, and she does completely slay the song, but the arrangement is another element that brings it all to the next level. ruclips.net/video/zCBiTdFLuh8/видео.html

The typical role of the arranger is to choose what parts will make up the song. In rock, drums, bass, guitar, piano, vocal and vocal harmony are pretty standard arrangement. The arranger would decide if there should be something more or less.

The arranger can mean several things. It typically means they came up with the way the song/album was going to sound. It can mean an arrangement for another artist/band which he did for too many massive artists. Excellent ear is what he is known for.

IIRC, Alan Parson's has said it is about the Egyptian god Ra. I used to listen to a _lot_ of his albums. He was an audio engineer at Abbey Road Studios in London and worked on some of the Beatles' last albums. Then he did the engineering on Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" and he is almost revered for it to this day. His first album was called "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" about the stories of Edgar Allan Poe.
The 1980s were loved until mid-decade and then so much of the music just fell off a cliff and has been in the garbage bin ever since, with a few exceptions.

I feel like tons of early 80s songs, especially rock songs, have a 70s vibe to them. This is due to the fact that the production values that we normally associate with being "the 80s sound" hadn't come into full effect until midway into the decade.
    some examples:
    Survivor - Poor Man's Son
Blue Oyster Cult - Burnin' For You

I've lived through many decades of music. The 80s was a shallow decade. But that shallowness started with disco in the late 70s. I like the 70s and the 90s the best. And some of the 60s. My dad was about the big Bandstand from the 1940s and my mom like to doo-wop from the 50s. Every now and then I hear a song from today's day and age that I like. There's still hope for us✌🇺🇸✌🇺🇸✌🇺🇸

Many songs from 1980-81 still have a 1970s vibe, being so close and/or even recorded in 1979 before released in the early '80s. ... Are you familiar with the band Ambrosia and their 1980 hit song "Biggest Part of Me" (No. 3 on Billboard Hot 100)? Great mid-tempo blues-rock love song, and the vocals and harmonies and musicians are top-notch.

The "Eye in the Sky" refers to the security cameras in a casino. Try listening from that "viewpoint" and see how the lyrics jibe with that. I don't think the entire song is about gambling, per se, but the album this song comes from follows right after the album "Turn of a Friendly Card" which had a heavy gambling theme.

arranging is similar to composing.... arranging takes a piece of music and arranges the parts for different musical instruments.

Live in Chicago, saw an interview with Alan, he said they haven’t made a penny from Bulls using the song as the league has a blanket agreement with music industry to use music and songs, it’s seen as promoting the music

Hi guys, I'm new to the channel and am making my way through your backlist. I really like your openess to different genres, and how you seem to enjoy dissecting both the lyrics and technical aspects of the songs.
That said, I'm really surprised that y'all have not reacted to any Yes. Do y'all already know Yes? If not, would you appreciate suggestions as to where to start with them?

Alan Parsons was the engineer on some of the most iconic albums of all time including The Beatles “Abbey Road” and “Let It Be” as well as Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of The Moon”. Pretty good credentials. And also managed to find success with Alan Parsons Project with this song “Eye In The Sky” bringing commercial success with it reaching #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. Gotta strongly disagree with the opinion of the 80s being disrespected. On the contrary, As someone who was growing up in the 80s and was completely immersed in the amazing variety of music which came about as a result of the second British Invasion as well as the exposure to much new music as a result of early MTV, I think most music critics and historians regard the 80s as probably the most fruitful era aside from the 60s. There are so many iconic songs and albums from the 80s (Thriller, Purple Rain, Born In The USA, just to drop a few 80s iconic titles which still resonate today) as compared to the mess of a decade which were the 90s. No competition at all.

"An 80's song that sounds like the 70's" ?...
I guess "Heartbreaker" by Dionne Warwick (a song composed by the Gibbs brothers) and "Moonlight shadow" by Mike Oldfield could fit this description...

an arranger determines what instrument plays what part. what classical people call an "arrangement" is similar to what young people today might call a "remix"

I'm new here. I checked out earlier videos. I was 13 in 1970. I went to concerts a lot! Sang in local bands in my 20s. I love music from every decade. I didn't like hair bands much. I always thought the lryics were about a couple. The guy is onto her BS. He finally has enough and calmly tells her he's done.

You need to listen to the first Tales and Mystery and second album I ROBOT / AP Project before you listen to any other APP songs and SIRUS should be with Eye Sky always as it is on the album..The inner cover album sleeve does have pics of satellites on it ..The original vid of I Wouldn't Wanna Be like YOU , he seems to be battling a Robot in a company industrial tech room with computers as if there is a warning about Artificial Intell against humanity
