@@xelalex1714yes, there's a written announcement made by his partner on the community section of his youtube page. Very sad, I didn't know him personally but his tutorials are the best around.
Great video! One tiny detail: when you say "raw leather" and "untanned leather", what you mean is "undyed leather", i.e., the layer beneath the dyed surface. It is a detail, but as a leatherworker I had to point it out.
Recently got into mini painting and this was a great tutorial. Also realized that I should dig up grandpa’s old binocular case to get a proper look at aged leather. The straps on it really got a lot of that lighter brown and white-ish color on it. Been used a lot when he sailed the seas (well he mostly saw the engine room)
Watched the video today and instantly tried it! Easy to learn for a (not 100% perfect) TT-Standard. Really like the look of that warm dark leather. Exactly what I was looking for! 😃👍🏻 This will become May Go-To-Recipe for Space Marine pouches! Thanks!
Thanks for this nice video. I suggest adding dark blue or dark violet to the shadow instead of black to add color variations. similarily I add orange or reddish colors to the midtones.
I guess it will come with practice but I am failing to do the second part with the Ushabti Bone. I am using the same Broken Toad brushes as well! When I’m doing the tappy lines I either have too much on the brush so it comes out blobby. Or it just looks like dots and not much paint is coming off.
I discovered this video recently, it inspired me to start painting figurines again. I just found out that there is only a limited number of movies left to see, no new movies will be made. Thank you Mr. Robert for inspiration, if you have the opportunity please kiss my mother for me.
Great vid man. I’m going to give this scratched up look a try today. Off topic: I have to wonder though the fact that Astartes deal in such high temperatures, to include walking through fire and operating in zero atmosphere environments, if leather kit is believable. Leather Makes for fun painting though 😁
You play Raptors? Nice, I've honestly never seen anyone else play them, I noticed your painting tutorials, you would happen to have one on how to get the white for the details cleaner on green (or other dark colors)?
Enjoy all your videos. Just bought my first Warhammer set and Im using all your tutorials to paint my minis with. Can you please tell me where you get your cork? Its perfect for they way you paint your minis. Also, where did you get the wire for your mini support and what size? Thanks
I've noticed you use brown leather on the harness and pounches, only a few painters in white dwarf used brown. Mostly in the codex and official gw photos it's just Abaddon black with grey edge highlights.
It depends on the Chapter for me. I prefer brown leather on Raptors because the red-brown colour of the Rhinox hide base compliments the Olive Green armour and ties in to the Red-Brown shadows I use. For something bright like Imperial Fists I would use black. I actually want to try and see if I can recreate the appearance of Cordura Nylon at this scale but it will probably be very difficult to get the reflection pattern across on such a tiny model.
I find it so weird we paint space marines with leather accessories. I have a complete love hate feeling for the phobos primaris...rogue.... wizard.....🤔 Love your vids!
Rob I love your video's But I tend to use a little more red brown in my leather. I always thought the Rhinox Hide looked a little unnatural for leather. I am just wondering if you use those colors because games workshop says too or if you all think they look right? But rob your technique is spot on for a stabletop standard.
There is no one true colour for leather. A quick image search for leather belts will reveal that truth. I use whatever I think will look best in the composition so the surrounding colours usually dictate it.
@@RobPaintsModels Thanks for the reply. That makes a lot of sense. I am still trying to figure this whole mini painting thing out and you video's have helped a lot with my own work.
I’m a new painter can I ask how you pull the model apart off the pegs at this stage I Find just from spinning my Completed models around enough times while painting it I have to go over other areas because the dried paint seems to come off and need to be touched up? Am I doing something wrong?
I am just curious Rob this is obviously well above table top level. In your own opinion what sort of level is it? I don't like comparing anything to Golden Demon standard. But it seems very high. By the way amazing lesson awesome stuff and love your stuff.
Well technically this is Golden Demon standard as it's the method I used to paint the leather on my Golden Demon entries but I also use this method on my tabletop figures as well because it's not actually that huge of a difference in terms of time taken when you're batch painting.
How do you make the paint last so long on your brush watching this video my paint drys within seconds sometimes before I can get it on the model I've tried using water but that turns more to a glaze than I fine line like that.... fantastic videos by the way hope all your health issues are improving :)
Stay away from the smallest brushes, you need the brush to be able to hold some pant. There is retarders you could use that will slow the drying time of the paint though, but water and a bit of tissuepaper to flicj the excess is usually enough :)
Considering they live for thousands of years in apocalyptical battlefield conditions leather would seem an odd choice for material as part of their kit.
So weird to see someone go to the trouble of sticking a figure to a big handle and then constantly brace their fingers on the figure. Great tutorial though 😉
You say tanned when you mean polished or dyed. All leather is tanned before anything is done with it otherwise it would be a raw hide and it would just rot.
This vid is amazing, but has anyone done this with Vallejo paints? I don't have a thousand colors. The ones I've used end up looking like a satchel of poo.
I don't get it. In the 41st millennium no one would equip millions/billions of soldiers with actual leather. It would be some synthetic material, tactical, robust, and cheap - like today's soldiers.
Always hard to tell what material things are supposed to be, like all the small skulls. Metal? Bone? Purity seals on jet fighter? Is that even wax and paper? The list goes on. Fluffwise it's obvious that there are so many references in 40k to our real contemporary/historical world. Romans, templars, angels and so on. In that context real or coloured leather seems kind of trivial? This leather could be orange or pink, it still wouldn't make much sense.
That would imply the Imperium knows how to make those things. Often they don't. Many planets of the Imperium are of a medieval level of technology or even less, with so.e profound and bizarre exceptions. Leather is comparatively cheap and easy to work, can be made by a bunch of backwater worlds, and is a way they can contribute to the Imperium's war machine.
One of the most detailed and easy to follow tutorials for leather I've found. Thanks for not using every brownish colour GW makes. :D
RIP Rob you were the first person I started watching when I got into the hobby. You are greatly missed.

Very useful. My current marine pouches are just black so this seems like a good way to bring some more colour to my models
Looking so goooooood, gotta looking forward to pamper my Marines with this!
I've tried, it´s good dude!
top work but i recommend a little bit purple in to the leather this brings a cool look 😊
Just a great video. Easy to follow, explained in very clear way while including lots of interesting details. Thank you so much! Just what I needed.

"for space marines" or for pirate orks who have fine taste in hats
This vid is amazing, but has anyone done this with Vallejo paints? I don't have a thousand colors. The ones I've used end up looking like a satchel of poo.
Has anyone actually gotten this to work?
Everything just turns into a faded smeared mess when the wash hits it
The water seems to reactivate the layers underneath

Nice job indeed. Why would a futuristic Space Marine still be using leather-anything? Not a wargamer.
They have a reverence for things that are handcrafted and ancient.
Also because it's a "far future dark age" which mixes medieval sensibilities with far future, barely understood tech.
