Another note about the BoP misprint is that the original wording just said 'Add one mana' which has created some debate in the alpha40 community which follows a ruleset designed to emulate the experience of playing at the release of alpha (40 card decks, no 4-of rule, continuous artifacts turned off when tapped, etc). It's not exactly a misprint but it is a design oversight. The other two cards in the set that make any color of mana (lotus and celestial prism) say that specifically, but so do the cards that make colorless mana (sol ring, mana vault, basalt monolith). In the community, BoP does tap for any color but there are folks that think it should make colorless instead.
Something that's easy to overlook about the original duals that's pretty impressive in hindsight is how they inform the player that it's possible to play more than one color in a deck. We take it for granted now but I could easily see players not wanting to or possibly not even thinking they can but once they see that there are lands that make two colors it really opens things up in their minds for what is possible.
I am so happy to see Resleevables on RUclips. Cedric and Patrick alone are enough to make any Magic content extremely educational and entertaining, but coupled with the editing and production, this is simple some of the best Magic the Gathering content ever created. The care and level of effort put into this is obvious and I hope they are both able to do this for a long time.
Finding this channel at Episode 1 is both a gift and a curse, wish I had more episodes to binge. Hope you re-do Alara, I didn't know this was a show before!
I'm finally catching up with the playlist of these videos, and I have to say I really appreciate Patrick's emotional/sentimental thoughts at the end. You can tell he really loves the game, and I feel that. Great stuff, guys.
Nothing ruined my year in 2022 more than realizing that I had listened to all of the old podcast and had no more resleevables. This is the best part of 2023
Sheesh, how am I just now finding this? I was an avid listener of the podcast in 2021. Over the course of 2022, not only did I slowly re-listen to every episode, but about once a month I would scour the internet for any news about The Resleevables possibly starting up again. I didn't realize I'd given up before 2023 started until I saw how long ago this was posted. Anyway, this was some truly expert level analysis. I thought I knew this set pretty well (I started playing with Revised too), but Patrick touched on some aspects I'd never considered. I definitely hadn't thought about how out of place Sedge Troll and Birds of Paradise are, probably since they've been part of the game since the beginning and I just didn't question it. But yeah, we've got a true Rakdos card and a five color mana dork in a set that otherwise wants you to be all in on mono-color decks. I'm looking forward to more observations like this in the upcoming videos.
This is the first, and likely only time, I've been genuinely excited to see a video RUclips recommended to me I listened to all the podcast episodes last year and was so disappointed when no more got released... Until now!
Great episode. What i love about early magic is the ambiguity of the lore in the cards. There are hints here and there but nothing concrete. Their ideas of planeswalkers just going here and there and getting lost really fills the gaps.
The biggest issue in the 90’s was getting hold of the cards you wanted. I had to beg my folks to find and take me to the various comic shops and LGS in neighboring towns to try to find a copy of any specific card. eBay and the internet were not yet a thing where one could locate and buy whatever you wanted across the nation.
Been looking for a digestible (and enjoyable) way to learn about the history of magic in chronological order. This is perfect. Ill be inching my way through the eps in the coming months till Im all caught up. Thanks for all of your hardwork!
Started with your 5th Edition video and now I'm watching them all. You don't know how many hours I've spent looking up things about the old sets and even the "newer" ones, lol. Thanks for doing these and I hope you can keep making them in the future.
This is legitimately the best piece of magic content i have seen in a long time. I was a fan of the original Resleevables, but the extra time and love you put into this is amazing and it definitely shows. I can't wait for the nest episode gents. You've got yourself a new patron.
@@patricksullivan9194 Thank you for the feedback and good luck with your future contributions to the mtg community. If the source of Magic ever dies, the community will persist with strength as long as they are aware of how powerful they/we are. Your content is essential in that respect. Cheers! -AM
Didn't know this was a podcast before this but I'm really glad this showed up in my recommendations. Hearing Patrick speak about ABUR was great. I'd love a whole video of him just talking about those sets and their designs with stories thrown in randomly. Good work, this was a fun video. Can't wait to see more.
I am new to this show. Saw you guys on TCC and I enjoyed your banter, but this is the best. I'm ready to start back at the beginning and fill in some gaps that I have.
Ecstatic to see the boys at it again. Resleevables is among my favorite media I've watched. Looking forward to seeing what yall have got in store for us!
Really excellent conclusion and can’t be overstated imo how incredible this is as the first CCG set ever made. There’s the quote about how aeronautics wasn’t an industry or a science but a miracle and I think ABU has some of that feel to it. Just like the early airplanes it’s of course not that there’s nowhere to learn or iterate on it but that seeing it in action makes you realize there’s this incredible thing that can be done that you never thought could be, that this thing is possible that wasn’t before. It’s really rare that something gets there on the first try, that the progenitor work just nails it, and Magic did, and you capture that really well here. Great, great video.
