Epoxy Resin and Water Balloons

- I poured epoxy resin over a box of water balloons to make a translucent piece of epoxy furniture. Water balloons covered in epoxy resin seems pretty random but I wanted to experiment with two different things. I wanted to know if the room temperature water would act as a heat sink that would allow me to pour deeper layers of epoxy without it going exothermic. I was also interested in using the forms to reduce the amount of epoxy needed for this side table while creating a nature inspired form factor. I recently went to antelope canyon and was inspired by the water carved sandstone rock formations. For the epoxy resin I used Total Boat ThickSet Fathom Deep Pour Clear Casting Epoxy and I polished the epoxy with my Ryobi Variable Speed Dual Action Polisher.

Awesome idea. And the second you popped that first Balkon, I thought: this would make for a rad plant container.
Although I'm not sure, if the amount of uv penetrating the epoxy would be enough to sustain plants long-term.
But it would be fun, to experiment with moss and other low light plants.
Swiss cheese table. Great idea
this was fun!
Yeah, add some yellow coloring...😄
I think it would be way cooler if the balloons were kept trapped inside the epoxi. That colorful look for me was amazing
exactly what i thought! and it would look absolutle gorgeous as faux column from floor to the ceiling
they would eventually degrade into goo thou
just saw this video now, saw your comment, and agree, Im going try out this project myself but I'm going to airbrush the insides with light pastel colours and then do a mother of pearl finish on top of the colours, I will post video on youtube when done and post a link here if you interested, but so glad I found this video, its so cool.
Cool project! Although the yellowish tone is not my favourite. Great work! Love the texture, the playful aspect and the funktionality :)
what if you stick taped the ends of the balloons down so they don't stick up. would that make them easier to remove after the epoxy sets?
Great project! All I could think about was where all that water was going and how you cleaned it up haha
Fun project. Is the yellowing from the resin getting too hot? Or is it just not a good clear resin? I'm not a fan of the faded yellow color. Maybe tinting it would be good if repeated? Maybe a bunch more small balloons? When is round 2? :D
I had the same question, maybe it’s from the mold release? Or pigment from balloons? I’m not sure either
Looks like wherever a orange balloon was, its caused a stain
I am guessing reaction of mold release and/or one of the balloons
I thought the same. Maybe with light blue or green dye it would reinforce the seaglass look
No matter what I guess resin will have a yellow tint when it age. So I guess it’s better to add some colour into it.
I actually think the look of keeping the balloons in it could've been super cool
yes! very colorful but wait till the plants grow into the voids
@@HomeMadeModern good point lol. I guess you'd have to fill em with air instead
Absolutely, it looked awesome with the balloons inside
Consistently an incredible idea/experiment generator! Personally not the biggest fan of the final outcome but the process is truly creative and fascinating!
The rainbow of colors looked awesome but the clear has its own charm
agreed! no wrong answers just endless fun options to explore
Slow mo pops at the end was brilliant x
Kinda looked cooler with the balloons in it
Well made Ryobi commercial
How fun would it be to watch fish 🐠 swim in this.
Oh I thought you were going to turn it into a lamp side table when you went for the seas glass look. Plants are cool too but now I'm kinda obsessed with the ambient light it could have given off
How creative you are!
Really cool project. Sorry to be the parent in the room, but working with epoxy without gloves and sanding epoxy that hasn’t cured for at least a few days is harmful to your health. Since you’re influencing people who might try this themselves - and because I assume you want to be able to work with epoxy for years to come - you should know about and discuss epoxy sensitization. Not pretty.
Beyond cool!!
Great idea.
👏
It looks like cheese. Love it!
Ohhhhhhhh 😮. I thought u were gonna make waterballoons with epoxy to throw at ppl was gonna say that's F'DDDDDDD UP 😂
AMAZING IDEA. Limit tools but not limit ideas and execution Ben m!
Thanks!
Austin Powers loves this.
yeah baby
So many great ideas!!! Thank you!!!
Love this entire concept and finish. Beautiful.
It's amazing how much time and money people spend on totally unnecessary things just to get a "LIKE"
Cool!
Clear balloons would have been nice.
when i did this, i used an icecream carton and only 2 balloons. it worked really well. i used tons of layers of pigmented resin, so it kind of looked like a markus linnenbrink piece.
Can fill the balloons with white sand and leave them in there?
This was simple but very well done. Awesome.
Glad you liked it!
This looks a lot like a voronoi diagram - really nice way to DIY that type of pattern
Thank you! Cheers!
I can see your happy about the project the same as me😍 sooo cool
Can epoxy be colored or dyed in advance?
Yes
I'm having a 90's kid flashback wondering if you did this project well before your mom got home from work 😏
Wow! This came out great!👍🤩
Thank you! Cheers!
Ben! Make tik toks from the slow mo popping of the balloons!
good idea!
That is a great project ! How much epoxy did you have to use for this project ?
Interested in this as well!
Would it be hard to do this project with little experience?
I love, love this piece!
Momma always said you better double bag
lol
I would take that table and fill it with layers of different colored epoxy so youd have colored balls in it
in a year or two it will be yellow, then orange, still nice form
Smart
Bugs and dust are going to love this- t
It’s going to end up in a 2nd hand store in 1 yr for $12.95. It will end up in dump somewhere 2.5 yrs.
your creativity is absurd, one day I hope to become like you
just start experimenting and following your curiosity!
