    The ' 67 Pontiac GTO and Tempest have always been my favorite cars, my dad used to work at a Pontiac dealership ( detailing) and I used to go after school and help him I was 13 -15 years old and it was exactly in that time period, oh man what great memories this video brought back Thanks a lot 🥲

    I got my license in 1980, I was 17. Like most kids I didn’t have a car. Not sure what happened, but we were visiting a family friend when an argument ensued with my mom about needing a car. A man two or three houses away waved me over and said “I’ll give you a car but it needs a battery. You go buy a battery and I’ll get the title.” It was a green Pontiac 1968 2-door Tempest OHC 6cyl. Went to Sears bought a battery, installed it and it started right up. He talked me into replacing the thermostat and replacing the radiator fluid, that’s it. It was actually a great reliable car. The motor did have a peculiar noise when it ran, almost like a whine.

    I've never been in one of these, but somehow I can smell the interior. Probably smells like the interior of the 1968 Olds Delta 88 that my Great-Grandfather had. Fantastic!

    What a beautiful Pontiac. A friend of mine has a bunch of these pontiacs. I did a video awhile back of road tripping to Conn. To rescue a 64 wagon out of a back yard that he bought. Definitely not in this condition of course. He has 2 67's like this, both LeMans, with 326's, one a hard top, the other a convertible. Hope the new owner loves this gem.

    Probably 20 years ago I was in a decent yard and I recall opening the hood of a 67 Firebird convertible that must have been an OHC-6 car because a Chevrolet 250 greeted me there. Parts were tough to find even when that car was parked. lol

    Beautiful 67. A friend of mine had a 67 Firebird with OHC 6 and a 4 Speed. These engines were solid runners, but lacked a lot in the power department.

    • @nomebear
      @nomebear 2 года назад +1

      The engine had the potential to be a lot more than it was. Headers, double overhead cams, multiple carbs, this could have been on par with the AMC / Chrysler straight six. Custom engine builders get high numbers in horsepower out of that venerable straight six.

      There were two OHC 6 cylinders for Pontiac. Only the Tempest Sprint 6 got the 215hp in-line six which was based on the regular OHC 6 but had a lot more aggressive tuning, compression, timing, etc. The Firebird had to make do with the regular Pontiac OHC 6 at 165hp.

  • @alanmaier
    @alanmaier 3 года назад +1

    My next door neighbor had one of those - the exhaust note is very special and unusual . The Quadrajet was factory ! It was the higher output version of that engine, and that is where the Sprint name came from. The 4 barrels were "sprint" models. The issue with them was that for the money, most people went with the 326 V8 - the OHC 6 was an enthusiast engine

Also had the 67 Firebird version: 3 speed manual with power windows. Ran great but rusted out from below. Your 67 Sprint is worth a mint to the right guy. Because the old school guys, who thought that the sixes had to suck, and if you wanted performance you bought a V8 were in power at GM in the 1970's. There was also a camp at GM that wanted to undo John DeLorean's influence, especially after the Vega fiasco.

    The 67 Lemans / Tempest /GTO is my number 1 favorite. The Sprint option is rare. I am not an expert but I believe that it was offered with the b barrel or 4 barrel with the example you are showing and the ultimate Sprint - 4 barrel 4 speed. The only things that I wondered about are the rear lights and the wood grain dash applique. Both were on Lemans features versus Tempest though they may have been included with the Sprint. The seat covers also look like a Lemans though I think that it would have had a center arm rest. These are all super nit-picky details that add to the car in my opinion. Love it !!

    A very period correct car. You should check out Jay Leno's. He did a feature on his not too long ago. There was a lot going on with those OHC 6's, spitting out quite a bit of HP for the day. If I'm not mistaken the V8 was standard and this 6 was more expensive. That engine cranks out a little over 200HP Not bad for 1967

    Over the years I bet a lot of these Tempests with factory straight 6s were swapped out for a V8. So to find one in all original condition with the original I-6 is really, really cool! I hope no one ever touches it. If you want a GTO, pay for it lol! Although I think these with their factory 6s are coming up in value. Jay Leno has a '67 Firebird with this motor that he's fixing up.

  • @warrenpuckett4203
    @warrenpuckett4203 2 года назад

    The AM tube radio still works. You never pull into the wrong side of the pump. Oh and IF you could find another OHC. There is a way getting a 292 crank into one of those 250 blocks with a OHV performance cam for those 6 cylinder CHEVY blocks.
    Or you could cut a one cylinder off Chevy 350 heads and weld them together. Use a 250 block, 292 crank and pull that OHC and keep it for posterity.
    Yes you got to fill & drill to make the head bolts line up. Got to make your own intake manifolds. But the exhaust are easy. They one for each side of a V--8.
    Just chop the right cylinders off them. Sounds really confusing if you go with dual exhaust.
    I knew somebody that did that in the 70s and raced it on dirt tracks against 350s in Chevelle bodies. Successfully. 4 1/8th inch bore x 3.75 in. stroke.
    yep Chevy used a lot of inter changeable engine parts BACK then. But crossflow I-6 was not one of them.
    Clifford still makes I-6 parts for those that don't weld drill and fill.
    I am guessing because we never dynoed it. It had about 300 HP and maybe 340 ft lb of torque? And used a 450 CFM 4 barrel. Same as the 283 chevy.
    That OHC engine has the same HP as a Corvair Monza 140. yes there was a 4 one barrel vesion and 180 HP turbo version The I6 has 60-80 ft lbs more torque.
    GM did a lot of differnt 6 bangers in the 60s. The as a aluminum V-6 for the Buick. Those OK even if it did not have power steering.
    Drove a 64 Tempest with a I-6 and a air cooled poweglide. Lasted forever. Never pulled the engine or the transmission
    The was even a 292 version that was used in step vans. The block was a bit more heavier.
    I always liked the OHC Pontiac but never had one. One of my friends wives had one and It was a 4 speed because she was not 3 pedal challenged.
    It also got way better gas mileage than the Pontiac 350 4 barrel Tempest I cobbled together that sucked premium.
    But then the govmint had to make cars after the 60s.

    That was my first car in 1974 I was 16
    Mine was not a Sprint but the same body style a 2 door Post car
    That engine was fragile as it requires frequent oil changes
    When I got mine the engine sounded like klack klack klack
    I had to put a new camshaft in it
    Maybe with modern oil the camshaft would have lasted longer

    The 230 OHC six was no joke. Had 215 HP with the 4bbl carb. Had a chance to buy one from a guy when I was in high school, a turquoise with a 4spd.

    Unfortunately the man from Ohio that bought it didn’t get to see this car through. It does have a 460 CI stroker motor in it with a different rear end. The original six was kept, the car now is sitting on crager mags with bf Goodrich white letter tires. Still looks amazing. I seen it at his funeral