The amount of weekends i watched SCG series on twitch just for having a great time listening to you guys, are just immense, wish you the greatest of luck and success, not that you need because you're the GOAT, but it's the least i can do aside from subscribing and liking the videos.
Love this series and duo so much, I've been binge watching since the beginning, but I just wanted to say as someone who started playing MTG during this era, I am so glad to hear I am not the only person who never understood banding
So happy you are back. Hearing you both talk brings me back to the happiest times of Magic commentary for me when I was first getting into the game and watching your coverage any weekend it was on. Thanks for the awesome video, I'm looking forward to many more!
I didn't know how much I wanted this. Got into mtg about a year and a half ago and I'm really looking forward to having the older sets broken down for me.
I never met Patrick, but I knew his name from deck designs and tournament coverage.. I met Cedric a few times on the tour, I remember him standing quite broke in Rome at World's at a bus stop and chatting a bit with him. I guess he found the money to get home, because here he is still alive and kicking. I am excited to discover this series of set analysis . thank you gentlemen!
YES I am so glad to see these guys back! I've listened to the first run of the Resleevables twice through, so entertaining and informative . Hope you two are doing well.
Easy sub. It's so great to listen to the two of you share your thoughts on this OG set, especially with Patrick's having played with those cards. I started with Unlimited and Revised and those will always be nostalgic cards for me. Can't wait for episode 2.
i hear if i write something it helps you profit. thanks to come back guys. ur podcast was the one ive had a most fun listening of all mtg pods. its like 'top gear' of mtg world. once u have a great chemistry it just flows. good luck with ur YT version. i know ill watch them all.
This was a great watch. Ya'll captured the tone of a convention panel better than anything I've ever seen on RUclips, and I love it. I'm not a Magic player but I'm very interested in the history of the MTG as a fan of other card games, and this was very accessible to me.
they did something similar to the stoneforge mystic story recently: Expressive Iteration was banned in pioneer with the exception of in the "Izzet Phoenix" challenger deck, which I'm pretty sure came out like a week after the ban.
Aside from counterspells, other early Interrupts included cards which could change the properties of other cards as they were being cast, such as Slight of Mind, Magical Hack, or the "Lace" cycle.
To add to the misprints section, the reason they did not include Volcanic Island and COP Black in Alpha is due to not having art for the cards finished in time. The art for Birds of Paradise was originally intended to be the art for volcanic island but they did not like how it had so much focus on the bird. COP Black I think was just forgotten on accident. By the time Beta came around they still didn't have art for it and made it last second on a computer for the first digital MTG art.
According to Mark Poole (possibly Jesper Myrfors who I believe was lead art director at the time) the rumor that Birds of Paradise was intended to be Tropical Island is false. It was submitted as one of multiple iterations of art for basic Island, but Richard Garfield saw it and was inspired to create the infamous Birds.
I just keep thinking about individual lines from this video and coming back to watch it again. So glad to see the second coming of Resleevables and pumped for the next one!
Thrilled to see the Return of the Kings. The first run of the show got me through the 90 min drive each way to my first job out of college before we had a covid scare in the office and went full-remote.
Yeeeeeeees! Super happy for the return of the podcast, hopefully you'll get to publish the next episodes as audio in other platforms, too, in order to let more people enjoy it.
Love you Guys!! Sorry it took me so long to find this channel, I insta-subbed! Been playing since '95, don't forget about putting damage on the stack!! Lol
Fastest subscribe of my life. Loved the podcast version of the show. The two of you have been the voice of my primary hobby for the last decade or so. Thanks!
just started listening to The Resleevables podcast and I'm loving it. Super glad to see it continue after its haitus even if it's not in the form I'm currently consuming it!
Obviously from today's standpoint so many walls seems bad but I do appreciate the thought behind it of you're a powerful wizards and you builds walls to protect you from minions so you can just sling spells at the guy in the castle across from you without worrying about them.
So stoked to have this to look forward to again. Hoping you continue to jump around like the previous episodes. I’ve been hoping for a Tarkir episode forever and waiting a few years would make me so sad!

This is A+ quality content.
Yes it is

This is like christmas. I can't wait for the other sets. I didn't start playing until Kamigawa block and i can already feel the nostalgia hitting.

This is a gem that need's to be preserved and watched with good friends, thank you very very much for this channel !!
Glad to have this back! Excited for the new format!

As someone who picked up the game in 2018, these deep dives into the early sets are most likely the closest I’ll get to playing them. Appreciate!
So glad to see you back with the The Resleevables! It's really helpful to be able to see the cards as you talk about them.
