7 Foot Long Solid Wood Floating Shelves | How to Build and Install

  • Thanks to Moosehead Breweries for partnering with me on this project! Moosehead is on a mission to inspire and motivate Canadians to cross a task off their to-do lists - and earn a Beer With Your Name On It. I received a lot of submissions for what I could help you build (and get YOUR Beer With Your Name On It!). In this DIY woodworking video, I’ll show you how to build solid wood floating shelves and how to install floating shelves using floating shelf hardware. Long floating shelves can be a successful DIY project using the right hardware!
    There are a lot of shelf support brackets available on the market and it’s hard to know what to choose. I chose these ones for a few key reasons: weight capacity 100lbs+ (each extra brackets adds more capacity), you can anchor each support independently into your studs, and they are designed for a shelf thickness of 1-⅛ to 1-¼ inch.
    So, what projects will you tackle? Remember to post your accomplishment on Instagram before the end of summer and tag @moosehead, or simply visit beerwithyourname.com/ for a chance to score an actual beer with YOUR name on it! Must be of legal drinking age. Please enjoy responsibly. #Partner

    Last fall I bought a bunch of aromatic red cedar and had to do some substantial planing to get it where I wanted it (I was building a blanket chest). I did almost all of the planing over one day (to get it over with) and went straight into panel glueup, and was very very mad at myself a while later when it was all uneven. I assumed I messed up the planing, even though I thought I'd done it right. Now I'm thinking I did - I didn't let it rest between sessions at all, and it is humid as hell in Houston even in November. Thank you; I have learned something very valuable!
    Your shelves look great, as does your desk. You do fantastic work and are an inspiration.

    My Montreal condo was built (I suspect) without the use of a tape measure or level. The studs are randomly placed and the walls are not vertical either. Also the studs were not installed with all the crowns in the same orientation. But this condo is better than my previous condo in Verdun that used pressed paper instead of drywall.

    WOW! what a great job. Thanks for the extra details on your milling process, I did not know about the importance of taking equal amounts off each side/face, or to do the milling over a few days to let the wood reacclimatize. I had warping trouble in the past on re-sawed projects, now I'll no better for next time.

Also, great use of your shop space & equipment for milling 7ft boards. Watched your dust collection video and I can see how that paid off for you. • @jeffbaker8808
      @jeffbaker8808 Год назад +1

      The thicker the board, (or denser material), the higher the dead load, resulting in less capacity for storage load. Imagine a concrete shelf versus hollow box made out of plywood. Think of the number of beers you could store on each.

    After seeing David Picciuto do his smaller shelves I was tempted to try it, but seeing yours and how "tight" they were going on I'm going to pick up some. Those look great! I have to call shenanigans on how square everything was - that's just impossible! ;)

    • @DIYMontreal
      @DIYMontreal  Год назад +8

      lol if it makes you feel any better there's a bit of a bow in my walls so while each end of the shelves touch the wall at the back, there's a slight gap at the midpoint of the shelf. Nothing noticeable once you've got stuff on the shelves.
      I was a bit surprised at how loose the hardware was in the holes when you drop in a single rod, but it's really tight once you've got multiple bracket installed on the wall. Had to really fight them into submission!

    I have the same morbid fear of mounting stuff to the wall, only here where I live in South Africa our walls are all made of brick and mortar, so putting the holes in the wall is my biggest issue. I almost always mess it up! But then lately I have been using my late Dad's Bosch hammer drill and WOW! what a difference that thing makes. I mounted a massive boom arm to my studio wall a couple of days ago to hold one of my softboxes and so far it's held up OK. 😬