It's reassuring to know that the supply of drugs in the desert is unaffected.
lol
And that, kids, is how you make swiss cheese.
lol
Forever in love with your creativity & end products. You are inspirational!
Forbidden giant cheese.
I want this table with the balloons in tact! Super fun idea!
Great idea!!
Need to be air though otherwise that table would be even heavier
What’s up with the epoxy discoloration ?
one of the orange balloons discolored it a bit
such a cool project ben! really love the final result with the little plants!!
I like how you are experimenting with materials that could work as fillers and heat sinks in epoxy pour… very creative and budget friendly! Great work as usual!
The connecting caverns would make for a cool fountain setup.
A lot of creativity. Good job.
Interesting! Popping the balloons reminds me a lot of my kids playing with water... 😅
You might want to get a backdrop that isn't white when presenting frosted projects. Maybe it's a colourblind thing, but I had a hard time seeing the details...
If you put the balloon knots up against the next balloon, you wouldn't have any knots in the epoxy.
Super cool! I think it would have looked better if it was more transparent; like an alien ice sculpture.
Put a lightbulb in it!
LEDs or EL wire
I was thinking of doing the same thing, but with cement instead of epoxy.
did you just make a giant hunk of cheese out of epoxy?
I haven't run through the comments yet so apologies if this is a repeat...this process could make for magnificent light fixtures. Ceiling mount. Floor. Really cool idea. I do wish epoxy broke down but ultimately looked like a successful stab at your idea. 👏
Great idea!
Even with the plants you could embed a mix of grow lights and RGB LEDs and make an incredible feature piece.
Also, it'd take some clever planning (and flexible tubing with a TON of mold-release) but I'd love to see embedded irrigation and drainage channels so you could just pour water into a top reservoir and have it distributed evenly to each of the plants...
Great project! Love your thinking outside of the box projects!
Thanks so much!
Ok, please tell me I'm not the only one who giggled every time he said "balloon knot"?
Craft unapprouved by the league of trypophobics anonymous
pretty much
Why tf did he pop the balloons that was the cool part
I prefer plants
This might be the coolest project you've done to date... This could be super neat outdoors with lighting in it too.
Cool! The plants are a super cool touch. ♥‿♥
Is this repeatable in any reasonable way to consider actually selling these pieces? Love the way that by their nature they are one-of-a-kind yet dimensional so you could fit them anywhere.
Speaking of, with all those voids, do you feel confident they can support much weight on top if they were, say, sat on?
it could be repeated with silicone molds and balloons where each one would take about 4-6 hours. its quite strong and will strength test on instagram stories
Ben, you already know I'mma say fantastic job & this is another mind blower but, I NEVER EVER in my 46 years on this planet have seen a balloon double bagged!!! Holy smokes mind def. blown, LOL!!! Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
chopstick was key
Great video. Super rad design. Mahalo for sharing! 🙂🐒
SUCCESS! the piece looks great!! so unique! letting all the water cascade on to the studio floor was really satisfying lol.
Thanks so much! 😊
OMG! Love it! Here's a twist....fill holes with translucent colored (bright primary like balloons) epoxy, clear not cloudy with LED lights in there somehow to light from the inside. Would make a great conversation-piece/coffee table with the table-top made of glass so you can enjoy all the prettiness.
Would the results have been much different if the balloons were filled with air, rather than water?
Okay, this one is simultaneously cool and weird.
Great idea and execution. Now excuse me I have to pee, thanks.
lol
Next: fill balloons with colored resin and stack them i a box, let cure, clean and reassemble into a table.
lol that could work if I could get the mold release distributed on the inside of a stretched balloon
The Cheese Stand
yum
You did it!! Such a fun experiment and project! So cool!
Thank you! the thickset fathom is awesome!
Cool idea! I haven't seen this yet. Very unusual!
Interesting science project. Cool side table
Thank you! Cheers!
Hmm, why does this make me think of Swiss cheese?
RIP your carpet.
Great vid man. Really loving the choices you made to get from the remolding to the final product.
This turned out so cool!
…I’m thinking it would be better if you filled the balloons with air and left them in
This came out so sick!! Loving the experimenting Ben!! 🙏🏼
Love this! ❤
I am super excited about this!
me too!
I'm wondering if the water (in the balloons) was necessary. Could you have just used balloons without any water?
possible with small pours over a about 4 weeks but the heat of deep pours would pop them
Looks like emmental cheese
Cool, but cooler with colors inside. What if you used a sold type of color sphere that you could just leave in there
more kitschy for sure
OMG sooooooo cool 👏🏻
mmmmm cheese
Another cool epoxy build.. How mucg epoxy in this one?
Does Ryobi make shopvacs to clean up all that water? 😅 On a mor serious note, how UV-stable is that epoxy, if you wanted to use a similar design for an outdoor waterfeature?
yes they do! you can add a UV stabilizer to the mix
cheese
swiss
looks like swish cheese
The end result looked like something from a Sci-Fi movie set.
yes!
it looks just like Swiss cheese.
not much flavor though
